It was the summer of 2012. Police received a 911 call from an employee of an apartment complex, who told them that a 9 year old girl was in their office, after having run away from home. When they arrived at the office, the young girl named Emani Moss, told them she ran away from home, and didn’t want to return because her stepmother was mean, and she hated her. After hearing some more details about the rough living situation of this girl, they visited the home she had run away from. But after some questioning, they determined she wasn’t in danger and left her right back where she started. This decision would have terrible consequences for the young girl. The 1970s are sometimes hailed as the true dawn of young-adult literature, the decade when authors like Judy Blume and Lois Lowry showed that teen readers were worth taking seriously. Decades later, J.K. Rowling revolutionized YA, permanently broadening its appeal to adults. But teen fiction of the '80s and '90s is often ignored. Bustle editor and writer Gabrielle Moss has a soft spot in her heart for what she calls the genre's "intellectual dead zone"—the era of The Baby-sitters Club, Sweet Valley High, and so many more girl-centered series. In this interview with NYPL's Gwen Glazer, Moss discusses her new book "Paperback Crush," which makes the case for why the YA fiction of the '80s and '90s shouldn't be overlooked, and why it's so much fun to revisit.

Throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s, Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield mostly made twinning look like a dream… but things are rarely as simple on the inside (LOL). In Volume 32 of Francine Pascal's beloved Sweet Valley High series, Jessica (AKA the impulsive twin) has decided that she's sick of being one of an identical pair. She takes drastic action to differentiate herself from Elizabeth (AKA the bookish twin). Hijinks ensue, relationships are tested, and everyone is essentially being the most ridiculous version of themselves. Alli and Sweet Valley High enthusiast Gabrielle Moss talk all the good elements of The New Jessica and Sweet Valley as a whole — escapism, fashion, and hilarity — as well as the bad — privileged behavior, disturbing plotlines, and seriously problematic language. It's our first episode! Do we have any idea what we're doing? Nope! Do we go off-topic at any point during this podcast? Of course! Join us as we discuss mandatory millennial podcasting, belt plugs, Ellen Hopkins, and teens wasting their drugs. Josh references a shirtless Gavin Rossdale at least twice, Jessica tarnishes her family name by sharing her first experience with alcohol, Blake suggests a new direction for a Baby-Sitters Club reboot, and Emily, as always, is the voice of reason. Shout out to Gabrielle Moss for the inspiration. Check out her book, Paperback Crush—we highly recommend it. Thanks to Blake Walker for our theme song. Listen to his band, More of That, at moreofthat.bandcamp.com Thanks for listening!

Hope you like twins, cuz this ep is full of them! Join us as we discuss everything BUT Charlotte St. John's tale of twinnapping, Red Hair (ok, we do talk about it, but it's awkward). The gang talks the Jackson Family and Red Shoe Diaries, Blake and Jessica try to remember Mulan, and Josh talks Brit Marling. There's also some Freddie Prinze, Jr. content (if you're into that) and, of course, twins. This week we referenced Gabrielle Moss's Paperback Crush—get it at your local bookstore or library for more fun content and reading recommendations. Tune in next week as we talk Lois Duncan's controversial take on feminism, Daughters of Eve. You can follow us on Instagram @areyoutherepod or email us at areyoutherepodcast@gmail.com.
