He's an undead ranger and skinchanger with an elk and ravens… and a mission. He saves Sam & Gilly and leads them to the Black Gate at the Nightfort so they can bring Bran and friends to him on the other side… because he cannot pass. He leads them far to the north and on the way he kills turncloak rangers, makes cannibals of them all, and calls himself “your monster, Brandon Stark”. He helps them fight off wights at the cave mouth where the Last Greenseer resides, but does not follow… because he cannot pass. He's Coldhands - but who is Coldhands? We might not know his identity, but his very existence tells us a lot about the Old Gods, the Others and the Children. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Bran and friends make it to the Nightfort. The problem is, they've got no way past the Wall. In the night, a huge black monster emerges from a well. It turns out to be Sam, who has the means they need to cross the Wall. Coldhands will be waiting for them on the other side. Simon and Mackelly grab their mittens.Chapter Review:Bran Stark, the Reeds, and Hodor have finally reached the Wall. They've made it to the Nightfort, through instructions from Jojen's green dream. Unfortunately, the instructions didn't indicate how to get past the Wall. Meera scales the Wall and finds no route that way. The boys search the ruined castle and have similarly poor luck. They spend the night in the castle kitchen. One feature of the kitchen is a large well in the center. While all else sleeps, Bran hears labored footsteps coming from the well. He knows it's a terrible creature of legend, from Old Nan's tales. However, when Meera nets it, the creature turns out to be Sam Tarly. Gilly and baby are close behind.Eventually, Sam realizes who Bran is and tells Bran that Jon was his best friend but was lost in the Frostfangs. Bran says he just saw Jon on the southern side of the Wall with a wildling group. Bran then asks Sam to please not tell anyone that he's alive. Sam agrees and tells them that Coldhands is waiting for them on the other side of the Wall. Sam then leads them down into the well and through the Black Gate, which can only be opened by a brother of the Night's Watch.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Brandon Stark - Prince (now king?) of Winterfell. The magical energy of K2 joins forces with Matt and Scad for Episode 124 wherein we talk about Bran and the scooby doo gang's visit to the legendary Nightfort! Jojen told them to come to this specific castle on the Wall, but the way is sealed, and now they are stuck here with a billion things that go bump in the night...including a big one that seems to be climbing the well where they are sleeping... Don't sleep on K2 though! As always, she brings her friendly demeanor and positive energy to this episode and getting to know this master cake artist was the true highlight of the Episode. Give it a listen, then go find K2 on twitter, because she is a riot! We recently released our Films Get Fingered Episode on Patreon, so go check that out. We had a blast fingering Rogue One: A Star Wars Story with several Bloodriders. More content on the way there as well as another Meet the Khalasar Episode to follow in July! Jon Snow is still dead, his body steaming in the cold night air. But the discourse isn't! Lets talk! You can find us on twitter @davosfingers, and also on Facebook. You can also shoot us an email at wearedavosfingers@gmail.com or support us through Patreon at patreon.com/davosfingers.
In the second of three videos explaining how the mythology of Odin and Yggdrasil heavily influenced ASOIAF, we'll dive into Bran Stark's tendency to fall, fly, hatch eyeballs from his forehead, and of course, 'trip his little Stark nuts off.' We'll compare the Nightfort to Valhalla, and we'll visit Whitewalls from The Mystery Knight to discuss the wily Maynard Plumm, who is of course Bloodraven. As always, you van find the matching video on the lucifermeanslightbringer YouTube channel to enjoy the full visual experience.
The first of three videos explaining how the mythology of Odin, Norse god of shamanism and many other things, heavily influenced George R. R. Martin's ideas about magic, weirwoods, greenseers, skinchangers, and the North. Part 1 will cover Bloodraven and the greenseer relationship with the weirwood, p2 will cover Bran and his version of Bloodraven's Odin symbolism (plus action at the Nightfort and Whitewalls form the Mystery Knight), and p3 will cover Jon, skinchanging, and the animal-like fury of Odin's berserker warriors.
We are joined by special guest Joe Magician for our inaugural Halloween Livescream in which we discuss the Others and zombies, Qyburn and Robert Strong, the Nightfort, GRRM's influences and roots as a horror writer, and much more! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
You thought last week was long? Well we beat the record yet again! Yes, this is the longest Scraps and Scrolls ever, and for only FOUR chapters. But what a four chapter they are! After Davos gets his reading glasses on we get one of the very best three-chapter runs in all ASOIAF as the Triforce-Trio of Jon, Bran, and Daenerys all have major moments in some of my very favourite chapters in the series. Along with Dragonstone politics and kingly duties we get Castle Black going all Home Alone on the attacking wildlings, we get CREEPY in the Nightfort with Bran, some ghouls, and a talking gate, all before returning to Daenerys's grand conquest and her ever-improving leadership skills. This week it consists of a duel, an assassination attempt, and not one but TWO unmaskings. Phew. No wonder it's a long episode Today's chapters: -Davos V -Jon VII -Bran IV -Daenerys V What better way to get over Red Wedding gloom. Come, join me on the Isle for a bit of Patron news, where Davos beats out Tyrion and Ned as a Hand, a type of battle we've never seen before at the Wall, the possible futures of the Nightfort, and Daenerys going from strength to strength to strength, as well as Barristan proving that every single story you've heard about him is dead on. The Ringer's Mallory Rubin and Jason Concepcion discuss ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 3 Episode 10, "Mhysa," by analyzing its central theme: homecoming (8:10). They also consider the history of the Nightfort (32:40) before crowning a repeat episode champion in a season finale (42:00).
In Part 2 of the Weirwood Compendium, we will finally be ripping into the symbolism of one of the main characters in the story, Brandon Stark. As the primary recipient of the fire of the gods in ASOIAF, Bran finds himself right at the center of the tangled web of mythology that encompasses both greenseers and Lightbringer. In this episode, we will be visiting several towers of note which Bran is tied to, and we will try not to get struck by lightning as we climb up to the heavens with the bad little boy who was struck down by lighting. We'll also get a healthy dose of Samwell Tarly, as well as the Nightfort and the Night's King, and be on the lookout for a mysterious one-eyed stranger in a hooded cloak. Remember that we cover material at our reading pace. We won’t spoil stuff in future chapters or books until our special section, Davos After Dark. Join us at the end if you are into that sort of thing. Lastly, if you’d like to contact us, we’d love to hear from you.
