Baltimore Orioles beat reporter Matt Weyrich from The Baltimore Sun visits the Jack Vita Show to chat about the O's highly active offseason. The Orioles are making quick work of the offseason. The club signed former New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso to a five-year, $155 million contract, the richest free agent deal in franchise history. The O's patched up their bullpen, inking closer Ryan Helsley to a two-year, $28 million deal. Baltimore has also been very active in the trade market. Last month, the club dealt promising young pitcher Grayson Rodriguez to the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for outfielder Taylor Ward, in a rare, one-for-one trade. Then, the club turned around and acquired pitching, trading prospects Slater de Brun, Caden Bodine, Michael Forret, Austin Overn, and a Competitive Balance Round A draft pick to the Tampa Bay Rays for starting pitcher Shane Baz. Matt is here to break it all down with Jack, discussing how the Alonso deal came to fruition, and how the O's lineup stacks up with him and Taylor Ward in it. The pitchers with the most wins in the 1970's is a grocery list of Hall of Famers. Gaylord, Carlton, Fergie & Catfish to name just a few… but on the cover of Sports Illustrated July 21, 1975 were two other future Hall of Famers who SI called Baseball's Toughest Pitchers: Tom Seaver and Jim Palmer. After they each won the Cy Young Award in 1973, both of these aces suffered through injury-plagued, down seasons in 1974. Palmer was 7-12 in 26 starts while Tom Terrific was 11-11 while throwing the fewest innings of his then 8-year career.  Healthy again in '75, the two #1's were back at the top of their games… and both would go on to win the Cy Young again in 75, the 3rd for Seaver and the 2nd for Palmer who would match Seaver with his 3rd a year later. Palmer would end the decade with 186 wins, the most in the 70's while Seaver would finish tied for 3rd with 178. They were the best of the best and cementing a resume that would end with both of them in Cooperstown. Mike Torrez was every bit as tough as the two cover guys. Starting his career with the Cardinals, Torrez came into his own after he was dealt to Montreal in 1971. He won 16 games for the Expos in '72 and another 15 in '74… but it was in 1975 when it all came together for the winningest Mexican pitcher of all-time. Teaming with Palmer, Torrez had a sensational season going 20-9 with a 3.06 ERA over 270 innings of work. He started 36 games and completed 16 of them. It would be his only season in Baltimore but it was one to remember for the righty from Topeka, Kansas. A year later he won 16 games in Oakland before another sensational season in New York with the Yankees. After a regular season that saw Torrez win 17 games, 14 of them in pinstripes, Torrez had an October to remember. And if it weren't for a historic performance from Mr. October himself, more would remember how brilliant Torrez was in the Yankees World Series win over the Dodgers. With the series tied at 1-1 heading to Los Angles, Torrez matched up against Tommy John, Torrez went the distance in a 5-3 win over L.A. striking out 9. Just 4 days later, Torrez got the start again and behind Reggie Jackson's 3 home runs, and another complete game win out of Torrez, the Yankees were champions again… their first title since 1962. Reggie was the MVP of the series but Torrez could have easily won that with his 2 CG wins over Tommy Lasorda's club. From there, this tough hombre would go to Boston where he would win more games in his career than any other club in his big league career before ending his 18 year career with Tom Seaver and the Mets and then 2 games with the A's in 1984.  But it was the 70's where he was one of the best, winning 134 games that decade, 15th most in all of baseball, and certainly proving he was one of the toughest pitchers in the game. Looking back on his career, Torrez tells us that Bob Gibson had an integral part in his success, teaching him how to throw his famous slider. Torrez bookends that by sharing how he went to bat for a young Mets pitcher to make the club out of Spring Training, even though it might mean the end of his time in the majors. Torrez told the GM, you gotta let this kid make the team… this kid is ready. This kid was Doc Gooden. Torrez talks about both Palmer and Seaver as pitchers… about Weaver and Martin as managers. About winning those two games with the Yankees in the Series… and about losing to the Yanks a year later when Bucky Dent hit one over the wall in Game 163. Let's get started. Lesley Logan 0:48  Hi, Be It babe, happy Fuck Yeah Friday. We made it. We're here. We did it, and today's a holiday. And so I am super excited, because I told my team I want to take every bank holiday off, and so I'm off. And probably sticking around where I live, to be honest, because we're traveling later, and I'll have more FYFs on that. But at any rate, if you celebrate this holiday, Happy Holiday. You guys, we do this is a short, quick, inspirational episode to, like, just help you, like, kick the weekend off on a high note, because, oh my God, if you're like, waiting for Friday and go, okay, the weekend is here, and that's the win because I don't have to work. That's not what we want. We want to actually, like, celebrate the things in between. So I also share something that inspired me on the internet, because we need something inspirational then I give your wins and I give my wins. Lesley Logan 1:34  So here we go. This is 18 brutal sentences that could change your life. Some of these will sting. This is from Alpha Woman Mindset on Instagram. Some of these will sting. All of them will wake you up. So I'm ready for this. 18 of them. One, you are what you do, not what you say you'll do. So discipline doesn't speak it shows Ooh. Number two, the longer you stay on the wrong train, the more expensive it is to get home. I love that one. Number three, every excuse you make is robbing your future blind. Number four, ambition without action doesn't make you powerful, it makes you anxious. Number five, keep every stone they threw at you. You got, you got an empire to build. Number six, the darkness in your mind doesn't erase the light in your heart. Number seven, becoming the best version of yourself comes with a lot of goodbyes. That is true. Number eight, your comfort zone is a pretty prison, and you've been decorating it for too long. Number nine, if you don't build your dream, someone else will hire you to build theirs. Number 10, one day you'll wish you started today and tomorrow won't be another option anymore. Number 11, regret will always hurt more than discipline ever will. Number 12, we suffer more in our imagination than we ever will in reality. Stop writing tragedies that haven't happened yet. Oh, that's good. Number 13, at some point, the pain of staying stuck will outweigh the fear of moving forward. Number 14, your best moments will come from the risk you were too scared to take. Good. Okay, number 15, your future self is watching make her proud, not disappointed. Number 16, any lesson you avoid will come back louder next time. That's fucking true. Number 17, nothing is scarier than living your whole life knowing you had more in you. That is scary. 18, in the end, your only competition was a woman you could have become. Make sure she wouldn't pity you. These are amazing. She said, these are just weren't just sentences. They are mirrors. Don't just save this. Let it change you. So, so I'm super, super grateful that came across my feed, because I absolutely, absolutely needed to hear that I needed that in my life for sure. Lesley Logan 4:00  Okay, time for one of your wins. Lori Watson, a longtime Agency member OG, OG of the OPC members and OG eLevate member, one of our favorite humans in the world, said a shout out to Mindi and LL. This morning, Friday, I was able to do Tuesday's reform with Mindi and then the tower with Lesley. I did them both prior to seeing my 11 a.m. client, and incorporated both classes into our session. She loved it. So far, I've only made one class live, thank you, Yasmin, due to my schedule, so I'm glad I'll be able to get back and watch the replays. So that was during our Spring Training and Lori Watson got to have that amazing win. I think it's really fun, right? Like, you can't do something live, but you can access the replay, like, way to go, Lori, for celebrating that you did that. How many people sign up for things and then don't do it because they couldn't go live, or they don't sign up for things because they couldn't do it in the live? But there's a replay. You guys, there's a lot of things in life that have replays, and if you watch the replay, that's a double win, because not only do you sign up for the thing, but then you took time out of the day without accountability to do it. So way to go, Lori Watson. Lesley Logan 5:03  Melissa Capitano, also been an eLevate an Agency member, one of our favorite studio owners. She's kicking ass and doing a great job. She said, it's been a rough few weeks. Today, I knew I needed some Pilates, but couldn't get myself motivated, so I decided to do a one rep drill, and it felt so great to move. Yeah, the one rep drill for the win. You guys. If you don't know what that is, I am filming it for Pilates Anytime. It's going to be in an upcoming class that will come out so that you can literally log in, hit play and just do one rep of the mat. It's really, really amazing. It's really great. It's going to be in the next couple months. So hit us up if you're interested in it. But I think a lot of times we are like, oh my God, I don't have time for a full workout, so I'm just not going to do it. You'll never, have you ever felt better not doing the workout that you thought you could do? Like, no, you will always feel better if you do some movement. So there's that. So way to go,, Melissa Capitano, for teaching us that, reminding us of that. Lesley Logan 6:02  Okay, so here's what my win is. My win is eLevate, my mentorship program is just so great. It I learned so much. I learn, every time I teach eLevate, even though it's the same content, the stuff that I love, it's something I know, each group teaches me even more and I get to grow, and I get to watch them grow. So like, it's really, really awesome. And what I'm celebrating is that we are coming upon the Q&A part of where we do a live class and a live Q&A for people who are interested in eLevate who haven't applied yet. We're going into this. It'll be on July 9th, and so you can come if you want to come, just, just let us know, and we'll get you the link and everything. But we, were going into this with the program, all, more than half-filled, so I'm excited to see the face of people who are interested. I'm also a little nervous for them, because there's not a lot of spaces, and I cannot do more than two. I can only do the two that I'm doing next year. And so between those two rounds, we're more than half filled. And I'm just so proud of the team for all that they've done to make sure it's really easy for people, but also really proud of the work that I've done over the last several years putting together this program. Like, I know that can sound like a brag, but like, also we should brag a bit I've been working really hard on this program, and also the all the people who've done it after year after year, who tell people about it like, it's just a sign that, like this program, it really does what it says it's gonna do, and everyone wins. Then, like, my win is that everyone wins because in the future, clients are winning. It's just really cool. So I'm so proud. I can't even wait to see who comes live on Tuesday to that workout and that Q&A. But even if you're not a Pilates instructor, here's the deal, like, I hope my win shows you that you can be proud of things being half-filled, you can be proud of things you continue to do because they fill your cup and that they impact people.
