In this episode, we delve into the fascinating journey of a band that emerged from the fusion of passion and persistence. Our story begins a decade ago with Eric Stenman, who was writing heavier music that he never imagined would reach the public eye. Eric's early musical journey intertwined with Aaron Bruno's in the late '90s through their shared love for hardcore music. Despite their separate creative paths —Eric focusing on music production and Aaron eventually forming Awolnation—they would later find a way to create a band together (although they have been working together for years with Aaron writing for Awolantion and Eric producing all of the records). After years of Eric leaning more towards production and not playing much instrumentals, Aaron, having heard some of Eric's latest work, was impressed and wanted to continue on other songs. This pivotal moment led to the formation of a new band that stands apart from traditional music paths. Unlike many bands that spend years on the road in a van, this group is driven by their love for hardcore music and are doing it because their passions align. With four songs already released, including the recent track "Bazooka" on August 2, listeners can expect some exciting surprises and new directions from this band. The new record will be out on October 4th In our conversation with Eric, we also explored his impressive career as a producer. Since 1997, he's avoided the day job to build a notable resume working with bands like Deftones, Weezer, Thrice, Dashboard Confessional, Senses Fail, and Awolnation. We asked Eric to reflect on his experiences with these iconic groups, providing listeners with insightful anecdotes and behind-the-scenes stories. Tune in to hear about the origins of the band, their unique approach to music, and Eric's reflections on his storied career in the industry.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Can't Swim Zoom video! One of New Jersey's prodigal sons once mused “who says you can't go home?” – but CAN'T SWIM have never really left their Garden State surroundings.Sure, they've certainly logged tens of thousands of miles over the past seven years, bringing their cathartic blend of rock, punk, and emo to audiences around the world on bills with A Day To Remember and Senses Fail and at festivals like 2000trees. But at their core, Can't Swim are innately Jersey through and through: from the ghosts of Tri-State hardcore giants that oscillate through their high-octane sound to the very garages and studios where those songs take shape. Now, the band plant their Garden State flag even deeper on their fourth LP, Thanks But No Thanks, an album that quite literally finds them going back to their roots. After wrapping another slate of hard touring for 2021's Change Of Plans, the group – vocalist Chris LoPorto, bassist Greg McDevitt, guitarist Danny Rico and drummer (and honorary Jersian) Blake Gamel – decamped to the Shore, insulating themselves in the comforts of home while working to hone in on the most elemental components of the Can't Swim sound.Joy has rarely been a word associated with Can't Swim – awash in tempestuous lyricism and muscular energy since breaking into the underground with 2016's Death Deserves A Name EP – but there's a self-referential wryness to LoPorto's lyrics on Thanks But No Thanks that winks its way through the album's 10 songs, along with a finely tuned melodic edge that balances out the band's more brooding nature. With guitarist Rico overseeing production, mixing, and mastering (a position he held on 2017's debut LP Fail You Again and 2018's This Too Won't Pass), first single “me vs. me vs. all y'all” is Can't Swim's most fully realized pop song to date, name-checking The Cure, The Lemonheads and Eddie Vedder, while the album-opening “Nowhere, Ohio” offers a playful tribute to the Alkaline Trio classic “Radio” in between stabs of downtuned guitars. But don't conflate fun with frivolity. The same emotional heft that's made Can't Swim a cult favorite in the scene – and earned them musical co-signs from the likes of Taking Back Sunday's Adam Lazzara and Beartooth's Caleb Shomo – is front and center on Thanks But No Thanks, from the sorrowful summer 2022 single “I heard they found you face down inside your living room,” mourning the death a close friend, to the classic punk rallying cry “ELIMINATE,” which tackles the gun violence epidemic with a strength-in-numbers call to arms.In this way, the evolution of Can't Swim as a band is really evident: What once were presented as insurmountable obstacles on previous albums are now framed as hard-but-necessary lessons that need confronting in to move forward and grow, calling upon new levels of resolve and strength to dull down life's demons. Through it all, the band have been able to truly block out the noise and let their conscience resonate loudest of all.Four records in, it feels like Can't Swim are just now hitting their stride. They've stretched their wings over nearly a decade, dabbling in everything from frantic hardcore (2019's Foreign Language EP) to ethereal indie (2020's Someone Who Isn't Me EP), yet have once again found their way back to their musical home. The next few years will take them far away from their own beds as these songs reach audiences around the world – but that's a sacrifice the band is willing to make because of how much these connections truly mean.We want to hear from you! Rain City Drive has had quite the storied history since they were first formed in conjunction with their former front-man back in 2014. After numerous lineup changes, label changes, and even a name change, the band is back with their self-titled album; which is their fifth overall, but second with this lineup, but first under their new branding – did that make sense?! Nevertheless, after a rather inconsistent release quality, how does this new album stack up overall? Does it provide us with surprisingly great songs? Or does the album's artwork of endless trash let us know ahead of time what to expect?! Find out in our track-by-track review of Rain City Drive's newest album! Also on the episode, we share our thoughts on other albums from bands like Senses Fail, Palisades, Glass Tides, Anthony Green, Coheed and Cambria, and Led Zeppelin. #RainCityDrive #JonnyCraig #SensesFail #Palisades #GlassTides #AnthonyGreen #CoheedAndCambria #LedZeppelin Find us on social media: https://discord.gg/2jv87Wypvw https://www.twitter.com/TheSkinnyPod https://www.instagram.com/mikewearsprada mail to:theskinnywithmikeandadam@gmail.com --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theskinnywithmikeandadam/support

Following up one of our favorite albums from 2019, ‘breathe', TMP are self-releasing their 8th album! Firstly, we try to piece together what's going on with the odd release of this album as well as the lack of communication regarding it from the band, but since it still released for a small number of fans on July 8th, we were able to do a track-by-track review of it for this episode. We hope you enjoy! Also discussed, we share our on other music we've been listening to from bands and artists like Rain City Drive, Senses Fail, Coheed and Cambria, and Led Zeppelin. #TinyMovingParts #RainCityDrive #SensesFail #CoheedAndCambria #LedZeppelin Find us on social media: https://discord.gg/2jv87Wypvw https://www.twitter.com/TheSkinnyPod https://www.instagram.com/mikewearsprada mail to:theskinnywithmikeandadam@gmail.com --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theskinnywithmikeandadam/support

Jesse Rhys Cannon on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 6/22/22 About Jesse Rhys Cannon - I somehow got my first work being paid in the music business when I was 15. Since then I've managed to work in nearly every facet of the music business. If a stranger happens to know who I am, they usually know me from being lucky enough to have worked on records in various capacities with bands like The Cure, Animal Collective, The Misfits, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Brand New, Limp Bizkit, Man Overboard, Somos, Basement, Kevin Devine, Weird Al Yankovic, NOFX and The Menzingers. I'm also known for writing the book Get More Fans: The DIY Guide To The New Music Business, which has gone on to be one of the most popular books on the music business as well as the best selling book on creativity in music Processing Creativity: The Tools, Practices And Habits Used To Make Music You're Happy With. I also host two podcasts, Off The Record and Noise Creators and write articles on the music business for various sites like Alternative Press and Party Smasher Inc. along with a handful of others. But that doesn't explain how I got to do all of that and that's what I'm supposed to explain here. When I was 15 I started to get paid for doing live sound at concerts and spoken word events. Two years later, a hilarious and fun guy by the name of Stork liked my mixes and invited me to engineer live performances at the world-renowned freeform radio station WFMU. There I was lucky enough to work for 9 years recording acts like The Magnetic Fields, Spoon, The Sea and The Cake, Olivia Tremor Control and a couple hundred others. Because of this I started doing live sound at local clubs The Pipeline and Connections. In time, I started booking shows for the company that booked those clubs and the legendary Coney Island High in NYC. Somewhere in this time I got my first credit on a record singing back up vocals on a song with Joey & Dee Dee Ramone, which I still question if I've ever topped. Those jobs gave me enough courage to put on my own concerts, and be crazy enough to think I knew what I was doing enough to start recording local bands. But all of this would happen at night, so I needed a day job. I then started working at my local punk record store (Let It Rock), which then qualified me to work at Soapbox Records on St. Marks Place in NYC. This was great since it also housed esteemed indie label Go-Kart Records where I ran the record store and did publicity. While I love marketing, PR is way too social for me and I preferred talking to creative people instead of cranky zine editors. I was also writing for the esteemed zines of the day like Tape Op, Punk Planet and Maximum RockNRoll. So I decided to stop doing live sound and working at record labels in order to focus on record production. My boss at Go Kart was kind enough to give me a recommendation to Alan Douches at West West Side Music, who happens to be the engineer with the most credits in all of music history. At West West Side I got to learn how to engineer and master from the best in the business. Not only did I get to work under Alan's amazing talent, the best producers in the business were coming by every day (J. Robbins, John Agnello, Brian McTernan) as well as the coolest bands around seemed to walk in the door every day (Fatboy Slim, Fall Out Boy, LCD Soundsystem, Brand New). In that time, I met Steve Evetts (one of my favorite producers growing up) and got to work with him on great records by The Dillinger Escape Plan, Senses Fail, Saves The Day and Say Anything. He then brought me to work with Ross Robinson (my other favorite producer growing up) and I got to work with The Cure & Limp Bizkit among others under him. While all that was happening, two other significant parts of the story happened. I harnessed my own production skills and they became so in demand I started my own studio Cannon Found Soundation, which I still run to this day working with hundreds of bands a year. In that time these two interests collided and I decided to start a blog on the things other blogs weren't writing about in music and wanted to show all the secrets being hidden since that's the most punk thing you can do and punk is the closest thing I have to a religion. This blog became Musformation, a blog I continued through 2015, when I decided to diversify my writing across sites with bigger audiences. The blog's music business articles seemed to be very popular and really resonated, so I decided to go with it. I started helping and then managing the two most promising bands I was producing — Man Overboard and Transit, so I could experiment with the ideas I was writing about. These ideas turned out to be right and both signed with one of the biggest indies in the world (Rise Records) and built massive fan bases under my watch. That was fun and all, but managing and producing records full-time do not mix. So those bands went their way and I kept producing records. A lot of bands asked me to manage them, but I like sleep and hate stress so I decided against that option. I instead put out my book Get More Fans, so every band could learn everything I did working with them and researching the new music business. Because of that book I got a reputation for knowing music tech, which led me to getting approached to do the podcast, Off The Record and form Noise Creators, a service I co-founded that helps connect musicians with the best producers in music today. I now host Atlantic Records Inside The Album where I make audio documentaries on the creative processes of some of the best artists in music like Dashboard Confessional, nothing.nowhere, Jason Mraz and Vance Joy. In 2017 I released Processing Creativity to much praise, I am presently working on a bunch of conversations I want to have on how we change the way people create music to reflect when creative science says enhances creativity. I am trying to change the way records are made and always looking for bands who are interested in doing something new and interesting. I am presently producing, mixing and mastering records 7 days a week and developing a documentary. In 2019 I relaunched Musformation as a YouTube channel to start distributing the knowledge I've acquired to a new audience. As well I relaunched MusforMGMT where I am handling marketing and label services to established artists. In 2020 I took on production duties for the hit podcast The Daily Beast's The New Abnormal as well as their other fantastic podcasts Fever Dreams & The Last Laugh. In 2021 I opened Podstream Studios a live streaming & podcast studio in the heart of Times Square as well as Brooklyn Recording Paradise Brooklyn's most enjoyable recording environment.
