So… yeah. It's Pride Month. And here I am, a straight, white, former church kid debating whether or not to even say anything. Because let's be honest: the internet doesn't need another straight guy weighing in on LGBTQ+ stuff like he's doing anyone a favor. I didn't want this to be some performative, “Look at me, I'm a good ally” thing. That's not what I'm after. That's never been the point of this podcast. But I also don't want to stay quiet. I grew up in a church that had plenty to say about gay people, and none of it kind. I learned to hide. I learned to shrink. I learned to clip my wings and call it obedience. And I've seen what that kind of faith does to people who are just trying to be themselves. Especially kids. So no, I'm not trying to center myself. I'm not part of the LGBTQ+ community. But I have been part of the silence. And honestly? I'm tired of pretending that's somehow more respectful. This episode isn't polished. It's not perfect. It's not a mic drop or a manifesto. It's just me sitting in the tension, saying something I probably should've said a long time ago. Because out of all the hills I could die on… this isn't one of them. In 2002 he received the Pulitzer Prize for Empire Falls, which, like Nobody's Fool, won multiple awards for its screen adaptation, and in 2023 his novel Straight Man was adapted into the television series Lucky Hank. Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to Dick Smothers Jr, son of, yes, you guessed it, Dick Smothers of the famed Smothers Brothers comedy team. We spoke to Dick Jr. about growing up with one of the best straight men in the business – his father, how his father and uncle Tom Smothers founded their musical comedy act, how they launched their massive CBS show of the 1960s The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour and much more. We talked about the dichotomy between the real life personality traits of both brothers offstage and what it was like growing up in Beverly Hills, Woodland Hills and Santa Cruz, California as a young adult with a dad who clearly loved attention. We also talk about Dick's heavy metal band, Kamikaze of the 1980s who were part of the Northern California metal scene, how the band made their television debut on a Smothers Brothers special covering a track from the Great American Songbook and more. It was at about this point when our interview got very honest and while we don't want to give anything away, let's just say, if you know the names Ona Zee or Alister Crowley, you might have an idea where our interview headed. If not, well, all we can tell you is we've never broached either of these two topics on this podcast before. “Not that there's anything wrong with that” to quote Seinfeld, but, it does make for some very enlightening and honest conversation from Dick Jr. about his life and his beliefs and we certainly appreciate that. “I was particularly interested in writing comedy,” says Paul Lieberstein, who is best known for playing Toby on The Office, but has writing credits for King of the Hill, The Drew Carey Show, Ghosted, Space Force, and now, Lucky Hank. “Some Woody Allen short stories and Steve Martin albums. In my twenties, I learned there was a whole industry there, and you can do that, because I had never met anyone who had done that.” Aaron Zelman, the co-creator of Lucky Hank, also realized he enjoyed writing at an early age, even though he didn't feel he was particularly good at it back then. “It dovetailed with my interest in theater, acting, and improv. The more I did it, the more I wanted to be the one creating what I was doing.” Zelman's additional writing credits include Law & Order, Criminal Minds, Damages, and The Killing.  Together, they have adapted Richard Russo's 1997 novel, Straight Man. The novel can be described as follows: “William Henry Devereaux, Jr., is the reluctant chairman of the English department of a badly underfunded college in the Pennsylvania rust belt. Devereaux's reluctance is partly rooted in his character—he is a born anarchist—and partly in the fact that his department is more savagely divided than the Balkans.” The writers say the book is hilarious, but also very serious. “There are some darker, underlying currents of what defines the character of Hank and we didn't want to shy away from that.” Lieberstein says, “Something we had to talk about a lot was the storytelling demands of the hour, like how little could we do. We just wanted to do people that are living, without soap stuff, or overarching concepts. We were stretching the boundaries of how little we could do, knowing we had an obligation to keep people interested.”  To find this balance, the writers say they rewrote every single episode about four times. “The thing that we kept coming back to, doing as little as possible, we didn't want to implode bigger concepts. We didn't want to throw in a murder. It was a challenge to keep the audience entertained without doing that stuff, but in my life, things feel pretty damn dramatic without a murder to solve. We wanted to have an audience go on that ride too.” To encompass all of this in one idea, the writers came up with the story driver: “The high drama of everyday life.” Want more?
