Welcome back to When Words Fail, the podcast that battles depression one riff at a time. James Cox—a self‑styled “handicapped” guide on a mission to prove that music can be the therapy we all need.In today's episode we sit down with the ever‑mysterious Jeff Tuttle—known for his work with The Dillinger Escape Plan, the post‑hardcore outfit Old Gods, and the lightning‑fast super‑group Shock Narcotic. Jeff walks us through his winding road from a small‑town Michigan kid who grew up with the eclectic bassist and became a songwriter behind some of the most relentless, under‑a‑minute tracks in modern metal. We'll unpack:The “Super‑Group” Myth – Jeff's take on why labels like “supergroup” can feel limiting, and why the chemistry of a true unit matters more than star power.Songwriting in the Abyss – How he wrestles with riffs that won't fit, splits them into new songs, and finally lets the creative flow take over. From Old Gods to Shock Narcotic – The evolution of his sound, the freedom he finally found writing his own heavy material, and the collaborative dance with vocalist Sean.A Time‑Travel Tour Fantasy – If Shock Narcotic could crash any era, which one would it be and why?Personal Passions Outside the Stage – Jeff's love of classic horror (the Evil Dead forever), his admiration for John McLaughlin's jazz‑fusion vision, and his secret devotion to Sleep Token.Whether you're a metalhead craving ferocious riffs, a fan of genre‑blending experiments, or simply looking for a reminder that angry music can still be a soundtrack for happy souls, this conversation will hit all the right notes. So crank the volume up, tighten those headphones, and get ready for a raw, honest, and unapologetically heavy dive into the mind of Jeff Tuttle—only on When Words Fail. Let the healing begin.

Two listener questions form bookends to an overarching concept this week on the Lore Watch Podcast. First, what is happening to Outland as it is now, 20 years after we visited? Is it still crumbling as it was, and what is becoming of the people and creatures still living there? Then, continuing on the theme, the next question asks, what if Azeroth's fate -- after burrowing Old Gods and Titan stabbing and 20 years of varied psychic abuse -- is already sealed, and our planet is doomed to crumble as well? It's a very optimistic, cheerful episode of Lore Watch this week. We hope you enjoy it?If you enjoy the show, please support us on Patreon, where you can get these episodes early and ad-free! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

While many modern Christians are unfamiliar with the story, it was previously considered common knowledge that the death and resurrection of Christ sealed away the powers of the ancient gods. Several historians, such as Plutarch, comment on the fact, while early church fathers claimed it as a victory. Pastor Anderw Isker and historian Alex Petkas join me to discuss the fascinating moment in history and what it means for the modern world. Show Notes: In this second helping of the Ash Ely Planescape Postmortem, the hosts dissect the juicy narrative meat of a campaign marinated in memory loss, Mind Flayers, and metaphysical trauma. From the desperate hunt for Orochalcum to the chaos of battling Cathraxus (yes, that Cathraxus), our hosts recount the highs, lows, and emotional collateral damage of storytelling across the planes. The episode dives deep into the decisions that shaped the campaign—like letting players talk to their other selves (always a great idea until it's not), negotiating with shady NPCs who definitely read the fine print, and exploring the emotional weight of being a dwarven sister with unresolved issues. Featuring Rattatosk mischief, back-alley conspiracies, a glitch in the multiverse, and the Lady of Pain pulling the ultimate disappearing act, this episode will remind you that sometimes the best part of tabletop games is just how weird, poignant, and gloriously off-rails they can get. With plenty of laughs and genuine reflection, the crew discusses their favorite moments, mechanical experiments, player decisions, and the challenges of storytelling in a setting where time is subjective, death is optional, and your base of operations might just be a sentient castle. This is a deep-dive into what makes a great campaign weirdly wonderful, packed with practical advice for GMs and players alike. The use of audio files and soundboards added flavor to the podcast experience, paralleling the dynamic creativity of the campaign itself. Planescape Setting Insights: Sigil proved to be a difficult but rewarding setting, demanding intense creativity from the GM and strong player investment. The Bleak Cabal introduced complex moral and philosophical themes around nihilism and existentialism. Harmonium conflicts introduced tension and clear stakes, adding urgency to the narrative. Excelsior and Mindenheim presented contrasting moral dilemmas, emphasizing how planar alignments influence gameplay. Gameplay Mechanics: The game included unique mechanics such as reincarnation, highlighting Planescape's flair for the metaphysical. Gambling mechanics introduced at Fortune's Wheel made the campaign feel alive and added extra stakes. Random tables were used to enhance chaos, though they occasionally clashed with narrative flow. Time in the Outlands was deliberately nebulous—used as a story device rather than a linear tracker. Character & Roleplay: Ash Ely discussed character arcs, spotlighting the emotional growth and backstory payoffs that came through during play. Character death and rebirth were treated as storytelling tools, not just fail states. The castle base of operations became a central hub for player bonding and improvised roleplay. Downtime activities, such as research or dealing with extraplanar paperwork, added depth and fun. Player Agency & Story Design: Player choices mattered deeply, often shifting the trajectory of the campaign. Side quests organically evolved into major plotlines, highlighting the value of listening to player interests. Fetch quests and bureaucratic challenges became unexpectedly entertaining when paired with strong character voices. Homebrew content enriched the setting, especially when integrated into existing multiversal lore. Lessons & Reflections: Player engagement and feedback were vital in navigating the weirdness of Planescape. The group shared regrets and lessons learned, emphasizing the importance of flexibility and communication. The campaign reinforced that creativity and player trust are the heart of any great tabletop experience. Final Thoughts: Whether you're a veteran GM diving into planar politics or a curious player who wants to gamble with the Fates (literally), this episode offers a treasure trove of inspiration. The Planescape campaign may be over, but its echoes will bounce around the multiverse—and the RPGBOT cast's brains—for a long time to come.

Tonight on Veritas... our special guest is Christopher McIntosh. He's not just a scholar or a historian - he's a wanderer of worlds most people never see. From the gothic silence of Oxford quads to the torch-lit rituals in a frozen German grove, his life reads like a spellbook soaked in history, myth, and personal revelation. In his new book, The Call of the Old Gods, Christopher opens a portal - not just to the old deities of Europe, but to the forgotten places inside ourselves that still remember magic. This isn't theory. This isn't reenactment. This is a lived journey. What happens when a man born into academia surrenders to the irrational, the mystical, the sacred chaos of Pagan tradition? What does it mean to feel the land under your feet as more than dirt - but as memory, presence, and power? We'll explore visions of Pan and the pulse of myth in the modern city. The bloodlines that called to him across centuries. Sacred breath, ancient rites, and the subtle maps drawn by stars and gods alike. But we'll also confront deeper questions - What is real in a spiritual life? What is inherited, and what is chosen? How do you know the gods are calling? Christopher McIntosh's path is not a trend or a rebellion. It's a lifelong act of remembering. And tonight, we remember with him.

Drew Phillips opened the doors of Four Phantoms in Greenfield, Massachusetts in 2021. He began his fermentation career in the Pacific Northwest, and while waiting to open his own brewery, he took on the role as cider maker at Artifact Cider Project. Drew Phillips Known for his creative ciders and beers, Drew blends tradition with innovation, sourcing local fruit and experimenting with wild fermentation. Check out his talk on the making of Old Gods . In this episode, Drew shares how Four Phantoms' unique approach reflects the terroir of Western Massachusetts. Early Challenges of a Brewery/Cidery: Gaining a License Drew initially couldn't produce cider legally due to licensing restrictions in Massachusetts. After securing a farmer winery license, he started making cider alongside beer and mead. All ciders are crafted from Pine Hill fruit in Colrain, Massachusetts. Signature Ciders and Fermentation Techniques Late Harvest – 6.5% Apples (Spy, Golden Russet and Baldwin) Tamlane – 6% 100% Macintosh apples, aged on black birch wood, giving it a herbal, German liqueur note. Redfield – 7.7% 100% Redfield apples – A red-fleshed apple cider with natural acidity and structure. Chapin's Waltz – 8.5% A blend of Golden Russet, Baldwin, and Northern Spy, co-fermented with low intervention. King of the Wharf – 7.5% A Mac-based cider aged on rum-soaked oak chips, giving it a smooth, warming finish. Old Gods – 8% Inspired by Finnish farmhouse brewing, fermented on black birch. Listen to Episode 345 on how Old Gods a Co-Fermentation of Wort and Apple Juice was made! Ciders Tasted during this chat Low Intervention and Sense of Place Drew emphasizes low-intervention cider making — no back-sweetening, minimal sulfites, and natural wild cultures. The ciders reflect the unique qualities of Western Massachusetts apples and local wood aging. Poly tanks and oak aging contribute to the distinctive flavors and textures. Community and the Future of Four Phantoms Four Phantoms Tasting Area by the production room Drew values the connection between local agriculture and cider. He sees cider's future as more craft-focused than beer, with room for independent voices. “Cider resists commercialization,” says Drew. “It's about sense of place.” Contact Info for Four Phantoms Website: https://fourphantoms.net Mentions in this Cider Chat Totally Cider Tours Cider Route Itinerary send a request to Cider Chat Cider Rap Song – by Robert Sherman of EsoTerra Ciderworks in Durango, Colorado
