The Phillies opened the second half of their season with a 2-4 road trip through Pittsburgh and Minnesota. It should have been 4-2, but the bullpen blew a couple late-inning leads. The Phillies already had been looking for a late-inning reliever before the July 30 trade deadline, but the pen's recent struggles only reinforced the idea that they must find somebody, not only to help them in the regular season, but in the postseason, too.How far do the Phillies go? A half-season rental, which will be more affordable? Or a big fish who will carry a steep price?Ruben shares his experiences acquiring Cliff Lee, Roy Oswalt and Hunter Pence in consecutive trade deadlines from 2009-11.You can watch the show on our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@ThePhilliesShowKeep up with the show here:- Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thephilliesshow/- TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thephilliesshow- X: https://twitter.com/thephilliesshow- Threads: https://www.threads.net/@thephilliesshow- Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61559185425483

This year there were a slew of big deals for excellent players at the July 30 trading deadline. it may have even been the most good players traded ever at the deadline. We talk about the most significant trading deadline deals over the past 60 years since there were not that many before 1969 when divisional play began and there were more than two league champions. A couple of corrections. Cliff Lee went to the Phillies at the deadline and they did make the WS again in 2009 but the Yankees won that one. Kevin Brown as Gordon said did pitch a while for the Dodgers and only pitched one year for the Padres but it was a before season move though the Padres did reach the WS. The Dusty era had ended, Sam Zell was in town screwing up the Tribune and trying to pump up the value of the Cubs so he could sell them to some unsuspecting dopes in Omaha, Alfonso Soriano, Theodore Roosevelt Lilly, Jason Marquis, Mark DeRosa and Cliff Lee were new to town and the Cubs struggled to start the season. Then Carlos Zambrano punched Michael Barrett, Lou Piniella kicked his hat and some dirt and the Cubs took off. Soriano spent September starting every game with a homer and the Cubs held off the Brewers to win the division. The playoffs? Well, how can you stop Augie Ojeda?
