Natalie sits down with Tarot Reader and Astrologer, Maisy Bristol to discuss Tarot, it's correlation to Astrology, and Maisy's own paranormal experiences.Maisy Bristol is a sought-after tarot reader and astrologer who guides individuals toward clarity and self-development. Specializing in relationships, trauma healing, mental health, and life choices, her one-on-one readings offer a brighter, lighter, and more colloquial tone. This encourages her clients to dial into their own inner wisdom and view life changes with a more positive outlook. In Maisy's mind, there is always a better future waiting for us—which differentiates her from the typical reader. Maisy began working with tarot at the age of 15, when she found an old, ratted Rider-Waite deck lying around her house. This mild interest developed into a hobby which then blossomed into the profession that she loves. In addition to tarot, Maisy offers birth chart and synastry astrological readings. She also offers a personalized tarot + astrology subscription service that aims to help clients accomplish their personal goals. Maisy's mystical work has been featured in Bustle, Well + Good, MindBodyGreen, Marie Claire, Refinery29, POPSUGAR, New York Magazine, and more. She's also launched her first-ever tarot deck, Tempest Tarot Deck — a creation that could have only manifested due to her love of mythological sea tales and lore. This year, she also set up Tarotpy, a tarot + astrology mental health subscription program. Each month, Maisy targets specific mental health goals from people in her online community.Connect with Maisy on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/tarotbymaisy/

In this episode, I'll cover a case that sparked a national debate and shone a spotlight on discrepancies in the justice system regarding the treatment and rights of survivors of sexual assault. Brock Turner was a first-year student at Stanford University when he was accused of sexually assaulting a young woman. The media portrayal of the perpetrator and the leniency he received at sentencing would fuel public outrage regarding this highly publicized case.  Resources:  Know My Name: A Memoir, Chanel Miller, Penguin Books, 2019.  “Know My Name: Chanel Miller's Story”, 60 Minutes, CBS, May 3, 2021. https://youtu.be/PTvHn2_0evo “Sentence in Stanford Assault Case Sparks Outrage”, Richard Gonzalez, NPR, June 6, 2016. “Thes Brock Turner Headlines are Beyond Tone Deaf”, Julie Sprankles, Bustle.com, June 6, 2016.  “Sexual assault victim Chanel Miller finally met the Swedish graduate students who helped save her from Brock Turner”, Kelly McLaughlin, Insider.com, September 23, 2019. “‘I Can Always Draw My Way Out of a Feeling': Artist and Author Chanel Miller on Why Doodling Is Her Essential Emotional Outlet”, Naomi Rea, Artnet.com, March 31, 2021.  “Brock Turner's life in 2022 – The convicted sexual offender lives and works in Ohio”, Brad Witter, VoxBliss.com, Jan 13, 2022. “The judge who was recalled over the Brock Turner case was fired from his new job as a high-school girls tennis coach”, Ashley Collman, Insider.com, Sept 12, 2019.  Sponsors: Best Fiends - Download for FREE today on the App Store or Google Play. Most of us at one time or another might have heard the saying, “great minds think alike.” Perhaps our colleagues have said it when collectively the same decision is made, or an exceptional idea is brainstormed in a group. But do great minds think alike, or do great minds think differently? In today's episode, hosts Christine Bilbrey and Jamie Moore welcome Haley Moss, author of Great Minds Think Differently: Neurodiversity for Lawyers and Other Professionals. We discuss how having a better understanding of neurodivergence can help lawyers foster positive relationships with their colleagues and help them work more effectively with the clients they serve.  About Haley Moss:Diagnosed with autism at the age of three, Haley Moss's parents were told that she might not ever finish high school or earn a driver's license. Today she is a lawyer, neurodiversity expert, keynote speaker, educator, and the author of four books that guide neurodivergent individuals through professional and personal challenges. Haley is a consultant to top corporations and nonprofits that seek her guidance in creating a diverse workplace, and a sought-after commentator on disability rights and the Americans With Disabilities Act.The first openly autistic lawyer in Florida, Haley's books include “Great Minds Think Differently: Neurodiversity for Lawyers and Other Professionals” (ABA Book Publishing; June 2021), “The Young Autistic Adult's Independence Handbook” (Jessica Kingsley Publishers; November 2021), “A Freshman Survival Guide for College Students With Autism Spectrum Disorders” (Jessica Kingsley Publishers; October 2014), and “Middle School — The Stuff Nobody Tells You About: A Teenage Girl With High-Functioning Autism Shares Her Experiences” (AAPC Publishing; March 2010) Her articles have appeared in outlets including the Washington Post, Teen Vogue, GQ, Bustle, Fast Company, Law 360 Pulse, and the ABA Journal.Haley earned her law degree from the University of Miami School of Law with numerous honors. Sex is one of those subjects that many people are afraid to openly discuss in public, let alone on TikTok for anyone to see, but some sexologists are stepping into this territory, making history, and going viral. In this episode, I talk with Jessica Cline, a board-certified sexologist, travel therapist, and "sexpert" influencer on TikTok, about embodying openness on the level of "the things I talk about with my friends, I put out there." She shares her story and philosophy on social media and talking about sex, and how that has allowed others to open up conversations and get support on topics that many people are afraid to bring up. She also shares how this openness has led to a booming career with many opportunities to work with major brands, projects, and celebrities. More about Jessica (phased by her in the most perfect way): I'm a double board-certified sexologist—yes, that's a real job and a degree.

Imagine you're snuggled into bed, glass of water by your side, book in hand, phone on vibrate. Something across the room catches your eye. Movement, fast, a blur. Then you make out a distinct human shaped shadow move past the far wall. Was it a person? But no one else is home. Could it have been your imagination? Was it a ghost? Chances are it was another encounter with a spreading phenomenon – apparitions that've come to be known as shadow people or shadow beings. Go on TikTok or Instagram and you'll see what I mean about widespread! Why has the occurrence become so common as of late? Is it because experiencers are less stigmatized and ostracized so they are telling their stories more often? Could be. Or are these shadow beings somehow connected with the collective consciousness and the tumultuous times since March 2020 have been a perfect Petri dish to create many more shadow people? We will also dive into the strange link between shadow people and sleep paralysis! In the episode I also tell you about the recent Jinn sighting I had at the grocery store. I kid you not. The Writing Coach Podcast with Rebecca L. Weber

Borrow from yourself. Borrow from what works. Borrow from the non-writing parts of your life to inform your writing and freelancing. We have a tendency to notice where we've failed or not figured things out, and then we continue down that pathway looking for examples to keep the pattern going. When we intentionally look for things we've done well or learned in one area of our lives, we can instead build an alternative pattern that reinforces a foundation of what works.

Alicia is so open about her experience finding the work that she does today, she shares her struggle in making the decision to pivot away from her original plans of law school and public service and following a different path.  We also discuss her book and why if we had to choose between success and likability, we should choose success because likability is never guaranteed. She shares her own experience on wanting to be liked and what she found out during the research for her book. As someone who has always wanted to be liked, this conversation really resonated with me. Should you pitch travel story ideas before or after you have a notebook full of notes? In theory, you can do it successfully either way. You could do a little research and pre-reporting, pitch, get an assignment, schedule your interviews and be confident out in the field knowing who you're writing for and what your angle is. Or you could set off on the trip, be open to what's around you, reflect on it, and pitch when you get home and then get your assignment. And let's face it. You could also pitch and face silence or rejection either before the trip or after the trip. If you knew it was going to work out either way, which would you prefer?

Side hustles are a great way to get to your financial goals quickly, especially having that extra money you can put into investing. But how do you find balance and make sure you still have time for things that really matter? In this episode, Andresa and special guest host Mandy McAllister are joined by Sharon Tseung who has achieved financial freedom through side hustles and investing in real estate. Sharon talks about generating cash flow and protecting her portfolio through multiple streams of income, building her brand on social media, and growing her business through outsourcing. Sharon Tseung is a 6-figure entrepreneur and investor who teaches people how to make passive income towards financial freedom through her blog, YouTube channel, TikTok, and Instagram. She has been featured on Business Insider, Entrepreneur, Yahoo Finance, Bustle, Fast Company, and other notable websites. In the past, she graduated from UC Berkeley and worked in Marketing for 10 years at Google and other startups. Sharon quit her job and traveled the world as a digital nomad for 2 years, all while growing multiple passive income streams.Quotes• “Increasing my income with all these other side hustles is giving me passive income. I had multiple income streams working for me that allowed me to grow the amount of money to put back into real estate.” (13:32-13:43)• “Every one of these income streams works. It's just a matter of which one you have time for and which one you're more passionate about.” (14:51-14:58)• “I think the good thing is if something doesn't pan out with these cheaper properties, I can still have it cash flow with renting it out long term or doing a midterm with it.” (16:15-16:24)• “Short-form video can really build up your personal brand… So if your content has value, it's going to spread.” (19:44-20:02)• “So hiring out anything you don't have time for is really crucial for saving time and making sure you're focusing on the right thing.” (22:58-23:07)• “'I'm trying to have someone work in the business while I work on the business. The Writing Coach Podcast with Rebecca L. Weber

Have you ever been ashamed of the rate you accept for a freelance job? Ever talked to another freelance writer who felt that way? Have you ever heard someone who disapproves or criticizes a writer for their fees? Rates shaming is when somebody reprimands or reproves a writer for rates of which they should be ashamed. This can happen when the rate is perceived as too low OR too high. It can happen externally (e.g. somebody else in a writer group) OR internally (that voice in your head judging you). The one thing that's constant is that it's never the best route to an honest discussion about what you can charge as a freelancer. Shame leads to freelancers going underground, not transparently sharing their earnings, and feeling disrespected and disconnected. Pretty much nothing good happens from rates shaming. Today let's look at some examples, misconceptions about shame and shaming, and mindset shifts that are genuinely empowering.

This is a followup talk on applying the concepts introduced earlier this week in Episode 191, Time passing. Do you believe you have enough time to do the things that matter most in your writing life?

The Writing Coach Podcast with Rebecca L. Weber

How you think about time—such as if you have enough, not enough, or plenty of it—impacts what you create in your writing life. Many writers credit time as necessary for their skills, clients, or assignment quality to improve.  An overemphasis on time passing to become a better freelancer isn't useful or accurate, and can be a disempowering framework. Time passing isn't the important factor in if I learn or complete something; often time passes and we don't learn or complete our writing. Ironically, the refrain of “I need more time to pitch” (or finish the current assignment or freewrite or work on a book or whatever it is) often creates a sense of frustration, scarcity, urgency, or fear. In turn, the writers spends less or no extra time.  Because if you don't have enough time, why bother? If the requirement for effective pitching was more time, I'd be all for it. But it's simply not the missing ingredient. Time happens either way: if you write the pitch or not, time goes by. If you could only write a pitch effectively or efficiently, you'd almost certainly opt for a good slow pitch over a quick one that doesn't get assigned.  Time isn't the missing element. Skill, clarify, confidence, practice, and prioritization are all more accurate assessments about what to focus on.

Whether your articles are published online or in print, you need to make them readily available for potential clients to read online. Simply having a list of links isn't sufficient. Sites reorganize and your links go bad; your piece gets pulled or the publication closes; and paywalls prohibit access. Clips that look great on paper need different treatment. In this episode, we look at practical tools that solve how to archive freelance articles published online and how to create digital copies of paper clips.

In a world where trust in institutions and in news is falling and the role of influencers is growing, finding the connective tissue between you and your audience is key to, well, connecting.  To establish a rapport, which can if nourished, lead to trust, which can lead to a genuine connection. And for the creator to go further, to push deeper, to find meaning and bearing in places we as consumers or readers or listeners might not otherwise look or expect, like in local news or video game reviews or recipes. I think that matters a lot. We're not only losing trust but feeling that loss. With so much coming at us, we notice and feel a lack of connection, we feel adrift and unmoored. I am moved by people whose work and art I can connect with, whether I'm seeking it out or not. Because connection matters. Who we get our COVID information or our weather forecasts from matters, but also who helps us understand where we can find comfort, and why. My guest today is Swapna Krishna. Swapna is a writer and journalist covering space, science, tech, and pop culture. She writes everywhere from Fast Company to StarWars.com, from StarTrek.com to Business Insider, the LA Times, Bitch Magazine, Bustle, Mental Floss, and more. She's appeared on a million excellent podcasts, at Comic-Con, and is the co-host of her own show, the Desi Geek Girls podcast, and the new host of PBS's show Far Out. Swapna often writes some of the most empathetic tech and pop culture commentary on the web. She has this unique ability to say “this is what this big thing means to me” and make you feel like “yes, me too!” or “Wait I didn't think about that”. We have very different backgrounds and lives but I trust her writing and thoroughly enjoy her new show, and her efforts to try and meet people where they are, on science issues and pop culture fandoms big and small. ----------- Have feedback or questions? http://www.twitter.com/importantnotimp (Tweet us), or send a message to questions@importantnotimportant.com New here?
