The movie "Before I Fall" - Let Go of Thinking for Yourself with David Hoffmeister.Today's movie is a looper movie given to help you wake up because it shows you your mistakes. The only mistake you're making is trying to hold on to the past, and when you try to hold on to the past, you repeat it and don't let it go. But Jesus wants us to forgive the past and recognize that it's already gone. So when we try to loop it, we're trying to keep it going, and Jesus is like, you're not going to wake up if you keep looping time because the ego is time. It's the belief that separation is real. So if you keep making the same mistake in the present moment, not listening to the voice of the Holy Spirit, only listening to your past learning, you're going nowhere. You're just going to stay stuck in the illusion of time. But if you follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit, you're going to get happier and happier, and you're going to be like me, where you can scrape me off the ceiling, you know, just having a happy, happy, happy life. Your dream becomes happy because you don't feel at the mercy of the dream anymore. You're dreaming it. You're not at the mercy of the dream. You're the dreamer of the dream. That's the whole point of A Course in Miracles and this movie to show you. You're the dreamer. Find out how to let go of thinking for yourself as David Hoffmeister uses powerful ACIM teachings and the movie "Before I Fall" as an example of how to do so! Way back in 1993, there was no way of knowing that Groundhog Day would turn out to be one of the most influential movies. Its formula has been repeated by multiple movies in multiple genres. We actually reviewed ten different movies on the podcast that followed this formula including the classic Groundhog Day. We call them time loop movies because it is about at least one character that is stuck in a day that continues to repeat over and over. One day we asked ourselves what are the best of this little subgenre? How would we rank each of these movies? This week we do exactly that as both Scott and I present our ranking of the ten major time loop movies that we've reviewed in past episodes. It is a bit of a different episode, but we still had a blast revisiting these pictures. As always, we had a great time recording this show and we really hope you love it. I was thrilled when Howard Paar agreed to talk with me about his new novel Top Rankin' (out May 11, 2021 on Rare Bird). Howard has had (and continues to have) an incredible career in the music business. He primarily works as a music supervisor for major motion pictures. Click HERE to learn more about Howard's amazing work in music. Top Rankin' is a ska noir novel. I've never read anything quite like it and I loved it for that. It combines so many things that I have a passion for (noir, ska & punk music, etc.) and does it well! When you read Top Rankin' make sure you play it's accompanying Spotify playlist. Fantastic music that follows the narrative of the book! Thanks for listening! Kyler Bingham @saltlakedirt --- "Howard Paar is an award winning music supervisor who was born and raised in London before continuing his career in Los Angeles. He has won Guild Of Music Supervisors Awards in 2016, 2017, 2018 & 2020 respectively for Diary Of A Teenage Girl, 20th Century Women, Before I Fall and Native Son. He is a proud member of the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences Class of 2017." (HowardPaar.com)

Perhaps the second time is the charm? After a *not great* experience  with Yoon's first book Everything, Everything (see previous episode), Brenna and Joe tackle her most recent text, which balances a timely discussion and racism, immigration and deportation with a falling-in-love-in-one-day perfect date. Brenna is much more in favour of the book, especially Natasha's Jamaican background and Yoon's playful side-story telling. Joe is less enthused with Daniel's Korean storyline, which he argues feels too familiar, as well as the narrative confines of the single day premise. What we can both agree upon is that the film, particularly Tracy Oliver's screenplay, fundamentally misunderstands the book. Despite Russo-Young (previous episode Before I Fall)'s gorgeous lensing of New York, the film proves to be a misfire due to a lack of chemistry between leads Yara Shahidi and Charles Melton, its issues with colourism casting and the fumbling of the book's key Karaoke scene.Wanna connect with the show? Brenna and Joe aren't feeling quite themselves - in fact they may be experiencing an out of body event as a result of reading David Levithan's 2012 book Every Day and screening Michael Sucsy's 2018 film adaptation. Or perhaps it is simply that they are struggling with pronouns and personhood as a result of A's constantly changing bodies. In addition to callbacks to the repetitive cycles of Before I Fall and Everything, Everything, Brenna and Joe discuss how the book, like Adam Silvera's writing, fails to understand its own appeal. Thankfully the film adaptation makes a strong narrative choice that helps to strengthen its storytelling ability. Also on the table: Brenna's disdain for the book's horrifically awful use of a fat body as a plot device, and the pair's mixed feelings about the film's diversity (yay) of almost uniformly rich, model beautiful characters (boo). In homework: Brenna catches up on Gossip Girl and Joe checks out Amy Rose Capetta's queer-and-body positive The Lost Coast. Wanna connect with the show? Cecily Wolfe writes character-driven fiction for teen and adult readers. She is a librarian who lives and works in Cleveland, Ohio, and the author of That Night, a book perfect for fans of Thirteen Reasons Why or Before I Fall. Drug overdoses don't happen to girls with good grades and athletic talent, with longtime friends and a devoted boyfriend. Or do they? When high school seniors Cassidy and Sarah, along with Kayla's boyfriend Paul, discover their best friend Kayla unconscious at a party, the idea that they have lost her to a heroin overdose is unbelievable. She didn't use drugs, except the pain medicine prescribed for a soccer injury, and she had no reason to accept any from a stranger. The month that follows her death is filled with anxiety, sadness, frustration, and questions. Answers won't bring Kayla back, however, so as Cass and Sarah struggle with the insensitive but predictable behavior of parents, classmates, and teachers, Paul falls into a depression that leads him down a dangerous path. With Kayla's younger sister Mia in mind, the three of them work towards forging ahead without the girl who has held them together since elementary school. Her natural talent shines equally bright in heart-wrenching dramas such as “Before I Fall” and wild comedies like “The Year of Spectacular Men.” And now she has delivered a rom-com-pantheon-worthy performance opposite Glen Powell in the Netflix film “Set It Up.” We talk about “process and not outcome," being “right for a part and not just liking it,” and the “miracle” (my word) of The Pizza Scene. To say Zoey Deutch is about to be a giant star somehow belittles the power and artistry I believe she possesses. Instead, allow me to introduce her with one word I use sparingly: Maestro.

Instead, keep your head held up high and look to the heavens, for there is where your heart has been sent itself and those who passed will live inside our hearts forever. I'm sorry to hear that. I am so sorry for your loss, please send my best regards to your family. My condolences... My deepest condolences to you and your family.... I am sure he/she is at a better place now.............. Don't take your life too seriously. No one here gets out alive. It's that heart of gold & stardust soul that makes you beautiful.

Movie Meltdown - Episode 403 This week we are coming to you "live" from Indy PopCon... where we experience lots of different aspects of our geek pop culture. But most importantly, we make a date... to sit down and talk with Phil Lamarr. You probably know Phil from his ill-fated appearance in Pulp Fiction, or his years of working on MadTV, or his numerous characters on shows like Futurama, Justice League, Samurai Jack, Static Shock, Star Wars: The Clone Wars and so many others. Join us as we talk with Phil about growing up in L.A., about working with Quentin Tarantino, about getting into the voice-over industry, about saving Spider-Man from falling off a train, about crazy movie theories... plus his thoughts on the somewhat recent popularity of super hero movies. And while we hang out with our new found dragonfly friend, we also discuss... a yo yo festival, The Girl with All the Gifts, Before I Fall, Doctor Strange, Rick and Morty, enamel pins, Sam Raimi, he is dancing like nobody is watching, I was totally assaulted in the face, doing improv, while in utero, showing undercarriage, just another tow-headed guy in a letterman's jacket, it's the best... and worst thing I've ever seen, sleeveless shirt... half mullet, idiots who get in way over their heads, learning guinea pigs, Matt Groening, kids who had agents, they couldn't give notes, if it was any shorter it would be a belt, Julia Sweeney, if Groundhog Day and a horror movie had a baby, three characters for the price of one, in most movies you can't add an act, the 800 pound gorilla... that built your house, my Mr. T Summer job, corporatization of media, killing your Tamagotchi, Michael Cimino in 70mm, free stylin' with no protection, everyone is a glorified temp, pulling the South Park card, Second City, Robert Zemeckis, they are the people who leave, the Kudrow moment, fame has become popularity, let's be gangsters, John Dykstra, wearing a shirt with your own face on it, it's not about the medium... it's about the quality, gangsters in Hollywood, gladiator school, you have a generation now who have grown up watching webcams, the audience is part of the show, it is a moving target, The Jellies and the guy dancing in front of the Burger King. "...as a life philosophy the idea of just... moving forward through agreement... is the best thing you can teach somebody. In pretty much any walk of life." http://mwge.org“Before I Fall” is a movie with similarities to the movie “Groundhog Day”. The main character, Sam, is experiencing the same day over and over again, and struggles with how to escape from the loop. Like Bill Murray’s character in “Groundhog Day”, she goes through an evolution in how she chooses to use the day, until she finally realizes she must use it to be fully in service to all. Only then does she find freedom and joy.To listen to this movie commentary by David in conjunction with the movie, do the following:- Rent or obtain the movie “Before I Fall” (check YouTube or Amazon for online rentals).- Before watching the movie, listen to this recording from the beginning until the 9:21 point (9 minutes and 21 seconds into it). Then pause the recording and start the movie.- After the scene where she wakes up in her bed the second time (after the car accident scene), pause the movie, and listen to David’s commentary from 9:21 until 10:23. Then resume the movie.- After the lunchroom scene at school in which she asks her girlfriends, “Why do we hate Juliet?”, pause the movie and listen to David’s commentary from 10:23 to 19:45. Then resume the movie and watch it through to the end.- To hear David’s after-movie talk, resume this recording from 19:45 until the end.Enjoy!Recorded on May 26, 2017 at the Living Miracles Monastery in Duchesne, Utah during the Tabula Rasa Mystery School. Dave had to look after Baby Henry, so BOFCA critic Greg Vellante joins Evan and Kris for this week’s episode. After a brief game of “Get to Know Your Guest Host,” Greg leads off with BEFORE I FALL (at 7:30), the teenybopper version of GROUNDHOG DAY, which he finds forgettable despite its heart. Next Kris discusses TABLE 19 (15:04), a wedding comedy about nothing in particular that he dubs “stay together porn” for its terrible plot involving couples staying together that shouldn’t. After that, Evan and Greg rave about MY LIFE AS A ZUCCHINI (at 29:42), the touching Oscar-nominated animated film about a group of orphans who form a family. Finally, Greg fully loses his Spoilerpiece virginity by spoiling the heck out of LOGAN (at 42:06), the Wolverine movie that he describes as entertaining, unexpectedly moving, and extremely violent.

In February we spoke about (shocker) films that fell into the sphere of romance. Often a unfrotuantely derided genre, we wanted to tackle three films that showcase the diversity that can be found in them when directed by diverse talent. We talked about Alice Wu's Saving Face (2004) - a personal favorite- , Gina Prince-Bythewood's Beyond the Lights (2014) and the Jenny Slate breakout Obvious Child (2014) directed by Gillian Robespierre. What linked the three was the ability all demonstrated in building relationships for all of these characters outside of their romantic ones. For March we're doing something a little different and discussing films edited by women-specifically we're watching Faults and Mad Max: Fury Road but we'll also be talking about directors Joss Whedon, Jeff Nichols and Martin Scorsese who have all primarily relied on female talent in editing their films. We will also take a look and Before I Fall-the big March release for a woman directed film. Watch along with us and make sure to catch the coversation next month! Happy listening :)

One of the exciting byproducts of visiting a film festival like Sundance is getting a sneak peek at the next big thing, whether it be a filmmaker or an actor. Certainly this year was no exception with relative unknowns like Chante Adams (“Roxanne Roxanne”) and Danielle Macdonald (“Patti Cake$”) breaking through in a big way.  Then there’s the young talent, already established, but still on the rise. That’s what this week’s “Happy Sad Confused” delivers with four conversations with some of the best and the brightest actors working today, each making a splash at Sundance this year. Tavi Gevinson is only 20 years old, but already boasts an eclectic list of accomplishments, from writer and fashion maven to magazine editor. It’s her acting career however that is the focus of this conversation, from her stage work in “The Crucible” to her Sundance debut, “Person to Person”. Returning to the podcast on this episode is the charming and self-deprecating Dave Franco, whose Sundance flick “The Little Hours” teams him up with Aubrey Plaza, John C. Reilly, and real-life fiancé Alison Brie. Franco talks about his absurdly awkward sex scenes, being objectified, and still finds time to rib Josh for never having seen “The Room”.  Another returning guest and Sundance veteran at just 25 is Logan Lerman, starring in the ambitious drama, “Sidney Hall”. Lerman again proves he’s the real deal in this heartbreaking story of a young writer grappling with success, fame, and his own demons.  Finally, Josh welcomes a newcomer to “Happy Sad Confused” in Zoey Deutch, making her Sundance debut with two films, “Rebel in the Rye” (she stars as Oona O’Neill opposite Nicholas Hoult’s JD Salinger) and “Before I Fall”, a sort of dramatic “Groundhog Day” by way of YA that’s garnered great reviews in advance of it’s March 3rd opening.  Learn more about your ad choices. Lauren Oliver, the New York Times bestselling author of the Delirium trilogy, Before I Fall, and Panic, discusses her new novel ROOMS with @HarperAudio_US producer Caitlin Garing. This episode also includes an excerpt from the audio edition which is performed by Orlagh Cassidy, Barbara Caruso, Elizabeth Evans, Noah Galvin, and Cynthia Darlow. ABOUT ROOMS After a number of highly acclaimed New York Times bestsellers, including the Delirium trilogy and the standalone novels Before I Fall and Panic, Lauren Oliver returns with a spellbinding tale that confirms her place as one of our finest storytellers. Fueled by the same inspired feel for plot and character that drew readers to Oliver's earlier works, Rooms is a mesmerizing and suspenseful story of guilt, love, and family secrets. Estranged patriarch Richard Walker has died, leaving behind a country house full of rooms packed with the detritus of a lifetime. His alienated family—bitter ex-wife Caroline, troubled teenage son Trenton, and unforgiving daughter Minna—have arrived for their inheritance. But the Walkers are not alone. Alice and Sandra, two long-dead and restless ghosts, linger within the house's claustrophobic walls, bound eternally to its physical structure. Jostling for space and memory, they observe the family, trading barbs and reminiscences about their past lives. Though their voices cannot be heard, Alice and Sandra speak through the house itself—in the hiss of the radiator, a creak in the stairs, the dimming of a lightbulb. The living and dead are haunted by painful truths that surface with explosive force. When a new ghost appears, and Trenton begins to communicate with her, the spirit and human worlds collide—with cataclysmic results. Elegantly constructed and brilliantly paced, Rooms is an enticing and imaginative ghost story and a searing family drama that is as haunting as it is resonant.
