Guests: Blue Jays icons Pat Hentgen and Vernon Wells With Vladimir Guerrero Jr. putting pen to paper on the second-largest contract in baseball history, one that will keep him with the team until 2039, when he's forty years old, and could very well make him the first “Forever Blue Jay,” we are joined by two of the greatest players in club history. Pat Hentgen, who won 19 games for the 1993 World Series champs and picked up the team's first Cy Young award in 1996, was a Blue Jay for 10 years and in the organization for 15. Vernon Wells, who is in the top five of almost every offensive category in the Jays' all-time record book and still holds the team's single-season record with 215 hits (2003), spent 12 years with the Jays and was in the organization for 14. They'll talk about what it means to play in Toronto for a long time, to be stars here, and what the future could hold for Vladdy as a fellow iconic Blue Jay who will rewrite the team's record book and may well be headed for Cooperstown by the time he's done.

In this episode of Born to Watch, we take a wild ride back to 1985 for a Weird Science (1985) Review, where two geeky teens somehow manage to create the perfect woman with a little help from a computer, some questionable science, and a whole lot of 80s magic. But does this John Hughes cult classic still hold up today, or is it a relic best left in the past? Whitey, G Man, and Damo break it all down—the absurd plot, the unforgettable performances, and the film's impact on pop culture. From Oingo Boingo's legendary theme song to the iconic Kelly LeBrock taking nerd wish-fulfillment to a whole new level, Weird Science is packed with classic 80s energy. But how does it fare when viewed through a modern lens? We debate the film's over-the-top humor, its place in the John Hughes cinematic universe, and whether it's truly a teenage fantasy or just plain ridiculous. And speaking of ridiculous—how about that scene-stealing performance from Bill Paxton as Chet? He might just be one of cinema's most unforgettable older brothers. And here's a question for the real movie buffs: Did Mad Max 2 inspire Weird Science? With Vernon Wells reprising a very familiar role, it's hard to ignore the similarities. We dig into the connections between the two films and how a Mad Max villain somehow ended up in this teenage comedy.Of course, it wouldn't be Born to Watch without some heated debates. Are Ian and Max the worst dweeb bullies in movie history? Did this film get overlooked in a stacked year of 80s cinema? And what was up with Gary's infamous bar scene—comedic genius or a joke that went on way too long?We also bring back the fan-favorite Hit Sleeper Dud segment, uncovering forgotten 1985 gems and taking a closer look at No Retreat, No Surrender, Fortress, and the bizarre misfire that was Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. Plus, we read some hilarious listener comments and break down why one fan thinks our Fight Club episode might just be the Dune: Part Two of our podcast. And don't miss the return of Whitey's Kick Arse Credit Theme Song, only a quality jingle could make Gow's song this week better.

Write us we would like to hear from you Prepare to plunge into a reimagined, atmospheric adaptation of Jules Verne's classic 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, crafted in the brooding style with cinematic flair. This is not just a journey beneath the waves—it's a descent into the human soul. Join Professor Aronnax, his loyal servant Conseil, and the brash harpooner Ned Land as they are swept aboard the enigmatic Nautilus, a submarine unlike any other, captained by the brilliant yet tormented Captain Nemo. Trapped within its iron confines, they are drawn into Nemo's obsessive quest for freedom from a corrupt world above—a quest that spirals into vengeance, tragedy, and a confrontation with the unfathomable power of the sea. From breathtaking wonders of the deep to the haunting isolation of the abyss, this adaptation explores themes of freedom, captivity, and the price of defiance. With relentless action, vivid characters, and a chilling climax in the heart of a raging maelstrom, this is a journey that will leave you questioning: can we ever escape the weight of our own choices?"Ladies and gentlemen, this is Tom Konkle, bidding you goodnight from the shadowy corridors of the mind, where stories are told and dreams are shaped into the sounds you've just heard. Tonight's production has been a humble offering from the Mindstream Players Radio Reborn Podcast—our attempt to bring you the extraordinary, the macabre, the moving, and the marvelous.I wanted to do an adaption of this Jules Verne classic but honor it by having a new take on it as a moody, introspective fever dream. Audio fiction leads itself to such things and so I began this tale. But of course, no such endeavor is truly the work of one man. For tonight's voyage into the theater of the mind, I owe my deepest thanks to my dear and talented friends: Vernon Wells as Nemo, Tom Konkle as Professor Aronnax, David Beeler as Ned, Paul Eiding as Conseil, with Pete Lutz, Larry Groebe, Kurtis Bedford Jack Ward, and my own son, Sean Konkle. Their voices have lent life to the characters that moved and breathed within this little world we built together. As always, the writing adaption, the music, the editing, and the direction—such as it is—are mine. A pleasure, as ever, to weave the tale. But the magic is yours, dear listeners. You make these stories live, simply by hearing them. And so, until next time, we leave you here—between the ticking seconds, the fading echoes, and the whisper of dreams yet untold. I remain, as always, your obedient servant, Tom Konkle. GoodnightSupport the show Lumen Actus Productions, Inc.

In the pantheon of post-apocalyptic cinema, few films have achieved the iconic status of George Miller's Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior. Released in 1981, this Australian action masterpiece solidified Mel Gibson's status as a global star and redefined the genre with its raw, kinetic energy and visionary storytelling. For this week's episode of Born to Watch, we delve deep into why The Road Warrior remains a timeless classic, resonating with audiences over four decades later.Cinematic Brilliance and World-BuildingFrom the opening frames, The Road Warrior immerses viewers in a desolate, dystopian future where civilisation has collapsed and survival is a brutal battle. The film's cinematography, spearheaded by Dean Semler, captures the stark beauty and harshness of the Australian outback, transforming it into a hauntingly plausible post-apocalyptic wasteland. The wide, sweeping shots of barren landscapes contrast with the intense, close-up action sequences, creating a visually compelling narrative that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats.George Miller's direction is nothing short of visionary. He crafts a world that is both alien and eerily familiar, where the collapse of society has led to a regression into primitive tribalism. The attention to detail in the set design, costumes, and vehicles helps build a universe that feels lived-in and believable. The modified cars and motorbikes, adorned with spikes and armour, have become iconic symbols of the film, representing the resourcefulness and desperation of the world's inhabitants.Storytelling and ThemesAt its core, The Road Warrior is a story about survival and redemption. Max Rockatansky, portrayed with stoic intensity by Mel Gibson, is a lone wanderer haunted by the loss of his family and former life. Max's journey is one of reluctant heroism; he is initially driven solely by self-preservation but gradually finds a purpose in helping a group of settlers defend their precious fuel supply from a marauding band of savages. The narrative is straightforward yet profound, exploring isolation, community, and the enduring human spirit. The settlers, led by the charismatic Pappagallo (Michael Preston), represent a glimmer of hope and civilisation amidst the chaos. Their struggle to protect their oil refinery from the barbaric Humungus (Kjell Nilsson) and his gang is a microcosm of the fight to preserve humanity's better nature in the face of annihilation.Character Development and PerformancesMel Gibson's portrayal of Max is a masterclass in understated performance. With minimal dialogue, Gibson conveys a depth of emotion through his physicality and expressions. Max is a man of few words, but his actions speak volumes, making him an enigmatic and compelling protagonist. His evolution from a hardened survivor to a reluctant saviour is subtly yet powerfully executed. The film's antagonists are equally memorable. The Humungus, with his menacing presence and grotesque mask, is a formidable villain whose very appearance strikes fear. Vernon Wells, as Wez, the psychotic henchman, delivers a terrifying and mesmerising performance. His raw, unhinged energy epitomises the savage brutality of the film's antagonistic forces. The supporting cast adds depth and variety to the narrative, including the feisty and resourceful Feral Kid (Emil Minty) and the determined Warrior Woman (Virginia Hey). No matter how minor, each character contributes to the film's rich tapestry, making the world feel populated and real.Action and ChoreographyOne of the most celebrated aspects of The Road Warrior is its groundbreaking action sequences. The film is renowned for its spectacular car chases and stunts, which remain some of the most thrilling ever captured on film. The climactic chase scene, in which Max drives a heavily armoured tanker while pursued by Humungus's gang, is a masterclass in action filmmaking. The sequence is meticulously choreographed, combining practical effects, real stunts, and dynamic camera work to create a visceral and exhilarating experience.Miller's decision to use practical effects and real vehicles lends authenticity to the action that CGI-heavy modern films often lack. The stunts are dangerous and daring, performed by skilled stuntmen who risked life and limb to achieve the film's breathtaking sequences. This commitment to practical effects enhances the film's gritty realism and keeps viewers engaged in the high-stakes drama.Cultural Impact and LegacyThe Road Warrior has left an indelible mark on popular culture. Its influence can be seen in countless films, TV shows, and video games that draw inspiration from its post-apocalyptic aesthetic and action-packed narrative. The film's success helped to popularise the genre, paving the way for future dystopian classics. Moreover, The Road Warrior established many tropes synonymous with post-apocalyptic storytelling. The lone antihero, the savage wasteland, the resource wars—these elements have been echoed and reinterpreted in various media, a testament to the film's enduring legacy. The character of Max Rockatansky himself has become a cultural icon, embodying the archetype of the reluctant hero who rises to the occasion. Mel Gibson's portrayal has left a lasting impression, making Max one of cinema's most memorable characters.Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior is a towering achievement in action cinema. Its blend of stunning visuals, relentless action, and poignant storytelling creates a film that is as emotionally resonant as it is thrilling. George Miller's visionary direction, outstanding performances, and groundbreaking stunts have cemented the film's place in cinematic history. For the Born to Watch podcast team, The Road Warrior is not just a movie but a benchmark of filmmaking excellence. Its impact on the genre and popular culture is undeniable, and its themes of survival, community, and redemption continue to resonate with audiences today. As we revisit this classic, we're reminded of the power of cinema to transport, inspire, and entertain. So, buckle up and join us on this high-octane journey through the wastelands – because in the world of Mad Max, the road is as unforgiving as it is exhilarating.

Over the past 45 years, there has been no other film franchise QUITE as inventive nor as consistently exciting as The Mad Max Saga….four films mostly chronicling the post-apocalyptic adventures of lone wolf Max Roxatansky played three times by Mel Gibson and most recently by Tom Hardy. As everyone has been directed by Australian cinematic genius George Miller, they have each reflected his unique vision while also being HUGELY influential on pop culture, more specifically the action genre. So needless to say, new ones don't come around very often and when they do….it MORE than qualifies as a cinematic EVENT. Therefore over the next several months, I will be revisiting EACH entry of this beloved franchise every month leading up to the U.S. release of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga on May 24! And now the SECOND film in this franchise which is considered by many to be the best overall.....well at least was considered to be the best until Mad Max Fury Road came out in 2015. But it's still damn impressive bringing us back to Max who is now a drifter with his own heavily souped up Interceptor wandering around the post-apocalyptic Australian Outback. His character is always on the search for gasoline....as are most others at this point in time which leads to some potential trouble. He finds a massive oil refinery occupied by well-meaning survivors who just want to live in peace. Of course there are more dangerous elements out there who want to take over this oil refinery and they are lead by the evil Lord Humungus played by Kjell Nilsson...and they're not taking any prisoners. :o So here comes Max to try to help them transport their oil to a safer place while avoiding this violent gang which means to overtake them....and what results is a rip-roaring series of action sequences mostly taking place on the open road! Also co-starring are Bruce Spence, Michael Preston, Emil Minty, and Vernon Wells.Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
In this episode of Sports the NEMO Way we bring the Mount Rushmore of the Toronto Blue Jays to the table for discussion.
This week on Fabulous Film and Friends we are pointing our compasses southward to the land of doom and gloom:Australia! Don't be fooled by the likes of Paul Hogan, Yahoo Serious and Thor, underneath that loopy, whimsical Australian charm, lies an unparalleled grim and sober yet prophetic outlook about life on Earth as evidenced by 1971's Walkabout directed by Nicholas Roeg, though full disclosure: he's an Englishman who shepherded Jenny Agutter, Luc Roeg, David Gulpilil and John Meillion to cinematic prominence, then 1982's The Road Warrior aka Mad Max 2 directed by George Miller and starring Mel Gibson, Bruce Spence, Kjell Nillson, Max Phipps, Vernon Wells, Mike Preston, Arkie Whitely, Viginia Hey and Emil Minty then topped off with The Road directed by Australian native John Hillcoat and starring Viggo Mortenson, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Charlize Theron, Garrett Dillahunt, the late Michael Kenneth Williams, Guy Pearce and Robert Duvall. My guests today are once again the series regulars who have both the stomach and gloomy disposition to take solace in rewatching these films back-to-back-to-back, Roseanne Caputi and Alex Robertson.Okay before we go on a walkabout of our own, the synopses: In Walkabout, a perfectly ordinary pair of upper-class English siblings get lost in the Australian outback after their father takes them for a picnic then tries to murder them. They look to be perfect candidates for either heat stroke and/or vulture food until they are rescued by a young Aboriginal teen out on his Walkabout. The Road Warrior/Mad Max 2 raises the stakes of the original Mad Max and picks up the story with ex cop Max Rockatansky travelling the barren, hellish, post-apocalyptic highways and stumbling upon an evil road gang led by a brute named Lord Humungus. Humungus is hellbent on invading a compound belonging to a group of civilized and intelligent settlers who have built an oasis around the last of the oil wells and have running lights and supplies. Losing numbers and their morale under the constant attacks of Humungus, the settlers hatch a plan to escape the vermin on wheels and flee to the coast with their oil in tow. With the help of Max and a pilot called the Gyro Captain, the settlers are given a slim chance to survive. In The Road a Man risks all to protect his Boy and teach him survival skills in another bleak and nightmarish future where all plant and animal life is gone and the dominant humans subsist through murder and cannibalism. Which film is king of the outback/queen of the end times?Find out!

Guests: Blue Jays past and present all-stars Ricky Romero, Jordan Romano and Vernon Wells. This week in "Deep Left Field," we convene an all-star roundtable with Vernon Wells, Jordan Romano and Ricky Romero, who combined to make six all-star teams as Blue Jays, to discuss what it's like to play in Toronto and how much opposing players enjoy coming here. The table also pushes back against some recent opinion columns from south of the border that suggested having Shohei Ohtani sign with the Jays would have been bad for baseball. Part Three of my Christmas Special! Dennice Cisneros who you all know plays ‘Olivia Romo' in the comedy horror, “Red Snow” alongside the legendary Vernon Wells and other great actors such as Nico Bellamy (Luke), Laura Kennon (Jackie), and Alan Silva (Brock). At first, I was reluctant to watch this movie, but I am certainly glad that I did. It's not your typical comedy horror with just vampires, the storyline is quite ‘cheeky' and very entertaining. Dennice Cisneros, an award-winning actress who is the first a first generation Mexican American and quite talented. She pinned the role of Olivia very well and I am delighted to say that no one else could have acted as Olivia better. For those that love cheeky, romance, vampires, and comedy all wrapped in a horror movie, this film is definitely for you to watch… And to put on your list as Horror Christmas movies to check out, I guarantee that you will not regret it. Overall, great flick… The cheesy and cheeky comedy makes up the entire 80 minutes with a plot twist at the end. If I were to rate this movie with ‘fangs' – I would give it a 4.5 out of 5. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/southjerseyhorror/message
In this episode, I'm going Commando. The 1985 Arnold Schwarzenegger classic bullets and bodies action extravaganza, that is! I'm going retro this week since there's nothing good enough at the theaters to review for my beloved movie maniacs and fellow freedom-fueled film fanatics. Commando is about ex-Special Forces soldier John Matrix trying to save his daughter after she's kidnapped to force him to assassinate a president. Matrix escapes the baddies tasked with escorting him to the country to kill the president, and the action blows up from there. He's joined by Rae Dawn Chong, as Cindy, who involuntarily at first, becomes his valuable ally. Will he get his daughter, played by Alyssa Milano, back in time? Of course he will! Commando also stars the late great Bill Paxton in a small role, Dan Hedaya, Vernon Wells, David Patrick Kelly, James Olson, Bill Duke, Drew Snyder, Sharon Wyatt, Michael DeLano and Bob Minor. STEWART WADE From a young age, Stewart Wade knew he wanted to tell stories. He performed skits in the backyard for his captive parents and friends, and attempted his first novel at age ten. A bit later, Stewart tried his hand at poetry, short stories, and playwriting, ultimately getting a Master's degree in Theater, Film and Television from UCLA. After a few years in the Hollywood trenches, Stewart wrote and directed his first feature film, Coffee Date, starring Wilson Cruz, Jonathan Silverman, Sally Kirkland, Elaine Hendrix, Jason Stuart, and Debbie Gibson. The movie garnered numerous awards and received a limited theatrical release, ultimately playing in rotation for a year on MTV's LOGO channel. His next movie, Tru Loved, starred Najarra Townsend and Jake Abel, and featured Jasmine Guy, Alexandra Paul, Alec Mapa, Cynda Williams, Bruce Vilanch, Nichelle Nichols, Vernon Wells -- and Jane Lynch. It also won several awards before playing in rotation on Here!TV for many years. Next up, Stewart directed and co-produced Such Good People, a screwball comedy written by David Michael Barrett and starring Michael Urie, Randy Harrison, and James Urbaniak, with supporting roles by Scott Wolf, Ana Ortiz, Lance Bass, Alec Mapa, Tom Lenk, Drew Droege, and Rick Overton. At about this same time, Stewart created Coffee House Chronicles. This web series is an ongoing passion, as each episode is self-contained and can be produced when time and money allow. Most recently, Stewart has written and directed his first drama, Say Yes, and now the sequel, Baby Steps. Both star Patrick Zeller and Matt Pascua, and are available on Amazon Prime.Contact: Stewartnla@aol.comWeb: http://www.stewartwadefilms.wordpress.comPhoto: Copyright Wilkinson/2023Opening and closing music courtesy the very talented Zakhar Valaha via Pixabay. To contact Wilkinson- email him at BecomingWilkinson@gmail.com

On this week's show, we watched 1985's Commando starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Rae Dawn Chong, and Vernon Wells. Arguably, it's one of Arnold's best movies, and for good reason. While the plot of the movie is thin, it's heavy on explosions, big guns, bigger muscles, a comic book-level villain, giant dudes beating the hell out of each other, and some of Schwarzenegger's greatest one-liners. In short, it's a wildly fun movie. If you like what you hear, be sure to subscribe. Enjoy!
After three years of a starting pitcher bromance in bloom, AJ Burnett left our beloved Toronto Blue Jays to sign with the Yankees. In 2009, he returned to Skydome in a head to head matchup against who else? Roy Halladay. This month on Sportsfeld Storytime we look back at the "Playoff Atmosphere" in the dome several years before the actual playoffs would return to Toronto. In episode one, we remember the AJ Burnett era, three years where the Jays were quietly pretty good, and try our best to put some respect on the name of Vernon Wells.Sick of hearing all the ads?
