Mackelly and Simon look for the silver linings.Chapter Review:Tyrion Lannister and Penny, are sold into slavery outside the walls of Meereen to Yezzan zo Qaggaz a Yunkish noble, they fetch a good price with the promise of entertainment. Their immediate boss will be a functionary who goes by Nurse. He's the one they'll answer to. Tyrion convinces Nurse that Ser Jorah Mormont is part of the act, and he convinces Yezzan to complete the set. The knight is listless and inconsolable after learning that Daenerys Targaryen has married Hizdahr zo Loraq. Nurse has them watch a public punishment of slaves who tried to escape. It's revolting and convincing.Their first duty is to perform for Yezzan as he hosts the assembled warlords and nobility. It goes well and Tyrion curries more favor when he defeats Brown Ben Plum at cyvasse, winning considerable gold for his master at the expense of the sellsword. Nurse is pleased and says that Tyrion and Penny will perform in the grand fighting pits when they reopen. Send us a textTheon continues to wander Winterfell. A fact that is noted when men start being found murdered. His worthlessness proves to be a sufficiently strong alibi. He is once again propositioned by Abel's women. Simon and Mackelly consult their IP lawyers.Chapter Review:Theon Greyjoy continues to haunt Winterfell, and Winterfell returns the favor. The blizzard rages on, making the living conditions increasingly intolerable. Ropes are strung between the buildings to prevent people from getting lost. Men start turning up dead. The first couple are explained away as accidents, but the third is clearly murder. Furthermore, the newly constructed stable collapses. The great hall, already redolent of men and dogs, is now used to house the displaced horses. Another of Abel's women tries to befriend Theon, but he still senses a Ramsay trap and avoids her. He's dragged before Lord Roose Bolton, as he's one of the few people who wanders the whole castle, and therefore has the opportunity (and let's be honest, the motive) to sabotage the Bolton cause. His demeanor and physical decrepitude end any suspicion. A warhorn appears to herald Stannis' arrival and cause panic within the Walls. Theon, knowing that for him Stannis does not represent salvation, goes to pray in the godswood. There he is again haunted by his crimes, hearing his name and seeing Bran's face in the heart tree. Abel's women again accost him. Mackelly and Simon feel their pupils dilate.Chapter Review:Arya Stark's education continues apace in the House of Black and White. Without her sight she's developing her four other senses. In addition, she's learning languages, potions, and poisons. More painfully she's learning how to defend herself against silent assailants in the dark. It's not going well. Her duties involve locating and helping prepare the night's corpses. She tries to infer the stories of the dead from the touch of their skin; disease, wounds, old age, and so on. In the evening she begs in the city's watering holes and is charged to return with three knew pieces of information. She's acquired a friendly cat through whom she can, when she stills her mind, see the people she's spying on.When the Kindly Man asks her for her new intelligence, she tells him that she's figured out that it is him who's been attacking her in the dark. She hits him on the knuckles with her staff. He's amazed that she's figured it out, not noticing the cat prowling the rafters. Send us a textJon welcomes Queen Selyse and her entourage. He then hammers out the details of a loan with the Iron Bank. Later he's notified that a girl has arrived at the castle. Simon and Mackelly suggest they keep the giant out of the liquor cabinet.Chapter Review:Lord Commander Jon Snow greets Queen Selyse Baratheon. She and her entourage have stopped at Castle Black on their way to the Nightfort. Before escorting her and Princess Shireen to the King's Tower, Jon warns the queen about the state of the Nightfort. The queen is undeterred. On the way to their quarters, the group meets Wun Wun, the giant currently living at Castle Black. He bends the knee to the southern royalty, but his laugh frightens the party and steel is drawn.Tycho Nestoris, an emissary of the Iron Bank, is part of the queen's party. As the Lannisters are refusing to make the crown's payments, Tycho will offer the bank's backing, if Stannis agrees to shoulder the debt. Jon and Tycho come to terms on a loan from the bank that will allow the Night's Watch to buy food to survive the winter. Jon also negotiates the use of Tycho's three ships, to add to the rescue party to bring the wildlings at Hardhome south of the Wall.Later on, Jon is told that a girl has been found and is resting in maester Aemon's chambers. Jon is hopeful he'll be reunited with his sister Arya. However, the girl is too old. She turns out to be Alys Karstark. She's seeking protection from Jon from her uncles, who plan to marry her off, create an heir, then remove her from the picture. She informs Jon that her great uncle Arnolf only aligned himself with Stannis so that he could then betray the king when Stannis sieges Winterfell.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Jon Snow - Bastard son of Ned Stark. Her looming nuptials strain their relationship. The Yunkaii continue to mass beyond her gates. She knows deep down that this will never be her city.She holds court and gets a coded lecture from the Green Grace about her infidelities. Then Daario presents the Westerosi he captured and convinced to come over to her cause. The last 3 are the contingent from Dorne and present her with the contract drawn up by Oberyn Martell and William Darry for Viserys to marry Princess Arianne. She correctly infers that Quentyn hopes that he and she can fulfill the spirit of the contract. She welcomes him, but reaffirms that it is too late.The next day she marries Hizadhr Zo Loraq in a long ceremony. Simon and Mackelly hope she's packed her thermals.Chapter Review:Stannis Baratheon's army winds out of Deepwood Motte. Among the baggage rolls Asha Greyjoy, fettered and guarded by Alysane “She-Bear” Mormont. Asha is Stannis's living trophy for the lords of the north. The king plans to march 100 leagues through the forest in 15 days to Winterfell. A feat many of his followers claim his brother Robert would have done in 10 days. But this king is not his brother.Asha watches Stannis's grim procession with a broken ankle and a sharper mind. She recalls kneeling before him to save the last nine of her men and finds no mercy in the king, only duty. The southrons doubted the march but the northmen insisted.Snow begins on the fourth day and never stops. Wagons vanish through ice, men freeze or simply sit down to die. The queen's men call for a sacrifice to please their red god. “Pray harder,” Stannis tells them. Each night brings a smaller campfire and a growing list of losses. By day 20, Asha's cart horse dies. Her shackles come off, but she must walk. The food's gone, the grain's gone, and hope is dwindling. Only the northmen seem unaffected by "autumn's kiss."At last they find a crofter's village. An opportunity to fish the frozen lake and huddle in the storm. Come morning, there are no trumpets, no warhorns, only white silence. Send us a textTheon has the freedom of Winterfell while Ramsay is distracted by Arya. He gets wooed by Abel's women and learns the source of Barbrey Dustin's animus towards the Starks. Simon and Mackelly try to see light at the end of the tunnel.Chapter Review:Theon Greyjoy roams Winterfell considering whether he might escape. But since The Iron Islands are death to him, and Winterfell is the only home he's ever known, where would he go? Intel arrives that the snow storm that blights the castle has impacted Stannis even more - his march has ground to a halt.Rowan, one of Abel's women, asks Theon to describe how he took Winterfell, so that he might be immortalized in song. He refuses to share. Her kindness reeks of a Ramsay trap. Sour Alyn has been telling people that Ramsay keeps Arya chained naked to the bed. Theon knows this not to be true as he acts as her maid. She is bruised and frequently in tears however.Barbrey Dustin thinks those tears are more dangerous than Stannis' swords. The north fear the Boltons but love the Starks. A sentiment that she doesn't share. She confides in Theon why she hates the Starks and why she's looking out for Ned's bones headed north. Send us a textTyrion and company are all but sunk by a fearsome storm after being becalmed for weeks. Be careful what you wish for. They're rescued by, what even the nose-less can tell is a slave-ship. Mackelly and Simon move things from the frying pan into the fire.Chapter Review:Tyrion Lannister, Penny, and Jorah Mormont are still aboard the Selaesori Qhoran AKA “the Stinky Steward.” It's been becalmed for nearly two weeks and the sailors are beginning to question if Tyrion and Penny are actually lucky. They are also eyeing Pretty Pig with hungry looks. To distract and amuse them, Tyrion agrees to joust with Penny. He's kind of hopeless, but she points out that that is rather the point. Afterward, he goads Mormont about his plans for Tyrion and Daenerys until the knight knocks Tyrion's tooth out. A pyrrhic victory right there.Finally a wind picks up, but it portends an almighty storm and Moqorro admits that the ship was never going to reach Qarth, not because it was going to redirect to Meereen, but because this storm was going to destroy it. The storm is immense and the ships is ruined. It comes through still afloat but with no mast, no Moqorro, flooded lower sections, and no hope of survival. But a ship is spotted headed their way. Unfortunately, as it nears Mormont is able to guess from the stench that it is a slave ship.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Tyrion Lannister - Youngest son of Tywin Lannister whom he murdered. Mackelly and Simon roll out the barbed wire and start digging the trenches.Chapter Review:In the Old Palace of Sunspear, Areo Hotah watches as Maester Caleotte delivers an ebony chest to Prince Doran Martell. Inside is the skull of Gregor Clegane, which Obara Sand places on a marble pedestal. Doran declares that “the Mountain rides no more.” Ser Balon Swann, there on behalf of Queen Cersei, is made uneasy by the spicy food, the politics, and Princess Arianne's careful attention.Cersei's letter requests that Myrcella visit King's Landing, with Trystane to accompany her and Doran to take Oberyn's seat on the small council. Doran suggests they travel by ship, and Balon's reluctance to travel by sea does not go unnoticed.After the feast, Doran gathers Obara, Nymeria, Tyene, Arianne, Ellaria, and Hotah in his solar. Ellaria breaks at the Sand Snakes' refusal to accept the end of the blood feud with the Lannisters, rejecting the endless cycle of vengeance. When she leaves, the Sand Snakes demand war, but Doran forces them to swear obedience before revealing that Cersei's invitation is a trap meant to kill Trystane on the road. The usual naysayers say nay, but Jon is adamant and takes Ghost along for added protection. They find a grove of weirwoods occupied by a sorry gang of refugee wildlings and a giant. Jon avoids bloodshed and the people (and giant) are invited to return to the Wall under their protection. They do - they don't have much choice. Simon and Mackelly are rooting for him.Chapter Review:Bran Stark starts his training in green-seeing and skin-changing with the three-eyed crow, who we learn is former Lord Commander of the Night's Watch Bryden Rivers. Jojen Reed's health has recovered but he seems resigned to a fate that he won't share with his increasingly concerned sister Meera.Bran continues to use Hodor to explore the cavern system, the big man has taken to curling up in a mental ball when Bran intrudes. Bran successfully wargs into a relatively willing raven and enjoys the experience of flying. He's also introduced to the skill of greenseeing. The immortal weirwoods have no conception of time, and so by becoming one with them Bran can see events that are remote in both distance and time. His first forays take him to the Winterfell godswood where he sees his relatives, and then in a cinematic montage a collection of his ancestors. It takes coming through a tumultuous storm to make the young girl realize that she wants to live. They sail close to the ruins of Valyria, closer than the crew would like. Only the Bolton's need to keep the Dustins and Ryswells on-board is keeping Ramsay's anger in check. As Ramsay and company feast, they're interrupted by Lord Roose Bolton, who orders everyone out except Ramsay and Reek.He's decided that Ramsay should marry “Arya” at Winterfell. Strong symbolism for the northern lords. In the meantime, he needs to borrow Reek. Ramsay warns his captive not to blab his secrets and remember every word his father utters.As they ride to Barrow Hall, Roose admits to Reek that he believes Ramsay murdered his trueborn son Domeric, and a similar fate awaits any issue from his new marriage to Walda Frey. He takes Reek to Lady Barbrey Dustin, who thinks that Theon has lost his mind. Simon and Mackelly fuss over the bride-to-be.Chapter Review:Daenerys Targaryen clashes with Admiral Groleo. He wants her to unleash the dragons on the blockading ships, she wants him to build ships and fight her enemies. Thus far Hizdahr zo Loraq has been true to his word: 26 days with no murders.Skahaz mo Kandaq, the Shavepate, has been spying on Hizdahr and reports that he has visited 11 of the great families' pyramids. The Shavepate is convinced that Hizdahr has this kind of control because he is in control - and thinks a bit of firm questioning would draw out a confession. Daenerys doesn't doubt Skahaz' ability to extract information, she just doubts its usefulness.The Green Grace reports that a rider has come from Astapor bringing the Bloody Flux with him. More refugees follow and Daenerys determines that they will be kept outside the city walls with an attempt made to keep the sick away from the healthy. Brown Ben Plum returns and also encourages Dany to use her dragons. She is unmoved. But on reflection she realizes that she cannot face the external threat until she's suppressed the internal one. He apologizes for the disrespect that Davos was shown. But while the Lannister, Frey, and Bolton alliance held his remaining son Wylis, he was forced to play along. But the feast that can be heard is to welcome the heir home - and Lord Wyman can let the mask slip a little. A ruse was pulled, a criminal was made to look like Davos and executed - his head and hands were displayed above the walls, heavily tarred and distorted with an onion in the mouth.Davos is ready to seal the alliance between Stannis and the Manderlys. Jenny and Mackelly break down Jon's busy day.Chapter Review:Lord Commander Jon Snow has commanded nine Night's Watch brothers to range north of the Wall. One of those nine is Ser Alliser Thorne, who is not happy about the assignment. He tells Jon that if he dies by an Other's blade, he'll be back for Jon as a wight. Afterward in the yard, Jon spars with three green recruits at once, easily defeating them. Rattleshirt is unimpressed and challenges Jon to fight a real man. When the fight begins, Jon is surprised by Rattleshirt's prowess with a sword. Eventually, the wildling has to be dragged off Jon.Clydas interrupts with a letter from Barrowtown bearing the seal of House Bolton. Warden of the North Roose Bolton has returned and requires fealty from the lords of the kingdom. He also wishes for their attendance to celebrate the marriage of his son Ramsay to… Arya Stark. Jon is stunned. He thought his sister died in King's Landing.That evening he runs into Melisandre alone in the yard. She foretells him that his sister Arya will arrive at Castle Black, fleeing her forced marriage. She then bonds with Ghost, much to Jon's surprise. She tells Jon that three of the rangers he sent north will not survive. Jon will only find their eyeless heads. He tries all his tricks to wheedle out of his predicament but gets nowhere. In the city, they see the High Priest of R'hllor preaching a pro-Daenerys message to a multitude of slaves, who are here for all of it. Tyrion feels the same atmosphere as when King's Landing rioted.They learn that the Golden Company is headed to Westeros, and the Triarchs are happy to help. Tyrion is amazed that Aegon took his bait. But wonders if it is a ruse, and that Griff's destination remains Meereen.They meet the Widow of the Waterfront, a wizened former slave and business-woman. Ser Jorah asks for passage, not to King's Landing, but to Meereen! Tyrion is ecstatic. Jorah tanks his way into her bad books, but the situation is saved when Penny, a dwarf, attacks Tyrion. Her brother died at the hands of those seeking Cersei's favor, and she blames Tyrion. While he sleeps she gets a snack and meets her other love interest Tris Botley. They speak of future plans but she's dismissive and quite cruel. He reminds her of a historical kingsmoot that was overturned when the heir-apparent was not invited. A lightbulb goes off, but is immediately forgotten when war-horns sound. The northern clans have come. Simon and Mackelly offer them fresh brown cloaks to turn.Chapter Review:Prince Quentyn Martell and his traveling companions survived the siege of Astapor, having signed up with the sellsword company the Windblown to earn passage to Slaver's Bay. Now, under the direction of the Yunkai generals, the company is turning their sights to Meereen. Quentyn knows it's time to desert before they end up fighting against the very woman he's been sent to marry. The task is easier said than done, as they have made friends in the company. Making matters worse, rumors are spreading around the camps about the horrible atrocities Daenerys has committed, causing the prince to second-guess his marriage plans.The Tattered Prince, the leader of the Windblown, has been given instructions to keep Astapori refugees away from Yunkai, as many carry the bloody flux. They are to turn them back to Astapor or drive them toward Meereen. However, the sellsword captain has his own plans. He assembles many Westerosi-born members of the company and orders them to secretly defect to Dany's side. He figures their Westerosi roots will make a good cover story for their defection to the Targaryen queen. Connington, infected with greyscale, is impressed. Simon and Mackelly carefully examine their extremities.Chapter ReviewGriff, Jon Connington, leads young Griff, Aegon Targaryen, to the encampment of the Golden Company. They are led to the commander's tent. Within Homeless Harry Strickland is bathing his sore toes, Connington is not impressed. He'd been uncertain of his reception as he had left the company in disgrace a dozen years earlier. However, the assembled captains appear to be aware of the ruse and the contract with Ilyrio Mopatis to fight for Young Griff. The prince's true identity is revealed to a lack of surprise. Talk turns to how they might get him to Daenerys. All routes seem problematic. Eventually Aegon himself offers an alternative. He is the only dragon they need. Why not go to Westeros and stake his claim there? Daenerys can have Meereen. The captains rally to this call and Connington is impressed by his young charge. Aegon is taken to meet the men, with the Young Griff persona back in place. Meanwhile Connington examines his fingers that are clearly showing the signs of greyscale. He hopes that he can live long enough to see his Prince back on the throne and for his bones to be laid to rest in Griffin's Roost.Young Griff/Aegon Targaryen - Teenage nephew of Daenerys. She demands 90 days of no killing and she'll marry him on the 91st. Hizdahr rushes to comply.Last meeting of the day is with Daario Naharis. He's not thrilled with the news and the pair get into a heated argument. Dany sends him away and orders Ser Barristan Selmy to keep Daario from her presence in the future. His companions have pulled him from the river and are treating his extremities with vinegar to prevent greyscale infection. He must prick his extremities every few hours to check for loss of feeling.He talks to Young Griff (aka Aegon Targaryen) over a game of cyvasse. The young man shares what he's been told of his rescue. When things looked bad in King's Landing, Varys paid a tanner for his baby and smuggled the real Aegon across the Narrow Sea to Ilyrio Mopatis. Tyrion gives the young prince a few useful lessons, in particular not to expect a warm welcome from Aunty Daenerys. And to perhaps go to Dorne and lay his claim to the Iron Throne for himself. Then when they do reunite, it will be as equals.Tyrion visits Selhorys with Haldon. They learn that the Red Priests are singing Dany's praises, that she is Azor Ahai reborn. But that the nobility of the Rhoyne are very much opposed to her thwarting of the slave trade. Meera is supporting Jojen, almost as much as Hodor is Bran.Sixty yards from the opening Hodor's leg is grabbed from below them. Wights emerge from beneath the snow. As wights surround them, Summer kills as many as he can, but Bran sees that it will be hopeless. In desperation, Bran takes control of Hodor and the combination of castle-forged steel, 7ft of bemuscled automaton, and Bran's laser-focus on staying alive alleviates the immediate danger.But the day is only won because a Child of the Forest intervenes to set the wights aflame. She gets the group into the cave, apart from Coldhands who cannot enter. Within Bran meets the three-eyed crow. He's been watching and waiting for Bran. But the lords recognize Theon Greyjoy.Ramsay tells Theon that they're going to clean him up and that they ride to war so that Ramsay can marry Arya Stark.
