It's the Talk of Troy. Voices and sounds from the campuses of Troy University. I'm De'Shaun Cottrell, Troy's College of Health Sciences has recently made several advancements, including a new research building and a new doctoral program. Producer Reana Wallace has more. LaGary Carter is proud of Troy University's latest innovation and education. Troy University will have the only the second chiropractic program in the country, particularly a public research university. Troy's newest research building, Jones Hall, was named for Billy Jones, a foundation board member who passed away in January. He was also president of a company overseeing 17 nursing homes across the state. Carter is happy that Troy continues to honor the legacy of Jones. Jones Hall epitomizes, if you will, the vision and generosity of Mr. Jones. You know, it stands as a hallmark towards his legacy, and it is certainly a benefit when it comes to recruiting students. And Carter says those studies will leave Troy with a diverse portfolio and wealth of experience. Getting a degree will open a lot of doors for them in the health care arena and even beyond. So they need to look at it as a as a long term investment strategy. Troy University students earned seven awards for this year's Southeastern Journalism Conference. The winners include Reana Wallace, whose voice you just heard in the last story. Producer AnnaBrooke Rainey has more. 200 students from more than 20 universities heard speeches, attended seminars, took part in onsite competitions, and they also won some awards. Matilda Ziegler, opinion writer for Troy's Tropolitan newspaper, won second place in the Media law competition alongside Kathryn Clark, said just going to the conference was meaningful Firstly, you get to connect with both your peers at Troy and your peers at other institutions. And then in addition to that, I think it's good to really be putting your best foot forward in these competitions. Caden Walker competed in the PR challenge with Nate Henderson. He also represented Troy Trojan Vision News and the TV anchoring competition. He walked away with awards in both categories. It was a really fun thing. Coming in second in that is really a feat to our willingness to represent our school well there and just to try to have fun with it. And it paid off very well. Jameson Speece represented Troy Public Radio. He received first place for best radio news reporter, a job he really enjoys. I think one of my favorite parts is getting to do the reporting on the fly. I love all of the different aspects of reporting and like the talking to people in the they're getting to sit down and try to come up with something cohesive. This month Dr. Kurt Olding shares with us the latest published research on compression fractures, Gabapentin (Neurontin), degenerative scoliosis, epidurals, non-contained discs and spondylolisthesis. Dr. Kurt Olding has been in practice for over 40 years, opening Minster Chiropractic Center in 1986 after graduating from National College of Chiropractic in Lombard, IL in 1984. Through the years Dr. Kurt has enjoyed treating all age groups, from infants to athletes and parents to grandparents. He took special interest in sports medicine during his early years in practice, completing 300 hours of continuing education through the Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician program. Dr. Kurt earned Cox® Technic certification in 2009. In 2012 he began co-instructing the technique, and since 2015 has been a full-time instructor alongside Dr. James Cox, Dr. Ralph Kruse, and Dr. George Joachim. Through his work with Cox® Technic, Dr. Kurt has had several exciting opportunities. In March of 2016, he taught Cox® Technic in Bern, Switzerland as part of the Swiss Chiropractic Academy's "technique series" program. Later that month, he presented research on Cox® Technic with his mentor Dr. James Cox at the annual Association of Chiropractic Colleges Research Agenda Conference. Dr. Kurt co-authored a paper published in the June 2016 edition of the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine titled Chiropractic Distraction Spinal Manipulation on Post-surgical Continued Low Back and Radicular Pain patients: A Retrospective Case Series. In 2015, Dr. Kurt became board certified as a Chiropractic Orthopedist, and a Fellow of the Academy of Chiropractic Orthopedists (FACO). He is also a board member of the Academy of Chiropractic Orthopedists, serving since early 2016. Dr. Kurt and his wife Jackie are Minster natives. They have three children: Sunni, Kregg, and Jack. Flat feet are not genetic! Flat feet correction and prevention are simpler than you think. You're born with flat feet and develop an arch when you're around 6 to 10 years old. Some people develop a fallen arch as they age because they don't exercise the muscles that strengthen the arches of the feet.The purpose of your foot's arch is to provide it with free energy. It acts as a preloaded spring when you walk, climb, or run. You can still walk if you've lost your arch, but other muscles will be recruited. The quads and PSOAS muscles will compensate for flat feet, and the hamstrings, glutes, and lower back will be underused and become weaker. Sprinting is the best exercise for flat feet, helping restore the foot arch naturally. Even if sprinting is difficult initially, you can improve within 6 to 8 weeks. Jogging is one of the worst exercises for flat feet! Strengthen the arches of the feet with these exercises and build up to sprinting:• A skipping• B skipping• High knees• Butt kicks When sprinting, sprint at 60% intensity, doing 2 to 3 sprints for 15 seconds each. To prevent flat feet in children, allow them to play in the grass or a safe environment without shoes to strengthen the arches of their feet. Look for shoes with thinner soles; barefoot shoes are best. Also, ensure there's enough space for the toes to move. This improves posture by strengthening the glutes and taking pressure off the lower back. Low vitamin D, K2, and magnesium early in life can contribute to flat feet.
