Episode #529: What Really Drives Scale – Purpose or People?

ScaleUpRadio's podcast

This week on ScaleUp Radio, we explore two different but equally powerful approaches to scaling a business. One focuses on building a community that challenges social perceptions, while the other focuses on guiding people through change and transformation. Tariq Kazemi, Co-founder and CEO of Bldbro, shares how his passion project became a £3 million skincare brand built around confidence and authenticity. What started as an online community for bald men has become a movement that celebrates individuality and self-acceptance. Uzma Aitqad, Founder of Magna People Change Consulting, helps organisations navigate digital and cultural change by focusing on people, not just process. With a background in engineering and a master's in organisational change management, she brings a unique perspective to how leaders can make transformation stick. Together, they explore the balance between purpose and people – showing that successful scaling depends on both.   Meet the Guests Tariq Kazemi – The Community Builder Bldbro was founded to change the narrative around baldness. Tariq and his two co-founders built a brand rooted in authenticity and confidence. Guided by the belief that healthy conflict leads to better decisions, the trio created a business culture that encourages open debate and collective ownership. From choosing sustainable aluminium packaging over cheaper plastic to learning sophisticated growth metrics such as Lifetime Value and Customer Acquisition Cost, Tariq's story is one of purpose meeting performance. Uzma Aitqad – The Change Catalyst Uzma founded Magna People Change Consulting to address one of the biggest causes of failure in transformation: people and culture. She believes 70% of change initiatives fail because organisations focus on systems, not adoption. Her approach combines practical frameworks with empathy, helping leaders move from “doers” to influencers who inspire engagement. For Uzma, success means ensuring every change is understood, embraced and sustained.   Key Lessons for Business Owners Mission before product – purpose drives growth. Culture determines success – people need to believe in the vision. Healthy conflict creates better decisions. Adoption is the measure of real change. Structure and consistency enable sustainable scale.   Community or Culture – The Real Advantage Tariq demonstrates how authenticity and purpose can build powerful customer loyalty. Uzma shows that without internal engagement, even the best strategy will struggle to succeed. Their journeys highlight that scaling a business is about balance – between external brand identity and internal leadership strength.   Final Thoughts Tariq and Uzma remind us that scaling is both a mindset and a mission. Success is not just about what you build, but who grows with you along the way.

In this episode of ScaleUp Radio, we dive into one of the most underestimated – and most essential – elements of successful business growth: change management. Our guest, Uzma Aitqad, brings over 25 years of experience in the corporate world and a deep understanding of organisational change. As the founder of Magna People Change Consulting, she now helps SMEs navigate complex digital transformations by focusing on people, not just process. The episode unfolds in three parts: Uzma's journey from electronics engineering to change consultancy, and the founding of Magna. Her practical insights into scaling challenges, the human barriers to change, and why 70% of change initiatives fail. A rapid-fire round covering Uzma's favourite resources, leadership tips, and more.   The one key thing: Successful change is not about technology – it's about people. If your team isn't on board, the transformation won't stick. Whether you're an SME founder struggling to let go of control, or a leader trying to build agility into your team, this episode is full of practical strategies to help you scale with confidence. In Redefining the Immigrant South: Indian and Pakistani Immigration to Houston During the Cold War (University of North Carolina Press), Uzma Quraishi (Sam Houston State University) follows the Cold War-era journeys of South Asian international students from U.S. Information Service reading rooms in India and Pakistan, to the halls of the University of Houston, to the suburban subdivisions of Alief and Sugar Land. This student migration between 1960 and 1980 shows how public diplomacy programs overseas catalyzed the arrival of highly educated, middle-class Asians in the U.S. before the Hart-Celler Act of 1965. Drawing on archival documents, GIS data, and oral interviews, Quraishi investigates how Indian and Pakistani immigrants forged an “interethnic” identity in Houston and located themselves—both socially and geographically—in the midst of a booming yet segregated Sunbelt city. She conceptualizes their mobility as “brown flight,” a process that simultaneously strengthened ethnic bonds even as it reinforced racial and class barriers. By exploring the links between international and local scales, Redefining the Immigrant South will interest scholars from many fields, including Asian American history; histories of the U.S. South, immigration, and U.S. foreign relations; and sub/urban studies. The curable disease that kills someone every 20 seconds: Tuberculosis (ft. John Green)

Every year, tuberculosis claims over a million lives despite being curable. Tuberculosis or TB is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. About 5–10% of people infected with TB will eventually get symptoms. In the early stages a TB infection might cause chest pain, a cough, night sweats, and loss of appetite. But eventually it could create holes in the lungs and cause you to cough up blood. And of course, TB can be deadly. In this episode of Tiny Matters, Sam and Deboki talk with TB researcher Uzma Khan as well as John Green, the author of books including The Anthropocene Reviewed, Paper Towns, The Fault in Our Stars, and Turtles All the Way Down. John is also the co-creator of Crash Course and one half of the vlogbrothers — the other half being his brother Hank Green, who Deboki and Sam chatted with on the show last year. Although he's best known as an author and YouTuber, last summer John made headlines for something else: fighting for more equitable access to tuberculosis treatments, particularly bedaquiline, an incredibly effective and essential medicine for patients with drug-resistant tuberculosis. In this episode, Sam and Deboki cover the science and history of this devastating yet treatable disease, the recent public pressure on companies that is leading to increased treatment and testing access, and clinical trials that make John and Uzma hopeful that one day this humanity-plaguing disease could be gone. If you'd like to learn more, go to tbfighters.org. You can also subscribe to John's newsletter: tbfighters.org/newsletter.  We have a YouTube channel! Full-length audio episodes can be found here. When your world turns upside down after your child's autism diagnosis, where do you turn? Uzma's compelling journey as a certified autism specialist and parent unfolds in our latest podcast episode, where she candidly shares the heartaches and triumphs of raising a child on the spectrum. Her story is a beacon for parents wading through the complexities of early signs, diagnosis, and the maze of professional support—or the lack thereof. Uzma's insistence on clear, jargon-free communication provides comfort and direction, offering a lifeline to those feeling adrift in a sea of uncertainty.Embracing neurodiversity isn't just a concept; it's a transformative movement, and Uzma is at the forefront, coaching families and advising corporations on the value each unique mind brings to the table. One success story that stands out is of a 27-year-old who learned the dance of two-way communication, a testament to the potential within everyone waiting to be unlocked. The conversation also illuminates the gender disparities in autism diagnosis, challenging us to redefine our perceptions and support mechanisms. For those seeking guidance or yearning to contribute to the mission of understanding autism, Uzma opens the channels of connection through Instagram (@CoachingwithUzma) and LinkedIn. This episode is not just about sharing knowledge; it's an invitation to join a community where isolation dissipates and acceptance grows.  To our listeners and anyone grappling with similar experiences, reach out, share your story, and help us cultivate a world that celebrates neurodiversity in all its forms.https://tonymantor.comhttps://Facebook.com/tonymantorhttps://instagram.com/tonymantorhttps://twitter.com/tonymantorhttps://youtube.com/tonymantormusicintro/outro music bed written by T. Ask yourself how news coverage would have been different, and HAS been different for non-Muslims suspects. When do Muslim Americans hold their collective breaths and why? And how is it all the same now?Our expectations from media coverage must be higher and the biases of news coverage, because it endangers affected people, must be held to account., News coverage, and now social media coverage, result in perpetual Muslim grief.  Fahd Al Binali of IQRA Network joins us today to discuss his role in creating the platform to teach Quran and Islamic studies without children hating either or both. His specific interest in gearing education toward Western audiences is especially important because it focuses on application of these principles in students' lives. This requires innovatively training and treating instructors in an organized way with accountability on all sides. IQRA fosters the relationship between teachers and students instead of the fear and dread that a lot of us experienced when learning Quran. We certainly didn't have teachers with such integral preparation to engage Muslim American kids in our childhoods.  Uzma's experience with the platform has been exemplary and her son is busily memorizing Juz ‘Amma, angry at her for not doing so herself. IQRA's created a monster! You've probably caught yourself indulging after a workout or a game or a stretch of healthy eating. Maybe it was a pint or two after a soccer game or an extra piece of cheesecake after a vigorous hike. These indulgences are easier to justify after a healthy activity. Ironically, though, these indulgences can undo some of your hard work. So why do we tend to behave this way? In this episode of Choiceology withKaty Milkman, a look at how we justify our decisions based on previous behavior.Alfred Nobel was a very successful inventor and businessman. His invention of dynamite transformed industry and saved lives by reducing the use of dangerously unstable nitroglycerin. But his reputation suffered as he became associated with some of the negative uses of his creation. Gustav Källstrand is the senior curator at the Nobel Prize Museum in Stockholm, Sweden. He tells the story of how Alfred Nobel accidentally read his own obituary (spoiler: it was not a positive story) and the efforts Nobel undertook to rescue his reputation.Next, Uzma Khan joins Katy to explain why people use "good" behavior to justify "bad" behavior, and vice versa. She discusses her research into this compensating behavior and how it impacts everything from health to consumer choice to charitable giving.Uzma Khan is an associate professor of marketing at the University of Miami. Finally, Katy explains how this phenomenon relates to what Nobel laureate Richard Thaler calls mental accounting, where we tend to place time and money (and in this case morality and self-control) into accounts, even though they are fungible resources. Choiceology is an original podcast from Charles Schwab.
