Bret and Mike take some deeper dives into important fantasy topics of the week.
In this edition of "Without a Curse," Alex analyzes the past three games against Red Sox' "natural interleague rival," the Phillies, and looks ahead to a meaningful weekend series against the Yankees. The Phillies are teetering on the edge of falling out of playoff contention, and because of that, there is ample speculation that both of Cliff Lee and Jonathan Papelbon may be available at the trade deadline. Alex says it would be beyond ridiculous for the Red Sox to pursue Papelbon, and it would be a mistake for them to pursue Lee as well. As the Red Sox have learned, there are no shortcuts to building a World Series contender. Trading significant prospects for Lee would show that the Red Sox haven't learned their lessons from the past three years. One of novelties with Lee is that he works fast, as his average length of game is well below three hours. For comparison sake, the average Red Sox game is well above three hours in length. Alex talks about how much of a factor the increasing length of baseball games is having on the sport's popularity, and why MLB has not been proactive about this issue. It was reported yesterday that Dustin Pedroia has been playing the entire season with a torn UCL in his thumb, which he suffered sliding headfirst into 1st base on opening day. Should we admire Pedroia for playing as well as he has through this injury, or criticize him for playing carelessly and sliding headfirst into 1st base? The Red Sox and Yankees will match-up at Yankee Stadium this weekend in a battle for 1st place, and the Red Sox may have to do it without Clay Buchholz. With this medical staff's recent history, there is the unfortunate probability that there could be more to the Buchholz collarbone injury than what the team originally said. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex recaps the AL East standings as the calendar turns to June, and rails against those who think the Yankees will be worse when their good players return from injury. Yes, some feel they're better with Lyle Overbay at 1st base instead of Mark Teixeira. Alex also talks about how the Cardinals continue to do everything, how the Pirates have done everything right thus far this season and how you're not doing it right if you're not appreciating seasons Miguel Cabrera and Mike Trout are putting up as an encore to their MVP battle last year. On this week’s Daily News Fifth Yankees Podcast, Mark Feinsand sits down with Vernon Wells to discuss his impressive start, his reunion this season with Lyle Overbay and what it was like to play third base for the first time in his career. Mark also chats with Sweeny Murti of WFAN as the two break down Phil Hughes’ disastrous start against the Mariners and discuss whether Mariano Rivera is actually being overlooked this season.
On this week's Daily News Fifth Yankees Podcast, Mark Feinsand sits down with Yankees first baseman Lyle Overbay to discuss the team's improbable start to the season, Overbay's bizarre move to the Yankees at the end of spring training and what he's seen from his long-time teammate Vernon Wells so far this year. Mark also chats with former Yankees catcher and current YES Network analyst John Flaherty about Andy Pettitte's recent struggles, Phil Hughes' recent success and the Yankees' catching situation.
Alex speaks with Alex Speier of WEEI.com. They discuss the ramifications of the latest PED story around baseball, as several prominent players have been tied to a biogenesis clinic in South Florida. Are we forever in the "steroid era?" Also, do the Yankees have any chance at voiding the remainder of Alex Rodriguez' contract? Alex talks about some early Spring Training storylines, including the extent of John Farrell's impact on the pitching staff and the expectations for the team's top prospects this spring. After the interview, Alex gives his take on the meaning of the Lyle Overbay signing, and if a drop in season ticket renewals means the Red Sox will FINALLY end the sellout streak this season before they surpass the Trail Blazers' record of 814 consecutive sellouts. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex shares his disbelief that some were surprised at the A-Rod revelations this week. Plus, Alex tells you the biggest difference between A-Rod and Derek Jeter. Email Alex at areimer@bu.edu, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1. Hopefully you enjoyed the Super Bowl. Spring Training is now right around the corner!
