Not only did I have a blast with the boys, but we even ended up at the casino together afterward in the hopes of great wins. I also spent a few minutes talking about the World Series and the insane moment that happened in last night's game when a Yankees fan tried to pull a ball out of Mookie Betts' hand.Turning the podcast to the Oilers, I had to start with the news that Connor McDavid will be out of Edmonton's lineup for the next 2-3 weeks with an ankle injury. While that timeline isn't as bad as it could have been for our captain, the Oilers will need a bunch of players to step up in his absence. I mean, if Monday's game against the Blue Jackets is any indication of what the team will look like without their captain, then we are in a world of trouble.Finally, I wrapped up this quick episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about other fanbases cheering for injuries before wrapping up the show with another round of voicemails. The inbox was quieter again this week, but that didn't mean you fine folks didn't still make me laugh anyway. The Oilers racked up a pair of disappointing losses against the Stars and Hurricanes, and the mood around Oil Country is back in the sewer. Is there hope? Are we doomed? Let's talk about it in this week's episode of Better Lait Than Never.I kicked off this week's episode of BLTN by wondering aloud how it's possible that the Oilers 2024-25 season feels nearly identical to the disastrous start from a year ago. At 2-4-1 through seven games, it's not like the Oilers are down and out or anything like that, but I'm genuinely puzzled that a team this talented can allow this slow start to happen again.Digging into what's gone wrong, I started the news by looking at the losses against Dallas and Carolina. Both of those games were well within reach for our boys, but the lack of goal-scoring is really making it difficult for the team to gain any traction. That said, I also feel like it's a matter of time before Edmonton's luck starts to turn and pucks start going in the net, but it's been painful watching them struggle to get there.Making matters worse, some of our former friends are finding success in new markets while their old stomping grounds continue to struggle offensively. So, even though many of us believe the Oilers will turn things around, this early part of the season has been a tough pill to swallow. As the losses continue to pile up, the fanbase keeps getting more and more restless and louder about voicing their displeasure.Finally, I wrapped up this quick episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about the deja-vu feelings we're all working through before wrapping up the show with another round of voicemails. It wouldn't be a Monday afternoon without a fresh episode of Real Life to massage your earholes and help you get through the rest of the work week.The guys kicked off the Monday episode of Real Life with a conversation about the brand-new Nation Beer and how we'll have some upcoming watch-along events at Odd Company in the coming weeks. If you're looking for an opportunity to get together, we'll have some dads on the calendar coming very soon.Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, the guys discussed Saturday's loss to the Stars and how, given how well the team played, the result was incredibly disappointing. Since the game went off the rails despite a strong performance by the skaters, many Oilers fans pointed their finger squarely at Stuart Skinner and his early-season struggles. While it's true that Stu is fighting it right now, there are also a handful of his teammates who are in the same boat.Changing gears, we looked ahead at the Nation Vacation and how Jay is getting the Cleveland quarterback swap he was looking for despite it coming as a result of a horrific injury to Deshaun Watson. While happy that Watson won't be the quarterback for the Browns any longer, Jay was quick to clarify that he wanted a quarterback swap but did not want Watson to get hurt to make it happen. Ether way, this will make for an interesting angle to the football portion of the Nation Vacation.
It wouldn't be a Thursday afternoon without a fresh episode of Real Life to massage your earholes and help you get through the rest of the work week.The guys kicked off the Thursday episode of Real Life with a look at the new Nation Beer that just launched from our partners at Odd Company. Excited about trying the new beer, Chalmers cracked one and gave his first impression of how delicious this new version was. As you'll hear, the new Nation Beer is Chalmers-approved.Turning the podcast to last night's Oilers game, the boys walked through the season opener and how everyone feels after the boys got dusted 6-0 by the Winnipeg Jets. As much as the result was disastrous, everything leading up to puck drop was so much fun to watch and gave the boys the juice they needed to get back in the swing of things.Digging into the game itself, the guys gave their takes on what went wrong and what everyone thought of the new guys. Unfortunately, with everyone having as rough a night as the Oilers did on night one, it's tough to evaluate the new guys accurately since so much went wrong. Long story short, no one was impressive in the season opener, including the new guys.Finally, the boys wrapped up the Thursday episode of Real Life with a random collection of topics, including an argument about tater tots vs. hash browns and a recap of the final weeks of Big Brother. Despite this season of Big Brother ending as poorly as the boys believe it is, everyone had plenty of takes on who should win and why. Thankfully, a winner will mercifully be named on Sunday and the Big Brother conversation will finally be over.
