Child-safety advocate Ed Smart recently came out publicly as gay and revealed that he and his wife, Lois, are divorcing. Such announcements from prominent newsmakers make headlines. But what about the straight spouses left behind? Some say they are the forgotten ones — that when their partner comes out of the closet, they go in. Lolly Weed knows about this experience personally and professionally. A marriage and family therapist associate, she and her gay husband, Josh, ended their 15-year marriage last year, something they talked about on a previous “Mormon Land." She returns to this week’s podcast to talk about the challenges these straight spouses face — the heartache, the betrayal, the damage to their self-esteem, the faith trials and, for Latter-day Saints, the reality of a Mormon theology that, in essence, continues to encourage mixed-orientation marriages, no matter how misguided.
In today’s special episode, Josh and Lolly Weed talk about how they entered into a Mixed Orientation Marriage thinking their eyes were wide open, thinking they were living in accordance with their faith. They share what happened when they decided to reveal to their community that Josh is a gay man, how their story went viral and was used by religious communities to shame other lesbian and gay people into straight marriages, how they came to decide they needed to divorce in order to live authentically, and where they are with their faith now. “People in religious communities would use our story as a battering ram against their gay loved ones…like ‘you can do this, see this couple?’” Josh says. “To have a parent with a gay kid [say] ‘Look at this, look at this couple! It seems like they are totally doing this, and you can do it too.’ It was highly pressuring. [Our story] was weaponized. It was devastating.”
Seven years ago (while celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary in Las Vegas), Josh and Lolly Weed made a quiet blog post announcing to their friends and family that Josh was gay, and together they were navigating life in a mixed-orientation Mormon marriage. The Weeds expected to have a candid discussion about their experience, but they weren't prepared to do it on a national and worldwide stage. Their story erupted into virality with millions and millions of people sharing and weighing in on their experience. Josh and Lolly are arguably the most famous example of a mixed-orientation marriage in Mormonism. Their story has been used by LGBT allies and activists as an example of a disingenuous marriage and at the same time, Latter-day Saint leaders hailed the Weeds as an example of endurance and principle–using their story to convince other Latter-day Saints that mixed-orientation marriages were viable and healthy. Five years after their original blog post, the Weed’s announced their divorce. In their first sit-down interview since their announcement of their divorce, Kyle Ashworth sits down with Josh and Lolly to discuss the beginning, middle and future of Josh and Lolly’s experience.
Nicole and Garret discuss Boy Erased, the need for a trigger warning for the very graphic rape scene, Nicole Kidman in one of her best roles, the toll of taking on heavy emotional content, and how we'd rewrite the ending. We tackle how we deal with parents who won't accept us and how damaging it is to be disowned. We also discuss gay conversion therapy and how useless and harmful it is. Read Josh and Lolly Weed's moving post about the dissolution of their marriage as they accepted it was impossible to live life as a gay man in a straight marriage. Garret recommends the book Boy Erased, The Velvet Rage: Overcoming the Pain of Growing Up Gay in a Straight Man's World, and Prayers for Bobby. Nicole recommends But I'm a Cheerleader. We're excited! Shannon Hickman joins Natasha on this episode of Sex in the Mormon News for June 2018. They begin the discussion with comments from an article that recently came out in the "Journal of Sex Research" called, "God, I Can't Stop Thinking About Sex! The Rebound Effect in Unsuccessful Suppression of Sexual Thoughts Among Religious Adolescents" where they discuss the research supporting the view that suppressing sexual thought only causes more damage. Natasha and Shannon then revisit the Josh and Lolly Weed blog post, "Turning a Unicorn into a Bat: The Post in Which we Announce the End of Our Marriage" and how this has affected members as well as the LGBTQIA+ community. If any gay man and a straight woman could make a marriage work, Josh and Lolly Weed could. But after 15 years, the two are divorcing. In this edition of “Mormon Land,” Josh and Lolly Weed discuss their divorce and how it will affect their family dynamics and their relationship with the LDS Church.
Yesterday, Josh and Lolly Weed (a prominent Mormon couple in a mixed-orientation marriage) publicly announced their plan to divorce. Considering the massive impact that this couple’s marriage has had on LGBTQIA Mormons, Cari and Kelsae recorded an impromptu minisode (that isn’t actually mini at all) and process some feelings. In order to make this information more accessible to ex-Mormons and active Mormons alike, Cari and Kelsae depart from NMKMH’s typical tone and format and refrain from swearing entirely. It’s a big dill. Don't fret, they'll be back to their swear-y selves on Sunday. CONTENT WARNING: this episode includes discussion of suicidal ideation and suicide attempt(s) throughout, and we read a quote that contains a gay slur.
