Oilers take Game 1 vs. Vegas, and the legend of playoff Connor Brown

It's the Wednesday after Game 1 of Round 2, which means a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never is ready to recap yet another Edmonton Oilers comeback win while also looking back at the week that was. On today's podcast, I recapped last night's win, what the Oilers need to do to pull away in the series, playoff Connor Brown, and much more.I started this week's podcast with an admission that I've once again made poor life choices on a school night. Seeing as the Oilers and Golden Knights kicked off their series last night, I felt it was necessary to have a few adult beverages to celebrate the occasion. The result, of course, is that I feel like death today, which made accomplishing my day-to-day tasks 200% more difficult. Even so, I was in a great mood after the Oilers won their series opener, which is certainly not the case for some Oilers fans around here.Turning my full attention back to the Oilers, I started with a recap of Game 1 between the Oilers and Golden Knights, and how a big win like that sets the table for a strong finish. I mean, yeah it would have been great if the boys hadn't needed to come up with a fifth straight comeback win — a new NHL record — but I'd be lying if I pretended it wasn't exciting to watch. A big part of that comeback was the result of the depth scoring coming through once again, which led to me spending the next handful of minutes pumping tires for a few of our boys. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a guest Righteous Sack Beating before wrapping up the podcast with a massive round of voicemails. The voicemail was alive again this week, and the messages were very funny and all over the map. As always, finishing up the show with your opinions is my favourite part of the whole thing and something I always look forward to most. Another hearty thank you to everyone who contributed to this week's episode because having you in the mix makes the show so much better.

It's the Wednesday after Game 5, which means a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never is ready to recap the Edmonton Oilers' miraculous comeback while also looking back at the week that was. On today's podcast, I recapped games 3-5, looked ahead at Game 6, what the Oilers need to do to close out the series, and much more.Isn't it amazing how many things can change in a week? When I recorded last Wednesday's episode, the Oilers had just spectacularly lost Game 1 and were about to drop Game 2 even worse somehow. The good news is that sports are the best reality show on earth, and watching our boys come roaring back with three straight wins is almost as good as it gets. I also touched on how great the other first round series have been, and how working through a playoff run can be tough on the body.Turning my full attention back to the Oilers, I started with a recap of games 3-5 and how the Oilers have gotten better with each passing period. That's not to say that they were perfect by any stretch, but Edmonton's ability to crank up their resiliency when it mattered most was an unstoppable force for Los Angeles. There's also the Calvin Pickard effect, as the team clearly enjoys playing in front of a guy who seems like the nicest man on earth. Then there's Evan Bouchard's four goals, Evander Kane's impact, and Leon Draisaitl tying Messier and Gretzky for one of the wildest playoff records ever. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a guest Righteous Sack Beating before wrapping up the podcast with a quality round of voicemails. The voicemail was alive this week, and the messages were very funny, as you could almost feel the rollercoaster of emotions that were going on. It's the Wednesday of Game 2 in Edmonton, which means a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never is ready to get you prepped for the night while looking back at the week that was. On today's podcast, I recapped Game 1, looked ahead at Game 2, what the Oilers need to do better, and much more.I kicked off this week's episode of BLTN with a recap of what's happened so far. Starting with the Game 1 party at Greta, I wanted to thank everyone who came out for a late start on a Monday and turned the bar into a vibe, even though the game started horribly. But as any good Oiler fan will tell you, the boys haven't exactly had much success in Game 1s historically, but the reaction to the loss was incredible to watch. As for the team itself, there were countless areas where the Oilers needed to improve, at least early in the game. For the first 38 minutes of Game 1, the Oilers looked like they couldn't do anything remotely productive, which allowed the Kings to essentially dominate the first two periods. Even with the loss, the way Edmonton was able to claw their way back from a 4-0 deficit has to have put a seed of doubt in the Kings' minds. Looking ahead at Game 2, I walked through some of the areas I think the Oilers can improve and how the new line combinations posted this morning could impact that plan. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about that's taking over downtown Edmonton before wrapping up the podcast with a quality round of voicemails. While the voicemail was quieter again this week, the messages were very funny anyway. It's the final Wednesday of the regular season, which means a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never is ready to get you prepped for the playoffs. On today's podcast, I'm discussing Oilersnation's playoff plans, what to expect from the Oilers and Kings, and much more.I started this week's Better Lait Than Never episode with a little playoff preview from an Oilersnation content perspective. I walked through what we've got coming for playoff coverage and how excited I am to get the post-season going, even though so many people seem down on our boys right now. Just because we're not travelling to L.A. for Round 1 this year, that doesn't mean we don't still have plenty planned for playoff content.Turning the podcast to the Oilers, I looked ahead at the 4th straight playoff kickoff against the Los Angeles Kings and how I expect this round to be different. Even though I still believe the Oilers can win, there are definitely some concerns going into this series that are new and scary for our boys. I also touched briefly on the Oilers' final regular season matchup against the San Jose Sharks as Connor McDavid looks for his eighth career 100-point season. Given that he's sitting at 99 points on the year and the final game is against the last-place Sharks, I'm feeling pretty good about him getting there. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about Phillip Danault's whining during the intermission about the Oilers trying to hurt Kings players before wrapping up the podcast with a quality round of voicemails. For the first time in weeks, I recorded Better Lait Than Never on the right day and at the scheduled time. It's the gift for your ear feelings that you didn't know you needed. On this week's podcast, we discussed the Edmonton Oilers' injury issues, what to expect from the last five games, and much more.I started the podcast with a random collection of topics, from the stock market insanity to the weather warming up to one of my favourite dating shows, to loop everyone into my varied interests. Am I stupid? Yes. Do I care that I sometimes have the TV-watching habits of a teenage girl? No. I also spoke about how dumb I was last weekend when I went out drinking with my buddies and ended up buying PS5 games that I didn't actually care about. *sigh*Turning the podcast to the Oilers, how could I not start the news by looking at the devastating run of injuries the team is working through right now? It seems like every single night, the Oilers have someone else going down with an injury, and the problem is getting so bad that it almost feels like a black cloud is hanging over this team's head right now. And with the playoffs right around the corner, Oilers fans are starting to wonder how healthy everyone can possibly be by the time Game 1 of the first round rolls around. How much difference can another week make? We'll have to hope it's a lot. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about frozen pizza prices before wrapping up the podcast with a very quiet round of voicemails. While the voicemail was whisper quiet this week, the limited messages that did get left were very funny anyway. It's Wednesday Friday afternoon, I'm back from the #NationVacation to Vegas, and Leon Draisaitl got hurt again, which meant there was plenty to discuss in this week's episode of Better Lait Than Never.I started this week's episode of BLTN with a quick recap of the #NationVacation to Vegas that happened this past week and how it was so much fun to hang out with everyone again. What's most amazing about these trips is how many times we get to see the same faces and how when there are new folks, the newbies are immediately welcomed in with open arms by the group. It's one of those magical Nation Citizen-isms you can only experience on these trips, and it's always a blessing to watch firsthand.Turning the podcast to the Oilers, I had to start with the injury to Leon Draisaitl after the future MVP left Thursday's game in the second period with some kind of core(???) looking injury. While we didn't get many updates on what happened with Leon, Kris Knoblauch stated that the superstar will be back before the playoffs and that the injury doesn't appear related to what previously kept him out of the lineup. The good news, though, is that it looks like Trent Frederic might be in the lineup for the first time as an Oiler as early as Saturday against the Kings. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about two-day hangovers before wrapping up the podcast with another round of voicemails. While the voicemail was quieter this week, the messages that did get left were very funny and all over the map. Another Wednesday means another episode of Better Lait Than Never is wrapped up, edited, and ready to get you through what's left of the week. On today's podcast, we're discussing Ryan Nugent-Hopkins' heater, McDavid and Draisaitl's injury timelines, the #NationVacation to Vegas, and more.I kicked off this week's podcast with a random collection of topics that have happened since last week, including some of the books I'm reading, trying to learn how to use a 3D printer, and how I'm going to be a fancy boy at the Oilers game tonight. As you'll hear, your boy will be in a game-time situation that has only ever happened once before — or when I snuck in — and I couldn't be more excited.Turning the podcast to the Oilers, I had to start with the heater Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has been on over his last four games and how it's so much fun to watch my guy crank it up when the team needs him most. While the start of RNH's season wasn't the most productive offensively, the guy has really turned it on down the stretch. Same goes for Jeff Skinner, who, all of a sudden, has three goals in his last two games after getting bumped up the lineup with Connor and Leon out. Yet, based on the line combos from practice yesterday, our man Skinner could be back to his usual spot on the 3rd line against Dallas. The other story that popped around here this week was the quote from Stan Bowman on Hockey Night in Canada that expressed his confidence in the team's ability to re-sign Connor McDavid to an extension. While Bowman didn't get into any details apart from saying he felt confident they would get it done, the GM's words were music to the fanbase's ears. Sticking with contracts, Jacob Chychrun signed a massive extension with Washington yesterday, which led to a discussion about how that deal will affect Evan Bouchard's upcoming contract negotiations. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about my trip to WEM before wrapping up the podcast with another round of voicemails. While the voicemail was quieter this week, the messages that did get left were very funny and all over the map. As always, finishing up the show with your opinions is my favourite part of the whole thing and something I always look forward to.

On this week's podcast, we're discussing Leon Draisaitl's 50-goal watch, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins' heater, line combinations, and more.To kick off this week's podcast, I started with a quick recap of my trip to Toronto from last week, how nice it was to visit that city, and how much I love leaving. There's just something about having a 30-minute cab ride to go four km that bothers me, you know? It's not like we were trying to move around in rush hour — a whole other problem entirely — but instead just trying to get to work quickly without walking everywhere. I also touched on how happy I am that my beloved Vikings won't be touching Aaron Rogers... at least for now.Getting back to the Oilers, I started with a recap of Tuesday's game against the Utah Hockey Club after we got some last-minute tickets and wandered in after the first few minutes. Not only did the Oilers need to blow a team out like that, but it was nice to have a stress-free night at the rink where the outcome was never in question. When was the last time you could say that? Not to mention, being at Rogers Place for Ryan Nugent-Hopkins' second straight three-point game was the cherry on top. Finally, I wrapped up this quick episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about using your speakerphone in public before wrapping up the show with another round of voicemails that were as entertaining as they were all over the map. There is no better time in your week than when the notification comes through that a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never has been posted on your favourite podcast app. This week, we're discussing the Oilers' struggles, scoring issues, my trip to Toronto, and much more.I started this week's episode of BLTN with an explanation of why I'm recording a day early and what I'll be up to in Toronto over the next few days. As much as I enjoy living on a plane these days, the same can not be said for red-eye flights, which is what I'll be taking tonight to head out east. Will I sleep on the plane? Unlikely. Will I complain about it the entire time I'm in Toronto? Yes. Yes, I will. On the bright side, Survivor is back for another season, which means another handful of weeks where I get to swoon over my new hero, Jeff Probst.Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, I started with a breakdown of Monday's loss to the Sabres and how it's truly puzzling that Edmonton continues to struggle against mediocre opponents. Despite starting hot as a pistol, our boys couldn't beat Buffalo's goaltender with any of their early chances, which seemed to put them in a funk. I also covered the fanbase's reaction to what Stan Bowman did at the trade deadline, and how it always makes me laugh how angry we get regardless of what the GM actually gets done. Finally, I wrapped up this quick episode of BLTN with a guest Righteous Sack Beating before wrapping up the show with another round of voicemails that were as entertaining as they were all over the map. Even though this bit is just getting started on the podcast, I already love having you fine folks sending me DMs about times when you've scored amazing deals.Turning the podcast to the Edmonton Oilers, it's hard not to feel discouraged right now based on how shitacular the team is playing. Not only did the team lose its sixth game in their last seven tries last night against the Ducks, but they looked completely down and out without much fight to turn things around. Losing is one thing, but looking completely dejected while the tailspin is happening is another problem altogether. I also spent some time on the Trent Frederic trade, what Stan Bowman may do at the trade deadline, and much more. Finally, I wrapped up this quick episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about the trade deadline before wrapping up the show with another round of voicemails that were all over the map. It may be a small thing, but just being able to go outside and walk my dog this week has been a huge win. I also took listeners behind the scenes a little bit about what we're working on ahead of the trade deadline, including our Daily Faceoff Trade Deadline special.Turning the podcast to the Oilers, it doesn't take much searching to see how upset the fanbase is right now after a run of putrid games put the team on their first four-game losing streak of the season. It's not all bad news, though, as Leon Draisaitl continues to light the world on fire, and Matthew Savoie is looking like he could be a damned good player for a long time. That said, with only two weeks left until the trade deadline, a lot of us are getting antsy about what Stan Bowman may or may not do at the league's annual swap 'n shop. Finally, I wrapped up this quick episode of BLTN with a pair of guest Righteous Sack Beatings, before wrapping up the show with another round of voicemails that were all over the map. From there, I offered a quick preview of Thursday's Canada/USA 4 Nations Final. Even though that game doesn't really mean a whole lot in terms of the overall hockey history, there's little doubt that both nations are fired up to be facing off against each other in the final. Based on the hype for tomorrow's rematch, you'd almost think this was an Olympic final or something, and I love every minute of it.Finally, I wrapped up this quick episode of BLTN with a guest Raighteous Sack Beatings from Dooks, before wrapping up the show with another round of voicemails that were all over the map. I also promised to do these more often because they really do help the podcast grow, and I also want to keep rewarding listeners for playing along.Turning the podcast back toward the Oilers, I started with a quick recap of Tuesday's game against the St. Louis Blues. The Oilers almost lost that one due to a four-minute stretch of disastrous hockey in the third period, so I couldn't help but wonder what's going on with these in-game lulls lately. As always, the tournament couldn't have been more fun.Looking at our beloved Edmonton Oilers, how could I not start with the return of Connor McDavid? After three games in jail, McDavid returned to the lineup against the Seattle Kraken and made an impact on the scoresheet almost immediately. It was another one of those games where the boys were flat to start for whatever reason, and thanks to a tying from No. 97, they were able to rally back for a third straight win. Finally, I wrapped up this quick episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about paper straws before wrapping up the show with another round of voicemails that were all over the map. As much as I thought it would be fun to eat nothing but hot dogs for as long as possible, eating only glizzies and nothing else has proven to be difficult. The good news is that we've already raised over $1000 for charity, and I also had a pair of tickets to give away on today's episode courtesy of Mistaken Mexican. With my own nonsense out of the way, I turned the podcast back toward the Edmonton Oilers. Starting with Monday's 1-0 win over the Los Angeles Kings. Not only was Skinner fantastic between the pipes, but that may have been one of the Oilers' best defensive efforts all season. Needless to say, it was a big win. On the downside, the Kings are a dirty hockey club, and there is no better example than the $5000 fine Adrian Kempe was hit with for slew-footing. Even with Kapanen jumping in immediately, that play re-sparked my concerns about the Oilers getting tougher. Finally, I wrapped up this quick episode of BLTN with a guest edition of the Righteous Sack Beating before wrapping up the show with another round of voicemails. Not only did they win that game, but it wasn't ever close, and things could have really gotten out of hand had it not been for Jeremy Swayman. I may be a day late with this week's episode of Better Lait Than Never, but I do plan to get the podcast back on track now that the holiday season is over. On this week's show, I discussed the Dollars for Dogs campaign, new Edmonton Oilers line combinations, rumours about the Vancouver Canucks, and a whole lot more.I kicked off this week's podcast with an update about the Dollars for Dogs campaign after I got a few new bids since I last recorded, which means the pressure is steadily rising now that the per-dog total is rising. I also talked about living out some childhood dreams after buying myself a new toy yesterday, and while I don't usually splurge on electronics all that often, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't having fun so far.Turning the show toward the Oilers, I finally ended my in-person losing streak after attending the New Year's Eve win over the Utah Hockey Club. If I'm being honest, I was nervous going into Rogers Place on the 31st for two reasons: 1) the boys hadn't won with me in the bar in a while, and 2) the Oilers' record on NYE tends to stink anyway. Fortunately, it all worked out after some key performances by the team's best players. Finally, I wrapped up this quick episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about trade deadline expectations before wrapping up the show with another round of voicemails. It wouldn't be Wednesday without a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never to massage your earholes with an hour of Oilers-adjacent nonsense. This week, I talked a little bit more about the Dogs for Dogs charity campaign, the Oilers' cursed third period against the Florida Panthers, Zach Hyman's poor face, and a whole lot more. Now that the Dogs for Dogs charity bit is settled and set for January, I started the podcast with a quick update on where we're at regarding the per-hot dog pledges and where I think we could still end up. If I'm being honest, the fact that anybody is willing to support this nonsense idea with real money is beyond me, but now that we're here, I'm vowing to do my best to raise as much money as possible.Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, I started the news with a podcast confession about Monday's loss to the Florida Panthers. You may have thought it was the team's fault that they fell apart in the third period and lost the game, but the real story features a lot more big curse energy. Either way, losing to the Panthers the way the boys did was a turd in the punchbowl on what was otherwise a fantastic week. I'm finally back in my comfort cave after a week on the road, which meant I was excited to have the time for a regularly scheduled episode of the Better Lait Than Never. This week, I recapped my trip to Toronto, spoke about The Sheet launch event, and covered all the cool things that are happening with the Oilers.I started this week's podcast episode by recapping my trip to Toronto. While I went to the 6ix for work purposes, a big part of the story was the Sheet launch event for Jeff Marek's new show. I don't usually get invited to events like that, so experiencing it firsthand and watching the spectacle play out was incredibly interesting. More in line with expectations, however, was my continued love-hate relationship with being in Toronto. It's fun for a few days, but then it's definitely time to leave.Turning the podcast back to the Edmonton Oilers, I started with Saturday's matchup vs. the St. Louis Blues. Obviously, Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway made their first trip back to Edmonton after signing those offer sheets, and it didn't take long for the Rogers Place faithful to let them have it. Was the booing too much? I gave my take. With those two out of the way, I got to a bunch of good news from around the Nation, as there are a bunch of our boys stepping up in a very big way to turn the season around. Finally, I wrapped up this quick episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about driving in the winter before wrapping up the show with another round of voicemails. This week's episode was all over the map, but I hope you enjoyed it anyway.Kicking off this week's episode of Better Lait Than Never, I started with a thank you to everyone who made their way to Denver for the first #NationVacation of the season. Not only was the trip filled with Oilers dubs — the OT winner by Nuge was made just for me — but more importantly, some incredible people. I then spent the next few minutes complaining about how I'd be heading back to the airport in a few hours to catch a flight to Toronto for some work meetings.Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, I started with the wins over Utah and Colorado because I wanted to kick things off with some good news. Those two wins—three if you count the Rangers game—made the Oilers look much more like themselves, and their ability to fill the net was a significant factor in the result. Unfortunately, the good times didn't last long, as the winning streak ended Tuesday in Vegas with a shutout loss to the Golden Knights. Finally, I wrapped up this quick episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about the CAD/USD exchange rate before wrapping up the show with another round of voicemails. For whatever reason, the Edmonton Oilers' schedule is so weird this season. As a result, we find ourselves in a mini bye week that isn't technically a bye week but is indeed boring us all like one. On the bright side, the lack of games meant more time for shenanigans on this week's episode of Better Lait Than Never.I started this week's podcast by discussing my excitement for this week's #NationVacation. Heading to another city to watch the Oilers play is one of my favourite things to do, and that excitement builds even further when we're going to a place I've never been before. I then changed gears a bit to talk about seeing The Book of Mormon on Friday night at the Jubilee and how it was one of the funniest nights I've had in a long time. If you've never seen that play and are a fan of South Park, you've gotta find a way to see it at least one time.Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, there has been little to talk about since last week because of the bizarre schedule. With only two games on the schedule this week, the Oilers' news cycle has been quiet, but that doesn't mean there weren't plenty of things to talk about. Starting with Kasperi Kapanen getting claimed off waivers, the Oilers looked to add some depth to their right side. The timing of the move couldn't have been better, however, as the club is still without Zach Hyman and Viktor Arvidsson, but no one really knows why. Finally, I wrapped up this quick episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about getting way too spicy about sports opinions before wrapping up the show with another round of voicemails. Even though we've gotten so used to McDavid's brilliance at this stage, I will never stop beating the drum of asking people to enjoy what they're watching because it's anything but normal. Moving along quickly, I then recapped Monday's Oilers game on Amazon Prime, which was the first of four nights we'll have on the streaming platform. Given that he was supposed to be out of the lineup for 2-3 weeks, seeing him on the top line at Wednesday's morning skate was certainly a surprise. Then again, should we be surprised? Not only did I have a blast with the boys, but we even ended up at the casino together afterward in the hopes of great wins. I also spent a few minutes talking about the World Series and the insane moment that happened in last night's game when a Yankees fan tried to pull a ball out of Mookie Betts' hand.Turning the podcast to the Oilers, I had to start with the news that Connor McDavid will be out of Edmonton's lineup for the next 2-3 weeks with an ankle injury. While that timeline isn't as bad as it could have been for our captain, the Oilers will need a bunch of players to step up in his absence. The Oilers racked up a pair of disappointing losses against the Stars and Hurricanes, and the mood around Oil Country is back in the sewer. Is there hope? Are we doomed? Let's talk about it in this week's episode of Better Lait Than Never.I kicked off this week's episode of BLTN by wondering aloud how it's possible that the Oilers 2024-25 season feels nearly identical to the disastrous start from a year ago. At 2-4-1 through seven games, it's not like the Oilers are down and out or anything like that, but I'm genuinely puzzled that a team this talented can allow this slow start to happen again.Digging into what's gone wrong, I started the news by looking at the losses against Dallas and Carolina. Both of those games were well within reach for our boys, but the lack of goal-scoring is really making it difficult for the team to gain any traction. That said, I also feel like it's a matter of time before Edmonton's luck starts to turn and pucks start going in the net, but it's been painful watching them struggle to get there.Making matters worse, some of our former friends are finding success in new markets while their old stomping grounds continue to struggle offensively. So, even though many of us believe the Oilers will turn things around, this early part of the season has been a tough pill to swallow. As the losses continue to pile up, the fanbase keeps getting more and more restless and louder about voicing their displeasure. Finally, I wrapped up this quick episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about the deja-vu feelings we're all working through before wrapping up the show with another round of voicemails. And seeing as last night's game was the deciding factor in whether or not Tyler got back into the meow mix, the results had everyone in our orbit dialled into every goal and mistake.Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, the team won their first game of the season last night against Philadelphia, but they sure didn't make it easy on themselves. Starting with two quick power play goals against, the Oilers found themselves in a hole before the first period was even half-over, and I don't think I'm talking out of school when I said the vibes were anything but bright. Fortunately, a pair of scraps from two unlikely combatants seemed to right the ship a little bit, and our boys went on to win, but I'd be lying if I said it didn't look dicey there for a minute. Finally, I wrapped up this quick episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about goaltender interference before wrapping up the show with another round of voicemails. No, this wasn't an RSB but rather a thought I had to let out after another round of NHL stars had to leave their respective games with injuries. At this point, not only am I over the pre-season, but all these injuries have really punctuated the point that this tune-up period shouldn't be longer than a few games max.Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, I ran through the latest camp updates now that the team is starting to look a little more like the one we'll see on opening night. There's an Oilers pre-season game against the Jets happening tonight, which meant I had to get myself organized if I was going to record the podcast in time to get settled in for the game.Kicking off the podcast, I started the show with some brand new music from Dangersuede after I spent the last few weeks asking why the BLTN original tunes had stopped flowing in. Seeing as I hadn't listened to the song before it made its debut on the podcast, I gave my first impressions on the new song and loved it so much I had to replay it twice. Speaking of Dangersuede, my dude brought me some of the most delicious desserts you can imagine this past week and the problem has been that I'm eating them too fast.Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, a report by Elliotte Friedman suggests that the Oilers don't plan to keep Evander Kane on the shelf all season and that he could return to the lineup early in 2025. Seeing as that doesn't fit my plan for the organization to cheat, I wondered out loud how likely that actually is to happen. Is Kane really going to come back in February, or will there be a mysterious soft tissue type of setback that keeps him sidelined for *checks notes* another couple of months.

Of course you are.I started this week's podcast with a quick run through of our Oilersnation annual planning meetings that I just got home from, which was also the reason why the show was late by a day. Seeing as this was the third year of these annual sessions, it's interesting to see how much the company has grown over the last 36 months and how we're not anywhere close to being done. I also decided this past week that I'm a Vikings fan now, so I walked through that decision and admitted that stretching it out as long as I did was more annoying than it was helpful.Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, the big news that came down this week was that both Darnell Nurse and Evander Kane are expected to miss the start of training camp due to injuries. Even though we all knew that Kane is banged up, hearing Nurse will be out for a while was certainly a surprise. All of a sudden, the Travis Dermott PTO started to make a little more sense from a depth perspective, no? On a more positive note, Leon Draisaitl is not exactly being shy about his want for Connor McDavid to sign an extension with the Oilers next summer, and hearing those two talk about the idea makes me feel all warm and tingly inside.Lastly, I wrapped up this week's show with some betting talk and a pair of guest RSBs before diving into this week's lot of voicemails. Not only did we raise a pile of money for Gregor's Grads, but we also had a fantastic day together out on the course, and I already cannot wait for next year's tournament.Turning the podcast back to hockey, I started the news with a tribute to Johnny Gaudreau. Even though he was an opponent throughout his career, Thursday night's news was heartbreaking in every possible way. That's why I wanted to spend a few minutes talking about one of the league's best players and how going up against him as often as the Oilers did made for a fantastic rivalry. Even days later, I still can't believe it.Changing gears, the Oilers signed Leon Draisaitl to an eight-year, $112 million contract extension on Tuesday, the news we've been waiting for basically all summer. As an Oilers fan my entire life, I had gotten used to our best players leaving when it came time to sign big deals, but yesterday's news basically erased all those memories from my early fandom. We've been waiting all summer for Leon Draisaitl to get his name on the dotted line for a new contract, and on Tuesday morning, we finally got the news. On Tuesday morning, the Oilers announced that their German star had signed an eight-year contract extension that carries a $14 million AAV. Whatever happened to the rumours that Leon wanted to sign in Boston? Remember those? Classic.

Are the Oilers trying to get the band back together? What about a trade?

Your Wednesday wouldn't be the same without a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never to wrap up the day and help guide you through what's left of the week. On today's podcast, I'm talking about Oilers rumours, PTO targets, betting futures, reality dating shows, and a whole lot more.I kicked off this week's podcast with yet another conversation about reality dating shows. Not only do I love them, but I finally got through the newest season of Love Island USA, and I could not be happier about it finally coming to a close. Frankly, the seasons of that show are way too long, and it was standing in the way of watching a much better trash fire in Too Hot to Handle.Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, it seems like the news du jour after the Holloway/Broberg offer sheets is what the Oilers can do with their newfound cap flexibility. According to Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli, the Oilers are looking around the league for defensive upgrades, including the idea of bringing back a couple of old friends for another tour of duty. Yet, given the current depth chart, all of the options the Oilers seem to be looking at are RHD, which has plenty of us wondering if that's the right approach.Lastly, I wrapped up this week's show with some betting talk and an RSB about moving companies before working through another round of voicemails that were all over the map. The good news is that today's voicemails were a mixed bag of topics, which is always fun from my side of the microphone, and you fantastic folks did not disappoint.
