I'm still enjoying this series, in which everything the main character has thought to be true about his life and world unravels as he discovered how much more lies outside the shadowy boundaries of his life. (listening to with Tanner): Brian's Hunt—the final book in the survival classic series that developed after Hatchet. Since I last wrote, we also listened to The River, Brian's Winter, and Brian's Return. We also continued our Gary Paulsen festival by listening to Northwind, which is about a Viking-era type of boy who has to survive alone on the sea.(listening to by self): Sisters in the Wind—I've barely begun this one, as I only recently finished listening to Warrior Girl, Unearthed. This is the third book following Firekeeper's Daughter, but it actually takes place temporally between the events of Firekeeper and Warrior Girl. I actually liked Warrior Girl, Unearthed more than Firekeeper's Daughter overall, but I was really left frustrated by the many holes in the ending. The Hatchet Forces, also known as exploitation or reaction forces, served as the primary direct-action and raid elements within MACV-SOG, providing larger platoon- and company-sized units to support small reconnaissance teams or conduct independent strikes against North Vietnamese logistics along the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Composed of a handful of elite U.S. Special Forces personnel leading indigenous troops—primarily Montagnards, Nungs, and South Vietnamese commandos—these units executed ambushes, search-and-destroy missions, prisoner snatches, and rapid reinforcements in denied territories of Laos, Cambodia, and North Vietnam. Pedra Branca hosts a 2.2 million ounce resource grading 1.08 g/t on a 2P+gold basis. Comparable peers: Stillwater Critical Minerals with its Stillwater West project in Montana, and Generation Mining advancing an Ontario project, carry resource bases of approximately 3 million ounces and trade at market capitalisations of $100–200 million. ValOre sits at approximately $26 million. That is a valuation gap that invites scrutiny, and CEO Nick Smart's explanation for it is credible.The discount reflects two correctable problems. First, the company's prior ownership of uranium assets created market confusion about its identity as a PGE developer. That has been resolved: the Hatchet uranium properties have been sold to Future Fuels, and ValOre is now a single-asset, single-commodity company focused entirely on Pedra Branca. Second, without an economic study on file, investors cannot model the project's returns. That changes with the delivery of a Preliminary Economic Assessment, targeted for 2026 and representing the single most important near-term catalyst for the stock.Smart brings unusual technical credibility to this mandate. His background is in chemical engineering and extractive metallurgy, with 21 years spent at Anglo American in platinum and palladium operations. His focus since joining in October 2024 has been on the metallurgical and engineering programme required to underpin the PEA and early results are positive.Metallurgical test work conducted with the University of Cape Town is delivering palladium and platinum extractions of 73–74% from a hydrometallurgical leaching route designed for Pedra Branca's weathered near-surface ore. These are initial results from shake-flask testing that are expected to improve as the programme scales. An additional finding that UCT's hot caustic pre-treatment can unlock high-grade chromitite-hosted PGEs grading 6.5–8.5 g/t at surface creates optionality for high-grade feed in the early mine-life years, with potentially positive implications for early-year project economics and NPV.The macro environment provides further support. Primary platinum supply has been in structural decline since 2021, falling from over 6 million ounces to a projected 5.12 million in 2026 despite a price that has roughly doubled. With 80% of global PGE production concentrated in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Russia, the geopolitical case for supply diversification into jurisdictions like Brazil is building. Pedra Branca's near-surface, open-cast profile, existing infrastructure access, and proximity to a deep-water port position it as a potentially low-capital-intensity development relative to peers.For investors willing to act ahead of the PEA, the near-term news flow along with the interim metallurgical updates and early engineering outputs provide a series of checkpoints to monitor ahead of the binary catalyst. A Northern California killing inside a mother-in-law housing unit is under investigation as prosecutors say a man armed with a hatchet targeted his victim in a rare homicide in Lafayette. A Florida brother and sister are now under federal indictment after prosecutors say one planted an improvised explosive device at MacDill Air Force Base and both then fled the country. Sweet, sweet revenge. A subgenre best served cold, with a side of yanked intestines. It is a foundational tool for horror, both from the protagonist and antagonist perspectives. Anger, jealousy, and embarrassment create grudges that stick, and payback, she is a comin’. Listen in to our recommendations for your revenge fantasy satisfaction. In horror movies, sometimes you want to keep it simple. If your plot needs motivation… this is an easy check to cash. There are several sub-tropes here. Psychology Today lists several variants of revenge. As you might expect, revenge and justice are not simple concepts. There are different motivations and complex sources for the desire for payback. We tried to marry up the psychological categories to how they get executed in horror films: Simple or direct Revenge: An eye for an eye. You killed or disfigured me, now I'm back, bitches! MUAAAAHHAHAHAHA! (Slash, slash, slash… screaming ensues) This is the staple of the franchise serial-killer movies. Candyman, Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Burning, Slaughter High, Hatchet, Ghost Story, I Know What You Did Last Summer This also applies to revenge for the loss of a loved one. NOOOOOOO! You killed my father! Now you're gonna pay! I Saw the Devil, Mandy, Redux Redux, Orca, and Sayara Constructive or transformative Revenge: Channeling pain into self-improvement and escaping the victim role. The Rape Revenge Subtrope lands here, with all of its trigger-ridden justice. Misogeny or empowerment? You make the call. Good examples: Revenge, I Spit on Your Grave, They Call Her One Eye, Last House on the Left, Teeth, Ms. 45, American Mary, Hard Candy Honor revenge: Retaliation that is intended to restore reputation or face. Restore reputation. Bullying payback often lands in this category. Who's on top now motherfucker!?   Plenty of good examples here include Carrie, Piggy, Let the Right One In, and Sissy A subset of honor revenge would be the response to betrayal. You backstabbed me.  Honor revenge is a classic trope in Westerns and Mob Movies. When used by a protagonist, it can be the central motivation. Examples: Upgrade Usually used as a plot device rather than the central theme in horror movies. What goes around, comes around. Et tu, Burke? Burke in Aliens, Ash in Alien, Rose Armitage in Get Out, Scud in Blade, Billy Loomis…All the Scream Movies Poetic or Ironic Revenge: The proper comeuppance. Yep, you had it coming. Often, this is hubris getting the better of a monologuing evil doer. Protagonists usually don’t suffer in this manner. Poetic justice, after all. The poetry comes from the villain being undone by their own actions or plans. Good Examples: Captain Ross’s grisly demise in Day of the Dead; the explosive destruction of the La Domas family in Ready or Not; the Invisible Man gets killed by his own tech in The Invisible Man; Chef Slowick goes down with his restaurant in a fiery s’mores demise in The Menu. The Saw movies have built their premise on ironic revenge, with many of the traps Jigsaw creates symbolic of the victim’s perceived flaws. Se7en is closely tied to ironic revenge, specifically piecing together misguided justice in the grisly application of sin to sinners. Collective revenge: No! Back, you fools! Stay away from me, you heathens! AAAAAAA!!! This is where the community turns on another group, or in horror movies, usually an antagonist. The mob rules! The classic example of this variant is the 1932 Frankenstein, in which the locals, brandishing torches and pitchforks, trap and kill Frankenstein’s monster. It gave birth to the cliche. Burn him! A recent great example: Weapons, where the children turn on Aunt Gladys. Other examples include Children of the Corn, The People Under the Stairs, and The Island of Lost Souls. Fantasy revenge: This is usually the domain of comedies. Sometimes it occurs in horror when the victim of bullying or aggression dreams of turning on their abuser. A twist on this would be the mad dream visions in An American Werewolf in London. Perhaps A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. It has the dream/fantasy element, but it is more of a hero’s journey than pure revenge. Horror movies themselves, as an art form, specifically REVENGE-themed horror movies, are in themselves fantasy revenge outlets. John Wick, Death Wish, Unforgiven, and many, many action movies are testosterone-fueled male revenge fantasy flicks. The rape-revenge movies is the distaff variant of the same theme. Subtle passive-aggressive revenge: Not really part of the Horror methodology. You’re in the wrong revenge shop, buddy. Horror does it directly. With an axe. This is the Woody Allen form of revenge. The Sad Truth In many revenge horror movies, revenge is often a hollow victory. The wounds still exist. The trauma lingers. Your dead wife isn’t coming back. It is a short-term dopamine high, but in many cases, you still feel hollow inside. Sometimes, proper justice gets dispensed, and the world is a better place having dispatched a monster. And we can appreciate that. Horror movie fans get to go along for the ride. Revenge, though easy to embrace, is a complex emotional rollercoaster. So much pain… and a little relief. It can make for epic storytelling, and when dipatched with bloody violence, you can understand how it resides under the horror umbrella. The company's flagship asset, the Pedra Branca PGE project in Ceará state, Brazil, hosts a 2.2 million ounce inferred resource at 1.08 grams per tonne, a resource of genuine scale in a metal category that faces structural supply constraints and growing strategic demand. For the first time, ValOre is now putting the economic framework around that resource through a comprehensive PEA programme targeted for publication by year-end 2025.The project's most distinctive feature is its development approach to the shallow, weathered upper ore body. Rather than applying conventional flotation which performs poorly on oxidised material, ValOre is developing a bioleaching process in partnership with the University of Cape Town's Department of Chemical Engineering. This technique, in which microorganisms are used to extract metals from ore, is industrially proven in copper and increasingly used in refractory gold, but has not previously been applied to a PGE deposit. Phase 1 lab-scale trials have delivered metal recoveries consistently in the high 70s percentage range, and the company has secured exclusive global rights to the jointly developed intellectual property.The implications are significant. The weathered zone accounts for roughly one-third of the total resource ounce count and sits at surface, meaning it can be mined simply and cheaply. A low-cost processing route applied to near-surface material creates the possibility of a viable early-stage operation that generates revenue and validates the process without requiring the capital commitment of a full-scale mine build. Under Brazilian mining law, a trial mining permit enables exactly this kind of phased approach, allowing the company to construct a demonstration plant targeting 10,000 to 15,000 ounces of platinum and palladium per year as a precursor to industrial-scale production of 150,000 to 200,000 ounces annually.The PEA, with a budget of approximately $4 million, is the bridge between the current exploration narrative and an investment-grade development story. It will address mining method, processing economics, capital and operating costs, and route to market for both the weathered and fresh sulphide ore bodies. Engineering consultancy Lycopodium is leading the technical work. Until the PEA is published, investors have lacked a valuation framework for Pedra Branca. Publication changes that and represents a credible re-rating catalyst.Management has taken additional steps to sharpen the investment case. The divestiture of legacy Hatchet uranium properties to Future Fuels removes a non-core distraction and concentrates the company entirely on PGE development. CEO Nick Smart brings direct in-country experience, having spent approximately six years building the Barro Alto nickel mine in Brazil for Anglo American. Brazil itself is actively positioning as a destination for critical minerals investment, with strong government and industry representation at PDAC 2026 underscoring the macro tailwind.The near-term catalysts are clear: bioleaching column test results, PEA publication, and trial mining permit application progress. Day 7 of the Brian Walshe murder trial delivered the most damning forensic testimony yet. A Massachusetts State Police DNA analyst confirmed that Ana Walshe's genetic material was recovered from a piece of human tissue found in a dumpster near Brian's mother's apartment — the closest investigators have come to finding her remains nearly three years after her disappearance. But that wasn't all. Ana's DNA was also identified on a blood-stained hacksaw blade, a hatchet head, the handles of both tools, bloody towels, carpet fragments, and a clump of hair pulled from the same trash bags prosecutors say Brian Walshe used to dispose of his wife's body. The statistical probability? At least 30 nonillion times more likely to be Ana's DNA than an unknown person's. Several items also contained DNA from both Ana and Brian Walshe, including bloodstained slippers and a Tyvek suit. One item — gauze with a red-brown stain — matched Brian alone. Prosecutors had previously shown the jury a photo of a cut on his thumb. New surveillance footage showed Brian Walshe shopping at HomeGoods on January 2nd and 4th, 2023, buying rugs, towels, and bath mats — using store credit from his dead wife's previous returns. Prosecutors suggest he replaced the living room rug after Ana's death, pointing to photos showing a different carpet in the home when police searched it days later. The defense pushed back on cross-examination, arguing DNA testing can't determine when or how biological material was deposited and suggesting items may have cross-contaminated in the trash compactor. But prosecutors countered that cleaning products — including the hydrogen peroxide and ammonia Brian purchased on January 1st — can destroy blood evidence. Wednesday brings testimony from Gem Mutlu, Ana's former boss and the last person besides Brian known to have seen her alive. He Killed it With a HatchetIn 1932 in Short Gap, West Virginia, a grandmother placed her nearly one-year-old daughter (the narrator's mother) on a baby blanket in the yard to get some sunshine while she washed dishes at the kitchen window. The girl's grandfather was chopping wood at the nearby smokehouse when he saw an enormous black bird—described as a “Thunderbird”—casting a huge shadow as it swooped straight down toward the helpless baby. Realizing he couldn't reach her in time, he hurled his hatchet and struck the bird dead. When the family measured the carcass stretched across the smokehouse wall, its wingspan was an astonishing 16 feet 4 inches. Neighbors came from around to view the mysterious giant bird, and a photograph was taken (though it has since been lost). The narrator saw the photo as a child and heard the story many times from his mother, who is now 91.
