Jon tells Stannis that only Mance Rayder can bind the wildlings to the king. Stannis knows but still can't spare the man's life. He is an oathbreaker. Send us a textJaime won Riverrun but lost the Blackfish. He confirms that Jeyne Westerling is not pregnant with Robb Stark's child and gives Sybell her rewards for her scheming as well as a piece of his mind. He learns that Ryman Frey is dead and that Cersei is in trouble. Neither concern him much, as he ignores Cersei's plea for help. Simon and Mackelly set their quills down.Chapter Review:Jaime Lannister discovers that during the change of hands of Riverrun Brynden Blackfish Tully has gone missing. A well-placed threat to Edmure Tully reveals the truth. The Blackfish swam away in the night. All search parties have come up empty to this point. He meets with Sybell and Jeyne Westerling. Jeyne is still in mourning over the death of her husband King Robb and isn't afraid to let Jaime see it. On the other hand, Sybell speaks of her role in Robb's death and preventing Jeyne from getting pregnant. She wants good marriages for her children in return, as promised by Tywin. Jaime agrees, but also tells her to stay out of his way until she leaves for the west.He crosses the Tumblestone and meets with Edwyn Frey and Walder Rivers. They inform him that Edwyn's father Ryman was hanged on his way back to the Twins. Edwyn thinks his brother Black Walder is responsible. Jaime isn't broken up about it and notices Edwyn's eyes are dry too.One night he dreams of his mother. She says Tywin wanted him to be a great knight and Cersei a queen. Jaime says they both met those goals, but his mother only sheds a tear. Jaime wakes to snow falling on Riverrun. With it, the hope for one more harvest is gone. Send us a textJaime takes control of the debacle that is the siege of Riverrun. He gets only scorn from the Blackfish, but he makes Edmure Tully an offer that would be hard to refuse. Simon and Mackelly consider the intestinal fortitude of the tormented Lord of Riverrun.Chapter Review:Jaime parlays with Brynden Blackfish Tully. He makes zero progress. The older man is resigned to Edmure's death, accuses Jaime of oathbreaking and cowardice, and won't believe Jaime's offer of pardons for all within.Jaime calls a war council that is closer to a war. All parties bring their high-horses and nobody budges an inch. The enmity within the besiegers camp is greater than that between the besiegers and the besieged. He gives up, dismisses Ryman Frey back to the Twins for his incompetence and elevates Ryman's son Edwyn to head the Frey contingent. He frees Edmure from his torment and brings him back to be bathed and fed. The kindness comes with an offer and a threat. Edmure will be returned to Riverrun. If he then surrenders the castle the original offer remains - all will be spared. But if he doesn't, everyone inside will die and Edmure's soon-to-be-born baby will be trebucheted over the walls. Tully is left to consider these options as a singer plays the Rains of Castermere.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Jamie Lannister - Twin and lover to Cersei. Lord Commander of the Kingsguard. Biological father of King Tommen.Daven Lannister - Son of Stafford Lannister (the late Stafford was Tywin's cousin). Send us a textJaime arrives at Riverrun hopeful of ending the siege without breaking his oath to Catelyn (not to take up arms against the Tullys). He gets some home-truths from his aunt Genna. Simon and Mackelly weigh up the impact.Chapter Review:Jaime Lannister arrives at Riverrun and meets with his cousin Daven Lannister, the new Warden of the West. They have a good rapport. The younger man is modest about his new-found honors, and thinks that his father's cousin Kevan should have been made Warden of the West. Jaime doesn't disagree. Devan has had it with the Freys. Their cruelty and belligerence are doing nothing to help end this siege.Jaime is concerned that so few Riverlands houses are represented. They may have bent the knee but their hearts are clearly not in it. He intends to parley with Brynden Blackfish Tully, who holds Riverrun but first meets with his Aunt Genna and her husband Emmon Frey, to whom Riverrun is promised.Emmon whines about the damage to his new castle. Genna catches up on family news before concluding they should have been given Darry instead. She explains her loyalty to her big brother Tywin, and while expressing her fondness for Jaime, confesses that Tyrion was the child most like his father. But when she told Tywin that, it was met by half a year of silence. Characters/Places/Names/Events:Jamie Lannister - Twin and lover to Cersei. Lord Commander of the Kingsguard. Key positions include the Master of the Administratum, overseeing the bureaucratic and administrative apparatus; the Fabricator-General of the Adeptus Mechanicus, representing the tech-priests of Mars; the Inquisitorial Representative, ensuring the interests of the Inquisition; the Grand Provost Marshal, head of the Adeptus Arbites for law enforcement and internal security; the Master of the Astronomican, managing the psychic beacon essential for warp travel; and the Ecclesiarch, leader of the Adeptus Ministorum, the state church.During the Horus Heresy, the High Lords, then known as the Council of Terra, played a crucial role in defending the Imperium. They coordinated efforts against Horus' forces, managing resources, military campaigns, and the strategic defense of Terra itself. Key figures like Malcador the Sigillite, the Emperor's regent and the first Lord of the Council, were instrumental during this period. In the modern era, the High Lords maintain significant influence. The return of Roboute Guilliman, Primarch of the Ultramarines, introduced new dynamics, with Guilliman both opposing and aiding the High Lords. His reforms and his role as Lord Commander of the Imperium led to significant changes, including purges and reorganization efforts to streamline governance and military response. The High Lords of Terra are crucial to Warhammer 40,000 lore, embodying the complexities and challenges of ruling a galaxy-spanning empire. Jon decides that he will accept Stannis' offer and become Lord of Winterfell. But at that moment Ghost returns, reminding him of his belief in the old gods and his outsider status to the Starks. He joins his brothers for the vote for the new Lord Commander of the Night's Watch and is surprised as anyone when he wins. Mackelly and Simon start drawing up a transition team.Chapter Review:Jon Snow spars in the yard of Castle Black with Iron Emmett. While there he overhears Alliser Thorne, Bowen Marsh and a reluctant Orwell Yarwyck plotting to install Janos Slynt as Lord Commander. Jon heads north of Wall to consider Stannis' offer of legitimacy, Winterfell, and Val's hand in marriage. He admits to himself that it is all he ever wanted and that he'll give up his vows and his gods for it. At that moment Ghost returns, his red eyes and white fur redolent of a weirwood. They reunite and Jon takes it as a sign that his decision was wrong. He joins his brothers in the latest round of voting for the Lord Commandership. Stannis has promised to keep them sequestered until they have made a choice. Edd has put forward Jon's name. Sam and the men vying for Lord Commander of the Night's Watch attend an audience with King Stannis. Stannis wants a Lord Commander chosen tonight. Sam hatches a plan to consolidate the votes between the leading contenders. Both men agree a new candidate might suffice. Sam knows just the guy. Simon and Mackelly pick up what he's putting down.Chapter Review:Samwell Tarly assists Maester Aemon to a summons by King Stannis Baratheon. They are accompanied by the current vote-getters for Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. King Stannis has had enough of waiting for the brothers to agree on a leader. He wants this wrapped up today. When Janos Slynt suggests King Stannis offer guidance to the brothers, Stannis says anybody but Janos should suffice.King Stannis has other needs from the Night's Watch, and the Lord Commander should have a say in the matter. He wants the Gift and the abandoned castles. The brothers don't take this news well. Stannis says he needs to rebuild the castles to garrison a force to stop the Others' attack. Before leaving, Maester Aemon asks to “see” Lightbringer. Sam describes the beautifully glowing sword to the blind maester. Afterward, Aemon finds it odd the sword gave off no heat. Later, Sam hatches a plan to stop Slynt from being voted Lord Commander. He asks Cotter Pyke to back Ser Deny Mallister. Pyke has no interest. Sam asks Ser Denys to back Pyke. Again, no interest. Sam suggests a different candidate. To Ser Denys he touts the mystery brother as well-educated, from old blood, castle trained, and highly trusted. To Pyke he describes the man as a good fighter but a bastard. Sam and Gilly have made to Castle Black. Gilly has taken on a second baby to feed. Sam has a crafty idea to ensure Gilly and son are cared for. Janos Slynt is making waves in the vote for Lord Commander. Mackelly and Simon consider voter fraud to keep Slynt out of the top spot.Chapter Review:Samwell Tarly, Gilly, and Gilly's baby have finally made it to Castle Black. Gilly has begun feeding Mance and Dalla's newborn son. Dalla's sister Val has heard that Melasandre plans to burn Mance and asks that he be allowed to see his son first. Jon Snow says he'll ask.Later, Jon asks Sam about his feelings for Gilly. Sam says he knows there's no future for them but tells Jon of a plan to send Gilly and the baby to Sam's mother at Horn Hill. Sam will lie and say that the boy is his. Jon thinks it could work, but it depends on the type of man the boy grows up to be. It is killing Sam to keep a secret from Jon. Sam knows that Bran is alive but swore multiple times not to reveal it, and he holds true to his word. That night the men vote on a new Lord Commander. Nobody is close to the two-thirds vote necessary to win. Denys Mallister and Cotter Pyke are the front-runners but Janos Slynt continues to climb in the voting. Sam knows that if Mallister and Pyke could agree on only one of the men running, they'd be very close to having the numbers. Daenerys is sailing the Summer Sea watching her dragons grow. She receives ambiguous reports of the kind of men her father and eldest brother were, advice from Ser Jorah as to her next move, and possibly unwanted advances from Mormont. Simon and Mackelly weigh up the suitors and their suits.Chapter Review:Daenerys Targaryen watches her dragons play above the three ships that bear her west towards Pentos, slowly. The dragons are growing, but remain more of a liability than an asset. In her honor, the three ships have been renamed for dragons of Aegon the Conqueror and his sister wives: Balerion, Meraxes, and Vhagar.Arstan Whitebeard provides some dragon-lore from his time in King's Landing where he knew both her father and her brother Rhaegar. He treads carefully, but it's not hard to see his true feelings about King Aerys. And unlike most people, he has a nuanced view of Rhaegar. “Able above all else” is not the most ringing endorsement.Ser Jorah warns her to beware of Arstan - something's not right about him. But Dany has too few friends to doubt those who've saved her life. Ser Jorah proposes a plan to both test Illyrio Mopatis' loyalty to Dany, and to ensure it. They'll redirect for Astapor, sell all Mopatis' goods on the ships, and use that money to buy an army of Unsullied - the finest warriors in Essos - with whom they'll march to Pentos.Dany likes the plan and Ser Jorah celebrates by kissing her unbidden. A tense moment ensues.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Daenerys Targaryen - Last remaining descendent of the royal Targaryen line, Stormborn, Mother of Dragons, claimant to the Iron Throne of Westeros.Viserion, Rhaegal, and Drogon - Daenerys' dragons. We're back with another episode of Talkin' Thrones, and its a big one today, Season 6, Episode 4, "Book of the Stranger." It can become easy to forget about some of the smaller moments that help set up for the larger, more memorable moments like Battle of the Bastards, or even something like the Door next episode, but its episodes like these that are so crucial, because they help to directly set up for a lot of the bigger moments to come. Jon has just completed his final act as Lord Commander of the Night's Watch and is about to leave when the first major reunion happens, with Sansa finally arriving at the Wall, marking the first Stark reunion since the pilot. Jon is not yet ready to emerge into the real world, but Sansa makes him see sense once Jon receives a threatening letter from Ramsay. At Winterfell, Osha attempts to trick Ramsay as she once did Theon, but is unable to and pays dearly for it. In King's Landing, Cersei learns a crucial detail and is able to form an alliance with Olenna, while the High Sparrow continues to play his games with Margaery & Tommen. Theon arrives home for the first time in years to learn of his father's death and his sister's attempts for the Throne. In Meereen, Tyrion negotiates a peace treaty with the slavers to less than satisfactory reactions. Littlefinger plots his next move after arriving back in the Eyrie. It all ends with a brilliant fireshow, with Daenerys carrying out her revenge plot against the Khals and showing the Dothraki why they should follow her. Another week, another episode in the wind down phase of Talkin' Thrones, Season 6, Episode 3, entitled "Oathbreaker," a reverse of a previous Season 4 episode, only with a much different context behind it. Despite this still being an action season, we're finding that Season 6 is mirroring Season 5 a little bit more than we would have liked, considering that we're getting into the phase of set up/spinning our wheels until the last two episodes, leaving a lot of room on the table for some actually juicy scenes. We start by addressing a booboo that Professor Pat made last week, mistakenly thinking that Bran seeing his father's fight with Arthur Dayne happened in last week's episode, when it really happened in this episode. Cersei & Jaime attempt to get the attention of the other members of the Small Council, but they ignore them, while the High Sparrow continues his games with Margaery & Tommen. Dany is finally brought back to Vaes Dothrak, and discovers what her fate was originally supposed to be. We also check in briefly with Sam & Gilly, still on their way south to Oldtown. In Braavos, Arya continues to train with sticks & faces, and eventually is able to get her eyesight back. In Meereen, Varys interrogates the woman who was assisting the Sons of the Harpy and discovers that (shocker) the Slave Masters of Astapor, Yunkai & Volantis are bankrolling the Sons. God can we be done with Meereen. At Winterfell, Ramsay shores up his alliances, with the Umbers turning on their lifelong oath to the Starks by presenting Ramsay with a gift. It all ends with the next gangbuster moment, with Jon, freshly back from the dead and now being seen as a god by the Wildlings, executing Alliser Thorne and the rest of the Watch mutineers, including Olly, before ultimately stating that his watch is ended and abandoning the position of Lord Commander. We're at the point of the show where Dom's problems really start to show with Season 5, Episode 3 "High Sparrow." As the title suggests, this episode is the introduction of the titular High Sparrow, the leader of the religious fanatical group known as the sparrows makes his appearance portrayed by Jonathan Pryce. The High Sparrow represents a very confusing element that comes to play in the later seasons, as the ideas behind the motivation of his character and his use of religious zealotism as a means of exacting some sort of philosophical revenge against the high lords for their destruction of the realm and plight of the commoners, but because of Benioff & Weiss' callous leap frogging over story logic points in order to reach their conclusion, it comes off as half baked like a majority of the second half of the show. Cersei realizes that Margaery is already making moves against her and attempts to retaliate by recruiting the High Sparrow to her side. Jon is faced with his first major decision as Lord Commander, Arya learns more about the House of Black & White, Littlefinger brings Sansa home, Brienne informs Podrick of her vow and Tyrion is kidnapped by an unlikely figure on his road to Daenerys. We're into the final run of the show with Season 5 Episode 2, "The House of Black & White." This is what I like to call the plot episode, in that this is an episode where a WHOLE lot of plot happens. We get a lot of characters arriving at their new destinations they set out for, characters in transtit, characters starting out new journeys. Dom breaks down even more where they're deviating from the books, what works and what doesn't. Arya finally arrives at the House of Black & White in Braavos, only to be turned away. Jon is elected new Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. Cersei begins consolidating power in King's Landing, and already faces rejection. Jaime heads out on a new mission. Tyrion & Varys talk on the road to Meereen. Daenerys makes a fatal mistake as leader. Brienne has a serious case of deja vu. Daenerys fails to convince any of the grandees of Qarth to fund her plans to invade Westeros. Factions vye for her favor, but all seem bent on ownership of her dragons. She decides that it's time to see the warlocks. Mackelly and Simon survey her options. Chapter Review: Daenerys Targaryen rides in Xaro Xhoan Daxos' palanquin having been rebuffed by the Pureborn of Qarth. Her bribes and supplications were for nothing. She was a novelty to them and no more. He reiterates his offer to marry her and provide all that she will ever need. Qarth custom is that married couples maintain their own property, so she would not have to share her dragons. However, Dany thinks he's more interested in the young male servants that populate his house. They stop to watch a firemage perform amazing tricks, and Dany is approached by Quaithe. The shadowbinder explains that the firemage's powers have skyrocketed since Dany arrived. The dragons amplify magic. Quaithe again warns Dany that nobody is to be trusted, that all want her dragons for themselves, and that she should go east to Asshai to find the truth. Later, Ser Jorah tells Dany the one fact that Xaro is concealing. On their wedding day, each can ask the other for a gift that cannot be denied. One of her dragons would surely be forfeit. They conclude that they're not getting anywhere, but Dany cannot understand why the comet led them to Qarth if not to provide them with soldiers and ships. They decide their next, and last, stop in Qarth will be with Pyat Pree and the warlocks. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Daenerys Targaryen - Daughter of King Aerys. Widow of Khal Drogo. Sam is terrified of the commander, but needs to find a bit of courage as he'll be joining the great ranging. Sansa attends King Joffrey's first court session. It's everything she never dreamed of. Janos Slynt gets a meteoric promotion, Ser Barristan Selmy gets similarly precipitous demotion. And Sansa begs for her father's life. Despite a chorus of naysayers, good King Joffrey is moved to mercy. The boys cast a skeptical eye over the whole thing. Chapter Review: Sansa Stark enters the throne room and is treated as a leper by all. Even drunken Ser Dontos Hollard stifles his greeting when reminded of who she is. No matter, she's on a mission. Pycelle reads out a list of people who are expected to come to King's Landing to pledge fealty to the new King. It's pretty much everyone in Westeros. Arya is on the list - which gives Sansa hope that her sister might have escaped. Janos Slynt is given the Lordship of Harrenhal and a seat on the Small Council. Cersei is named regent. Tywin Lannister is named Hand of the King. Barristan Selmy is then unceremoniously fired from his role as Lord Commander of the Kingsguard. He storms out muttering mutinous words about Stannis' claim to the throne. Sansa's moment arrives. She begs forgiveness for her father. She puts his lack of judgement down to the milk of the poppy he was taking for his broken leg. The Small Council advise the King to harden his heart, but King Joffrey claims to be moved by Sansa's sweet words. Provided that Lord Stark retracts his prior accusations and pledge fealty, there will be mercy. Characters/Places/Names/Events: King Joffrey Baratheon - bastard son of Jaime Lannister and his twin sister Queen Cersei Lannister. Currently King Joffrey Baratheon First of His Name. Queen Cersei Lannister - Widow of King Robert Baratheon, twin sister of Ser Jamie Lannister. Mother of King Joffrey Baratheon. Janos Slynt - Commander of the City Watch (AKA Gold Cloaks), the police force of King's Landing. Now elevated to Lord of Harrenhal and given a seat on the Small Council. Ser Barristan Selmy - Ousted Lord Commander of the Kingsguard. Older but still deadly with a sword or a lance. Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish - Master of Coin, member of the Small Council, and childhood friend to Catelyn Tully. Grand Maester Pycelle - Elderly grand maester of the Seven Kingdoms. Fellow member of the king's Small Council. Lord Varys - The Spider. Eunuch and Master of Whispers. Sansa Stark - Eldest daughter of Lord Eddard Stark and Catelyn Tully. The boys discuss Jon's failings. Chapter Review: Jon, Sam, and the senior members of the Night's Watch find the bodies that Ghost discovered. They are rangers from Benjen Stark's party. Sam goes all CSI: They seem to have been dead a while, but they haven't rotted. Mormont is troubled and wants Maester Aemon to examine them, despite the misgivings of some of the men. When they return to Castle Black, a raven has brought news of Robert's death and Eddard Stark's treason. Ser Alliser mock's Jon as not only a bastard but the bastard-son of a traitor. Jon loses his temper and his liberty. But in the night, Ghost wakes Jon. Something is amiss. For he has powerful foes not only within the Watch but also beyond, in the land of the creatures of ice.And from all corners, bitter conflicts soon reignite, intimate betrayals are perpetrated, and a grand cast of outlaws and priests, soldiers and skinchangers, nobles and slaves, will face seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Some will fail, others will grow in the strength of darkness. But in a time of rising restlessness, the tides of destiny and politics will lead inevitably to the greatest dance of all.

The Cast Beyond the Wall: A House of the Dragon Podcast

The Cast Beyond the Wall returns with more Westerosi recapping goodness this week as they give us the breakdown of season 6 episode 3, Oathbreaker. This  Bran's latest dream sequence, Cersei's latest scheme against the Tyrells, and Arya Stark's latest training montage. This week may be lighter on shocking twists and turns, but that doesn't keep it from delivering the old school scheming and verbal sparring that made Game of Thrones a household name. This week has us delving even further down the R+L=J rabbit hole as Caleb, Austin, and Daniel discuss the highly anticipated battle between Ned Stark and Arthur Dayne. Just before getting to the real meat and potatoes of the flashback, Max von Sydow's Three-Eyed Raven swoops in to remove Bran from the greater mystery of the past.  The rest of Westeros continues to be in a state of decay as King Tommen continues to be the world's biggest pushover, the small council is divided between Lannister and Tyrell, and the North's leadership is slowly crumbling to the feet of Ramsey Bolton. This week continues to be dialog driven set up with a few surprises including the Jon Snow's final decision as the the Lord Commander of the Night's Watch.  Essos continues to be a real snooze fest with Arya's training spinning its wheels while Daenerys continues to retread her old narrative stomping grounds.  The show continues to move at a rapid pace and the gang here at The Cast Beyond the Wall are excited to lay out their favorite theories and predictions. The Cast Beyond the Wall: A House of the Dragon Podcast

This week's episode of Game of Thrones may not have quite packed the same level of action that we've become used to, but “Kill the Boy” didn't disappoint in its character drama and we're ready to dive right into all of it. On this installment of The Cast Beyond the Wall, we're joined by special guests Dalton Stuart and Jessica Martin to discuss all of the latest developments in the north side of Westeros. We were all shocked by the passing of Ser Barristan after last week's cliffhanger and we try to decide whether or not showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss gave the understated fan favorite his due. In the fallout of his death, Daenerys makes a vengeful decision to begin burning the former slave owners alive. It may not be one of the most diplomatic solutions, but we chime in with our thoughts on how well her moves will play with the rest of Mereen. This season of Game of Thrones continues to give Stannis knock out moments and this week was no exception. The self-declared king continues to win us over with his respectable decisions and great one on one talks with all of our favorite characters. Before finally departing the wall, Stannis has a few last words with Jon Snow and Samwell Tarly. After decapitating the despicable Janos Slynt a couple of episodes back, Jon continues to make controversial moves in his role as Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. We take a closer look at his polarizing decision to work with the wildlings and set the likes of Ollie against him. The family drama in Winterfell began to ramp up this week as well now that Sansa is starting to settle into her old home. After years of being apart, she is finally reunited with Theon and the results are truly twisted. There's certainly a lot to discuss this week and as always, we break it all down in our lengthy and in-depth discussion. The Cast Beyond the Wall: A House of the Dragon Podcast

High Sparrow was the most eventful Game of Thrones episode so far this season and The Cast Beyond the Wall is back to break down some of the most shocking moments. High Sparrow brought us one of Jon Snow's most character defining moments yet as he put Janos Slynt's head to on the chopping block. His first act as Lord Commander of the Night's Watch was undoubtedly a bold one we've been waiting to talk about. Is Jon laying down the law or planting the seeds of betrayal among his men?  The north was chocked full of shocking twists, but none of them as surprising as Sansa's planned betrothal to known sociopath Ramsey Bolton. What does this mean for the last known Stark and Littlefinger's grand masterplan? Daniel, Austin, and I talk all of the possible moves and the brilliance of the strategy to take Westeros. In what seems like the first time in Game of Thrones history, the series featured a wedding going as planned. Margery has finally taken the claim to power in King's Landing and Cersei isn't taking it well. What exactly does her alliance with the High Sparrow mean in her plot to undermind Margery?  This week was full of classic Game of Thrones moments and we've got each and every moment covered in our glorious pop culture filled discussion. Game of Thrones returned for another one of its finest hours packed with dragons, faceless men, and even the beginnings of a slave uprising. Join us on The Cast Beyond the Wall as we delve into the trickiest moral dilemmas The House of Black and White had to offer.  The latest episode finally brought us up to speed with Arya as she arrived in the long talked about city of Braavos. After years of talk, she finally lands at the doorstep of the faceless men's lair. On the other side of the world, we finally get our first look at Dorne and Austin, Daniel, and I discuss whether or not it lived up to Oberyn's hype. The House of Black and White was an episode of tough decisions as Daenerys wrestled with her biggest challenge yet and Jon was forced to choose between the spot as Lord Commander of the Night's Watch or the next King in the North. We argue the merits of these big decisions and how they will shape the episodes ahead. The season opener of Game of Thrones may have gotten off to a slow start, but The House of Black and White really kicks things into high gear. Don't miss it!
