A new documentary is now-streaming giving an inside look at the world of Minnesota Roller Derby. It's called “Minnesota Mean.”The documentary follows six women on the Minnesota Roller Derby team over the course of a season. It won Best of Fest at the Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival last year. MPR News host Cathy Wurzer talked with the film's director, producer and editor, Dawn Mikkelson.
Ahead of a busy holiday weekend, more than 300 Minneapolis parks workers are preparing to walk off the job. We heard from union leaders about their week-long strike and what's been happening at the bargaining table. It may rain on your Fourth of July parade and Mother Nature will have fireworks of her own. We got a detailed forecast for the holiday from MPR News chief meteorologist Paul Huttner. A new law in effect requires cosmetologists in Minnesota to learn how to cut and style textured hair. We talked to a cosmetology educator about the importance of expanding training. And a new documentary takes a deep dive into the world of Minnesota Roller Derby. We met the local filmmaker behind “Minnesota Mean.”
Episode 438Cash and Schramm are joined by Producer Director Dawn Mikkleson who documented a year with Minnesota Roller Derby and put out the film "Minnesota Mean".
Well that's over and done with. The weekend that was, or wasn't, or was. I'm confused. This past weekend, we went to downtown St. Paul to catch a monthly event that I had never been to but the Melanie had. Roller Derby!!!What is roller derby? Well, unless you actually go and see it, or you've seen the Elliot Page movie "Whip It" you probably know what it is. Other than that, it's kind of hard to explain without physically witnessing it. See, there's this group of girls right, preventing another group of girls from getting around the track. If one of the groups, called a jammer, escapes that blockage and gets around, she scores a bunch of points. If you're genuinely curious, the Minnesota Roller Derby has a website. But why the episode title? Well, because a certain restaurant in downtown St. Paul shall never be visited ever again, thanks to their inability to operate like a normal restaurant. Details within this episode. Sorry for the rant, but you'd have to have been there understand how frustrating these first world problems really were. Also, we love "The Loon Cafe"!This episode contains a "Doggies in the News" segment too, about a pup that was reunited with its homeless owner, and the shelter went above and beyond to help the owner too!Find us on the gram or on Facbeook!

Get to know macrame plant hanger maker extraordinaire Rachel Avenido (aka Ice of Minnesota Roller Derby) of Icy Knots on this latest episode of "Pop-Up Shopcast"!
In this latest episode of "Pop-up Shopcast," maker Caesarea Hendrix (aka Legs of Minnesota Roller Derby) tells us all about her handmade stationery and skin care! FYI: the video of this interview is available on this pod's youtube and Insta pages. Enjoy!
Today’s special guest is topical, timely as well as just plain awesome. Manila Ice of Minnesota Roller Derby and Team Philippines, is a U.S. Census enumerator, which means they visit far-flung areas in their home state and completes the census form with residents who have not been counted. In case you don’t know what the Census is, it’s a national count that takes place every 10 years of every child and adult who resides in the United States, regardless of immigration or economic status, or political affiliation. It is a count that is dictated by the U.S. Constitution and is in turn used to apportion how many seats your area gets in the House of Representatives, how much funding is disbursed. The population number of this Census will determine the Electoral College votes are apportioned to each state for 2024’s Presidential Election--so it’s super important. We’re nearing the deadline for responses to the United States Census. It was originally set for October 31 and then shortened a month by the executive branch of the federal government and set for September 30, but a federal judge last week restored the original deadline. In any case, if you haven’t done so, get it in as soon as you can. It takes 5 minutes. The link is below. Enjoy the convo with Ice, who knows their stuff. We also talked about identity and the mood and conversations that have taken place at MNRD since George Floyd’s murder in neighboring Minneapolis. For the fourth installment of the Twin Cities Design Scene podcast, I had the opportunity to speak with Caesarea Hendrix, who is a talented multidisciplinary artist working in a wide array of mediums ranging from drawing to printmaking, to painting and SO much more! Her line of XOX Handmade Gifts includes products such as stationary, journals, handkerchiefs, and hand-painted clothing that sends messages of radical self-love. When she is not working on one of her many projects, you can catch Caesarea on roller skates, competing with the Minnesota Roller Derby. She has an entire YouTube channel documenting the derby life!
Where else do you hear the terms Blockers, Jammers, Zebras, Tripping, J-Blocks, and Panties all in one sentence? Apparently only in Roller Derby!

HAPPY FALL! The S.S. Roller Derby is settin' sail a little early this month, because we're just THAT excited to share the new episode with you all. Plus! We found ourselves a proper recording studio, so things are sounding a lot better aboard this ship, if we do say so ourselves. Join us for an exciting romp through Zebra Land as we interview Uno Mas and Thac0, both longstanding members of Madison's own United Derby Officials Local 608 (UDO), as we chat about all things ref and officials and Why UDO Is So Great/how you too can build a stronger, awesomer officiating crew. Hammer and Allie also give you an EXCLUSIVE on the big names slated to appear/coach/captain at Summer Affair 2018 in Cleveland, Ohio (right around the 44:45 mark, if you're impatient and need to know RIGHT NOW). Will we see you there? We're also pleased as punch to bring you the first musical feature of the show, as we share a song by the Sex Wings - all Minnesota Roller Derby folk. You can listen to more of their music here. Many thanks to Bully Jean for submitting the song - and remember, if you have a musical project of any sort, are involved in derby, and would like us to feature you on a future episode, drop us a line at ssderbypodcast@gmail.com! Finally, we chat a bit about WFTDA Champs 2017 (we'll both be doing announcing work at the event), the amazing announcing crew working that weekend, and a few other odds n' ends. As always, we hope you enjoy! Comments? Questions? Suggestions? Hit us up on Facebook, Twitter, and/or by email at ssderbypodcast@gmail.com at any time. And give us some love (reviews!) over at iTunes while you're at it, if you feel so moved.
