It's been a slow week for the Edmonton Oilers, despite the start of free agency. The club signed a couple of players — Andrew Mangiapane and Curtis Lazar — but has yet to address goaltending or make any changes on the blue-line. Has general manager Stan Bowman done enough, or is the team still missing a few pieces to truly compete? The guys kick things off with the Delicious Debate, brought to you by Odd Company.Despite the lack of big-name additions, reports linked the Oilers to college standout Isaac Howard. A former first-round pick of the Tampa Bay Lightning, Howard has reportedly declined to sign with the Bolts. Edmonton is rumoured to have made a trade offer for his rights, but it wasn't enough. Should the Oilers continue to pursue Howard, and would he actually move the needle?Later in the episode, the guys discuss potential goaltending options, how the roster might shape up next season, and whether Evan Bouchard deserves a spot on Team Canada. The show wraps up with Ask the Idiots and the Hot and Cold Performers segment. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
We open in honor of Alex Delvecchio's memory - forever a legend of the Detroit Red Wings and the NHL. (00:00) NHL Free Agency has come and almost completely gone, and it went as predicted for the Detroit Red Wings (6:45)...tune in as we discuss every one of Steve Yzerman's moves, including: signing Albert Johansson (12:05), bringing back Jonatan Berggren (14:25), trading Vladimir Tarasenko away (15:50), keeping Showtime going in Hockeytown as Patrick Kane re-signs in Detroit (18:20), Ian Mitchell depth signing (25:30), Jacob Bernard-Docker brought in on defense (26:35), James van Riesmdyk signed (finally) with the Red Wings (33:35), Mason Appleton signed (37:20), John Leonard (organizational depth) signed and Elmer Soderblom extended (44:05). After that, we take a look at the cap space Steve Yzerman has to work with, what holes are left to fill in the Detroit Red Wings roster, who the top 6 forward could be alongside Dylan Larkin, Lucas Raymond, Marco Kasper, Patrick Kane, and Alex DeBrincat, if a top 4 defenseman can still be available to join Mortiz Seider, Simon Edvinsson, Ben Chiarot, and Albert Johansson, how John Gibson helps the team's playoff hopes, whether Ehlers could come to Hockeytown, how close Yzerman was to trading for K'Andre Miller, if the Detroit Red Wings can be a playoff team, and so much more (47:15). Next, a look at some of the contracts signed across the NHL, including Mitch Marner's sign and trade to Vegas, Brad Marchand & Aaron Ekblad staying in Florida, Evan Bouchard's extension in Edmonton, Ivan Provorov, Vladislav Gavrikov, & more (1:19:45). Then, Oilers analyst Jason Gregor (26:10) stops by to discuss the Edmonton Oilers' offseason building process, their plans in net, Evan Bouchard's extension, the impact of losing Corey Perry in the locker room, and Connor McDavid's next contract. The views and opinions expressed in this podcast are those of the hosts and guests and do not necessarily reflect the position of Rogers Sports & Media or any affiliates.
It's the Wednesday after the start of NHL free agency, which means a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never is ready to recap what was another busy week in Edmonton. On today's podcast, I discussed the Oilers signing Andrew Mangiapane to a two-year deal, Evan Bouchard's extension, said goodbye to some old friends, and much more.We made it through the NHL draft and the start of free agency, and the Edmonton Oilers were quieter than many fans had hoped they would be, but I wasn't actually all that surprised. Given the lack of tradable assets and minimal cap space available, from my side of the computer screen, I wasn't overly surprised that the Oilers were quiet even though my heart hoped Stan Bowman would pull out some magic. Looking at some of the contracts GMs handed out around the league as the day wore on, I found myself feeling increasingly happier that Stan Bowman wasn't blowing the dollars he had on players like Tanner Jeannot and Cody Ceci. I'm not saying I wanted the Oilers to go out and sign those guys, but my point was that some very mid players locked in for a pile of money. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about overreacting to free agency before wrapping up the podcast with another round of voicemails. The voicemail was quieter again this week, but the messages were still as fun as ever. As always, the voicemails are a fun way to wrap up the show and give everyone a chance to share their thoughts. Another hearty thank you to everyone who contributed to this week's episode, because having all of you in the mix makes the show so much better.
Nick Kypreos, Justin Bourne and Sam McKee continue their coverage of the opening day of NHL free agency by reviewing the top names that have signed so far. They discuss Corey Perry's fit with the Kings, Brock Boeser sticking around in Vancouver, Evan Bouchard's mega-extension in Edmonton, how the Oilers can entice Connor McDavid to stay, Thatcher Demko's deal with the Canucks and the Panthers' UFA's paycuts. Later, Hockey Night in Canada's Elliotte Friedman (30:00) stops by the studio to review the day's action, the sense around the league on 'tampering,' Bowen Byram's market, the rumours around Sidney Crosby, Mitch Marner's fit in Vegas and where Nikolaj Ehlers might land. The views and opinions expressed in this podcast are those of the hosts and guests and do not necessarily reflect the position of Rogers Sports & Media or any affiliates.
Free agency day means a fresh episode of Oilersnation Radio is ready to massage your earholes and bring you up to date on everything going on with the Edmonton Oilers. On today's podcast, the fellas discussed the Evan Bouchard extension, the NHL Draft, Kasperi Kapanen, and much more.We kicked off the Monday episode of ONR with a delicious debate about where everyone is at with Evan Bouchard's four-year, $10.5m AAV contract, and whether it's not more of a problem that Bowman wasn't able to lock in the max term. We also discussed the Oilers re-signing both Kasperi Kapanen and Noah Philp before they were able to reach free agency, likely with the plan of having both of these players start on the opening day roster. Chances are, the Oilers are going to be tight for cap space when October rolls around, and they'll need cheaper deals on the books to fill holes in the roster. With plenty of time left to go until the deals slow down, the boys walked through some of our former friends who signed elsewhere on Tuesday, including Corey Perry's new deal in Los Angeles and Connor Brown's contract in New Jersey. While we all expected a quieter day in Edmonton given the team's lack of cap space, that doesn't make it any easier to see contributing roster players sign for big smoke in other markets. Regardless, the deals signed in the early hours on July 1st don't mean the Oilers are anywhere close to done, but that didn't stop many Oilers fans from being disappointed anyway.Regardless of what the Oilers have done or haven't done yet, there's little doubt that teams are spending big money on free agents with the salary cap expected to fly up over the next handful of years. In fact, one could make the argument that the Oilers could be better off avoiding some of these overpriced free agents, especially with the dollars that some mid-tier UFAs are signing on extended deals. Is that coping? Potentially yes. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Thursday afternoon means a fresh episode of Real Life was recorded, edited, and is ready to help you kick off the rest of your workweek. On today's podcast, the guys discussed the Oilers' loss to Florida, Connor McDavid's extension comments, and more. The guys started the Thursday episode of Real Life with a discussion about what went wrong with the Oilers in the Stanley Cup Final, and how it wasn't nearly as close this year as it was the previous year. As much as it's painful to admit, the Panthers were the better team throughout the series, and it wasn't exactly surprising to see Florida lock down a second straight Cup win. They also discussed the Connor McDavid press conference, and how there are so many people overthinking his comments that he wants to do what's best for his family.Changing gears, Wanye wanted to know if travelling back to Florida for the second straight SCF gave the boys some appreciation for the travel schedule pro athletes have to deal with. While there's no doubt that travelling on a private jet is not the same as slogging through commercial flights, the reality is that the late nights and being away from home cannot be easy. Either way, there's no doubt that flying across the continent is a slog regardless of how you get there. Finally, the guys wrapped up the Thursday episode of Real Life with some beef between Tyler and Jay after the latter blamed the Cup loss on Evan Bouchard and Stuart Skinner. As you'll hear, the boys got spicy about two key players and whether or not they should be part of the solution going forward. As always, the boys were passionate about the roster and what needs to change for the team to get over the hump finally.

We've seen three games in both the East and West and one series has been much more interesting than the others. The Florida Panthers have been absolutely pummeling the Carolina Hurricanes, which has raised some questions about the Canes roster and also Rod Brind'Amour, who is close to losing his 12th straight Conference Finals game.Out west, the Oilers took a 2-1 series lead over the Stars on Sunday. Stuart Skinner turned in another impressive performance, Evan Bouchard continued to shine and Connor McDavid found the back of the net twice. The guys talked about the series and how the Oilers have this feeling like a lot more than a 2-1 series lead.Tyler then joined for ‘Fill in the Blank' where he asked the guys about Mitch Marner's fit in Carolina, their NHL GM of the Year, and the Stanley Cup odds on Bet365.To wrap, the guys talked a little bit about USA's win at the World Hockey Championships.1:10 - Darche lands on Long Island11:30 - Panthers jump out to a 3-0 lead20:25 - Oilers lead Stars 2-138:20 - Fill in the Blank50:00 - USA wins Gold at WorldsWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? The Oilers are back in the driver's seat. After a disappointing Game 1 and a win in Game 2, the Edmonton Oilers delivered their best performance of the playoffs with a dominating 6-1 win over the Dallas Stars in Game 3 of the Western Conference Final.Stuart Skinner was absolutely dialled in, turning aside 34 of 35 shots in what was undoubtedly his best game of the postseason. From game-saving stops to jaw-dropping highlight-reel moments, Skinner gave the Oilers the backbone they needed to regain control of the series.Evan Bouchard opened the scoring early in the first, with Connor McDavid adding another to make it 2-0. Dallas responded with a goal in the second period, but McDavid struck again with 18 seconds left in the frame to squash any momentum the Stars were building. In the third, Zach Hyman broke out in a big way, scoring twice to help put the game on ice and give the Oilers a 2-1 series lead with Game 4 set for tomorrow night in Edmonton.Today on the show, we'll recap all the action from a dominant Game 3 in our Scoring Summary, deliver our One Big Take, ask the Sherwood Ford Giant Question, and check in on the rest of the league in our Playoff Report.Website: https://oilersnation.com/https://twitter.com/OilersNation/https://www.youtube.com/@Oilersnationdotcom/https://www.facebook.com/OilersNation/https://www.instagram.com/oilersnationdotcomhttps://www.tiktok.com/@oilersnationSHOUTOUT TO OUR SPONSORS!!

Nothing is better than a fresh episode of the Real Life podcast to recap the weekend and start your week. On the Monday episode of Real Life, the guys discussed the Oilers' series comeback, Evan Bouchard's redemption, the NFL draft, and much more. The guys started the Monday episode of Real Life by looking at the Oilers' miraculous comeback in their first-round series against the Los Angeles Kings. While neither Games 3 nor 4 were masterpieces by Edmonton, the resilience they showed to come back on both nights was as extraordinary as it was concerning that they could keep doing it. As much as the comebacks were thrilling, wouldn't it be nice to have the boys find an early lead and be able to keep it for 60 minutes?Diving into the Game 4 win, the guys discussed the Oilers' comeback win and how Sunday's victory was as electric as it gets in the post-season. Starting with the way the Oilers got better as the game wore on, the guys wondered why it takes the boys being down by a goal or more before they're able to get themselves going.Changing gears, the guys looked at the NFL draft from this past weekend, and how the Cleveland Browns snagged Shedeur Sanders in the fifth round even though some people — his old man, specifically — were hyping him up as a top prospect. Since Jay is a massive Browns fan, everyone wanted to know whether or not he'd be purchasing a new jersey to celebrate his team's new toy. From there, Chalmers also let the boys know about a prank call involving Sanders and how the kid's dad ended up taking shrapnel as a result.
