From 'Baseball Isn't Boring' (subscribe here): Jonathan Papelbon is heading into the Red Sox Hall of Fame next week, which on its own would be a great reason to have the friend of Baseball Isn't Boring on the podcast once again. But there is so much more. Rob Bradford teams up with Pap once again, this time to reflect on his path to Red Sox immortality, along with some pointed commentary on how relievers are being used. The former closer has taken issue with some things that are being done and said when it comes to today's bullpens and how they are being managed. As always, Papelbon is a must-listen. Anthony Rendon set the baseball world on fire this weekend when he made comments about wanting less games during the MLB season. Jared discusses his viral tweet on the matter, we break down Papelbon's response, and we get Max's thoughts on another media shitstorm for the Angels. Josh Hader signed the most lucrative deal for a relief pitcher in baseball history so we call up Tex to get his thoughts on the ridiculously stacked Astros bullpen. We round out the episode with 1972 MVP Hindsight and the Athletics Mt. Rushmore. Thanks for listening and tune in next week for Joey's Storytime segment! Co-hosts Chris Cotillo and Sean McAdam are joined by former Red Sox closer (and NESN analyst) Jonathan Papelbon, who explains why he was thrust into duty by the team to host the welcome event at the Winter Weekend fan fest in Springfield. The Dodgers claim Yamamoto and Patti claims Dodgers pitching for FBBL, just that fast. Just when we thought Verdugo could not sink any lower, he goes after his former manager for holding him accountable for his actions, and forces us to agree, a little, with Papelbon. This week's boyfriends represent LAA and NYM. Pottymouth selects LAA catcher Logan O'Hoppe, not just because it is fun to say his name, but it helps. Patti goes for SS Zach Neto, a little for the leg kick and a lot for his mom. Over at the Mets, it's another Zack - this time “great teammate” Zack Short , while Patti chooses Brett Baty and his “big Texas Boy power.” The Cubs promote Megan Jones to VP of Baseball Strategy, their first woman VP in baseball ops. Wander Franco rakes in a bonus while under investigation, and the Rules committee, stacked with owners, pushes through some changes that no players voted for. It's a done deal, the Os stay at OPACY for another 30 years. Patti has a swaggy little Christmas while Pottymouth waves to Fenway and hangs with Dad.We say “shipping Shohei and Santa,” “Circumventing circumvention, “ and “back to back Zach to Zack.' From 'Baseball Isn't Boring' (subscribe here): Once again, Jonathan Papelbon and Bradfo are out to prove that not only is baseball not boring, but betting on baseball isn't boring. It's why the two teamed up one again, this time to go through which teams are the best bets in each division. Along the way they formulate the 'Pitch of Destiny', where Papelbon sets the over/under on throwing a fastball at 89.9 mph. We also get to the bottom of exactly what percentage of players are in the best shapes of their lives. It seemed like a perfect time to catch up with the Phillies' all-time saves leader. Why? Because Jonathan Papelbon certainly has a unique view of playing baseball in Philadelphia, while also being responsible for one of the most unforgettable moments in Bryce Harper's career - when the two tussled in the dugout as members of the Nationals. Papelbon is never shy about letting his true feelings be heard, which is why this is a must-listen. Before sitting down with Pap, Bradfo does also announce a Baseball Isn't Boring contest, while ranting a bit about MLB's umpire situation. (How does an ump execute a perfect game behind home plate and then never call balls and strikes the rest of the series?) It's all a great way to kick off the final week of the 2022 MLB season. Hour 1 of the show. Papelbon rips the Phillies. The Flyers are awful.
Ruben Amaro Jr. joins the team. What is the number 1 need for the Phillies at the deadline? Is Juan Soto actually a possibility? Does he take exception to Papelbon's comments? Will Angelo make an ass out of himself Sunday?
Philadelphia isn't for everybody, as friend of the show Tra Thomas likes to say. 2 of the people Philadelphia was not for, are Nnamdi Asomugha and Jonathan Papelbon. We had to talk to former Eagles tight end Clay Harbor with the stories that have come out since Shady McCoy was on the "I Am Athlete" pod. Jonathan Papelbon is determined to drag the city of Philadelphia even though he was paid handsomely to become the teams leader in saves. to each their own, but Papelbon seems content to live in the past with his takes on the city, and the city's MVP Bryce Harper
BlackJack Fletcher and Jonathan Papelbon debut their new podcast from BTV, BlackJack and Pap! Papelbon talks about innings limits and pitch counts, soft players, as well as some rather personal and hilarious experiences with the Red Sox/Yankees rivalry. The guys also give their betting picks for the weekend. Don't miss it!

Today, MAK and Alex come together for another edition of VERSUS! Relievers have been done before, but four more step up for judging. What makes a great reliever? Electric velocity? Dominant stuff? Getting saves? Regardless of what matters more, each reliever is reviewed to see who is the best of the best. Tune in for this and more on today's edition of Cheap Seats Chatter brought to you by Overtime Heroics.

We jump in on the Cubs with the seasons Kris Bryant and Kyle Hendricks, how do they hold up? Some of the things Bryant has done have people looking at the Hall of Fame resume, do we really think he can be that great? Is he the National League MVP this year? After the stellar season Jake Arrieta had last season, Hendricks may win the Cy Young this season. Do you Hendricks start in one of the home games of a playoff series? Game 2? Could the Cubs look to add another bullpen arm before August ends? Jonathan Papelbon? With August coming to a close we get Pops' new World Series predictions? A Chicago kiss of death? What do we expect for Clayton Kershaw coming back? And he's on Blair's team so what does that mean for Fantasy Baseball playoffs? College football is finally back! Some awesome games starting Saturday including; Alabama, LSU, Clemson, Houston, Oklahoma, Notre Dame and more to kick off the opening weekend. Which team do you want to see most? What game do you think will be the best? Worst? Upset special? Kirk Herbstreit was quoted as saying 'The preseason rankings are based on last season and who was returning and no one has played yet.' Uh duuhhhhh Herbstreit! The other thing he said was that he didn't think the Playoff Committee wouldn't vote in anyone besides conference championships. We don't think that's case, but you'd have to have several loses for your conference championship. This could be the year with the PAC10 looking down and Oklahoma having Houston and Ohio State on the non-conference schedule and the rest of the Big12 up in the air. And with this great opening week there are plenty of non-conference games that could throw the BCS Invitational into complete chaos. Which team could lose this opening week and still bounce back to get into the playoffs? The early Heisman top 4 is Baker Mayfield, DeShaun Watson, Leonard Fournette and Christian McCaffery, who's your early favorite? We finally had our Keeper Draft so it's more Fantasy Football talk. Several keepers changed hands which really seemed to balance out the league making it possibly our most competitive league ever. We go through several of the top end rosters to make our picks for early playoff favorites. We introduce a new segment 'I Got Beef' because Pops has a problem with everyone jumping on Colin Kaepernick for sitting during the National Anthem.
We are back stronger than ever with an all new episode as there has been a lot going on since the last time we had a show! We break down thelast few weeks as the Red Sox are now back battling for the AL East with the Toronto Blue Jays! This week also include Jared agreeing with something John Farrell said (yeah that's right!), the team talking about Steven Wright's absence and of course Jess praising Clay Buchholz. We round out the new episode talking MLB Headlines (AROD, Papelbon and Giancarlo Stanton) and making our predictions for the week!!
In this episode Paul and Leslie reveal their long awaited sideline reporter secret weapon, talk about Strasburg's injury and what it means for the starting staff, discuss Papelbon's exit and where the bullpen stands, review the comeback trails of Harper and Zimmerman, look into a clubhouse dispute in Oakland, and try to figure out what the hell in going on in Ryan Locate's head. They fail.
Pedro Strop should be back for the playoffs, so how big a deal is his injury? Would his injury have the Cubs give Papelbon a chance to come aboard and see some familiar faces? Isaac's head might explode if they do. And how about Kyle Hendricks? Should he trump Jon Lester in a game two start in the playoffs? And more follow up on the Tommy La Stella story.Joel is back with 60 Seconds, and he takes us back to Scott Sanderson and his...good looks? The question of the week is all about giving Jason Heyward a "Starlin Castro benching" to try to ignite his bat.The at bat of the week is David Ross...but it's not a sac fly this time around.
Matthew and Toby report live from the MLB trade deadline. So much news gets broken and sadly, most of it can't be put back together. There's a lot to discuss: Matthew visits AT&T Park, witnesses history, and celebrates the end of the Papelbon era for Nationals closers. Toby discusses the rollercoaster ride that was the Indians last few days of trade season. There's all that AND the boys welcome Jeff Gabriel, a Dodgers fan and a guy who gets mentioned a lot on Battery Mates, for this episode's half-hearted attempt at empathy.
Nationals Park will be getting a new name, Michael A. Taylor can't stop hitting, and MASN is still... being MASN. Lots of topics to discuss, and lots of listener questions to debate, including the best Easter candy.
Paul and Joe welcome James Wagner of the Washington Post on to the pod for an update on Spring Training straight from Viera. They talk about the makeup of the new bullpen plus Papelbon's presence in the clubhouse (5:50) and touch on Bronson Arroyo and starting rotation (14:00). They discuss the position battles in the infield and outfield (18:00) and the depth of the roster (25:00) closing with James' takeaways for the 2016 season (30:00).
The guys debate the pros and cons of the Ben Revere for Drew Storen trade with differing viewpoints and conclusions. They follow that up with some hot takes on Jonathan Papelbon's future with the club
It's so nice to be back! Let's go Mets! We talk a little Mets, talk a little Papelbon, and most importantly we talk with the very free spirited, energetic, and colorful ultra runner, Catra Corbett! What a fun interview! Catra tells her stories of running 100 miles races, drug addiction, and competing in races with her awesome Dachshund, Truman. Little did Jonathan Papelbon know when he began this season that he would end it as a Washington National, not to mention that he would choke their season away. Even less foreseeable is that the choke would be a literal one, with Papelbon’s hand somehow ending up around the neck of golden boy Bryce Harper. Bram Weinstein & Marc Sterne muse on the unfortunate trend of the Nats adopting the inept characteristics of their crosstown football cousins. Bram records from his basement in Connecticut, and speaks candidly about the sad state of DC sports and its role in his decision to “turn the page” on a career move back to his hometown…for now. Then, the definitive debate on Pete Rose with SI’s Kostya Kennedy, author of “Pete Rose: An American Dilemma” in which we discuss whether or not Charlie Hustle finally deserves a shot at a Cooperstown ballot. Spoiler alert: He does. And finally… deviant, unsavory things we find compelling on the internet. Ben and Sam banter about the changing structure of front offices, then discuss what former players are saying about the brawl between Jonathan Papelbon and Bryce Harper.
Max Scherzer did everyone in Washington, D.C. a favor with his bid for his second no-hitter of the season this afternoon, momentarily distracting us all from the dugout drama after the Bryce Harper vs Jonathan Papelbon brawl. Scherzer gave up the first hit in the eighth, but the Washington Nationals beat the Cincinnati Reds, 5-1, then it was back to talk about Papelbon's suspension and Harper's role in the fracas...
Motor City Bengals Presents "Tiger Talk" with hosts Matt Pelc and Dave Holcomb. This is the final episode of MCB's "Tiger Talk" during the 2015 regular season. On this last show, Holcomb and Pelc share their thoughts on Brad Ausmus sticking around for the 2016 season. As one can imagine, the move didn't make either host very happy. In the second segment, "Tiger Talk" welcomes back MCB Staff Writer Steve Mitzel. The hosts ask Mitzel's reaction to the news about Ausmus and also discuss the latest debacle going on in Washington. On Sunday, relief pitcher Jonathan Papelbon and right fielder Bryce Harper got into a little boxing bout. Well, actually Papelbon grabbed Harper by the neck. It was so much more interesting than the shoving match Jose Iglesias and James McCann were in a month or so ago. Finally, to wrap up the first season of "Tiger Talk", Holcomb and Pelc share their postseason predictions. According to our hosts, the Kansas City Royals and Toronto Blue Jays are clearly the top two teams in the American League, but neither one can figure out the crowded National League Central.
Join Brent and James as we chatter about baseball. This week is AL Central roundup! The Angry Angry Royals, the resurgent Twins, the curious Cleveland "C's", the disappointing White Sox, and the unlucky Tigers. Cespedes vs Harper!!! We talk about the Papelbon the devil himself and the Reading Fightin' Phils. We talk about the NF of L and the team of our dreams (nightmares?), the Philadelphia Eagles, who didn't drink their smoothies before playing the Falcons. We do mid-season reviews of the MLB 2015 Season. Brenton makes an incorrect prediction about Cole Hamels. James correctly predicts how Papelbon's deal would go down. We talk All-Star Break summer heat, Soccer and the World Cup's horrible labor practices and economics, Bernie Sanders, Donald Trump. Brent goes to see Reggae Sublime and is planning a big baseball roadtrip from Detroit to Memphis to a tiny house in Omaha to Kansas City. James has a block party in South Philly. Ben and Sam banter about history, etymology, lexicography, and Nolan Arenado, then discuss the Ben Zobrist, Jonathan Papelbon, and Mat Latos trades.
The Washington Nationals dropped the series opener with the Miami Marlins in Miami. Fish starter Jose Fernandez improved to (15-0) in 23 career starts in Miami (an MLB record). The Nats acquired Phillies' closer Jonathan Papelbon before tonight's game... We'll talk about it all.

Inside this edition of 201CWithout a Curse,201D Alex reins in the New Year by discussing the latest news surrounding the Red Sox. Numerous outlets are reporting the Red Sox are not going to bid on star Japanese pitcher Masahiro Tanaka2019s services. Though it would2019ve been surprising if the Red Sox signed Tanaka, it2019s relatively surprising that the Red Sox are seemingly out of the sweepstakes this early. The Red Sox, as an organization, almost always negotiate with every major free agent. Except, evidently, Tanaka. Stephen Drew remains unsigned, as many teams are reluctant to part with the first round draft pick it would take to sign him. Alex says draft picks have become overvalued in baseball, as it2019s not a guarantee that a first round pick will be as good of a major league player as Drew is. The Red Sox have one of the best farm systems in baseball, as evidenced by John Sickel2019s prospect ratings last season. They2019ve signed numerous free agents, and surrendered several draft picks over the years. The Red Sox are proof that it2019s possible to build an elite farm system even while surrendering picks. Former Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon participated in a radio interview with WEEI last week, in which he said chemistry was the main reason the Red Sox won last season. Alex says Papelbon is one of many people who continually sell last year2019s team short. They won because of talent, not an intangible factor like team chemistry or character. In the 201CAround the League201D segment, Alex analyzes how the Phillies2019 new 25-year, $2.5 billion television contract will effect their spending and the competitive balance of baseball. Though Hall of Fame voting results haven2019t been released yet, many sportswriters have published their ballots. It2019s clear that a significant percentage of voters opted to vote for Jack Morris and not Mike Mussina. There2019s little argument for selecting Morris over Mussina, especially when one looks at the numbers. Email Alex at areimer@bu.edu, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1.

In Episode 19, Jon & Chris review controversial comments from Papelbon and Rollins, the Phillies 8-game losing streak, what to do at the trade deadline, Jeremy Maclin's torn ACL, and what it takes to be loved by Philadelphia fans.
Inside this edition of "Without a Curse," Alex gets you ready for what promises to be the most entertaining week of the season to date. It all begins tonight, as the Rays and Red Sox will make-up their game from last Thursday, which was rained out. The two teams had some "tweet beef" over the weekend, which only adds to the anticipation to tonight's game. On the negative side, the Red Sox draw David Price for the second time in less than a week. Tough break. Price had his way with the Red Sox offense last week, as did his teammate Matt Moore and Baltimore's Chris Tillman. Alex examines whether last week's offensive skid was a fluke, or the sign of greater problems. Jose Iglesias' offensive struggles in July are most certainly not a fluke, however. Alex says it's time to remove Iglesias from 3B, and give Will Middlebrooks another chance at the job. If Middlebrooks can't do it, then top prospect Xander Bogaerts should receive an opportunity. Anybody but Iglesias. The Red Sox remain hesitant to trade Bogaerts or other top prospects at the trade deadline on Wednesday, which is why Alex believes they will stand out. Prices are high, and there are no players on the market who are worth deviating from the long-term plan for. Plus, players will still be available in August. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex looks at the AL East standings, and talks about the Yankees' walk-off win on Sunday. Derek Jeter homered in his first at-bat back from injury, and Alfonso Soriano delivered with a home run and the game winning single. Alex talks about how the Soriano trade reeks of desperation, and also tells Brian Cashman, who said over the weekend that ownership forced him to make the trade, to stop whining. As GM, Cashman should do a better job of fighting against ownership/ Alex Rodriguez may plan to fight MLB this week, as reports indicate A-Rod could get suspended through 2014. Clearly, the Yankees are hoping this suspension occurs before August 1st, which is A-Rod' supposed new return date. The Phillies, though not as much of a mess as the Yankees, are in some trouble of their own. They've lost eight straight games, and Jonathan Papelbon has called for full-scale changes. You know things are bad when even Papelbon can recognize the dire state the organization is in. The Marlins are seemingly perpetually in a dire state, and may have hit a new low this weekend when former hitting coach Tino Martinez resigned because he was abusive to players. But that's not even the worst part ... owner Jeffrey Loria originally blocked Martinez' resignation. Okay then. Email Alex at areimer@bu.edu, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1.
Papelbon, the best NBA starting five of the last 30 years, and James Gandolfini.
In Episode 16, Jon & Chris discuss Papelbon's comments, blown saves, Game 7 of the NBA Finals, and which Phillies player you'd want to have a beer with.
In this edition of "Without a Curse," Alex analyzes the past three games against Red Sox' "natural interleague rival," the Phillies, and looks ahead to a meaningful weekend series against the Yankees. The Phillies are teetering on the edge of falling out of playoff contention, and because of that, there is ample speculation that both of Cliff Lee and Jonathan Papelbon may be available at the trade deadline. Alex says it would be beyond ridiculous for the Red Sox to pursue Papelbon, and it would be a mistake for them to pursue Lee as well. As the Red Sox have learned, there are no shortcuts to building a World Series contender. Trading significant prospects for Lee would show that the Red Sox haven't learned their lessons from the past three years. One of novelties with Lee is that he works fast, as his average length of game is well below three hours. For comparison sake, the average Red Sox game is well above three hours in length. Alex talks about how much of a factor the increasing length of baseball games is having on the sport's popularity, and why MLB has not been proactive about this issue. It was reported yesterday that Dustin Pedroia has been playing the entire season with a torn UCL in his thumb, which he suffered sliding headfirst into 1st base on opening day. Should we admire Pedroia for playing as well as he has through this injury, or criticize him for playing carelessly and sliding headfirst into 1st base? The Red Sox and Yankees will match-up at Yankee Stadium this weekend in a battle for 1st place, and the Red Sox may have to do it without Clay Buchholz. With this medical staff's recent history, there is the unfortunate probability that there could be more to the Buchholz collarbone injury than what the team originally said. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex recaps the AL East standings as the calendar turns to June, and rails against those who think the Yankees will be worse when their good players return from injury. Yes, some feel they're better with Lyle Overbay at 1st base instead of Mark Teixeira. Alex also talks about how the Cardinals continue to do everything, how the Pirates have done everything right thus far this season and how you're not doing it right if you're not appreciating seasons Miguel Cabrera and Mike Trout are putting up as an encore to their MVP battle last year. Email Alex at areimer@bu.edu, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1.
Hopefully everyone had a nice Thanksgiving...nothing to reign in the "post holiday work week" like some quality baseball talk. There hasn't been a whole lot of significant player movement thus far, but now that the new CBA is passed and with the Winter Meetings beginning next week "business should pick up." It's difficult to conduct business, however, without a manager. The Red Sox managerial search continues into another week, which leads Alex to speculate that not all members of the Front Office are supportive of Bobby Valentine. Reports are circulating that Ben Cherington is in-favor of hiring Gene Lamont instead of Valentine. If that is the case, it speaks to the continued disorganization within the Red Sox Front Office and that Cherington may not really be the "right guy" for the GM position (if in fact now he's had two disagreements with ownership regarding the top managerial candidate). In the "Around the League" segment, Alex takes a look at Joe Nathan signing with the Rangers and how that affects the Red Sox's search to replace Papelbon. Alex also analyzes the new CBA and the positives and negatives of it. "The Alex Reimer Show" airs Saturday's from 2-4 PM EST on WGAM "The Game" (900 AM Nashua and 1250 AM Manchester) and www.wgamradio.com. Post on the message boards at www.thesportsstuff.com/boards. Alex begins the show by opining about the situation at Penn St. It's not a baseball story, but frankly, it's a story that transcends sports. It's something that must be discussed in any forum. Alex also spends a lot of time analyzing how the Red Sox will attempt to replace Jonathan Papelbon at closer. It is understood that a 4/50 or especially a 5/60 million dollar deal is outrageous for any closer, but what's the "plan B?" If the Red Sox spend close to 50 million dollars trying to replace Papelbon, a fair criticism is, "why didn't you just sign the real thing in the first place?" Also, how will Papelbon's absence impact the reported plans to try out Daniel Bard as a starter during the spring? The managerial search should be wrapped up by Thanksgiving, and right now Alex believes that Dale Sveum is the front-runner. Alex also adds insight into why a guy like Gene Lamont, who isn't going to be manager, was interviewed. The GM Meetings will take place this week and Alex talks about what course of action the Sox will take with David Ortiz as well as how they'll attempt to fill the back-end of the rotation. In the "Around the League" segment, the puzzling decision for the Cardinals to name Mike Matheny as manager, the Marlins' high interest in Jose Reyes, Cuban defector Yoenis Cespedes, and much more is touched upon. "The Alex Reimer Show" was preempted this past Saturday (11/12) and will be preempted this Saturday as well (11/19) due to high school football airing on WGAM "The Game" and www.wgamradio.com. "The Alex Reimer Show" will return on Saturday 11/26 from 2-4 PM EST! Post on the message boards at www.thesportsstuff.com/boards. There is a lot of offseason conversation going on there...so why not get involved? Email Alex at Alexredsox076@aol.com and follow him on twitter @AlexReimer1.
Alex talks about the frustrating past few games for the Red Sox, where they lost in which they led on Thursday and Friday. Those are the games that you cannot lose if you're looking to make a playoff rush and gain significant ground. The Red Sox have to go on a run and time is running out. Josh Beckett came up small once again on Friday and Jonathan Papelbon blew the save on Thursday. Papelbon isn't elite anymore and Beckett is not a top of the rotation pitcher at this point. Alex also looks at the thin Red Sox bullpen and the concerns over the usage of Daniel Bard. Jacoby Ellsbury is back on the DL, and Alex says that this season will haunt Ellsbury for the entire offseason. The "post of the day" (www.thesportsstuff.com) is handed out, and in the "Around the League" segment, Alex goes over the AL standings, the top division races in baseball, and has a long awaited rant on the putrid New York Mets.
Alex talks about the trade deadline, and gives his take on what the Red Sox did (and didn't) do. Alex likes the move to call-up Ryan Kalish, but does not like the fact that the Red Sox didn't improve the bullpen by trading for a veteran reliever. Alex also recaps the 3 game series against the Tigers, saying that the win on Saturday was by far the biggest win of the season, and made Sunday's walk-off win possible. Alex says that Papelbon's inconsistency is yet another reason as to why the Red Sox need another veteran reliever. Because folks, they're still very much in this race. The "post of the day" (www.thesportsstuff.com/boards) is handed out, and in the "Around the League" segment, Alex goes over the AL standings and give his trade deadline "winners" and "losers."

Alex says that two things came out of this ALDS. First of, it was apparent that the Angels were the better team. This was not a fluke, John Lackey and Jered Weaver were better than Jon Lester and Josh Beckett, the Angels' deep lineup proved to be deeper than Boston's, and the Angels' bullpen was better too in the sample that they gave. Speaking of the bullpen, it is apparent that Jonathan Papelbon is at the point in his career that he needs to make an adjustment. Papelbon no longer features a breaking ball, and he cannot survive on one pitch. Because when he misses location with his fastball, he's toast, as he was on Sunday. Alex also adds more recap to the ALDS, and hands out the "post of the day" as well as playing a call on the TSS call-in line. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex talks about some similarities between the Red Sox/Angels series and the Dodgers/Cardinals series, how good this Yankees team is, and bad playoff umpiring. For the rest of October, "Without a Curse" will continue to be published every Monday and Thursday.
