#989: Can the Phillies Fix Jesus Luzardo & Trade Deadline Rumors

The Good Phight: for Philadelphia Phillies fans

On Episode 989 of Hittin' Season, powered by WHYY, John Stolnis of The Good Phight recaps Wednesday night's awful loss to the Red Sox and tries to get to the bottom of Jesus Luzardo's struggles. Also, Cristopher Sanchez is now a bona fide ace, John goes inside the numbers on what makes him so special. And what are the latest Trade Rumors surrounding the Phils? John breaks down all the latest. Could the Phils move Ranger Suarez or Luzardo this summer? Show Notes: Disastrous loss in the finale Phillies blow a 5-0 lead, HRs from Schwarber, Harper, Castellanos & Stott, Realmuto It's the Phils' first loss in a game they homered five or more times since June 10, 2019. They haven't won three in a row since June 18-20. Blame Realmuto & Luzardo, who had a no-hitter going into the 5th, gives us 6 in the 5th after walking in two runs then serving up a grand slam FELL APART WHILE PITCHING FROM THE STRETCH AGAIN Thomson said they have to keep digging and working on what's wrong with Luzardo, specifically in the stretch Since June 11, opponents have hit .192/.252/.253 with 37 strikeouts and eight walks when there is no one on base against Luzardo. With runners on base, those numbers jump to .339/.443/.576, 16 strikeouts and 11 walks. (Gelb) Gelb says he went back to his old mechanics last night, but it still didn't work Jesus Luzardo says he is working day and night to fix his issues and he says they need to be fixed. He says teams are hitting him hard when he is pitching out of the stretch. He says it is not on JT Realmuto losing that foul ball pop-up. He says he and other Phillies lost it as well. Manager Rob Thomson says Jesus Luzardo lost his concentration. Phillies now 3-8 in Luzardo's last 11 starts They've now given Luzardo 3-0, 4-1 and 5-0 leads in July only to have him lose all 3 of them. He posted a 2.15 ERA in his first 11 starts. He allowed 20 runs in his next two. He made significant mechanical changes when pitching from the stretch, and it's resulted in only a 4.79 ERA over his last nine starts. UNLESS LUZARDO FIGURES THIS OUT, THEIR ENTIRE OFF-SEASON WILL HAVE BEEN A COMPLETE AND UTTER FAILURE The good news is this is a mechanical issue… which would indicate to me it CAN be fixed… but can they fix it in time? PITCH TIPPING: The Red Sox are renowned for doing this. Two pitches later, Story doubled home a run. THIS WAS NOT A STRONG ROB THOMSON GAME Luzardo should have been pulled after the second straight bases loaded walk, but got Jordan Romano up too late… after the game, Thomson admitted that was a mistake Pinch-ran Weston Wilson for Kyle Schwarber in the 10th after Schwarber's RBI single… Wilson, who is not fast… thrown out trying to steal 2nd to end the 10th With Wilson already used, Max Kepler had to face a lefty reliever and watched a called strike three to end the game in the 11th, instead of having Wilson available to pinch hit Rob Thomson on the 5th inning tonight: Said they have to keep digging and working on what's wrong with Luzardo, specifically in the stretch Harper's home run was the 350th of his career Bryce Harper tonight became the youngest of the 8 active players to reach 350 career home runs joining Giancarlo Stanton, Mike Trout, Paul Goldschmidt, Manny Machado, Freddie Freeman, Nolan Arenado, Aaron Judge. Kyle Schwarber's 34 HR are the 3rd-most through 102 games in Phillies franchise history, behind only Ryan Howard in 2006 and Mike Schmidt in 1979 -- both had 36. Cristopher Sanchez is a TRUE ACE: https://www.thegoodphight.com/2025/7/23/24472912/cristopher-sanchez-is-a-real-bona-fide-cy-young-contender WHEELER & SANCHEZ This gives the Phillies a leg-up in the postseason No one can match what the Phillies can do in the playoffs STARK ON SCHWARBER Says he believes Schwarber will be back here 4 years, $100 million is the number… how is he going to have a better deal four years AFTER the first free agent contract??? TRADE DEADLINE LATEST: Jayson Stark on 975 the Fanatic w/ Mikey Miss: Dombrowski wants to use his biggest chips to trade for a big time power bullpen arm controllable beyond this year, Duran, Bautista, no on Miller or Clase If he gets one, it's a right-handed platoon bat that falls into his lap Bullpen arm is more important than a bat Jeff Passan: The Phillies have quietly built up one of the best farm systems in baseball, and president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski's history of trading prospects for impact talent is unmatched. Still, with the Phillies entering a transition phase over the next few years, they aren't likely to sacrifice all of their depth. That complicates their tack at this deadline, because they are among the few teams with the need and capacity to acquire a pitcher of Clase's talent. Same goes for Cade Smith, another Guardian, and the Twins' two frontline relievers, Jhoan Duran and Griffin Jax. Getting David Robertson for $6 million certainly helps matters and serves as insurance against objectionable demands on high-end relief pitchers. And yet adding Robertson plus a high-octane relief arm alongside Orion Kerkering and Matt Strahm gives the Phillies a representative back end. If they can also add a right-handed-hitting outfielder with power -- Adolis Garcia is in the mix, and Luis Robert Jr. would play, too -- it will be a successful deadline for a team whose starting pitching is good enough to carry it deep into October. Ruben Amaro & Jim Salisbury on Phillies Show Very interesting stuff on the show from Amaro (doesn't think they'll be able to get a lock down closer), Aiden Miller might be more untouchable than Painter, and the clubhouse talking about Eugenio Suarez (Salisbury). @JohnnyPhisher: Phillies need a RHH OF @Buster_ESPN: A surprise name has emerged in the starting pitcher market: Dylan Cease, who will be eligible for free agency at year's end. Perception of other teams is that the Padres are intent on making a push for the playoffs, and would use Cease to help fill other roster needs. Mets, AL East teams, Cubs among teams that have talked about him. COULD THE PHILLIES DO SOMETHING SIMILAR WITH RANGER SUAREZ OR JESUS LUZARDO? Jo Adell started slow, but on May 6 he hit a 9th inning HR in a blowout that got things going for him. Since then (67 gms) he has a .907 OPS (top 20 in MLB) with 19 HR (T-6th), and his .563 SLG is higher than any Phillies player. An interesting name: Dane Myers. Plays center field for the Marlins. The right-handed 29 year is wailing on lefties: .324/.385/.493, .878 OPS, 2 HRs, 13 RBIs in 78 PAs, 6 doubles. Would be a platoon guy. The Phillies and Padres are two of the many teams that have expressed interest in Steven Kwan, reports Jon Heyman of The New York Post. Both National League contenders are known to be looking for a left field upgrade.

Ryan fans 17 batters, the most ever in a 9-inning no-hitter, including eight straight, but only one over the last two innings. Nolan's arm stiffens while watching his team rally for five runs in the top of the 8th. With two outs in the 9th, Norm Cash, who had struck out his three other times at bat, comes to bat wielding a piano leg. Umpire Ron Luciano points out the illegality and Cash then pops out using a regulation bat. Ryan's eight strikeouts in a row ties the American League record he set last year. On July 15, 1990, Bo Jackson of the Kansas City Royals hits home runs in three consecutive at-bats before separating his shoulder trying to make a diving catch against Deion Sanders of the New York Yankees. Jackson's power surge helps the Royals to a 10-7 victory, but the two-sport star will miss the next six weeks. On July 15, 1994 - In the first inning at Comiskey Park, Chicago White Sox manager Gene Lamont accuses Cleveland Indians slugger Albert Belle of using a corked bat, and umpire Dave Phillips confiscates the bat and stores it in the umps' dressing room. After the 3 - 2 Indians win, the switch is discovered to the consternation of the umps and the White Sox. Cubs Celebrate Tiki Night with 4–2 Win Over Captains The South Bend Cubs brought the island vibes to Four Winds Field on Tiki Night and delivered a 4–2 victory over the Lake County Captains. First pitch was delayed slightly due to a brief rain shower, with the game getting underway around 7:30 p.m. Lake County struck first with two runs in the top of the third inning off Cubs starter Tyler Schlaffer, but South Bend quickly answered in the bottom half. Cameron Sisneros doubled sharply to right, scoring Jefferson Rojas to cut the deficit to 2–1. The Cubs erupted for three runs in the fifth. Rojas delivered again, roping an RBI double to left field to score Carter Trice and James Triantos, then advanced to third. Sisneros followed with an RBI single to right, bringing Rojas home and giving the Cubs a 4–2 lead. Despite some shaky defense—South Bend committed three errors, including two by Sisneros at first base—Schlaffer turned in a gem. The right-hander pitched seven strong innings, allowing just two hits and one earned run, while striking out five and walking three. Chase Watkins tossed a clean eighth to earn a hold, and Grayson Moore locked down his second save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning. Sisneros made up for his defensive miscues at the plate, going 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs, including a clutch two-out knock in the third. With the series squared at one, the Cubs and Captains will wrap up the first half at 7:05 PM on Thursday. Left-hander Evan Aschenbeck will get the ball for South Bend against Lake County southpaw Josh Hartle.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week, the New York Yankees found themselves in an unexpected turmoil, getting swept by their longtime rivals, the Boston Red Sox, after also losing the previous series to them. Despite a dominant season where Aaron Judge has been an MVP candidate with a .378 average, 26 home runs, and 60 RBIs through June 16, 2025, and the team boasting strong offensive numbers (2nd in HR, 3rd in Runs and OPS), their recent performance, especially the lack of fundamental play and offensive struggles without Judge's consistent heroics, has ignited serious concerns about their World Series aspirations and ability to hold their AL East lead.

The series, concluding on June 8, 2025, saw the Reds overcome early deficits and weather challenges, including rain delays, to secure a 4-2 victory in the finale. Christian Encarnacion-Strand, fresh off the injured list, was a standout, going 7-for-13 with six RBIs, including a solo homer in the fifth inning of the final game. Jose Trevino tied the game with another solo shot, and Matt McLain delivered the decisive blow—a two-run homer in the seventh off Arizona's Zac Gallen, who allowed four runs over 6 2/3 innings. Brady Singer kept the Reds competitive, pitching five innings and allowing two runs despite taking a comebacker to his arm. Taylor Rogers earned the win with two scoreless relief innings, and Tony Santillan sealed the sweep with his second save. The Reds' earlier wins included a 4-3, 10-inning thriller and a 13-1 rout, highlighting their offensive depth and bullpen strength. . Now, the Reds head to Progressive Field for a three-game series against the Cleveland Guardians (34-30), starting today, June 9, 2025. This matchup follows Cincinnati's sweep of Cleveland in May, adding intensity to the battle for the Ohio Cup. The Reds aim to maintain momentum against a Guardians team chasing the AL Central-leading Detroit Tigers. Cincinnati's probable starters are Wade Miley (0-0, 18.00 ERA), Andrew Abbott (5-1, 2.18 ERA), and Nick Lodolo (4-4, 3.21 ERA), facing Cleveland's Luis Ortiz (3-6, 4.02 ERA), Slade Cecconi (1-2, 4.87 ERA), and Logan Allen (3-4, 4.42 ERA). Miley's return from injury makes his start a question mark, but Abbott's consistency and Lodolo's solid outings provide stability. Cleveland's José Ramírez, with 12 homers, remains a threat, though their recent 5-3 loss to Houston exposed vulnerabilities. The Reds, buoyed by their sweep, must navigate Cleveland's strong 17-13 home record. One win secures the Ohio Cup, but Cincinnati's focus is on climbing the NL Central standings. Expect a competitive series with the Reds' bats aiming to exploit Cleveland's pitching.

On June 2, 2025, the Milwaukee Brewers edged out the Cincinnati Reds 3-2 in Game 1 of their series at Great American Ball Park, extending their winning streak to eight games, the longest since August 2023. The Brewers' victory was powered by Christian Yelich's heroics and a resilient pitching effort, while the Reds struggled to capitalize on early momentum. Yelich, fresh off being named National League Player of the Week, delivered the decisive blow with a 417-foot solo home run in the third inning off Reds starter Brady Singer (6-4, 4.60 ERA). The full-count slider, crushed to straightaway center, gave Milwaukee a 3-2 lead they wouldn't relinquish. Yelich's hot streak continued, as he's now batting .450 over a nine-game hitting streak, with six homers and 14 RBIs. Sal Frelick also contributed, going 2-for-4, bolstering the Brewers' offense. The Reds struck first, scoring two runs in the opening inning against Brewers starter Aaron Civale (1-1, 6.00 ERA). However, Civale settled down, pitching 5 1/3 innings, allowing just those two runs while striking out five. His recovery was critical, especially after missing nearly two months with a strained left hamstring. The Brewers' bullpen, a strength all season, sealed the deal. Rob Zastryzny, acquired from the Yankees in May, was pivotal in the sixth, striking out Jose Trevino and inducing a groundout from Santiago Espinal with runners on base. Trevor Megill closed the game with a perfect ninth, earning his 12th save in 13 chances. For Cincinnati, the loss highlighted ongoing offensive struggles. Despite the early lead, the Reds managed only a few hits after the first, with Singer's six innings undermined by Yelich's homer. The Reds' inability to convert opportunities, like the sixth-inning threat, underscored their 29-31 record and inconsistent play at home (14-14). The game, played before a lively Cincinnati crowd with temperatures at 76°F, showcased Milwaukee's depth and resilience. With Freddy Peralta (5-3, 2.77 ERA) set to face Hunter Greene (4-3, 2.63 ERA) in Game 2, the Brewers aim to keep their streak alive. Meanwhile, the Reds, desperate to snap out of their funk, face an uphill battle in this series.

Post-Dispatch podcasts page: https://go.stltoday.com/0hfn43 Please consider subscribing: https://go.stltoday.com/9aigz5 A big, defining topic for the Cardinals' future and their development of a big, defining hitter needs a jumbo-sized Best Podcast in Baseball. For more than a decade, the Cardinals have had to go shopping for their middle-order hitters -- either by trade (Paul Goldcshmidt, Nolan Arenado, Marcell Ozuna) or, rarely, by free agency (Carlos Beltran, Willson Contreras) -- but during this "reset" year where offense has been a major part of their success, the Cardinals seem closer to having homegrown hitters in the middle of the order to build around. Brendan Donovan, currently hitting No. 3, leads the league in doubles and hits. Candidates to climb up to cleanup include Ivan Herrera. There is the catch. Herrera's bright future as a hitter seems clear. Less so, is where he fits at catcher. Kevin Wheeler, host at KMOX/104.1 FM, joins the Best Podcast in Baseball to discuss all of the ramifications of this question: Can the Cardinals develop the middle of the order for a contending team? It's a question thick with implications. With St. Louis Post-Dispatch baseball writer Derrick Goold, Wheeler discusses Herrera's fit as a potential cleanup hitter, what it means that the Cardinals have an advancing group of catching talents in the minors, and whether Herrera needs to be flanked by a fellow prospect for the Cardinals to have a strong lineup. The cost of surefire middle-order hitters is only going up, and increasingly all teams need both lightning and thunder to come from within the house. This BPIB discusses whether the Cardinals need to have Jordan Walker and/or Nolan Gorman join the middle of the order for their development summer to be a success, and where Alec Buleson, JJ Wetherholt, Lars Nootbaar, and Masyn Winn best fit into the lineup of the future. The Cardinals, with 10 different players who have at least 15 RBIs, are cranking out the hits this season and they've won 18 of their past 23 because of the depth of their lineup. Is that what the future holds as well -- not one or two hitters that are the fulcrum of the lineup but a depth that goes all the way to the speed at the bottom? The answer could be the key whether the Cardinals contend in the years they're looking toward as well. South Bend Cubs Snap Skid, Beat Wisconsin 8–3 Behind Strong Outing from Egbert and Big Night from Hernandez The South Bend Cubs finally put together back-to-back wins for the first time in over a month, defeating the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 8–3 with a strong showing both on the mound and at the plate. Kenton Egbert Shines on the Mound Starting pitcher Kenton Egbert delivered his best performance of the season, working five solid innings and allowing just one run. Coming into the game with an 0–5 record and an ERA near 8.00, Egbert found his rhythm early. Though he ran into trouble in the sixth by loading the bases with no outs, reliever Joe Nahas stepped in and limited the damage, allowing just one inherited runner to score. Egbert’s ERA dropped nearly a full point, down to around 7.00. Offense Fires on All Cylinders The Cubs got on the board in the bottom of the third when Drew Bowser singled home Jefferson Rojas. Later in the inning, Reginald Preciado drove in Cristian Hernandez with another RBI single to make it 2–0. The sixth inning proved pivotal. Wisconsin reliever Tanner Shears struggled, hitting two batters and walking Rojas with the bases loaded to force in a run. A wild pitch brought in Brian Kalmer, and Cristian Hernandez capped the rally with an RBI single to score Rafael Morel, stretching the lead to 7–1. Hernandez Stuffing the Stat Sheet Cristian Hernandez had a standout night, going 4-for-5 with a triple, double, two singles, and three RBIs. He also showed off his speed on the basepaths, swiping two stolen bases. His all-around performance anchored the Cubs’ offensive surge. Looking Ahead The 8–3 victory gives the Cubs some much-needed momentum as they now hit the road for a series in Davenport, Iowa against the Quad Cities River BanditsSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hour 1 The Knicks lost Game 1 to the Pacers in overtime after blowing a significant fourth-quarter lead. Despite the loss, Gio remains confident in the Knicks, believing they will dominate Game 2, especially recalling their past series win against the Pacers after Miller's similar gesture. The show concluded with Gio reiterating his faith in the Knicks, addressing calls from concerned fans. Hour 2 We were encouraged by the Knicks' offensive performance despite their loss. Gio received an old Washington Post article from 1989 where Michael Wilbon wrote about Boomer. A caller mistakenly identified Fat Joe at the game, but Gio's research revealed it was actually one of CC Sabathia's agents. A caller suggested players should go home after a loss and speak to the media the next day. The show then featured a clip of Marv Albert interviewing Boomer after his Super Bowl loss. Jerry's update included Pacers radio audio of Haliburton's shot that they initially thought was a game-winner. In other sports, Jasson Dominguez hit a walk-off home run for the Yankees against the Rangers, and the Mets beat the Red Sox with a Francisco Lindor home run. Jerry also played his signature "What the hell is that sound?" segment. Hour 3 Tyrese Haliburton's "choke" gesture toward the Knicks in Game 1 could become a defining moment of the series. In a show of local team spirit, NYC has even renamed some streets and intersections after Knicks players, prompting Boomer to quip about taking a picture at "Precious Achiuwa Place'. Jerry's update included Kevin Harlan's call of the Pacers' overtime comeback win. Tommy Lugauer offered "3 things to know" about the loss, which Ben Stiller notably "agreed" with in a quote tweet. In other sports, Jasson Dominguez hit a walk-off home run for the Yankees (with Dave Sims on the call), and Colts owner Jim Irsay passed away at 65. NFL news included the "Tush Push" not being banned, described by Jeffrey Lurie as a "wet dream," and Aaron Glenn's early impressions of Justin Fields in camp. The segment ended with a discussion about one of Boomer's friends who suspected he had a kidney stone. Hour 4 Listeners called in to discuss attending "Kickoff To Summer" and the Knicks' blown lead in their Game 1 loss to the Pacers.
