Take a nostalgic look back at some of the most popular children's book series published in the '80s and '90s. First, we interview Gabrielle Moss, author of Paperback Crush. Then we talk with Destinee Sutton, a children's librarian at KCLS. We chat about school book fairs, free pizza, and the books that made us lifelong readers. Spoiler alert: We all wanted to be as cool as Babysitter's Club member and style icon Claudia Kishi.

The 1970s are sometimes hailed as the true dawn of young-adult literature, the decade when authors like Judy Blume and Lois Lowry showed that teen readers were worth taking seriously. Decades later, J.K. Rowling revolutionized YA, permanently broadening its appeal to adults. But teen fiction of the '80s and '90s is often ignored. Bustle editor and writer Gabrielle Moss has a soft spot in her heart for what she calls the genre's "intellectual dead zone"—the era of The Baby-sitters Club, Sweet Valley High, and so many more girl-centered series. In this interview with NYPL's Gwen Glazer, Moss discusses her new book "Paperback Crush," which makes the case for why the YA fiction of the '80s and '90s shouldn't be overlooked, and why it's so much fun to revisit.

This week's "Chapter" is a doozy! Brenna and Joe struggle through Lauren Oliver's breakout 2010 novel Before I Fall and the 2017 film adaptation of the same name by Ry Russo-Young. Tackling questions about character likability, white privilege, redemption arcs, the financial viability of killing your protagonist and a quick discussion of Vancouver housing prices, this may just be the week that breaks Brenna! Also: we introduce three new YA BINGO squares, Brenna highlights Paperback Crush by Gabrielle Moss and Joe goes off on J.K. Rowling's bad screenplay for the new Fantastic Beasts film "The Crimes of Grindelwald". Stay in touch with the show on Twitter using #HKHSPod: Brenna: @brennacgray Joe: @bstolemyremote Or email us at hkhspod@gmail.com. See you on the page and on the screen!
We're still languishing in La La Land with Rusty and her co-star Felix, through chapters 19-20 of the 1981 Norma Klein YA classic, "Domestic Arrangements." Rusty gets cornrows and spends a naked night with Felix over Nova Scotia salmon and Champagne, Joshua Poshua is MIA (potentially Andover-bound), Alison forms a Little Boy Parade, and Jody learns a new word. Listen along for the usual dramatic radio plays, mess-ups, and uncontrollable singing/swearing. The girls also have a first look at Gabrielle Moss' brand-new book about '80s and '90s teen fiction series, "Paperback Crush." Super duper congratulations to this week's Blume Head of the Week, Mary Ann! It's a Judy Blume book club. Join us every Thursday!
Throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s, Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield mostly made twinning look like a dream… but things are rarely as simple on the inside (LOL). In Volume 32 of Francine Pascal's beloved Sweet Valley High series, Jessica (AKA the impulsive twin) has decided that she's sick of being one of an identical pair. She takes drastic action to differentiate herself from Elizabeth (AKA the bookish twin). Hijinks ensue, relationships are tested, and everyone is essentially being the most ridiculous version of themselves. Alli and Sweet Valley High enthusiast Gabrielle Moss talk all the good elements of The New Jessica and Sweet Valley as a whole — escapism, fashion, and hilarity — as well as the bad — privileged behavior, disturbing plotlines, and seriously problematic language. Gabrielle is the author of Paperback Crush and Glop. Follow her on Twitter (@Gaby_Moss)!
