We have more Mike Flanagan news this week. With the release date of his Carrie series we discuss what we would like to see from the show. Predator: Badlands recently released on Hulu and did record numbers. We talk about what this means for the franchise. We have been lucky to cover some fantastic true crime documentaries on our humble little podcast. We have also seen some great folk horror. We never thought the two would come together. The Last Sacrifice does just that in a surprising documentary. There have been plenty of movies that have been moving along nicely when they suddenly lose the plot. Things become a mess at that point and it is pretty much impossible to get things back on track. A strong argument can be made that The Last Sacrifice loses its way. But it is one of the most fascinating tangents you will ever see. And it ultimately does tie into the greater mystery. The Dreadful will draw lots of attention for its casting of Kit Harrington and Sophie Turner. But it is a performance from another actor that steals the show. The film covers some deep themes and is bolstered by its fantastic setting. But one missed opportunity prevents it from being something truly special. A character driven psychological horror, The Dreadful does not necessarily need a Big Bad, but when it introduces one, it is hard not to expect more from it. Simon and Mackelly try to shake the feeling that it is Groundhog day, again.Chapter Review:Lord Commander Jon Snow and Tormund Giantsbane discuss terms for Tormund's band of roughly four thousand free folk to pass through the Wall at Castle Black. After much arguing and threats of violence, Tormund finally agrees. His band won't be happy with the concessions, including forfeiture or any valuables and 100 boys at wards of the Night's Watch. They will meet again in three days to begin the process of transitioning south of the Wall.Jon rides with Val back to Castle Black. She wants to continue helping with the relocation of the free folk. Jon takes her to meet Queen Selyse Baratheon. Selyse is happy Jon secured the deal with the wildlings, but becomes angry when she learns there was no mention of bending the knee or taking R'hllor as their god. Val says if they are made to kneel the free folk will rise, blades in hand.Outside the tower, Val comments on Princess Shireen's greyscale. She calls it grey death and says the girl is already dead. She wants her nephew Little Monster away from the girl. A shocked Jon says he'll try. Val says he'd better succeed. He owes her.Jon meets a group of Night's Watch leaders and two wildling chiefs atop the Wall. Jon explains the situation with the wildlings relocating. The men push back on every detail of Jon's plan. How will we feed them? What about the Weeper? How will you keep them at the Wall? Will you train the wards in combat? Jon's answers are unsatisfactory, and Marsh says Jon is committing treason. Simon and Mackelly throw some rice in celebration of the new couple.Chapter Review:Lord Commander Jon Snow waits with Alys Karstark as Melisandre prays to R'hllor. Jon notices that his top ranking brothers are not in attendance. Eventually, Melisandre asks who is to be wed. Jon escorts Alys to her groom Sigorn, the Magnar of Thenn. The pair say their vows, jump a ditch of fire, and it's done. As the guests make for the feast, Jon talks to Melisandre. She tells him she still sees danger in his future. Jon is skeptical. She foresaw his sister Arya arriving and it was Alys. Melisandre insists the vision was clear, it was she who misread it. She is human.Next, Jon stops at the ice cells. Cregan Karstark showed up a day after Alys. However, Jon met him south of Mole's Town, to prevent any claim of guest right. Jon tells Cregan that Alys is wed. Cregan says she was promised to him by his lord father. Jon reminds him his father Arnolf is only the castellan of Karhold. Cregan tells Jon to kill him and be labeled a kinslayer. Jon suggests Cregan Take the Black before King Stannis arrives and executes him as a traitor. Never, is Cregan's response.At the feast, Jon tells Alys to send her old men and boys to the Night's Watch rather than let them die when winter comes. She promises that House Karstark remembers. A letter arrives from Eastwatch, the ships have finally set sail for Hardhome and the stranded wildlings. After Alys drags her new husband onto the dance floor, Axell Florent takes her seat and again asks Jon about Val's whereabouts. He wants to wed the wildling princess. But strangely, it's a phenomenal film to talk about the Roman empire and the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Historian and archaeologist Dr. Steven Tuck joins in to talk everything this film gets right and wrong about Roman history. Easily one of our best episodes ever.About our guest:Steven L. Tuck is a professor of classics, who is currently head of classics at Miami University. He teaches many classics courses at Miami University, especially those relating to the arts.He received a Ph.D. in Classical Art and Archaeology from University of Michigan in 1997, and he is the author of the textbook A History of Roman Art. She and her entourage have stopped at Castle Black on their way to the Nightfort. Before escorting her and Princess Shireen to the King's Tower, Jon warns the queen about the state of the Nightfort. The queen is undeterred. On the way to their quarters, the group meets Wun Wun, the giant currently living at Castle Black. He bends the knee to the southern royalty, but his laugh frightens the party and steel is drawn.Tycho Nestoris, an emissary of the Iron Bank, is part of the queen's party. As the Lannisters are refusing to make the crown's payments, Tycho will offer the bank's backing, if Stannis agrees to shoulder the debt. Jon and Tycho come to terms on a loan from the bank that will allow the Night's Watch to buy food to survive the winter. Jon also negotiates the use of Tycho's three ships, to add to the rescue party to bring the wildlings at Hardhome south of the Wall.Later on, Jon is told that a girl has been found and is resting in maester Aemon's chambers. Jon is hopeful he'll be reunited with his sister Arya. However, the girl is too old. She turns out to be Alys Karstark. She's seeking protection from Jon from her uncles, who plan to marry her off, create an heir, then remove her from the picture. Jon avoids bloodshed and the people (and giant) are invited to return to the Wall under their protection. They do - they don't have much choice. Afterward in the yard, Jon spars with three green recruits at once, easily defeating them. Rattleshirt is unimpressed and challenges Jon to fight a real man. When the fight begins, Jon is surprised by Rattleshirt's prowess with a sword. Eventually, the wildling has to be dragged off Jon.Clydas interrupts with a letter from Barrowtown bearing the seal of House Bolton. Warden of the North Roose Bolton has returned and requires fealty from the lords of the kingdom. He also wishes for their attendance to celebrate the marriage of his son Ramsay to… Arya Stark. Mackelly and Simon fear that Stannis is not earning their loyalty.Chapter Review:Jon Snow watches as Mance Rayder is dragged to his death. The former Brother of the Night's Watch and King Beyond the Wall is a broken man desperately pleading for his life and disavowing his kingship. He's put in a cage above a pit of kindling. Melisandre brings forth the Horn of Joramun, which if blown would have brought down the Wall and let the enemy in. She burns it in the pit, and the flames reach up to Mance.Acting on Jon's orders, several of his men loose shafts to put their former brother out of his misery. As the smell of burning flesh fills the courtyard, Stannis unsheathes Lightbringer, brighter than ever, and the gate through the Wall is opened. The Free Folk are allowed through - the promise of soup and safety from the terrors of winter convince most. But some resist.Stannis has them burn weirwood branches to show their conversion from the Old Gods to R'Hllor and to take the knee before him. All this was against Jon's advice. But Stannis is more interested in loyalty than love.Later, Jon discusses with Clydas the passage that Aemon left for Jon, which describes Lightbringer's heat. Stannis' sword is cold. We covered over fifty movies that were released in 2024. Naturally, some were better than others. Unfortunately, when you cover as much stuff as we did, some things end up being bad. As in, REALLY bad. Over the next two weeks, we are going to talk about the films from 2024 that stood out the most to us. First things first, we are messing with the worst.It's not often that movies make us mad. Bored or frustrated, but actual anger? That just does not happen. Especially when you deal with indie cinema as much as we do. We understand that budgets will not be as high, there are not as many resources, and creativity is not limited to the script. Indie films get a pass from us when it comes to special effects, limited locations, and at times, the acting.But there are times when a movie will leave us with a very bad impression. (Blake is still fuming over Soft & Quiet.) This year, we covered two of the most infuriating films we have ever seen. One of them seemed like it was an intentional slap to the faces of anyone who has ever claimed to like horror movies. It made a point of making things very personal. The other was a documentary that stubbornly refused to back up any of its claims, had nothing interesting to say, and even lied to the audience.Thankfully, there were films that managed to just simply be bad. We discuss a thematic trilogy that was a great idea in theory, a supposed body horror movie that is more confusing than captivating, and a script that sounds like it was written by an edgy fifteen year old.
