Histamine might be the culprit. Determining the cause of digestive and gut health issues can be complex. Though many know of disorders like leaky gut, GERD, and IBS, a lesser known gut disruptor is histamine intolerance. Histamine is a compound released by immune cells and is very important to the immune system and estrogen production. However, having too much histamine can cause digestive cramps, loose stools, urgent bowel movements, and flushing skin or hives. An increase in patients with histamine intolerance and similar gut issues is caused by a number of factors: * Today, people aren’t eating enough vegetables or enough variety of vegetables. * People are eating too much processed food that’s high in sugar and low in fiber. * Humans no longer ferment foods regularly, which used to be a regular practice in the winter. * Everyone is exposed to medications, and there is more self-prescribing and self-diagnosing than ever before. * More toxic substances are present in everyday household items like makeup and cleaning supplies. * Americans are generally undernourished because diets lack the proper vitamins and minerals. Fortunately, histamine intolerance can be managed with a low-histamine diet. Listen as Nour Zibdeh joins Dr. Taz to discuss histamine intolerance.

Nour Zibdeh, RDN, is a nutritionist who's passionate about helping patients use food to improve gut health. Originally from Jordan, Zibdeh came to the states when she was 20 to pursue her nutrition degree—but it wasn't until she healed her own headaches, bloating, and brain fog using an elimination diet that she realized just how important the gut really is. "If you don't have a gut that's working, you're really not benefiting from anything," Zibdeh says, adding that chronic fatigue, skin issues, anxiety and depression, and congestion can all be symptoms of underlying food sensitivities. It's difficult to say how many Americans are currently living with some sort of gut issue since they so often go unreported, but Zibdeh guesses it's over 40%. Tune into this jam-packed episode to learn more about Zibdeh's food philosophy and get her take on how going Keto, eating a low-histamine diet, and intermittent fasting actually affect the gut. Over the course of the hour, she also dives into how to talk to your doctor if you suspect you have a gut health issue, how to get your kids to eat gut-healing foods, and how the shape of your poop can indicate the state of your digestion.
