It's another Wednesday in the middle of the NHL dead zone, which means a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never is ready to recap what was another non-event news week in Edmonton. On today's podcast, I discussed Connor McDavid's contract extension, Northlands Coliseum memories, some player retirements, and whatever else has happened over the last seven days. There still isn't much happening in Edmonton Oilers land these days, but with Connor McDavid back in town ahead of Team Canada orientation camp, the contract talk has already started to pick back up. Not only did McDavid talk about his potential extension today, but we also heard from Elliotte Friedman on what he expects the timeline to look like for the captain's renewal. Changing gears, I also spent a few minutes talking about the upcoming Rexall Place/Northlands Coliseum demolition that is scheduled for 2026 and how it's going to be sad to see the old barn get knocked down, even though we haven't been there in years. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a guest Righteous Sack Beating before wrapping up the podcast with another round of voicemails. The voicemail was alive with nonsense this week, and as always, the messages were as fun as ever. The voicemails are a fun way to wrap up the show and give everyone a chance to share their thoughts. Another hearty thank you to everyone who contributed to this week's episode, because having all of you in the mix makes the show so much better.

The hosts wrap up the Summer Cooler series focusing on the Pacific Division where the Edmonton Oilers have represented the Western Conference in the past two Stanley Cup Finals though the division sent only three teams to the playoffs in 2025.IN THIS EPISODE[01:44] - Edmonton Oilers - The most compelling question for the upcoming campaign is whether enough has been done to keep impending UFA Connor McDavid in the fold beyond this season. And, if so, for how long?[11:41] - Vegas Golden Knights - The biggest off-season move was authored by the VGK in acquiring Mitch Marner from the Maple Leafs. The franchise consistently operates in the "now and we'll worry about the future when we get there."[19:37] - Los Angeles Kings - After finally having everything in their favor in the opening round, the Kings still managed to fall for a fourth straight spring to the Oilers. Can a bunch of older free agents move this team forward in 2026?[28:47] - Calgary Flames - One of the real surprises in 2024-25 re-signed many of their own players as opposed to adding any free agents. Not much room for error with an offensively challenged team that won't be sneaking up on anyone in the new season.[36:29]- Vancouver Canucks - If there's an opposite to the Flames, it the Canucks who entered 2024-25 with high expectations only to go through a tumultuous season. Rookie head coach Adam Foote takes over a team with a much lower bar heading into the new campaign.[44:14] - Anaheim Ducks - A team many are looking at to take a big step forward, the Ducks do so with the second winningest coach in NHL history, returning to the best for the first time in almost four years.[52:37] - Seattle Kraken - In the spirit of Pacific Division continuity, there's the 2024-25 overachiever, the underachiever, the up-and-comer and the status quo. The fifth year Kraken somewhat fit into that category, even with a new head coach.[1:02:01] - San Jose Sharks - Yes, reason for optimism in the Bay Area. While pushing the Western bubble would still be a long shot, their youth down the middle is set to become the cornerstone of the franchise for the next decade.X: https://twitter.com/NHLWraparoundNeil Smith: https://twitter.com/NYCNeilVic Morren: https://www.linkedin.com/in/vic-morren-7038737/NHL Wraparound Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/nhlwraparound/#NHLWraparound #ShortShifts #NYCentric #StanleyCupdate #NeilSmith #VicMorren #NHL #SummerCoolers #Loogaroo #AnaheimDucks # #BostonBruins #BuffaloSabres #CalgaryFlames #CarolinaHurricanes #ChicagoBlackhawks #ColoradoAvalanche #ColumbusBlueJackets #DallasStars #DetroitRedWings #EdmontonOilers #FloridaPanthers #LosAngelesKings #MinnesotaWild #MontrealCanadiens #NashvillePredators #NewJerseyDevils #NewYorkIslanders #NewYorkRangers #OttawaSenators #PhiladelphiaFlyers #PittsburghPenguins #StLouisBlues #SanJoseSharks #SeattleKraken #TampaBayLightning #TorontoMapleLeafs #UtahMammoth #VancouverCanucks #VegasGoldenKnights #WashingtonCapitals #WinnipegJets #ConnorMcDavid #LeonDraisaitl #StanBowman #EvanderKane #ViktorArvidsson #CoreyPerry #ConnorBrown #JohnKlingberg #JeffSkinner #TrentFrederic #KasperiKapanen #EvanBouchard #AndrewMangiapane #CurtisLazar #IsaacHoward #RileyStillman #ZachHyman #VasilyPodkolzin #RyanNugent-Hopkins #MatthewSavoie #MattiasJanmark #AdamHenrique #MattiasEkholm #DarnellNurse #BrettKulak #JakeWalman #TyEmberson #StuartSkinner #CalvinPickard #MitchMarner #NickRoy #MarkStone #TomasHertl #WilliamKarlsson #ReillySmith #BrandonSaad #JeremyLauzon #ColtonSissons #NicolasHague #JaycobMegna #TannerPearson #VictorOlofsson #AlexPietrangelo #SheaTheodore #BraydenMcNabb #NoahHanafin #ZachWhitecloud #BruceCassidy #KaedanKorczak #BrettHowden #KeeganKolesar #PavelDorofeyev #JackEichel #IvanBarbashev #AdinHill #AkiraSchmid #SergeiBobrovsky #KenHolland #JoelArmia #CodiCeci #BrianDumoulin #RobBlake...

It's Friday afternoon, which means a fresh episode of Oilersnation Radio is ready to massage your eardrums with an hour of off-season Oilers talk. On today's podcast, the fellas discussed Tyler's Ace Race, waiting on Connor McDavid, and much more.We kicked off the Friday episode of ONR with a delicious debate about an under-the-radar player that everyone is excited to watch this coming season. From Stuart Skinner rebounding to Trent Frederic playing healthy as an Oiler for the first time to Adam Henrique having a better offensive season, there are plenty of players on the roster the boys are excited to watch. Needless to say, the squad is hopeful about what the current roster will be able to do in 2025-26. Looking at the limited news that happened this past week, the guys discussed a new goaltending rumour that suggested Edmonton could be interested in one of Detroit's many goaltenders. We also discussed recent speculation from John Shannon that suggested Connor McDavid's contract extension could come in cheaper than some folks expect. Talking about McDavid's extension led the boys to wonder when No. 97's name will end up on a contract, and Baggedmilk has a horrible feeling it's going to come through when everyone is on the golf course for the Oilersnation Open. Finally, we wrapped up the Friday episode of ONR with another round of Ask the Idiots, betting talk for our friends at bet365, and Hot and Cold Performers to look back on the week. With just over two months left until the start of the 2025-26 season, the guys spent the bulk of the Friday episode talking about an array of topics that were Oilers-related or not at all, but that's what happens in August. It's Friday afternoon, which means a fresh episode of Oilersnation Radio is ready to massage your eardrums with an hour of off-season Oilers talk. On today's podcast, the fellas discussed bubble players, winning jobs at camp, PTOs, and much more.We kicked off the Friday episode of ONR with a delicious debate about the Oilers' roster and whether any players who played last year could find themselves on the bubble. While many slots on the roster are likely written in ink, we looked at the fourth line and wondered if either of Mattias Janmark or Kasperi Kapanen could get beat out for a job. With plenty of competition fighting for those jobs, it's fair to ask if any of the veterans are at risk of losing a spot.Changing gears, the guys walked through the little Oilers news that's happened over the last week, including some minor league signings in Bakersfield, Connor McDavid's extension, and Andrew Mangiapane's new baby. And while there isn't much happening right now, that didn't stop the boys from yammering on about these limited items anyway. Even so, the big news everyone is waiting for is when Connor McDavid will sign his extension, and even though it's taking longer than we may hope, there's still no need to be concerned about having No. 97 back. Finally, we wrapped up the Friday episode of ONR with another round of Ask the Idiots, betting talk for our friends at bet365, and Hot and Cold Performers to look back on the week. This week on The Oil Stream Dusty and Tommy dive into one of the spiciest debates in Oil Country: Who faced more criticism as an Edmonton Oiler — Darnell Nurse or Justin Schultz? We break down the fan perception, media narratives, and on-ice performance that shaped each player's time in Edmonton, and discuss how fair (or unfair) the heat really was.
638. Part 1 of our interview with Lori Peek about her book, The Continuing Storm, which she wrote with Kai Erikson. More than fifteen years later, Hurricane Katrina maintains a strong grip on the American imagination. The reason is not simply that Katrina was an event of enormous scale. But, quite apart from its lethality and destructiveness, Katrina retains a place in living memory because it is one of the most telling disasters in our recent national experience, revealing important truths about our society and ourselves. The Continuing Storm reflects upon what we have learned about Katrina and about America. Kai Erikson and Lori Peek expand our view of the disaster by assessing its ongoing impact on individual lives and across the wide-ranging geographies where displaced New Orleanians landed after the storm. Such an expanded view, the authors argue, is critical for understanding the human costs of catastrophe across time and space. Concluding with a broader examination of disasters in the years since Katrina—including COVID-19— The Continuing Storm is a sobering meditation on the duration of a catastrophe that continues to exact steep costs in human suffering. It was a mixed crew on Oilersnation Radio today, with three of the regular five taking a break ahead of the weekend. Cam and Kennedy joined Liam and Rick to break down everything that's happened with the Oilers over the past week — which, admittedly, hasn't been much. The show kicked off with a discussion about Ryan Nugent-Hopkins' legacy. Heading into the season, Nugent-Hopkins is on pace to play his 1,000th game as an Oiler. He also has a chance to finish top five in franchise history for points and could become the first player to start and finish his entire career in Edmonton. The question was posed: how should Nugent-Hopkins' legacy be defined?Over the weekend, three Oilers tied the knot, including star forward Leon Draisaitl. Kennedy recapped all the details from the South of France, including who was — and wasn't — in attendance. The crew also discussed the “friendmoon” Draisaitl and Connor McDavid are currently enjoying with their wives, and how that might factor into McDavid's future in Edmonton. The episode wrapped up with another round of Ask the Idiots, followed by the Hot and Cold Performers of the week. I got the chance to talk to NHL Legend Marty McSorley. We went over everything, fighting, winning, what the Oilers need to do to win the cup, rule changes, what it was like protecting Wayne Gretzky for so long and so much more. Enjoy this as much as I did taping it, it's a great one.
