I first spoke with Dana Johnson nearly 4 years ago, and that conversation completely changed how I saw vision and learning. I call it my "ocular motor awakening"—when I truly understood that vision has three components, and only one of them is corrected by glasses. Dana is the co-creator of the Spellers Method and the founder of multiple centers dedicated to helping non-speaking individuals communicate and learn with purpose. As both an occupational therapist (OT) and a Spellers Method practitioner, she brings a unique approach to supporting individuals with autism, apraxia, dyspraxia, and sensory-motor differences. In this episode, we talk about the power of purposeful motor skills, breaking down barriers for non-speakers, and what real communication means. Key Takeaways:  Vision isn't just about eyesight—it's about how the brain processes what we see. Apraxia is a motor planning challenge, not a cognitive one. Communication is possible when we focus on purposeful motor skills. What does right support look like? Get in Touch:

In 1964, passage of The Wilderness Act promised Americans that there would be lands designated for preservation and protection in their natural condition. It was a promise from Congress that the American people of present and future generations would be able to enjoy the benefits of an enduring resource of wilderness.”   When President Johnson signed the act into law, he said that “If future generations are to remember us with gratitude rather than contempt, we must leave them a glimpse of the world as it was in the beginning, not just after we got through with it.”   Where do things stand with that promise? Has it lived up to its lofty goal? To seek an answer to that question, and to get a better understanding of management of wilderness areas, and potentially wilderness, in the country, we've invited George Nickas and Dana Johnson to join us.  George is executive director of Wilderness Watch, a national organization dedicated to defending the nation's National Wilderness Preservation System and keeping it wild, and Dana is the organization's policy director.

Hi Friends. Tim here with another feed drop for you. This time it's Beyond Awareness: Disability Awareness That Matters, hosted by Diana Pastora Carson. Some of you may remember we had Diana on Think Inclusive in February of 2022 to talk about her journey as an educator advocating for inclusive education and bringing her brother Joaquin home from living in an institution. https://pod.link/583456652/episode/22dbbb5c42a79ab97d8405b316584854Today, I want to share with you a recent episode Diana published with two siblings, Danny and Tara Whitty. Danny spells to communicate and Tara is his communication regulation partner. Danny uses his finger to point to letters on a letter board that Tara holds up for him. And Tara reads out the letters as he points. Danny also, at times, uses his own voice. If you aren't familiar with this kind of communication, I'll share some resources with you after Diana's interview. Enjoy the conversation with Diana, Danny, and Tara. Catch you on the other side. Delilah Beasley didn't have much education or money, but when she saw that African Americans were being ignored by history books, she knew she had to do something. Beasley ended up spending nearly a decade interviewing elders and digging through crumbling archives to compile “The Negro Trailblazers of California,” a book that rescued dozens of notable Black figures from historical oblivion. However, Beasley didn't just focus on the past. Her weekly Oakland Tribune column, “Activities among the Negroes,” documented the East Bay's Black community at a time when positive portrayals of people of color in the media were almost nonexistent. This episode explores Beasley's life as a historian and journalist through a conversation with the authors of “Trailblazer: Delilah Beasley's California,” a new work by Dana Johnson and Ana Cecilia Alvarez. We discuss Beasley's motivation, her impact, and why her work still remains so valuable. On Friday, August 12, 2022, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Inflation Reduction Act, sending the bill to President Joe Biden for his signature. There is a lot of nuance around the bill, but to be clear, “the largest piece of climate legislation” does not go far enough to protect Black and Indigenous communities. That said, we understand the need for climate legislation, because if you don't shape policy, policy will shape you. The Coolest Show Producer Tamara Toles O'Laughlin discusses the bill with the Roosevelt Institute's Director of Climate Policy Rhiana Gunn Wright, WE ACT Senior Director of Strategy and Federal Policy Dana Johnson, and Black Appalachian Coalition Founder Bishop Marcia Dinkins. In today's episode, I'm so excited to be chatting with Dana Johnson, one of my amazing ninjas who has been on my team for 2 years! Dana is a true southern belle, lover of tabletop games, and sunny afternoons spent in the mountains. Her biggest fear is speaking in front of crowds (she would rather be showing her support from the sidelines), and is a natural problem solver. She likes to stay 2 steps ahead of potential happiness stealers, and one of her favorite travel adventures was hiking through Ireland (she plans to return-someday!)   Dana clearly represents the “triple balancing act”; she's a single Mama of 3, has her own business, and still works a 9-5 job too. She's wanted to be an entrepreneur since she was a young girl (specifically in hospitality). After starting her own event planning business and going through some big life changes, she landed in the virtual assistant (VA) world. She doesn't believe you “have” to be married to one particular niche in order to be successful with your business, but surrounding yourself with people who are positive and have a growth mindset is vital.   Dana has learned to trust the process, and be proud of her own progress along the way-not just in business, but in all aspects of her life. I can't wait for you to learn from her as we dive into her business, her story, and more!   Let's connect more over on Instagram at @racheleverington and @theexecutiveninja  Connect with Dana on Facebook: ddvirtualmanagement Dana's website: ddvirtualmanagement.com
