They're Fetishizing The Bibas Kids' Red Hair To Sell Genocide To White Westerners The aggressive fetishization of the red hair of Ariel and Kfir Bibas is part of an absolutely disgusting war propaganda campaign aimed at white westerners, and we need to talk about it. Reading by Tim Foley.
Travel back to a time before the world of New Century was formed, as this reimagining of Bram Stoker's Dracula bridges the past and the future of the series. This tale absolutely serves as a standalone, hot-blooded, Gothic opera, but it also forms an unexpected trilogy with the first book in the series; Let Them Go and another at the tail end of Phase 2; Nightfall of the Wendigo. A wandering woman wakes on a dark Halloween in Eastern Europe, 1875 with no memory of the past week and a journal with pages torn out. A young noblewoman in fifteenth century Carpathia is put to the test, and begins a new dynasty that will transform her entire world… perhaps others too. This is an extraordinary story on many levels – about the power and sanctuary of music, about what it took for bands to get noticed in the ‘70s, about how a teenager obsessed with King Crimson eventually joined the band and about the struggles of “a rabid Henry Cow fan trying to get on Top of the Pops”. Jakko Jakszyk is a fabulous storyteller, both in his memoir ‘Who's the Boy With The Lovely Hair?' and on this podcast with the two of us. Among the highlights … … two things musicians need to know. … why the divisive appeal of music and comedy is so similar. … life in a band where “Stravinsky meets the Barron Knights”. … “Who'll be the singing Jack Russell?” Doing voice-overs as a piece of toast and a baked potato with a Yorkshire accent. ... the quaint Englishness of Soft Machine, Caravan and King Crimson and why they were like “a holiday resort no-one knew about”. … why there are even more idiots in advertising than the music business. … the rigours of the Melody Maker Folk Rock Contest, aged 17, judged by Tommy Vance, Bob Harris and Brian May of Queen. … the militant wing of the Adrian Belew Fan Club. … Dave Robinson's sage advice after telling him he was “unfashionably heterosexual”. ... why Robert Fripp is more Miles Davis than Frank Zappa and the longest audition in history. …the complications of the King Crimson reunion caused by one person who shall remain nameless – “though let's call him Greg Lake”. … “two screaming lead guitars and a trumpet, what could possibly go wrong?” … and working with Pete Sinfield, Peter Hawkins, Sam Brown and Nigel Planer. Jared, Oriana and Ned discuss Ned's choice of topic: Terry Brooks's debut novel The Sword of Shannara. Released in 1977 after the author had been working on it for almost a decade, The Sword of Shannara became a massive publishing success for its then-new imprint Del Rey Books, helping to establish the viability of fantasy literature as a steady and profitable part of the book business as a whole, as well as starting Brooks's continuing writing career with a bang. At the same time, more than a few voices said in response to that success and the book itself that it was pretty clearly using The Lord of the Rings as a model, its own author having now been conveniently dead for a few years at the time of publication. This, as it happens, is a massive understatement – and more to the point it is an absolutely awful book, the success of which seen through the eyes of nearly fifty years later is almost impossible to imagine given both the expansion of the field in general and the fact that Tolkien is no longer solely the lodestone for young writers to look towards. What makes Brooks's work so remarkably un-Tolkien-like despite taking on many of its trappings, and are those trappings used well to start with? How does Brooks's desire to create a rollicking adventure story/page-turner play out in terms of actual story dynamics, character development and other rather important things a good book should have? How do the key themes of Tolkien in general not apply – or rather, get heavily misapplied or transformed – in Brooks's vision of a post-apocalyptic fantasy world? And do Jared and Oriana still wish Ned ill fortune for having made them read this? (Audibly so, yes.)Show Notes.Jared's doodle. If only the book were this exciting. Five years indeed! If you want the full story of how we all got started, as mentioned, Ned talks about that in the introduction to our live episode aka Episode 50 from last year. The big news about The Collected Poems of J.R.R. Sure is a book!Dan Sinykin's 2023 Slate article “The Man Who Invented Fantasy,” which details Lester Del Rey's career and role in bringing Brooks to wider attention as part of his overall plans for Del Rey with his wife Judy-Lynn. This week, Nigel and Tazziii take a stroll through South London for a deep dive into the refreshing Rom-Com, Rye Lane, (starting at 29:47) with Presenter and Broadcaster Shay Thompson. We revel in this positive and recognisable depiction of love in one of London's lesser-known boroughs when it comes to mainstream representation. Despite a narrative built on familiar genre underpinnings, Raine Allen-Miller manages to keep things feeling fresh in her feature directorial debut. We cover its infinitely relatable characters and appreciate role reversals in a sharp and timely telling of finding hope when it comes to love. This week's storytelling tip is all about using foil characters in your story. Other stories we're enjoying include: Baldur's Gate 3, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Witch and the Beast, Snow White with the Red Hair, Halo Infinite, Futurama, Andor, and Dune: Part Two.

FedEx purchased Kinko's for 2+ Billion Dollars. Kinko's doesn't exist any more, but I think we can all agree that Paul Orfelea built an empire. Dave Young: Welcome to The Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not so secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom and pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector, and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is, well, it's us, but we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients. So here's one of those. [Colair Cooling & Heating Ad] Dave Young: Welcome to The Empire Builders Podcast. Dave Young here with Stephen Semple. And we were talking about empires. We're talking about things that started small and ended up really darn big. And Stephen whispered today's topic into my ear just as we were counting down, and it's like, "Man, we've been on a run of nostalgic trips to our youthful times." Stephen Semple: That's kind of true, isn't it? I hadn't thought about that. But yeah, we kind of have been. Dave Young: So today we're talking about Kinko's. Kinko's, the copier place. Stephen Semple: Kinko's the copier place. Dave Young: If you didn't have a photocopier at your disposal, you had to find a Kinko's. That was it. That was your only other choice. Or find a print shop and wait a couple weeks. Stephen Semple: And it's easy because Kinko's sort of isn't around any longer. It'd be easy to go, oh, well, they failed, and no, they didn't. The reason why they disappeared was that in February of 2004, they were bought by FedEx for $2.4 billion. So when you look at all these FedEx stores, they were Kinko's that basically FedEx took over. When you sell something for 2.4 billion, I call that an empire. Dave Young: I think so. I think so. How did they get started, and when? Stephen Semple: They basically started back in 1969, 1970 is sort of the starting point. It was founded by Paul Orfalea, and he started literally with 100 square foot shop across street from the University of California. And you got to remember, back then, photocopiers were really large. So his 100 square foot store, customers couldn't come in. Dave Young: That's mostly a photocopier, in those days. Stephen Semple: Customers would come up to the window and they would basically hand the stuff and it'd be copied and it would hand it back out the window. There was no room for customers in 100 square foot shop. Dave Young: Young people right now thinking about the size of a photocopier. When you're talking 1970s, think of your deep freeze in the garage and add about a foot to the height of it, a chest type deep freezer. And I mean, this was serious technology, super expensive piece of equipment, but up until things like this, the only way to get a copy of anything was to run a piece of carbon paper through your typewriter with the original. Stephen Semple: Well, here's how innovative photocopying was. And it wasn't originally called photocopying. It was originally called Xerography. That's the actual technical name for it, which is the reason why. It also then became known as Xeroxing things, but- Dave Young: Making a Xerox. Stephen Semple: And then for a bunch of reasons evolved in the photocopying, but I wish I remember which Bond film it was, but there was one of the really old Bond films where 007 breaks into an office, they lift up a photocopier from a crane and put it over so that he can photocopy some of these secret documents. When it's being done in a Bond film, it's amazing technology. Today we find it almost laughable. But going back to Paul, so Paul grew up being very business-minded. His whole family were entrepreneurs. His dad made clothes, he had uncles with various businesses with restaurants and all sorts of things. He enjoyed college,

Known among the Nazis as "the girl with the red hair," Hannie Schaft was a resistance fighter so deadly that Adolf Hitler personally ordered her capture. She was a 24-year-old Dutch student when the Nazi forces occupied the Netherlands in 1940. Fuelled by a desire to protect her country, Hannie became an integral part of the Dutch Resistance, at a time when speaking out was dangerous and resistance could cost lives, Hannie displayed unyielding courage and determination. She and other women fighters were able to transport weapons in bicycle baskets, plant bombs and eventually lure Nazi officials and conspirators into honeytraps before assassinating them, as most didn't believe women were capable of committing such acts. She was eventually caught, tortured and executed. Her life and bravery were extraordinary and historian and historical novelist Buzzy Jackson joins Dan to tell Hannie's incredible story. Her life is the subject of Buzzy's new novel 'The Girl with the Red Hair.'Produced by Mariana Des Forges and edited by Dougal PatmoreDiscover the past on History Hit with ad-free original podcasts and documentaries released weekly presented by world renowned historians like Dan Snow, Suzannah Lipscomb, Lucy Worsley, Matt Lewis, Tristan Hughes and more.Get 50% off your first 3 months with code DANSNOW. You don't get second chances when it comes to hair painting redheads. Clients don't give you a second chance. If you f**k up a client's red or copper they don't come back. They don't refer their friends to you. Redheads rebook every 6 weeks for colour retouches as opposed to Balayage clients every 6 months. What is the cost to your salon business if you don't know how to confidently offer hair painting for redheads? It only takes one unhappy redhead to ruin your reputation. In this episode, we're talking about the 3 most FAQs from 1,000 Hairdressers (in my recent online masterclasses) about how to achieve copper haircolour without red or root glow. I'm sharing all the juicy details with you from my recent online masterclasses with the answers for these 3 questions asked by hairdressers and salon owners of all levels of experience from all over the world. 3 FAQ answered in this podcast: How do I create a Classic Copper for a “natural-looking” hair colour that clients will love? How can I avoid Red hot roots with Copper hair colours? How can I get grey coverage for redheads without Root Glow or banding? Listen to EPISODE 139 of the Colour Kristina Talks Podcast for Hairdressers to discover the answers with me. --------------------------------- Want to learn more? Welcome to November 5, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate standing out in a crowd and our National mammal. The genetic trait that causes red hair is found in only two percent of the population, so those of us with natural red have no trouble standing out. If you have both red hair and blue eyes then you are in a 1 percent category and chances are you are also left handed. And while redheads have a reputation for being feisty and stubborn we are also natural born leaders. This may have more to do with getting picked on or singled out in life and learning quickly to defend ourselves. Which seems to have worked well for Carrot Top, Carol Burnett, Ron Howard and Lucille Ball. On National Love Your Red Hair Day celebrate this unique trait and the bonus of standing out in a crowd. You may think of the majestic bison as existing only in the Great Plains. In fact they can be found in all 50 states. This is good news if you plan to see one today while celebrating National Play Outside Day, but be careful! Weighing in at nearly 2000 pounds they are the largest land mammal in North America. You should know that they can run almost 45 miles an hour and can jump nearly six vertical feet! Here in North Dakota their thick fur comes in handy for its insulation against the cold. The animal can be covered in snow that will not melt thanks to a coat that is ten times more hairy than cattle. Bison have played a central role in the livelihood of Native Americans and because of their impact on our culture and environment they are now protected as our National Mammal. On National Bison Day, we celebrate this essential part of our Nation's history. I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day.
