The Southeastern 16 crew breaks down and offers predictions for the Oxford Regional of the 2025 NCAA baseball tournament. Topics include: Ole Miss saw bullpen improvement that offset the loss of starter Mason Nichols thanks to a bullpen of Mason Morris, Will McCausland, Walker Hooks, Cade Townsend, Hudson Calhoun and Gunnar Dennis that pitched its best at season's end. The Rebels were one of the nation's home-run leaders thanks to Austin Fawley (17), Mitchell Sanford (15 HR), Judd Utermark (16), Isaac Humphrey and Ryan Moerman (11) and Will Furniss (10). The Rebels nearly won the SEC tournament; can they carry that momentum into a home regional? Georgia Tech brings a star-studded lineup led by potential 2026 No. 1 MLB Draft pick Drew Burress, Kyle Lodise and Alex Hernandez that hit .315/416/.538 as a team. Does Tech have the pitching to bring home a regional crown? Western Kentucky is a two-seed that could be better than some threes in other regionals. The Hilltoppers were paced by Conference USA player of the year Ryan Wideman (10 HR, 45 SB) as part of a lineup that hit 70 homers and swiped 126 bases. A pitching staff of Drew Whalen, Jack Bennett, Lucas Hartman, Gavin Perry, Dawson Hall, Cal Higgins and Patrick Morris helped WKU to a 3.35 ERA, which ranked as third-best in the country. Murray State hit .301/.419/.497 as a team and might be the toughest four-seed in the field. Can the Racers slug their way to wins with Jonathan Hogart and Carson Garner (16 homers), Will Vierling (10) and crew?
The Southeastern 16 crew looks at the field of four in the Baton Rouge Regional and gives our picks. LSU is one of the national favorites to win the entire tournament thanks to aces Kade Anderson and Anthony Eyanson, not to mention the rest of the TIgers' talented staff that includes Zac Cowan, Casan Evans, Chase Shores and others. But the Tigers haven't yet as well lately and need for stars Jared Jones, Derek Curiel and Daniel Dickinson, among others, to click as the postseason moves on. Any way you slice it, the Tigers are heavy favorites to advance. Dallas Baptist, coached by the well-respected Dan Hefner, will be LSU's biggest challenge thanks to a lineup that hit 97 home runs and stole 103 bases. Clayton Krauss, Nathan Humphreys, Michael Dattalo are among a star-studded lineup whose biggest name is catcher Grant Jay, whose name will be called in the top rounds of the upcoming MLB Draft. How far pitchers Ryan Borberg, former LSU pitcher Micah Buckram and James Ellwanger can carry DBU will go a long way in determining whether it can pull an upset. Rhode Island hit .309/.431/.514 as a team and had Athony DePino (19 homers), Jack Hopko and DJ Perron (15) and Eric Genther smack double-digit home runs. But can a pitching staff led by relief ace Joe Sabbath do enough to make the Rams competitive? Little Rock won the OVC title and now pins its hope on pitcher Jackson Wells, who's had a tremendous college career and is capable of coming up with a big outing.

He met his future wife, who is from Lac La Biche, and ended up staying in the province. Watch Off the Bench Presented by UDF with Chatterbox Sports Monday-Friday 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. LIVE on the Chatterbox Sports YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE to the channel to ensure you never miss a thing. Chase Burns, the Cincinnati Reds' highly touted pitching prospect, is set to make his much-anticipated professional debut in a Spring Training game against the Texas Rangers on Wednesday, March 5, 2025. Selected as the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft out of Wake Forest, Burns has quickly become a cornerstone of the Reds' future plans, boasting a triple-digit fastball and a slider widely regarded as one of the best in the prospect ranks. While this debut won't be televised, fans can still follow along via Statcast data, offering a glimpse into the 22-year-old's electric arsenal as he takes the mound for the first time in a Reds uniform. Burns' journey to this moment has been marked by dominance and deliberate preparation. At Wake Forest, he led college baseball with 191 strikeouts in 100 innings during the 2024 season, earning ACC Pitcher of the Year honors and cementing his status as a top draft talent. His fastball, which can touch 102 mph with exceptional vertical break, pairs devastatingly with a slider that features late, tight movement—attributes that have scouts projecting him as a future ace. After being drafted, the Reds opted to hold him out of minor league action in 2024, instead focusing on instructional league work to ensure he was primed for a full 2025 campaign. This approach mirrors the development path of fellow Wake Forest alum Rhett Lowder, who debuted for the Reds in 2024 just over a year after being drafted. For the Reds, Burns represents a critical piece in their ongoing effort to build a competitive rotation. With young arms like Hunter Greene, Nick Lodolo, and Lowder already in the mix, Burns' arrival could elevate Cincinnati's pitching staff to elite status. His debut comes at a pivotal time as the Reds aim to rebound from a middling 2024 season and push toward contention under new manager Terry Francona. While Spring Training stats are unofficial, this outing will offer an early look at how Burns' stuff translates against professional hitters, including those from a Rangers squad featuring starter Tyler Mahle. Though Burns is unlikely to break camp with the big-league club, a strong spring could accelerate his timeline to the majors. Reds fans, eager for a glimpse of their top prospect, will be watching closely as he takes his first step toward what many hope will be a transformative career in Cincinnati.

A revealing moment for the Cardinals and all who evaluate or rank their prospects came in the first round of the 2021 MLB Draft. With the 18th pick, the Cardinals went straight back to their sweet spot and chose Michael McGreevy, a right-handed pitcher out of UC-Santa Barbara and straight from central casting. He fit the profile of the pitcher the Cardinals had taken many times before. McGreevy has elbowed his way into the Cardinals' plans for their starting rotation less than four years later. All around the pick, the game and how rivals evaluated pitching was changing. That's the description Baseball America prospects writer Geoff Pontes provides in a brand new episode of the Best Podcast in Baseball with host and Post-Dispatch baseball writer Derrick Goold. Pontes is fresh off ranking the Cardinals' top 10 prospects for the industry's leading prospect magazine, and he joins the podcast hours after finishing the organization's top 30 prospects for Baseball America's Handbook. That indispensable rite of spring training is more of a guidebook this season for Cardinals' fans as it will show them where the Cardinals begin this reinvestment in player development -- and how far they have to go. Pontes discusses how chose between 2024 first-round pick JJ Wetherholt and 2024 BA Pitcher of the Year Quinn Mathews for the Cardinals' No. 1 prospect. He provides insight on two names to know, rising electric talent Yairo Padilla, a shortstop and one of the youngest players at his or any level, and catcher/slugger Rainiel Rodriguez, who had 10 home runs and a 1.145 OPS in 41 games this past summer for the Cardinals' academy team in the Dominican Republic. Pontes describes how the Cardinals fell behind on pitching development while staying ahead of other teams with how they approached hitters. The Cardinals have produced a steady stream of contributing hitters, either for them or other teams, but the podcast explores how they've been unable to launch one thing: a tent-pole hitter for the lineup. Within Pontes' top 10 from the Cardinals system, there are four hitters in the top eight, and could one of them (Wetherholt, Chase Davis) be that talent? Pontes offers his sleeper prospect within the organization and what Cardinals are likely to be top 100 talents in all of the minors, with Wetherholt likely headed for the top 30. Located in Massachusetts, Pontes saw how Chaim Bloom revived Boston's pitching pipeline, even if he's no longer there to benefit from it, and details how the Cardinals are ahead of the Red Sox and could see the same improvement under Bloom's leadership. Pontes gives details on where the Cardinals can improve, and toward the end of the podcast the conversation arrives at the crux of the Cardinals' "reset": How they got there. What was the tell in the 2021 draft. How they up to pace, and how fast. Two pitchers might offer early indications of the direction the Cardinals are headed and the improvements afoot: right-hander Tekoah Roby and lefty Cooper Hjerpe. They rank Nos. 6 and 7, respectively, in Pontes' top 10 for the Cardinals system. Both have upside, and Pontes is bullish on one of them -- especially as the Cardinals modernize their approach to pitching around him. The Best Podcast in Baseball is sponsored by Closets by Design of St. Louis and it's a production of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, StlToday.com, and Derrick Goold. It is available wherever you get your podcasts, from iTunes to Spotify, to right there on the StlToday.com web site. Happy holidays and here's to a healthy start to a new year.
The 2025 MLB Draft Lottery concluded the evening of Tuesday, December 10th. Now, the 2025 MLB Draft order is set. Although the draft is still seven months away SGPN is stepping up to the plate to deliver a 2025 MLB Mock Draft. My name is Noah Bieniek, and I host The College Baseball Experience and follow amateur baseball all year. This was a super fun exercise for me to gauge the talent for next Spring. Once again the MLB Draft Lottery determined the top 6 picks for this year's MLB Draft. Washington Nationals were awarded the No. 1 overall selection for this Summer. In saying that, Seattle was the biggest Lottery winner. The Mariners had a 1.5% chance of landing a top 3 pick and shot up from No. 17 to No. 3 overall! St. Louis was also a huge beneficiary from the Lottery results. The Cardinals rose from No. 16 to No. 5 overall! However on the other side of the coin both Miami and Colorado had a 22.5% chance of landing the No. 1 pick. Instead the Rockies slid to No. 4 and Marlins fell as far as they possibly could to Pick No. 7! This year has extra sting for Rocktober fans as this is now back-to-back seasons with the best odds to land No. 1 overall and dropping out of the pole position. The High School 2025 MLB Draft class does not have a ton of top-tier talent in the first-round range. Established college pitchers are also expected to be a limited commodity in this year's first round. '25 will likely be another college-hitter-heavy first round, just like in 2024. At the top of many big boards, you will see Texas A&M's five-tool talent, Jace LaViolette. Slightly behind him, you see a pair of college arms, LHP Jamie Arnold (Florida State) and RHP Tyler Bremner (UC Santa Barbara). Ethan Holliday, brother of Jackson, son of Matt, and nephew of Oklahoma State Baseball Coach Josh Holliday, will likely be a top 5 pick as well. A cluster of college hitters, featuring Brendan Summerhill from Arizona, Cam Cannarella from Clemson and Aiva Arquette from Oregon State backfills the 2025 draft class' 99th percentile of talent. Often, MLB organizations do not draft the best player available. Instead, they draft players that fit their organizational strengths. They do this because they typically develop those players best. I don't have any industry/team sources. Plus trying to drill every pick correctly on the day of the draft is hard enough. In this exercise all of the picks in my way too early 2025 MLB Mock Draft are based on each organization's past draft history. Tune into The College Baseball Experience podcast and show to hear about any more 2025 MLB Draft developments. Stick with Noah Bieniek and TCE throughout the NCAA Baseball offseason for periodical transfer portal and coaching carousel updates as well as any other news along the way.
