"When they go low, we go high" ist ein toller Ratschlag von Michelle Obama.

Multiple failures from the Environment Agency, a lack interest from police and a ‘woeful lack of successful convictions'. That's what a House of Lords committee has found in its inquiry into ‘waste crime'. The inquiry from the cross party Environment and Climate Change Committee, says more than 38 million tonnes of illegal waste is being dumped each year often by organised crime groups involved in drugs, firearms, money laundering and modern slavery, and posing a serious environmental risk. Beavers were hunted to extinction in the UK around 400 years ago. But since 2009 they have have been slowly reappearing in UK, re-introduced by wildlife and conservation charities. In Scotland, Forestry and Land Scotland and the charity Trees for Life, have just relocated seven beavers into the Glen Affric National Nature Reserve. All week we're looking at invasive species. Zebra mussels grow to about the size of a fingernail and love to attach themselves to surfaces below the waterline, where they can do significant damage to things such as our water networks. We hear how South West Water is trying to stop them spreading through the waterways in Cornwall.Presenter = Caz Graham Producer = Rebecca Rooney

Salad growers are warning that price increases for electricity will drive people out of the sector. Growers in the Lea Valley on the edge of London say they have large electricity connections for times of heavy use, but often use much less power. Since 2022 they've been charged based not only on what they use, but also on the size of the connection, and they say that from April next year those standing charges will effectively double. They say they should have government support to help meet the cost, like other sectors which are intensive users of energy.Carrots are the nation's favourite vegetable, regularly eaten by around three quarters of us and worth nearly £300 million a year in sales . They are in season in the UK nearly all year round thanks to specialised growing techniques, including overwintering them in fields. Right now farmers are working hard to get them covered up before the first frosts. We visit a farm in the Vale of York as a layer of straw is put over the crop to protect it. Zebra mussels, mink, floating pennywort and the Asian hornet - what they all have in common is that they are all here in the UK, but they shouldn't be. This week we are looking at invasive species. There are 2000 non native species in Great Britain, about 200 of them are classed as invasive and the Animal and Plant Health Agency, the government agency which works to tackle them, says14 new ones are identified every year.Presenter = Charlotte Smith Producer = Rebecca Rooney

“When I was in medical school, no one had even heard of mitochondrial disease. Today, every student who graduates here knows what it is and has seen a patient with it,” says Dr. Mary Kay Koenig, director of the Center for the Treatment of Pediatric Neurodegenerative Disease at UTHealth Houston McGovern Medical School. That remarkable change in awareness has been accompanied by advances in genetic sequencing, the development of clinical guidelines, and the emergence of potential treatments in some forms of mitochondrial disease. In fact, Dr. Koenig's multidisciplinary team at UTHealth's Mitochondrial Center of Excellence has been a key player in clinical trials that may yield the first FDA-approved treatments for it. As you'll learn in this Year of the Zebra conversation with host Michael Carrese, her work in neurodegenerative diseases also includes tuberous sclerosis, where advanced therapies have replaced the need for repeated surgeries, and Leigh Syndrome, which has seen improvements in diagnoses and supportive therapies leading to better quality of life for patients. Tune in as Dr. Koenig reflects on an era of progress in the space, the rewards of balancing research, teaching and patient care, and the need for more clinicians to center listening, humility and honesty in their approach to caring for rare disease patients and their families.Mentioned in this episode:Mitochondrial Center of ExcellenceCenter for the Treatment of Pediatric Neurodegenerative Disease If you like this podcast, please share it on your social channels. Send us a textA quiet invasion is reshaping Ontario's lakes, forests, and wetlands—and most of the spread is accidental. We break down the top invasive species threatening biodiversity and outdoor recreation, then share smart, simple steps every camper, paddler, angler, and hiker can take to stop the damage. From zebra mussels and round goby to emerald ash borer, Asian longhorned beetle, garlic mustard, buckthorn, purple loosestrife, and dog‑strangling vine, we explain how each species changes habitat, why it matters for fish nurseries and forest health, and what early warning signs to look for on the water and along the trail. You'll hear practical field tips you can use right away: clean, drain, and dry boats and gear; never move live bait between waterbodies; don't transport firewood; and learn to spot D‑shaped exit holes in ash or dense reed stands of invasive phragmites. We also talk reporting tools like EDDMapS Ontario, working with certified arborists, and joining local stewardship days to pull invasive plants and restore native groundcover. Along the way, we share personal stories of tree loss, park closures, and shoreline changes that show how fast an infestation can turn a favourite campsite or launch into a very different place. If you love paddling clear bays, fishing healthy lakes, and hiking under diverse canopies, this is your action plan. Let's protect our shared backyard with consistent habits and early reporting so conservation teams can act fast. Enjoyed the conversation and want more practical outdoor tips? “Probably the most exciting thing I've seen in gene therapy over the last ten years is we now have a lot of tools for selective delivery, which will hopefully make treatments more safe and a lot more successful,” says Dr. Jessica Duis, a geneticist and pediatrician focused on the management of individuals with complex, rare disorders. Dr. Duis, who has worked on several gene therapies that are now approved or progressing through the accelerated approval pathway, is currently VP of Clinical Development at GondolaBio, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on developing therapeutics for genetic diseases. As you'll learn in this Year of the Zebra episode with host Lindsey Smith, Dr. Duis is encouraged by other recent advances in genetic technology as well, and thinks momentum will grow as breakthrough treatments emerge. “I think we're hopefully going to continue to see companies that are working in rare disease be more successful and really drive how regulators think about making decisions in terms of bringing treatments to patients. I think we're at the tip of the iceberg in terms of the future of truly transformational therapies.” This wide ranging conversation also explores Dr. Duis' team approach to patient care, her work on clinical endpoints, the importance of patient communities, and her book series, Rare Siblings Stories.Mentioned in this episode:GondolaBioRareDiseaseDocElsevier Healthcare Hub on Rare DiseasesRare Sibling Stories If you like this podcast, please share it on your social channels. No matter how well you prepare, every NP exam includes a few questions that make you stop and think, “What in the world is this?” These are the infamous "zebra questions," the ones designed to test how you handle uncertainty rather than how much obscure content you've memorized. The goal isn't to know every rare diagnosis, but to stay calm, think critically, and move forward with confidence. In this episode, Kaitlyn and I break down how to approach these unexpected, seemingly impossible exam questions using logic and reasoning rather than panic. We walk through real examples, including cases like blue skin discoloration after well water exposure and cave explorers with fungal infections, showing how to use context clues, process of elimination, and strategic thinking to find your best answer, even when the condition is brand new to you. Our guest on this week's episode is Doug Cantriel, the head of North American transportation for the Ford Motor Company's Customer Service Division. Accurately delivering more than 400,000 parts every night to 3,000-plus Ford automotive dealers is complex work. Charged with this daily task is the team led by Cantriel. They manage the delivery of parts from suppliers to packagers, distribution centers, and then finally to the dealers. Cantriel will be a keynote speaker at this year's EDGE conference in Washington DC that begins on October 5. Amid economic uncertainty and high prices, consumers are looking for a cost-conscious, seamless online shopping experience in 2025. That's according to data from Ryder System, Inc. The information comes from the company's 11th annual benchmark study on U.S. shopping behaviors, preferences and expectations, and it aims to help brands and retailers optimize their omnichannel sales and supply chain strategies. Ben Ames attended the Zebra conference this week in Nashville, where Zebra executives said the company is moving beyond that pure data collection function to a broader umbrella function of analyzing the data their devices collect and finding better efficiencies across the entire supply chain enterprise. In their game plan, they will provide not just asset visibility, but also a connection to frontline workers, and ultimately, intelligent automation. A common aphorism in the medical community comes from Dr. Theodore Woodward who said in the 1940s, "When you hear hoofbeats behind you, think of horses, not zebras." It's a way of reminding medical practitioners that the most common explanation is usually correct. In other words, Occam's Razor is usually correct. But what happens when the most common explanation isn't correct? What happens when you turn around and find a zebra looking at you? In this month's episode, our team finds a pediatric patient who seems to have had a stroke. Stroke is very uncommon in children, but that doesn't mean it never happens. Listen in as our team starts with the basics, analyzes the feedback, and arrives at their conclusion. Interested in obtaining CE credit for this episode? Visit OnlineAscend.com to learn more. You are in for a dose of inspiration in this episode of Raise the Line as we introduce you to a rare disease patient who was a leading force in establishing the diagnosis for her own condition, who played a key role in launching the first phase three clinical trials for it, and who is now coordinating research into the disease and related disorders at one of the nation's top hospitals. Rebecca Salky, RN, was first afflicted at the age of four with MOGAD, an autoimmune disorder of the central nervous system that can cause paralysis, vision loss and seizures. In this fascinating conversation with host Lindsey Smith, Rebecca describes her long and challenging journey with MOGAD, her work at the Neuroimmunology Clinic and Research Lab at Massachusetts General Hospital, and the importance of finding a MOGAD community in her early twenties. “There's a sense of power and security when you have others on your side. You're not alone in this journey of the rare disease,” she explains. Be sure to stay tuned to learn about Rebecca's work in patient advocacy, her experience as a nurse, and the three things she thinks are missing in the care of rare disease patients as our Year of the Zebra series continues.Mentioned in this episode:The MOG ProjectNeuroimmunology Clinic & Research Lab at Mass General If you like this podcast, please share it on your social channels. The New Orleans rock band Zebra has always existed out of time. Despite having one of the fastest selling debuts in Atlantic Records' history, Zebra never really fit in with the glammed up ‘80s metal bands they were being lumped in with on the pages and airwaves of Hit Parader and MTV. But that apparent inability to fit in may be exactly what endeared them to hordes of avid listeners who would wear out their bare bones cassette of ZEBRA and eventually go to Kmart and stealthily rip open a vinyl copy of the record to steal the lyric sheet so he could figure out what Randy Jackson was singing. Okay. We may be talking about Scott here. ANYWAY — this week we're thrilled to welcome Mr. Jackson to the podcast to talk about the 50th anniversary of Zebra, recording with Jack Douglas, being a rock band in New Orleans, being a rock band in Long Island, befriending Twisted Sister, touring with Cheap Trick, seeing The Beatles live, being forced to talk about Bon Jovi, and the lyrical prowess of the Moody Blues. And more black beans.

There's a career skill no one taught you in school. It's not on your resume. It's rarely on a job description. But it's the difference between being heard and being trusted. Between managing and truly leading. Empathy. And here's the kicker… Most people think they have it. But very few understand what it actually is or how to build it. Kevin and Mike dig deeper into the lives of the first three Doodler victims, and a clear pattern begins to emerge around the method and location of these deaths: brutal stabbings in remote hookup spots. Did SFPD see that pattern in the ‘70s? Or was it lost amid the crime wave sweeping across the city at the time? They look into the infamous Zebra killings of 1973 and ‘74.
