Send us a textA Feast for Crows comes to an end when Sam reaches Oldtown and the Citadel. He gives his news to Alleras, as well as Maester Marwyn who promptly departs for Essos. Simon, Jenny, and Mackelly review the murder's banquet.Chapter Review:The Cinnamon Wind makes its way through the Redwyne Straits towards Oldtown. Signs of the trouble being caused by the Iron Born are everywhere, and the approaches are patrolled vigilantly. Samwell Tarly wonders if even Horn Hill would be safe for Gilly if the Ironborn are this bold, but he can't think of a better plan. When they arrive in the city, he makes his way to the Citadel to fulfill the two parts of his mission: to enroll and to share the news from the Wall. The seneschal's acolyte keeps him waiting for hours until Alleras (the Sphynx) points out that the man is expecting a bribe. Sam, triggered by this nickname, blurts his whole story to Alleras, who suggests that Sam forget the seneschal and the archmaesters. None of whom would believe him anyway, and instead tell the story to archmaester Marwyn.Sam agrees and by the light of a burning obsidian candle he repeats his tale. Marywn immediately departs for Essos where he intends to advise and protect Daenerys Targaryen from the Citadel. He's convinced that the maesters will try to destroy the dragons. He advises Sam to forge his chain quickly.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Samwell Tarly - Brother of the Night's Watch, friend to John Snow. Slayer of Others.Gilly - Daughter of Craster. Send us a Text Message.Sam tries to find the increasingly flighty Dareon and someone who knows something about dragons - to fulfill the dying wish of Maester Aemon. He gets bruised knuckles, a lungful of canal water, but he does meet a sailor who knows about the dragons. Simon and Mackelly share his pain.Chapter ReviewSamwell Tarly is in desperate straits in Braavos. Gilly is inconsolable, Maester Aemon is dying, and Dareon is MIA. Between overreaching on their accommodation, paying for passage to Oldtown that they missed because of Aemon's ill-health, and the cost of a doctor to visit and tell them that a 102-year-old man with a nasty cough is probably dying - they've nothing left for food and fire.Dareon can make coin with his singing, but he promptly spends it on drink and women. He has no idea why Gilly keeps crying, and even she cannot blame him for wanting to be elsewhere. Aemon wants to hear more of dragons. He remembers them. Sam thinks that is an exaggeration, but Aemon insists that he and his brothers always dreamed of dragons. Sam braves the night and almost gets into a fight with a couple of wannabe-bravos. He's saved by a young girl selling cockles, who calls herself Cat. Sam finds Dareon in a brothel and gets into a fist fight. He's thrown unceremoniously into the canal, where he almost drowns before being saved by a sailor Xhondo. He's a Summer Islander and a mate aboard the Cinnamon Wind. Sam is miserable aboard the ship headed for Braavos. Gilly is inconsolable and he's seasick. He can't understand her tears until Maester Aemon points out that she left her own baby at Castle Black, and that she's nursing Dalla's child. Simon and Mackelly try to keep down their breakfast.Chapter Review:Samwell Tarly is seasick aboard the Blackbird. He takes solace in his companions' hopeful futures: Gilly will be a maid at Horn Hill, Dareon will recruit for the Night's Watch using his singing, and Maester Aemon will retire at the Citadel, safe from Melisandre's fires.Gilly and her baby are miserable, rarely leaving their cabin. Sam's fear of the sea dates back to his father Randyll Tarly's harsh swimming lesson. This voyage is only his second, the first being a traumatic trip to the Arbor where he was bullied and rejected as a foster child by Lord Paxter Redwyne.Dareon complains about Gilly's distress. Sam defends her, understanding her fear of the unfamiliar ocean. Maester Aemon reminisces about his voyage to the Wall with Ser Duncan the Tall. Aemon enjoys the rain but becomes ill from exposure.Violent storms batter the ship, intensifying their misery. The sailors blame their bad luck on having a woman aboard. When Sam asks Aemon for a remedy for Gilly's distress, the maester reveals her sorrow is due to grief, not fear. Gilly's baby is not her own; she left her child at Castle Black and took Dalla's baby instead. Lord Commander Jon Snow orchestrated this swap to protect the child from Melisandre's fires.Sam is horrified and questions his involvement in making Jon Lord Commander. As the sea briefly calms, Dareon mocks Sam's prediction of more storms, calling him craven. Burdened by the weight of recent revelations, Sam knows the worst is yet to come.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Samwell Tarly - Brother of the Night's Watch, friend to John Snow. Get bonus episodes on Patreon! Samwell Tarly joins the narrative just in the nick of time, as an unlikely answer to the existential and immaterial problems threatening Westeros. Cam argues that Sam embodies the hope, forgiveness, and second chances that lie at the heart of GRRM's supposedly bleak and grim world. Maggie explores the Tolkien feints within this chapter, unspooling the echoes of fellowships, disappearing uncles, and loyal sidekicks. We work together to theorize our way through Jon's impossibly poignant dream, and close out the discussion by resolving the Doctor Faustus curiosity we introduced a few weeks ago.

Sam and the men vying for Lord Commander of the Night's Watch attend an audience with King Stannis. Stannis wants a Lord Commander chosen tonight. Sam hatches a plan to consolidate the votes between the leading contenders. Both men agree a new candidate might suffice. Sam knows just the guy. Simon and Mackelly pick up what he's putting down.Chapter Review:Samwell Tarly assists Maester Aemon to a summons by King Stannis Baratheon. They are accompanied by the current vote-getters for Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. King Stannis has had enough of waiting for the brothers to agree on a leader. He wants this wrapped up today. When Janos Slynt suggests King Stannis offer guidance to the brothers, Stannis says anybody but Janos should suffice.King Stannis has other needs from the Night's Watch, and the Lord Commander should have a say in the matter. He wants the Gift and the abandoned castles. The brothers don't take this news well. Stannis says he needs to rebuild the castles to garrison a force to stop the Others' attack. Before leaving, Maester Aemon asks to “see” Lightbringer. Sam describes the beautifully glowing sword to the blind maester. Afterward, Aemon finds it odd the sword gave off no heat. Later, Sam hatches a plan to stop Slynt from being voted Lord Commander. He asks Cotter Pyke to back Ser Deny Mallister. Pyke has no interest. Sam asks Ser Denys to back Pyke. Again, no interest. Sam suggests a different candidate. To Ser Denys he touts the mystery brother as well-educated, from old blood, castle trained, and highly trusted. To Pyke he describes the man as a good fighter but a bastard. Both men agree this unnamed candidate has potential.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Samwell Tarly - Brother of the Night's Watch, friend to John Snow. Mackelly and Simon consider voter fraud to keep Slynt out of the top spot.Chapter Review:Samwell Tarly, Gilly, and Gilly's baby have finally made it to Castle Black. Sam will lie and say that the boy is his. Jon thinks it could work, but it depends on the type of man the boy grows up to be. It is killing Sam to keep a secret from Jon. Sam knows that Bran is alive but swore multiple times not to reveal it, and he holds true to his word. That night the men vote on a new Lord Commander. Nobody is close to the two-thirds vote necessary to win. Denys Mallister and Cotter Pyke are the front-runners but Janos Slynt continues to climb in the voting. Sam and the remnants of the Great Ranging find respite at Craster's Keep. However, their host isn't overflowing with generosity. Hunger and frustration eventually bubble over into mutiny. Mackelly and Simon pack the diaper bag.Chapter Review:Samwell Tarly attends to the ailing ranger Bannen, while he and many of the other Night's Watch brothers shelter in Craster's Keep. Craster gives them only a weak onion soup for sustenance, while Craster dines on a sausage. While Sam chats with Grenn, Lord Commander Mormont arrives and pulls Sam aside.Sam had told the Lord Commander about how he killed an Other with a dragonglass dagger. Mormont realizes that the Night's Watch has forgotten their true purpose over the thousands of years. You don't build a 700 foot wall to keep wildlings out. Sam and the remnants of the Great Ranging are high-tailing it back to the wall. They've been decimated by the Others and wights. Sam eventually falls behind, but with a dragonglass dagger he manages to kill a White Walker. Mackelly and Simon walk way less than a mile in his shoes.Chapter Review:Sam Tarly is sobbing with tiredness, pain, and cold. The reader, with annoyance at Sam's bleating. But he has had it rough. He was rudely awaken by three blasts of the Night's Watch horn. Said a cheery hello to his incontinent would-be assassin Chett. Failed in his mission to release ravens with the increasingly dire news of how the battle progressed between the Great Ranging and the army of Others that overwhelmed them. And finally fled on horseback. That didn't last. Lord Commander Mormont gathered the remnants together, enforced a circle of torch bearers to keep pursuit by the undead at bay, and made the able-bodied dismount in favor of the injured and supplies. Finally, he points them in the direction of the Wall.Sam collapses. He can go no further. Grenn cannot move him, but Small Paul carries him for a while - on the promise of a talking raven. The trio fall outside the ring of torches and a White Walker upon an undead horse attacks them. Paul succumbs but his weight pulls the sword from the Other's grip. Will and Phoenix from “Tales from the Waystone” podcast join me to talk about Simmon, a budding alchemist and a wonderful friend. We celebrate his kindness and I draw Phoenix into the dark side of “future-casting” about Book Three. We talk about the sandy-haired man who comes to the Waystone in the frame, a possible falling out between Kvothe and Sim (and K's possible guilt), Kvothe dropping the ball on reciprocating Wil and Sim's friendship, and the possibility of Sim not being heterosexual. I also plug the 1964 movie “Becket,” an incredible study in how to make a close male friendship seem fruity. And yet again I decry the portrayal of some LGBT+ folks in this series. Will educates me on Samwell Tarly of “Game of Thrones” and compares him to Simmon. The Dalonir family and the Duke of Gibea lead us into a discussion on the Amyr. Somehow, Max Rebo and his “jizz band” make it in. Will drops a “Fight Club”-related theory I've never heard before…and much, much more! Enjoy! John Bradley was around 22 when he got the part that changed his life. On Game of Thrones he played Samwell Tarly, John Snow's close friend for nearly a decade. In the beginning, it's clear that Sam isn't cut out for the world of Game of Thrones. He isn't a natural warrior. He's a bigger guy. Kind of soft. He's smart, but not especially cunning. He's nice, maybe a little goofy. And on any other show, you can pretty much guess his character's trajectory: maybe he stays a bumbling comic sidekick or maybe he gets killed off tragically. But instead the things he was bullied for: his kindness, his empathy, his bookishness... they turn out to be assets, not liabilities. These days, John Bradley keeps busy. He has two movies out this month – sci-fi disaster movie Moonfall and the romantic comedy Marry Me. We revisit our conversation with John from 2019. He talks with us about the surreal experience of watching the finale Game of Thrones after it consumed most of his 20's. Plus, he shared the things that make him geek out, and answered some very fun questions from twitter.

The Night's Watch arrive at the Fist of the First Men, an ancient fort. Mormont decides to wait there as it is a good spot for friends to find them, and equally a fine place to keep an eye on their enemies. Ghost acts weird and leads Jon to a cache of dragonglass weapons. Mackelly and Simon feel the keenness of the edges. Chapter Review: The Night's Watch reach the Fist of the First Men. A rocky outcropping that pierces the canopy of the Haunted Forest. It was used as a fort in ancient times, and it is very defensible. Ghost is very unhappy as they climb towards the summit, and Mormont tells Jon to let the direwolf run free. Ghost does not need a second invitation. The position is advantageous, with steep slopes and basic walls, but Jon is concerned that without a water source they could not survive a siege. Mormont orders cisterns to be dug and water brought up from a nearby stream. That will keep the men busy. Mormont wants the rangers to stay close, not crossing the Milkwater River to the west, beyond which are the Frostfang Mountains, which according to Craster are where the Wildlings have gathered under the banner of Mance Rayder. Jon is worried that this limits their ability to find his uncle Benjen, but Mormont points out that it's easier for one man to find three hundred than the reverse. Plus, they need to wait somewhere conspicuous so that Qhorin Halfhand and his men from the Shadow Tower will find them. Ghost continues to freak out and Jon eventually follows him down the hill where they discover a significant cache of dragonglass weapons wrapped in a Night's Watch cloak that doesn't seem very old.  Characters/Places/Names/Events:  Night's Watch - The men who guard the Seven Kingdoms against threats from beyond the Wall. Jon Snow - Bastard son of Ned Stark. Recently sworn brother of the Night's Watch. Samwell Tarly - Brother of the Night's Watch. Heavy-set and cowardly. Attendant to Maester Aemon. Friend to Jon Snow. Cat prays for a quick and bloodless end to the war between the Baratheon brothers. She needs to be careful what she prays for because she gets mostly that. Renly is mysteriously killed by what appears to be a shadow assassin. But poor, innocent Brienne takes the blame. Simon and Mackelly examine the details of the wild night.Chapter Review: Catelyn Stark prays in a tiny sept to any of The Seven who will heed her pleas. She prays for safety and strength for her family and herself. She also prays to the Mother to watch over the men who will fight in the up-coming battle between Stannis Baratheon's meager forces and his brother Renly Baratheon's much larger army. While ruminating in the sept, Cat realizes that if Stannis' claim of incest between Queen Cersei Lannister and her brother Jamie Lannister are true, it gives possible validation to her belief that a Lannister sent the man to kill Bran. The boy must have seen them at their incest. Later, in Renly's tent, she proposes to Renly that they bring Bran forward to tell the realm what he saw. After the Lannisters have been discredited, a great council can be held to determine who should sit the Iron Throne. She asks that the battle be put on hold until she can similarly propose the plan to Stannis. Renly rejects the idea. Moments later, Renly's shadow raises its sword and plunges its shadow sword through Renly's neck. As the blood pours from him, the dying Renly falls into the arms of Brienne, who had been dressing him for battle. The commotion draws the attention of the guards. They rush in and see Brienne holding the dead king. Assuming she killed Renly, they attack. Cat convinces Robar Royce of Brienne's innocence, and he helps the women flee. Cat tries to keep the peace between Renly and Stannis Baratheon. Neither is willing to budge an inch, so Cat and the rest prepare for war. Simon and Mackelly predict the likely outcome. Chapter Review: Catelyn Stark is first to reach the hill where the two sides will parley. She cannot see the sea, but can smell it in the air. In the distance, the giant fortress of Storm's End looms with Stannis Baratheon's small army arrayed before it. The siege looks entirely pointless. Stannis arrives and exhibits the coldness he's famous for when expressing his sorrow about Ned's death. He's not there to make friends (king's don't have friends, only subjects and enemies), and reminds Cat that Robb will be next once he's dealt with Renly and Joffrey. Renly arrives and the brothers exchange unpleasantries. Each offers the other the lordship of Storm's End if he'll support the other's claim to the throne. Neither will. So the talks come to nothing. As she leaves Melisandre warns Renly to look to his sins. War is inevitable and Cat wants no part in it, but Renly refuses her request to leave. He wants her to witness his army's power and his ruthlessness in putting down dissent (even from his own kin) so that Robb will hear of it. She goes to a nearby sept to pray. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Catelyn Stark - Lady of Winterfell. Widow of Lord Eddard Stark and daughter of Hoster Tully, the Lord Paramount of the Riverlands. Stannis Baratheon - Elder brother of Renly Baratheon, rightful heir to the Iron Throne. Renly Baratheon - Robert and Stannis' youngest brother. Lord of Storm's End. Husband to Margaery Tyrell. Claimant to the Iron Throne. Margaery Tyrell - Daughter of Mace Tyrell, Lord Paramount of the Reach. Sister to Ser Loras Tyrell. Wife to King Renly Baratheon. She is reputed to resemble Lyanna Stark. The Night's Watch visit Craster's Keep. Craster provides some information, but one of his pregnant daughter-wives recruits Jon to rescue her from her fate. Jon doesn't think they can help. Simon and Mackelly ponder Gilly's future. Chapter Review: The Night's Watch arrive at Craster's Keep. Lord Commander Jeor Mormont warns all not to interact with Craster's wives. The keep is awful, little more than a midden heap. Jon Snow joins Mormont in the “hall.” The squalid building stinks, and Craster sits in the only chair. Mormont quizzes Craster about Benjen Stark, but he's not been through these parts. The last crows Craster has seen were Waymar Royce and crew. Their host knows why the villages are empty. Mance Rayder has been inviting wildlings to join him. He has intel about the King Beyond the Wall and trades it for a new axe. Outside, Ghost terrorizes a young pregnant girl named Gilly. Jon calls him off. Jon then sets up a tent and makes his own food so that he owes Craster nothing. Later Gilly approaches Jon and ask him to take her when he leaves. If her baby proves to be a boy, Craster will give him to the Others. Jon feels bad, but he cannot help. As the Night's Watch leave for the Frostfangs following the map that Sam created with Craster's help, Jon asks Mormont about Craster's sons. Mormont admits that the Night's Watch know that he gives the sons up to the woods. But they don't have dominion over him. Cat arrives in the Reach to discuss an alliance with King Renly Baratheon. She finds him amidst a tremendous host, playing at being king with feasting and tournaments. His nonchalance is punctured by news that his brother Stannis has besieged, not King's Landing, but the Baratheon seat of Storm's End. Mackelly and Simon consider the internecine implications. Chapter Review: Catelyn Stark awakes from sweet dreams of her family reunited, to the reality that she's headed further away from them. She and her honor/body-guard have skirted the troubles in the Riverlands and arrived safely in the Reach. Today will see them reach the upper Mander River and the Roseroad. She eschews a lavish breakfast to speed things along. They're spied and escorted into Renly's camp. The army is larger than she'd imagined, with banners from all over the Reach and the Stormlands. At the center, is the town of Bitterbridge and noise of a great tournament. Cat watches as an unknown knight defeats Ser Loras Tyrell to win the grand melee. The knight is revealed to be Brienne, the tall and homely daughter of Lord Selwyn Tarth. Brienne joins Renly's Rainbow Guard. Cat jousts (figuratively, and) politely with Renly who doesn't mind if Robb claims the title of king, as long as he ultimately bends the knee to Renly as the King of the Seven Kingdoms. He takes her to the tower so they can look upon his mighty host. She is not unimpressed. But his apparent primacy is challenged when news arrives that his brother Stannis has landed on the mainland with the focus of his attack, not King's Landing, but Storm's End. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Catelyn Stark - Lady of Winterfell. Widow of Lord Eddard Stark and daughter of Hoster Tully, the Lord Paramount of the Riverlands. Jon decides his future lies south of the wall. He rides out to join Robb in his fight. He's prevented from his oath-breaking by his friends, who ride after him and drag him back. Jeor Mormont announces that the Night's Watch will march north of the Wall to figure out what's going on, and Jon better jolly-well come along. The boys prepare for winter. Chapter Review: Jon Snow saddles up and, ignoring Sam's pleas, heads south to join his brother Robb Stark. He does have a few doubts about the reception his brother will give him. As Lord of Winterfell, Robb might feel the need to behead Jon for oath-breaking. Grenn, Pyp, Toad, Halder, and Matthar catch up with him and, by being unarmed and unarmored, they shame Jon into returning with them. As he serves Mormont breakfast, he's plotting his next escape. But Mormont reveals that he knows his men, and had set a watch on Jon. He's going nowhere. Mormont uses the dastardly trick of logical argument to convince Jon to stay. Is Jon such a great warrior that he would tip the war in Robb's favor? Has Jon paid any attention to the portents at the Wall, you know, like the dead rising? The realm's real fight is right here, and right here Jon might actually make a difference. The Night's Watch will sortie north of the wall to find Benjen Stark, to gain intel on Mance Rayder (the King Beyond the Wall), and to learn the truth about the Others. Ned has a chat with Maester Pycelle after a Small Council meeting about what Jon Arryn was investigating and how he was doing it. Unfortunately, "The Lineages and Histories of the Great Houses of the Seven Kingdoms" is not the most thrilling book to analyze. ("A ponderous tome.") Then, Samwell Tarly explains his super-fun father Randyll to Jon Snow. Needless to say, Randyll will not be receiving Father's Day cards. Go see Manu at Con of Thrones in Nashville! The podcast's 27th episode coincides with the beginning of Game of Thrones episode no. 4, "Cripples, Bastards, and Broken Things." Fittingly, Andrew and Manu see the leading cripple (Bran), bastard (Jon), and broken things (Tyrion and Theon). Another "broken thing" makes his debut, as Samwell Tarly comes to the Wall to join the Night's Watch. He has, uh, work to do. iTunes link

The Cast Beyond the Wall: A House of the Dragon Podcast

This week's episode of Game of Thrones may not have quite packed the same level of action that we've become used to, but “Kill the Boy” didn't disappoint in its character drama and we're ready to dive right into all of it. On this installment of The Cast Beyond the Wall, we're joined by special guests Dalton Stuart and Jessica Martin to discuss all of the latest developments in the north side of Westeros. We were all shocked by the passing of Ser Barristan after last week's cliffhanger and we try to decide whether or not showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss gave the understated fan favorite his due. In the fallout of his death, Daenerys makes a vengeful decision to begin burning the former slave owners alive. It may not be one of the most diplomatic solutions, but we chime in with our thoughts on how well her moves will play with the rest of Mereen. This season of Game of Thrones continues to give Stannis knock out moments and this week was no exception. The self-declared king continues to win us over with his respectable decisions and great one on one talks with all of our favorite characters. Before finally departing the wall, Stannis has a few last words with Jon Snow and Samwell Tarly. After decapitating the despicable Janos Slynt a couple of episodes back, Jon continues to make controversial moves in his role as Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. We take a closer look at his polarizing decision to work with the wildlings and set the likes of Ollie against him. The family drama in Winterfell began to ramp up this week as well now that Sansa is starting to settle into her old home. After years of being apart, she is finally reunited with Theon and the results are truly twisted. There's certainly a lot to discuss this week and as always, we break it all down in our lengthy and in-depth discussion. Tune in below and be sure to leave a comment letting us know what you thought of “Kill the Boy.” Subscribe on iTunes Follow us on Facebook Watch us on Youtube Don't miss all of the latest Game of Thrones updates at We Got This Covered
