Send us a textDan was not the voter who didn't vote for Ichiro. But we all wish we knew who it was! For the 3rd straight year Dan joined the podcast to discuss the final HOF voting.  He voted for Bobby Abreu, Carlos Beltrán, Andruw Jones, Manny Ramirez, Alex Rodriguez, CC Sabathia, Ichiro Suzuki, Chase Utley, and Billy Wagner. 9 in total and we discussed why he didn't vote for one more - could have been King Felix, Andy Pettitte, or Dustin Pedrioia or even David Wright! We also discussed allowing voters to vote for more candidates than the current limit of 10. Gordon suggested that if a player got one vote in his first year on the ballot he could stay on for year 2 and then be subject to some sort of minimum percentage - 5% or even less. As #Mets fans we are thrilled that Billy Wagner finally made it. New Yorkers will be traveling to Cooperstown this coming July to celebrate CC and Billy. Dan is working on a couple of new articles including an upcoming one on Babe Dahlgren's foray into video analysis more than 70 years ago! Please subscribe to our podcast and thanks for listening! 2025 BBWAA HOF Ballot Happy New Year! It's once again time to talk about the Hall of Fame, this time the writers' ballot. There are plenty of worthy candidates returning to the ballot, and two standout first year candidates to watch. Japanese icon Ichiro Suzuki is a lock for induction this year. Although he didn't debut until he was 27, the spry savant amassed over 3,000 hits, 1,400 runs, 10 All-Stars and Gold Gloves, not to mention two batting titles, a Rookie of the Year, and a MVP. He also holds the single season hit record, with 262 in the 2004 season. Although not the first Japanese player in MLB, his smashing success paved the way for other Japanese stars such as Hideki Matsui, Yu Darvish, and Shohei Ohtani. The only question about Ichiro is whether or not he'll be unanimous. Don't sleep on ace lefty C.C. Sabathia's chances on his debut ballot. As one of just three left handed pitchers with 3,000 strikeouts (Steve Carlton and Randy Johnson the other two), Sabathia was the definition of a workhorse. Add in 250 wins, a Cy Young, a World Series, and an ALCS MVP, and you've got a Hall of Famer, especially in this era. Among the other first-year candidates, there are a few who could survive the 5% threshold to remain on ballot for another year. Félix Hernández was one of the most dominant starters in baseball from 2007 - 2015, but that might not be enough for the writers. Dustin Pedroia and Ian Kinsler were both excellent second basemen that frankly lack the longevity needed for enshrinement, but are certainly worthy cases to discuss, particularly on the same ballot as sabermetric darling Chase Utley. Russell Martin and Brian McCann come up short in the traditional counting stats that writers demand from catchers, but their advanced framing metrics put them in similar ranks as Joe Mauer, Buster Posey, and Yadier Molina. Of the returning candidates, Billy Wagner came up just short last year (73.8%), and he will need a push to get over in his final year on the ballot. In his second to last year, Andruw Jones appears to be stalling around 60% of the vote, not far off from induction, but not close enough to be confident he'll make it this year or the next. Carlos Beltrán and Chase Utley appear to be on track for induction in a few years time, though they'll need to continue their growth. AROD, ManRam, and Andy Pettitte would be in the Hall if not for PEDs, and they're not getting in anytime soon. How many will join Dick Allen and Dave Parker for a July celebration? Find out January 21st when the results are announced. October 21, 1998 - The New York Yankees close out their historic season with 3 - 0 victory against the San Diego Padres, sweeping San Diego in four games to win their record 24th World Series championship. Andy Pettitte, who struggled mightily throughout the regular season secured the victory with 7 1/3 strong innings. With the Yankees clinging to a 3--0 lead in the eighth, the Padres were able to load the bases against Yankee's reliever Jeff Nelson. Yankees closer, Mariano Rivera came in and shut down Jim Leyritz, known for his clutch postseason home runs, to end the threat and went on to pitch a scoreless ninth inning to end the Series. Yankee first baseman Scott Brosius sensed as the ninth inning began that he would make the final play, and in fact did. The Padres pinch-hitter Mark Sweeney grounded to third base, and after Brosius threw to first for the final out, he raised his hands into the air. Mariano Rivera, the Yankees' closer, dropped to his knees as the other Yankees piled on around him. Scott Brosius was named Series MVP on the strength of the 2 home runs he hit in Game 3, including one off of Padres closer Trevor Hoffman to give the Yankees a 3-0 Series lead. The Game Four victory gave the Yankees 125 wins against 50 losses for a .714 winning percentage, the best in the majors since their Murderers' Row club of 1927, as their American League record of 114 regular-season victories were the most ever for a major league champion team at that time.October 21, 1975, Carlton Fisk of the Boston Red Sox powers a dramatic 12th- inning home run to complete one of the most memorable games in World Series history. Playing in Game Six, Fisk homers off the foul pole at Fenway Park, giving the Red Sox a 7-6 win over the Cincinnati Reds. The Red Sox had trailed in the eighth inning, when Bernie Carbo hit a three-run, pinch-hit homer to tie the game at 6.In 2002 this event, seen by a record-75.9 million viewers, will be chosen as one of baseball's most memorable moments.

Hours after Japanese sensation Yoshinobu Yamamoto agreed to terms on a 12-year, $325 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, longtime national baseball writer Barry Bloom visits the Jack Vita Show to break it all down! Yamamoto, age-25, posted a sub-1.70 ERA in Japan in each of the last three seasons. He is a three-time MVP and three-time pitching Triple Crown winner. The Dodgers are pairing Yamamoto with newly-acquired, two-time American League MVP Shohei Ohtani. Nine months ago, the duo won the World Baseball Classic as members of the Japanese National Team. Now, they will try to make a run at a World Series title, as teammates once again. In less than two weeks, the Dodgers committed over $1 billion to just two players. Barry and Jack discuss the Dodgers' aggressive offseason and assess the potential risks and rewards attached to both free agent signings, in addition to the acquisition and corresponding extension of Tyler Glasnow. Will the Dodgers run away with the National League in 2024, and win their first championship in a full, 162-game season since 1989? Will the Dodgers win a handful of titles in the coming years? How much pressure will the club be under in the upcoming season, coming off their big offseason moves? The San Francisco Giants continue to struggle to land big-time free agents, striking out on Ohtani and Yamamoto. The club did however agree to a six-year, $118 million deal with Korean star Jung Hoo Lee. Elsewhere in the National League West, the San Diego Padres are slashing payroll, dealing Juan Soto, and bidding farewell to free agents Seth Lugo, Michael Wacha, Blake Snell and Josh Hader. Meanwhile, the Arizona Diamondbacks are building on to their young core which reached the World Series in 2023, re-signing Lourdes Gurriel Jr., trading for Eugenio Suarez and agreeing to a four-year, $80 million deal with Eduardo Rodriguez. The club has also been linked to free agents JD Martinez and Justin Turner. Barry and Jack cover all things NL West (except for the Colorado Rockies)! Barry analyzes the Soto trade from both the Padres' and the New York Yankees' perspectives. He discusses where Soto, Trent Grisham and Alex Verdugo will fit into the Yankees' lineup in 2024. Barry and Jack comment on other free agent signings from around the league, including the moves that the Kansas City Royals have made. Later, Barry shares about his career and his Hall of Fame ballot. Barry used all ten of his votes this year, voting for Adrian Beltre, Todd Helton, Joe Mauer, Alex Rodriguez, Manny Ramirez, Andy Pettitte, Gary Sheffield, Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley and Billy Wagner. Barry makes a compelling argument for both Wagner and Pettitte. Wagner is in his ninth year on the ballot and is gaining momentum. Last year, he received 68.1% of the vote. Pettitte, in his sixth year, has been entirely overlooked. He received just 17.0% last year. Now 72 years-old, Barry is entering his 49th season as a Major League Baseball writer. He was the San Diego Padres beat writer for the San Diego Tribune from 1982 to 1998, and has since written for Bloomberg News, MLB.com, Forbes and SportBusiness. He currently is a senior writer at Sportico. You can follow Barry on Twitter (@Boomskie) and check out his work at Sportico!

The hosts do their weekly check-in on the Shohei Ohtani situation in Anaheim, and stress the fact that if the Angels decide to hold on to Ohtani, they need to be big buyers at the deadline. What did front offices learn from the Josh Hader trade last summer? Also, how are the best teams in baseball approaching the deadline? Coney believes the Yankees addition of Andy Pettitte to their staff is another example of teams trying to copy the Braves blend of real experience and new information.  Download the DraftKings Sportsbook app and use my promo code SLAB 00:00 INTRO 02:27 The Opener 11:10 Rays 4-14 in July 16:06 Checking in on Shohei Ohtani 26:48 Learning something from the Josh Hader trade 33:41 What will the top 4 teams do at the deadline? 38:51 Yankees 46:09 OUTRO GAMBLING PROBLEM? The New York Yankees are 100 games into the season, and we're wondering, are they a disappointment, or is this what everyone expected? We discuss our biggest disappointments and surprises (some may be surprising, and others not so much). The Yankees hired Andy Pettitte as an advisor for the rest of the season, and he will be with the team when he can be. Is this a good move for the team? What's your ideal outfield? We go through all the guys in the outfield on the current roster and on the 40-man, and Steve goes through the combinations he thinks are ideal right now, with the roster not exactly where everyone expected it to be. Then we preview the second half of the Subway Series and give everyone our bold predictions. Pettitte news: https://nypost.com/2023/07/23/yankees-hire-andy-pettitte-as-adviser-with-franchise-continues-shift/Join our subtext! https://joinsubtext.com/lockedonyankeesWhat is subtext? https://youtu.be/BItWi-kbIJY?t=1468Subscribe on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCH5857VCyYLAzsWr9vHk4sQFollow Stacey On Twitter: https://twitter.com/StaceGotsSubscribe to Steve's YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@stevegranadoFollow Steve On Twitter: https://twitter.com/SteveGranadoFollow the Show On Twitter: https://twitter.com/LockedOnYankeesSupport Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!DaveDownload Dave today at Dave.com/mlb. Hour 1: The entire show is actually here today: Boomer, Gio, Jerry, Al & Eddie. Boomer has finally come around to Gio's thinking: The Mets season is over. Gio could not believe how slow Giancarlo Stanton ‘runs' the bases. Boomer said overnight host Chris McMonigle does not look healthy. McMonigle comes into the studio as Boomer wants to discuss his weight. C-Mac said he got blood work done and it's all good, even the cholesterol. Jerry is here for his first update and Boomer asked him about the ‘man bucket' idea that Jerry had. The Yankees swept the Royals over the weekend and Anthony Rizzo had himself a great day yesterday. He hit his first HR in 2 months and was 4-for-4. Boomer said the next 12 games will determine the Yankees season. A group of NFL running backs got together on Zoom on Saturday night to talk about their contract situations. In the final segment of the hour, Joe Benigno wants tickets to see the Jets and Chiefs and he didn't ask his new golfing buddy, Rob Saleh. Gio hooked him up with Winters Bros for the tickets and Boomer is calling that a leech spot by Joe B. Gio caught a 60 lb yellowfin tuna over the weekend.  Hour 2: Sauce Gardner gave Aaron Rodgers a #8 gold chain with diamonds. Boomer told us a month ago Rodgers was coming for a few years, and it finally came out in the news. At 9am the Jets have an announcement that's going to be pretty cool. Boomer said Tyreek Hill didn't sign with the Jets because of NY taxes. Gio wondered if the Jets might trade Mekhi Becton the same way they cut Denzel Mims. Gio thinks he will be on the team based on how much weight he did lose. Saquon Barkley has removed the Giants from his social media. We talked about the RB position and the contract situation between the Giants and Barkley. Jerry is here for an update but first former Bengals WR Carl Pickens calls in to congratulate Boomer on his Ring of Honor and Carl had some fun Boomer stories. Rob Saleh talked about the great connection between Aaron Rodgers and Garrett Wilson. Chris Jones is holding out in Kansas City which surprised Andy Reid. In the final segment of the hour, the new WFAN lineup starts today.  Hour 3: Magic Johnson was talking about the Washington Commanders changing their name again. Anthony Gallo comes in studio and he updates us on the freckle on his scrotal sack. Someone who works here named Jack Stern took some shots at Gallo. Gio heard that nobody likes Jack Stern. Jerry returns for an update but first Boomer has a list of the top offenses going into this NFL season. A guy named ‘Al' is the jeweler for many of the Jets players. Shohei Ohtani hit a HR in what MAY be his final game at home for the Angels. Jerry had lots of audio from Brian Harman as he won the Open in golf. In the final segment of the hour, Gio tells us how well Barbie did at the box office.  Hour 4: The Jets are bringing back the ‘Sack Exchange' era jerseys. They will wear them week one vs the Bills and later in the season against the Chiefs. Al tried on a bunch of new Jets hats and he settled on the one that Woody Johnson wears. Jerry returns for his final update of the morning but first Gio tells us that Tom Brady spent the night with Bradley Cooper's ex, Irina Shayk. Mecole Hardman is excited to play with the Jets since his nickname is Jet. Nick Chubb and a bunch of RBs had a Zoom call on Saturday but not much came about it. Dan Campbell talked about expectations for the Lions and the ‘hype train'. The Yankees swept the Royals and Anthony Rizzo went 4-for-4 including a HR. Boomer doesn't like all of the ads behind home plate at the Yankees game. In the final segment of the show, BT and Sal are still meeting with Spike. Their new show debuts in just a few minutes. BT comes in studio to talk about the historic day for the station. Gio reveals his middle name is Francis.

No other players were voted in to be inducted, although Colorado Rockies great Todd Helton (72.2%) and closer Billy Wagner (68.1%) came close, and are on track to enter the Hall soon. 2000 National League MVP Jeff Kent was denied entry for the tenth time, and now falls off the writer's ballot. Travis Hafner is today's guest on the Post Game podcast. Travis played twelve years in the Major Leagues with the Texas Rangers (2002), New York Yankees (2013) and most notably, the Cleveland Indians (2003-2012). The former first baseman and designated hitter describes growing up in rural North Dakota and making it to the Majors despite not playing organized baseball until college. He discusses his MLB-record for six grand slams in a season and the origin of his nickname, Pronk. In addition to sharing memories of his time in Cleveland, Travis details his time with the Yankees--most importantly, finding Jesus Christ in the Bronx. Travis describes the significant role Andy Pettitte and Mariano Rivera played in his spiritual growth. You will be encouraged as he talks about his faith, family, and post-career activities.
