“Probably the most exciting thing I've seen in gene therapy over the last ten years is we now have a lot of tools for selective delivery, which will hopefully make treatments more safe and a lot more successful,” says Dr. Jessica Duis, a geneticist and pediatrician focused on the management of individuals with complex, rare disorders. Dr. Duis, who has worked on several gene therapies that are now approved or progressing through the accelerated approval pathway, is currently VP of Clinical Development at GondolaBio, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on developing therapeutics for genetic diseases. As you'll learn in this Year of the Zebra episode with host Lindsey Smith, Dr. Duis is encouraged by other recent advances in genetic technology as well, and thinks momentum will grow as breakthrough treatments emerge. “I think we're hopefully going to continue to see companies that are working in rare disease be more successful and really drive how regulators think about making decisions in terms of bringing treatments to patients. I think we're at the tip of the iceberg in terms of the future of truly transformational therapies.” This wide ranging conversation also explores Dr. Duis' team approach to patient care, her work on clinical endpoints, the importance of patient communities, and her book series, Rare Siblings Stories.Mentioned in this episode:GondolaBioRareDiseaseDocElsevier Healthcare Hub on Rare DiseasesRare Sibling Stories If you like this podcast, please share it on your social channels. No matter how well you prepare, every NP exam includes a few questions that make you stop and think, “What in the world is this?” These are the infamous "zebra questions," the ones designed to test how you handle uncertainty rather than how much obscure content you've memorized. The goal isn't to know every rare diagnosis, but to stay calm, think critically, and move forward with confidence. In this episode, Kaitlyn and I break down how to approach these unexpected, seemingly impossible exam questions using logic and reasoning rather than panic. We walk through real examples, including cases like blue skin discoloration after well water exposure and cave explorers with fungal infections, showing how to use context clues, process of elimination, and strategic thinking to find your best answer, even when the condition is brand new to you. Send us a textOnes Ready sits down with Morgan Lerette —author of Guns, Girls, and Greed—to talk about life as a Blackwater mercenary during the chaos of Iraq and Afghanistan. From getting recruited as a broke Air Guard kid, to standing on flight lines wondering if forklifts win Bronze Stars, to suddenly pulling convoys through Route Irish with Navy SEALs and Rangers, Morgan lays it all out: the absurd, the grim, and the downright sketchy. We dive into the wild days of unarmored Peugeots with body armor for window panels, hooker stories from Jordan, and the not-so-fun reality of PMCs running missions with zero backup. Our guest on this week's episode is Doug Cantriel, the head of North American transportation for the Ford Motor Company's Customer Service Division. Accurately delivering more than 400,000 parts every night to 3,000-plus Ford automotive dealers is complex work. Charged with this daily task is the team led by Cantriel. They manage the delivery of parts from suppliers to packagers, distribution centers, and then finally to the dealers. Cantriel will be a keynote speaker at this year's EDGE conference in Washington DC that begins on October 5. Amid economic uncertainty and high prices, consumers are looking for a cost-conscious, seamless online shopping experience in 2025. That's according to data from Ryder System, Inc. The information comes from the company's 11th annual benchmark study on U.S. shopping behaviors, preferences and expectations, and it aims to help brands and retailers optimize their omnichannel sales and supply chain strategies. Ben Ames attended the Zebra conference this week in Nashville, where Zebra executives said the company is moving beyond that pure data collection function to a broader umbrella function of analyzing the data their devices collect and finding better efficiencies across the entire supply chain enterprise. In their game plan, they will provide not just asset visibility, but also a connection to frontline workers, and ultimately, intelligent automation. Schwarz und weiß im Wechsel, der Name eines überaus bekannten Huftieres und dann soll gar nicht das Zebra der Namensgeber des gleichnamigen Streifens sein?
A common aphorism in the medical community comes from Dr. Theodore Woodward who said in the 1940s, "When you hear hoofbeats behind you, think of horses, not zebras." It's a way of reminding medical practitioners that the most common explanation is usually correct. In other words, Occam's Razor is usually correct. But what happens when the most common explanation isn't correct? What happens when you turn around and find a zebra looking at you? In this month's episode, our team finds a pediatric patient who seems to have had a stroke. Stroke is very uncommon in children, but that doesn't mean it never happens. Listen in as our team starts with the basics, analyzes the feedback, and arrives at their conclusion. Interested in obtaining CE credit for this episode? Visit OnlineAscend.com to learn more. You are in for a dose of inspiration in this episode of Raise the Line as we introduce you to a rare disease patient who was a leading force in establishing the diagnosis for her own condition, who played a key role in launching the first phase three clinical trials for it, and who is now coordinating research into the disease and related disorders at one of the nation's top hospitals. Rebecca Salky, RN, was first afflicted at the age of four with MOGAD, an autoimmune disorder of the central nervous system that can cause paralysis, vision loss and seizures. In this fascinating conversation with host Lindsey Smith, Rebecca describes her long and challenging journey with MOGAD, her work at the Neuroimmunology Clinic and Research Lab at Massachusetts General Hospital, and the importance of finding a MOGAD community in her early twenties. “There's a sense of power and security when you have others on your side. You're not alone in this journey of the rare disease,” she explains. Be sure to stay tuned to learn about Rebecca's work in patient advocacy, her experience as a nurse, and the three things she thinks are missing in the care of rare disease patients as our Year of the Zebra series continues.Mentioned in this episode:The MOG ProjectNeuroimmunology Clinic & Research Lab at Mass General If you like this podcast, please share it on your social channels. The New Orleans rock band Zebra has always existed out of time. Despite having one of the fastest selling debuts in Atlantic Records' history, Zebra never really fit in with the glammed up ‘80s metal bands they were being lumped in with on the pages and airwaves of Hit Parader and MTV. But that apparent inability to fit in may be exactly what endeared them to hordes of avid listeners who would wear out their bare bones cassette of ZEBRA and eventually go to Kmart and stealthily rip open a vinyl copy of the record to steal the lyric sheet so he could figure out what Randy Jackson was singing. Okay. We may be talking about Scott here. ANYWAY — this week we're thrilled to welcome Mr. Jackson to the podcast to talk about the 50th anniversary of Zebra, recording with Jack Douglas, being a rock band in New Orleans, being a rock band in Long Island, befriending Twisted Sister, touring with Cheap Trick, seeing The Beatles live, being forced to talk about Bon Jovi, and the lyrical prowess of the Moody Blues. And more black beans.

There's a career skill no one taught you in school. It's not on your resume. It's rarely on a job description. But it's the difference between being heard and being trusted. Between managing and truly leading. Empathy. And here's the kicker… Most people think they have it. But very few understand what it actually is or how to build it. Today's lesson is one of my most personal. I'll walk you through the three types of empathy (yes, there are three), show you how to practice them, and share a story that changed how I live and love (this WILL bring a smile to your face). If you want to deepen your relationships, earn trust faster, and elevate your career, this one's for you. This week's a special one. I'm going back to one of the most important lessons I've ever taught. Self-awareness. Not the generic, “journal your feelings” kind. I'm talking about a powerful, real-world framework that shows you where your life is out of alignment. Most people define self-awareness as “knowing yourself.”But there are actually two types: Internal self-awareness: How well do you know who you are? External self-awareness: Do you understand how others perceive you? Both matter. A lot. And most people aren't nearly as accurate as they think. That misalignment causes stress. Bad decisions. Unfulfilling jobs. Relationships that drain instead of energize. In today's lesson, I walk you through the six pillars of self-awareness. It's THE practical way to measure whether your life, work, thoughts, goals, and habits are aligned with the person you say you want to be. This isn't theory. It's a diagnostic. And it's going to help you course-correct in a powerful way. If your inner and outer life feel even a little out of sync… this one's for you. This week on the show I talk with Louisiana Music Hall Of Fame inductee, singer/guitarist/songwriter and Zebra frontman - Randy Jackson An absolutely legendary figure on the American Rock scene, Randy and his band 'Zebra' shot to mainstream success in the early 1980's with hit songs like, 'Who's Behind The Door' and 'Tell Me What You Want' - and are still going strong. Randy talks to me about how the band had been grinding in Louisiana from around 1975, before they eventually made the bold decision to relocate out to Long Island, where over the course of the next few years they played alongside bands like Journey, ZZ Top and Aerosmith. We also discuss the use of A.I in modern music, eating habits while on tour and his stint touring with Jefferson Airplane. As only our second ever 'official Youtube - please make sure you check our video conversation out (and subscribe) here - https://www.youtube.com/@musicians-mentorFor more on Randy Jackson or Zebra please visit www.thedoor.com and also ensure that you follow the band and Randy across all socials. For more on Travis Marc or the Musicians Mentor, please visit - www.musicians-mentor.comFor our partnership with our friends over at Soundbrenner, please visit - https://www.soundbrenner.com/pages/affiliate-travis-marc

In today's lesson, I'm teaching one of the most underrated (yet powerful) skills for career and life success: how to train your focus like a muscle. And I'm not talking about downloading some shiny productivity app. I'm talking about something deeper and more effective…

Want to think like a high achiever? I've coached thousands of professionals and one pattern is unmistakable. High achievers think differently. It's not about having more time, money, or luck. It's about how they frame challenges, filter distractions, and focus their energy. That's what today's podcast is all about.
On February 20, 1974, while recovering from the effects of sodium pentothal administered for the extraction of an impacted wisdom tooth, Dick received a home delivery of Darvon from a young woman. When he opened the door, he was struck by the dark-haired girl's beauty, and was especially drawn to her golden necklace. He asked her about its curious fish-shaped design. As she was leaving, she replied: "This is a sign used by the early Christians." Dick called the symbol the "vesicle pisces". This name seems to have been based on his conflation of two related symbols, the Christian ichthys symbol (two intersecting arcs delineating a fish in profile), which the woman was wearing, and the vesica piscis.[39] Dick recounted that as the sun glinted off the gold pendant, the reflection caused the generation of a "pink beam" of light that mesmerized him. He came to believe the beam imparted wisdom and clairvoyance, and also believed it to be intelligent. On one occasion, he was startled by a separate recurrence of the pink beam, which imparted the information that his infant son was ill. The Dicks rushed the child to the hospital, where the illness was confirmed by professional diagnosis.[40][verification needed] After the woman's departure, Dick began experiencing strange hallucinations. Although initially attributing them to side effects from medication, he considered this explanation implausible after weeks of continued hallucination. He told Charles Platt: "I experienced an invasion of my mind by a transcendentally rational mind, as if I had been insane all my life and suddenly I had become sane."[41] Throughout February and March 1974, Dick experienced a series of hallucinations which he referred to as "2-3-74",[26][42] shorthand for February–March 1974. Aside from the "pink beam", he described the initial hallucinations as geometric patterns, and, occasionally, brief pictures of Jesus and ancient Rome. As the hallucinations increased in duration and frequency, Dick claimed he began to live two parallel lives—one as himself, "Philip K. Dick", and one as "Thomas",[43] a Christian persecuted by Romans in the first century AD. He referred to the "transcendentally rational mind" as "Zebra", "God" and "VALIS" (an acronym for Vast Active Living Intelligence System). He wrote about the experiences, first in the semi-autobiographical novel Radio Free Albemuth, then in VALIS, The Divine Invasion, The Transmigration of Timothy Archer and the unfinished The Owl in Daylight (the VALIS trilogy).[citation needed] In 1974, Dick wrote a letter to the FBI, accusing various people, including University of California, San Diego professor Fredric Jameson, of being foreign agents of Warsaw Pact powers.[44] He also wrote that Stanisław Lem was probably a false name used by a composite committee operating on orders of the Communist party to gain control over public opinion.[45] At one point, Dick felt he had been taken over by the spirit of the prophet Elijah. He believed that an episode in his novel Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said was a detailed retelling of a biblical story from the Book of Acts, which he had never read.[46] He documented and discussed his experiences and faith in a private journal he called his "exegesis", portions of which were later published as The Exegesis of Philip K. Dick. The last novel he wrote was The Transmigration of Timothy Archer; it was published shortly after his death in 1982.[47]https://amzn.to/3ITbWCTBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Jenn believes her children were victims of dirty products and a system that is designed to trick consumers. Her son Jack's diagnosis of a brain tumor made her even more vigilant at researching every single ingredient in the products her family was using. She realized that products are really not always as natural as they seem. She decided if she wanted something truly safe, and high performance she was going to have to create it herself. This is how ZEBRA was born. Jenn's faith and love of country is woven into ZEBRA, not only are the ingredients in the products “black and white,” but she lives by the idea of the constitution and the Bible being black and white as well. ZEBRA is a non-toxic, freedom loving brand who answers to no one but the Creator himself. Kevin and Mike dig deeper into the lives of the first three Doodler victims, and a clear pattern begins to emerge around the method and location of these deaths: brutal stabbings in remote hookup spots. Did SFPD see that pattern in the ‘70s? Or was it lost amid the crime wave sweeping across the city at the time? They look into the infamous Zebra killings of 1973 and ‘74.
