Dr. Alycia Halladay joins we to discuss the topic of Profound Autism. If you're not familiar with Alycia's work, she is the Chief Science Officer for The Autism Science Foundation, and host of the excellent show, The ASF Weekly Science Podcast.  In this episode, we discuss the changes in Autism diagnosis from the DSM IV to V, the Lancet Commission paper on Profound Autism, why there is a need for this distinction in the Autism spectrum, the conditions under which an individual would be classified as having Profound Autism, the estimated proportion of Autistics who have Profound Autism, the differences in the distribution of sex-based differences in Profound and Non-profound populations, person vs. identity-first language, the importance of reducing stigma for everyone with Autism, criticisms of the proposal of this category, and responses to those criticisms. Even though we packed a lot into this interview, there is way more to this conversation than we had time for, so I'd like to revisit this again sometime in the future. In the meantime, if  you're in the New England area, consider attending The Profound Autism Summit, which is taking place on April 5th, 2024 in Burlington, Massachusetts. Alycia will be speaking at that event, and will go into even more detail than we did in this podcast. It's a multi track conference that, according to the PAS site, aims to "bring together leaders from the areas of research, medicine, treatment, advocacy, education, and human services to discuss the needs of those with Profound Autism across disciplines and throughout the lifespan." Even though the Profound Autism Summit features talks from notable Behavior Analysts like Drs. Greg Hanley, Shanna Bahry, Peter Gerhardt, Jessica Slaton and others, it's not just an ABA conference. There will be speakers and panelists representing advocacy groups, emergency services personnel, service providers, and more (check out the entire speakers roster here).  The PAS is right around the corner and is almost sold out, so if you're on the fence and are looking for some motivation, here it is (register your spot here!). If you can't make it, consider signing up for their mailing list, as I believe they'll be making the talks available  asynchronously some time down the road.  Did you know that if you use Apple Podcasts as your player, you can get transcripts to this show? We are delighted to bring back Dr. Alycia Halladay, Chief Science Officer of the Autism Science Foundation, who we first featured way back in Episode 4. Alycia and host Jill Escher debate some of the more recent developments in autism research, including studies on genetics, prevalence, early intervention, and ... TikTok! It's a long episode and a bit "in the weeds" on some pretty technical topics but we hope you find it thought-provoking. First they discuss a new paper that probes the role of "common genetic variants" in autism risk, and Jill expresses her dissatisfaction with the assumptions underlying the study. Prevalence is rising, and Alycia says it's not just one thing driving the increase. Early interventions show some promise in improving functioning in young autistic children, but not in overcoming autism. And, surprise (not), Tik Tok is full of autism misinformation....Links: The contributions of rare inherited and polygenic risk to ASD in multiplex families https://www.pnas.org/doi/abs/10.1073/pnas.2215632120 The earlier the better: An RCT of treatment timing effects for toddlers on the autism spectrum https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/13623613231159153 Building Community and Identity Online: A Content Analysis of Highly Viewed #Autism TikTok Videos https://www.liebertpub.com/doi/abs/10.1089/aut.2023.0019 ASF Podcast - Podcast: Tik-Tok for autism information? My interests range from exploring nature in all its forms–from hiking mountains or camping under the stars, to road trips where you can see more than just your own surroundings; music brings me joy as well! Hanging out at home with my daughters making art together while cooking food on open fire pits (summertime!) Or simply spending time chatting over coffee. The joy of motherhood is something that I am so grateful for. It's an endless source of inspiration and motivation to keep me going every day, no matter how hard life gets. I LOVE helping people accomplish the lifelong dream of getting published. Creating a book is an amazing experience. It's so much fun to see ideas come alive through the written word! One of my favorite parts about this process? Strategizing how we're going to get these books into more hands absolutely lights me up–especially when they contain exciting new stories from incredible entrepreneurs who are making waves in their respective industries. Alycia Halladay, PhD, is Chief Science Officer of Autism Science Foundation and has years of experience working to promote and fund autism research. NCSA President Jill Escher talks with her about progress -- and lack thereof -- in autism research over the past 30 years. Highlights: • 30 years ago scientists assumed they could find singular causes and treatments for autism, but the reality turned out to be far more complicated. Autism is many different disorders with different underlying causes and biology. • Though many areas of autism research have seen slow progress, we've seen improvements in early identification, early intervention, and genetics. • To improve research it's very important to create meaningful subgroups of autism where there is sufficient homogeneity to assess etiologies (causes), biological phenomena and treatment response. • The recent Lancet Commission report emphasized practical needs of individuals and families, over basic biology, and introduced "profound autism" as a way to carve out a subgroup of patients needing near-continuous care. • There is no question that autism prevalence is growing, and it's not just about better recognition. • Gene-environment interaction is a key question for autism research. • For families with children with a mutation, such as that in Phelan McDermid Syndrome, genetic findings can be life-changing. • We need to invest in tools that enable the detection of environmental influences on autism risk. • We have not made progress when it comes to treatment of core symptoms of autism; some progress for co-morbid conditions such as anxiety and sleeplessness. • To enable more research on cannabis products we need to move cannabis from DEA Schedule 1 to Schedule 2.
