The Dallas Stars demolished the Senators 6-1 and keep their scoring frenzy alive in a game that Wyatt Johnston found the back of the net three times!
Welcome to the DFO Rundown with Jason Gregor and Jeff Marek!Marek opens the show by diving into the Vezina conversation, following up on the debate between Rupp and Gregor about which young goalie could win one first. Marek sides with Rupp, choosing Lukas Dostal — noting that Anaheim appears to be the closest to contention among the young-goalie teams. In Vegas, Carter Hart has been recalled by the Golden Knights. His numbers in Henderson weren't impressive, and the rust is still evident, but the guys debate what his impact could be — and how fans and players alike may react to the polarizing goaltender's return. The Flyers have been another surprise, backed by strong goaltending from Dan Vladar. Trevor Zegras, meanwhile, has shown real growth since arriving in Philadelphia, and the guys dive into his shootout wizardry and newfound maturity.St. Louis struggled early with defensive breakdowns and shaky goaltending, sinking them to the bottom of the Central Division. They appear to be stabilizing now — but can they realistically dig their way out of the early-season hole? The President's Trophy chase between the Dallas Stars and Colorado Avalanche sparks a debate about who has the better shot at the Stanley Cup. Gregor leans Stars — and wonders whether Dallas could look at Mason Marchment if Seattle becomes a deadline seller. The Jets, meanwhile, are 1-4-0 without Connor Hellebuyck, and the Central's top three are pulling away. Marek stresses Winnipeg's need for a true second-line center. Can the Jets tread water long enough to stay in the Wild Card race? With the Leafs' playoff odds sitting at just 11%, the guys debate whether Toronto can climb back into the race — or if the season is already slipping away.In Tampa Bay, John Cooper has turned the ship around. The Lightning are back atop the Atlantic Division, with Vasilevskiy, Point, and Kucherov heating up. Gregor and Marek both see Vasy as a major Vezina contender at this point in the season.Lastly, the Predators could become one of the league's most intriguing sellers. Which player is their most valuable trade asset? Filip Forsberg, Ryan O'Reilly, Juuse Saros, and Steven Stamkos headline the list of potential deadline chips, and the guys lay out ideal landing spots for a few of them.Want to hear more from Jason and the entire DFO team? Wyatt Johnston delivered one of the best performances of his career with a hat trick and four-point night as the Dallas Stars rolled past the Ottawa Senators. Jason Robertson continued his dominant scoring streak, and the Stars executed one of their most complete games of the season. However, the win came with a major concern: Lian Bichsel suffered an injury that could impact the already-strained Dallas blue line. Ryan and James recap the big moments, break down standout performances, evaluate the defensive depth, and discuss why this version of the Stars is beginning to look like a legitimate contender. Boomer, Pinder & Rhett dive into the Oilers' embarrassing 8–3 loss to the Dallas Stars… this team looks like a complete joke right now. The defense is a mess, the goaltending is a disaster, and even McDavid looks like he's had enough. We've reached the point of the season where you have to ask: Are the Edmonton Oilers OK? Slow starts have become a yearly tradition in Edmonton, and while they've managed to overcome them in the past, this one feels different. Let's do this! The Cult of Hockey podcast. By the Faithful and for the Faithful. Today Kurt Leavins of the Edmonton Journal digs into the Edmonton Oilers 8-3 loss to the Stars of Dallas. The Edmonton Oilers faced another challenging night on the ice, suffering a disheartening 8-3 defeat against the Dallas Stars. In this episode of the Cult of Hockey podcast, hosts David Staples and Kurt Levin dissect the game, highlighting both the bright spots and the glaring issues that continue to plague the team. The podcast opens with David sharing his recent skiing experience at Sunshine, drawing a parallel to the Oilers' performance. Just as skiing in poor visibility can be a nightmare, the Oilers struggled to find their footing against the Stars. Kurt agrees, noting the team's inconsistency, especially after a grueling road trip where they managed to claw through tough games. Kurt highlights Connor Clattenburg as a standout player despite the loss. Clattenburg, who was called up from the minors, made an immediate impact with a heavy hit and later scored his first NHL goal. His celebration was infectious, bringing some much-needed excitement to a lackluster game. David echoes this sentiment, noting how Clattenburg's raw joy in scoring exemplifies why fans love the sport. The hosts emphasize that Clattenburg's performance raises questions about roster decisions moving forward. Jack Roslovic also received recognition for his skillful goal, showcasing his ability to capitalize on opportunities. His offensive instincts have made him a valuable asset, and his desire to shoot at the net is something the Oilers need more of from all players, especially their stars. Despite some bright spots, the conversation quickly shifts to the defensive struggles of the Oilers. Kurt expresses disappointment in the top defensive pairing of Bouchard and Ekholm, who faltered significantly compared to their previous game against Florida. Both players had crucial lapses that led to goals against, raising concerns about their consistency. David adds that these defensive issues reflect a larger problem within the team, where even the best players are not performing up to par defensively. The hosts delve into the need for players to take accountability for their defensive responsibilities. They discuss how star players like McDavid and Draisaitl often get caught in the wrong positions, either over-pursuing the puck or failing to engage defensively. This lack of awareness creates vulnerabilities that opposing teams exploit. David emphasizes the importance of a defensive mindset, especially in a league as competitive as the NHL. Conclusion: The Oilers are at a crossroads. With moments of brilliance from players like Clattenburg and Roslovic, there is hope for the season. However, the persistent defensive lapses must be addressed if the team hopes to contend for the playoffs. As Kurt aptly puts it, the Oilers need to rediscover their defensive identity to match their offensive talent. Key takeaways include the importance of player accountability, the need for a strong defensive foundation, and the bright future of promising young players.

On today's edition of The Oil Stream, the boys break down last night's embarrassing 8–3 loss to the Dallas Stars. What on earth is going on with this team? Was that performance officially rock bottom? Do the Oilers have any answers left — or is it time to start looking at trades? Plus: how hot is the seat getting for Knoblauch, and how much longer does he have if things don't change fast? All that and so much more on another fiery episode of The Oil Stream, right here on Edmonton Sports Talk. The Oil Stream is presented by Boston Pizza!
It's been another wild week around here with the Oilers rollercoaster making another loop, and I've got a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never ready to recap it all. On today's podcast, I talked about the Oilers' most recent blowout, goalie rumours, players coming back from injuries, and much more.Just when you think the Edmonton Oilers might be turning things around, we've got another debacle on home ice that has the fanbase questioning their sanity and what the hell is going on around here. After a strong finish to their seven-game road trip, the Oilers returned home to get completely dismantled by the visiting Dallas Stars, and that loss has people running through the same old questions again. When will Stan Bowman trade for a goalie? Do they need more help on defence? Can this team figure it out? Only time will give us the answers, but that didn't stop me from wading in with my takes anyway. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a guest Righteous Sack Beating from Eoin, then closed out the podcast with another round of voicemails. The voicemail was alive this week, and everyone's takes were all over the map and very fun to listen to. The voicemail is my favourite way to wrap up the show and give everyone a chance to share their thoughts. Another hearty thank you to everyone who contributed to this week's episode. Having all of you in the mix makes the show so much better.Want to leave a voicemail for next week's show? Do it here!
Ben Ennis and Brent Gunning discuss the Oilers' disappointing game against the Dallas Stars, exploring whether goaltending is the sole issue and if a major rethink is needed for playoff contention. They ponder Connor McDavid's long-term commitment to the team and compare the Oilers to the current Leafs. The hosts also reflect on Jamie Benn's career milestone and discuss the Blue Jays' potential interest in Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte, as well as the implications of Sonny Gray's trade to the Red Sox for the AL East. They wrap up by addressing Hal Steinbrenner's comments on the Yankees' revenue and the Blue Jays' pursuit of Tatsuya Imai (24:45).The views and opinions expressed in this podcast are those of the hosts and guests and do not necessarily reflect the position of Rogers Sports & Media or any affiliate.
