That's right, this week we're finally heading into the Dessen-verse. Sarah Dessen is one of Young Adult Literature's best, and in this episode, we are talking about her 1998 novel Someone Like You. This is a coming-of-age classic, with just about every single high school experience packed into something really heartfelt and special. We're about to take you back through the nostalgia of being a teenager with falling in love, heartbreak, and arguing with your mom at a Pizza Hut buffet. This week's episode has it all: best friend talk, the (somehow common) experience of dating boys who refuse to wear socks, and lots of advice on what NOT to do when it comes to dating in your teens and twenties. Plus, we introduce the Crush Scale into To All the YA lore to keep track of the best (and worst) love interests the genre has to offer. We found a highly relatable pairing with Sarah Dessen and Taylor Swift, which we explore in a comparative study on Someone Like You and “I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)” from The Tortured Poets Department. Season 8, The Tortured YA Lit Department, is fueled by angst and some good Taylor Swift song dissection. If you're only here for a discussion of this week's book, Taylor Talk begins 1:08:00 minutes into the episode. The girls live up to the description "Horny English Majors" this week as they challenge themselves to sort all their favorite AEW feuds into romance tropes! Is Roddy Strong a Sarah Dessen romance hero? Is Adam Cole addicted to drama? Are Eddie and Claudio reenacting our favorite Georgette Heyer? Are Kenny and Ibushi operating their romance on an eternal timeline that's hard to even comprehend? All that and some honestly pretty disturbing appreciation of the Jericho/Sammy promo discussed this week on Tunnel Talk!
In this episode Megan and Roxie talk about grief and how it relates to our chakra system. Megan and Roxie share common ground when it comes to grief; they have both lost a parent(s) at a young age. She got the inspiration to explore grief as it relates to the chakras and came up with interview questions based on her research and personal experience. We're talking about our fourth lesson of loving well in this episode: Learning to Listen Deeply. Listening well is a skill and a superpower that makes us better colleagues, friends, and parents. It's also a skill that goes both ways; as you practice listening well, you'll also gain the skill of listening to yourself. As you listen, you'll start to tap into what you really want, need, and connecting with more meaning and purpose in your life. Tune in to learn more about this skill and how you can quickly apply into your own life. Key Takeaways: Listening well is a superpower and a skill that you can get better at. As you listen more to others, you'll listen more to yourself. When we listen well, there is no responsibility to "fix" the situation. We often hide the truth from ourselves. Those who listen well to us can help us uncover these truths. As we listen well to ourselves, we can also uncover these truths. Sarah Dessen quote: “This is the problem with dealing with someone who is actually a good listener. They don't jump in on your sentences, saving you from actually finishing them, or talk over you, allowing what you do manage to get out to be lost or altered in transit. Instead, they wait, so you have to keep going.” Kevin Kelly's "Rule of 3" in conversation: “To get to the real reason, ask a person to go deeper than what they just said. Then again, and once more. The third time's answer is close to the truth…keep asking them Is there more? Until there is no more.” Paulo Coelho quote: “All wisdom was the result of listening to one's own soul.” Dr. Carl Menniger quote: "Listening is a magnetic and strange thing, a creative force. The friends who listen to us are the ones we move toward. When we are listened to, it creates us, makes us unfold and expand.” Links Mentioned: Joy Lab Program Joy Lab Podcast episode #6 (5 Lessons of Loving Well) Joy Lab Podcast episode #21 (Love Yourself First) Joy Lab Podcast episode #22 (See the Innocence in Others) Joy Lab Podcast episode #23 (Be Permeable) Kevin Kelly's website Chemistry of Joy by Henry Emmons, MD Parker Palmer's Center for Courage and Renewal Sarah Dessen's website. Along for the Ride - based on the book by Sarah Dessen, the much loved author of To All The Boys I've Loved Before - follows Emma's character, Auden, who in the summer before college meets the dreamy, yet mysterious Eli (played by the equally dreamy Belmont Cameli). Whilst Auden spends the summer away from her somewhat intense Mum (played by the legendary Andie MacDowell) with her Dad (played by another romcom legend Dermort Mulroney) and Stepmom (Kate Bosworth), in a sleepy seaside town, the two insomniacs bond during night time excursions and Auden ditches books to find a new carefree way of life. It's beyond cute and so is Emma! Today Emma talks about the wild circumstances that led to her jetting off to film Along For The Ride, her first movie role (can you believe?!) and open up about her journey with social anxiety, something that is so rarely spoken about. Plus, she tells me about how journaling has helped her process her mental health, something which I was inspired to take up after this candid chat with Emma, who is a star of the future. We love to support the future queens on this podcast! It was so inspiring to hear Emma talk so openly and honestly about the struggles she has overcome with anxiety, so I hope this helps you in the tougher moments you might face. I also hope you keep on listening and finding the power to Reign in your own lives. If you love this episode, please get in touch (follow me across social media @joshsmithhosts), I love hearing from you. Love, Josh xxx
I'm tired of the grown-up world! Give me whipsmart, funny teens having adventures, falling in love and exploring how to navigate young adulthood — teaching the grown-ups in their lives a few lessons along the way. They're the inspiration I need right now.https://www.confessionsofaclosetromantic.comAlong for the Ride is the most warm-hearted, tender story about one of the biggest milestones in a teen's life. It's based on the best-selling novel by Sarah Dessen and written by screenwriter Sofia Alvarez, who also adapted the YA novel To All the Boys I've Loved Before for the screen.Yeah I'm all grown up but I was thoroughly sucked into the story of Dash and Lily. The clue treasure hunt! The diary entries! Dash's distraction from his lonely Christmas! Lily finding her intellectual equal! The will they or won't they like each other in person! This is my idea of a perfect holiday story.Sex Education has gotten a green light for a fourth season, which is good news because I feel like these students are my friends — despite the fact that they get lucky more than I ever have in my entire life.High school sophomore Devi has a newly awakened libido that she's dying to try out in the hilarious Never Have I Ever. Co-created and co-written by Mindy Kaling, loosely based on her teen years, the series is full of her trademark vulnerable, warm-hearted hilarity. The third season debuts this summer. I've covered Cyrano de Bergerac retellings in previous episodes and The Half of It, from writer-director Alice Wu, is one of the very best. What do you do when you're a teen angry about the gender status quo? If you're the daughter of a former punk activist, you create your own radical feminist zine at your high school. That's Moxie! Directed by and starring Amy Poehler, with a screenplay adapted from the 2015 novel of the same name by Jennifer Mathieu, this show is comedy, a takedown of patriarchy and social commentary in one.Enola Holmes is the teen sister of Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes, and she's inherited the family talent for solving whodunnits. When her eccentric mother goes missing, she enlists her brothers' help in tracking her down. Millie Bobby Brown as Enola is a smart, spirited wonder, and Henry Cavill in 19th century coats and cravats is pure hotness.Support the show
Major spoiler alert: The Truth About Forever is officially Alli's favorite of the Sarah Dessen books she's read so far for the pod. The main character is relatable, the love interest is the swooniest, the emotions are real and nuanced, and all of the summer details are *chef's kiss*. Plus, the book inspires a fantastic conversation on Episode 194 — a conversation that explores perfectionism, toxic relationships, terrible boyfriends, the realities of working in a library, the way our collective approach to grief has shifted in the last 20 years, intense moms, our suggestions for a future adaptation of The Truth About Forever, and Sarah Dessen's masterful craft and world-building.Martha Waters is the author of To Have and To Hoax, To Love and to Loathe, and To Marry and to Meddle. Our secret is out! We're expecting our first child come January 2022 and we are over the moon! At the suggestion of one of our close friends & listeners, we're talking about Parenting this week with two stories that have grown up with us since the 90's. Adam Sandler's 1999 hit Big Daddy shows us a lot about growing up in a short period of time, and Sarah Dessen's 1998 novel Someone Like you teaches us what a new baby will bring, and how to (try) and prepare. We had a lot of fun in this episode, and are candid about our hopes and dreams for our little one to come. Take a listen with us and feel free to shower us in any pro-tips you've come across if you're a parent already! Enjoy

Sometimes having premarital sex has consequences, like getting pregnant or dying in a fiery motorcycle accident the next day. This is what happens to Halley's best friend Scarlett (getting pregnant) and her boyfriend Michael (dying in a fiery motorcycle accident) just weeks before the start of their junior year. While Halley's trying to help Scarlett navigate the weird world of teen motherhood, she starts dating Michael's best friend Macon, a dangerous bad boy with a mysterious past and serious accountability issues. If you've ever wanted to read a Degrassi plot line in novel form, this is the book for you. Mary wants to warn people that there is a Fullmetal Alchemist spoiler in this episode but Renee thinks that series is old enough for spoilers not to matter. Welcome back friends! This week is National Waitstaff Day, so we're honoring these awesome people who make our life easier. Especially with the world the way it is now, the service industry definitely needs our support and business. Our two stories today take place in different parts of the industry, but we can all agree that the folks in the service industry are over worked and underpaid. As former Waitstaff ourselves, we have a different outlook on the struggles these workers face today and this episode hits home for us. Join us this week & help support waitstaff/service industry when you can!
Welcome to the very special tenth episode! Topics include President Biden's climate proposal, Space-X amping up its work flow, Emilia Clarke's newest endeavor, and Sarah Dessen's venture to Netflix!
We're talking about the prolific YA author, Sarah Dessen! Dessen published her first novel in 1996 and as of 2019 has published 14* novels (*in the intro to this episode I mistakenly say 20- apologies!). She's won numerous awards for her work, had two of her novels combined into the film How to Deal, and in 2019 Netflix purchased the rights to adapt 3 of her novels (This Lullaby, Along for the Ride, and Once and for All) into films. // This podcast is produced by Chelsee Bergen. In this episode of Parallel Fiction, Heather and Jeff run down two of Heather's favorite works. To commemorate Heather's big 30th birthday, she took the liberty of picking what Jeff will cover. This episode doubles as Heather's guilty pleasures, as these stories are connected by 1 thing: Heather likes them a lot! Jeff covers the 2002 drama A Walk To Remember staring Mandy Moore and Shane West. Going through the triumphs and heart brakes of characters Landon & Jamie, Jeff gives his opinions on the cringey early 2000's music and some of the best scenes. Did you know? Mandy Moore also appeared in the movie How To Deal, a novel by Heather's writer Sarah Dessen who wrote This Lullaby Heather follows up with her summary of This Lullaby by Sarah Dessen. Another early 2000's romp, This Lullaby follows the adolescence of main character Remy, who is being courted by the hyperactive Dexter, all while managing her responsibility avoiding mother. Heather notes that even though Remy is juggling a lot, she is able to find out the important things in life and come around to people she may have written off. Fun Fact! Sarah Dessen won the Margaret A. Edwards award for Significant and Lasting Contribution to Young Adult Literature in 2017. Following these reviews, Heather and Jeff dive into commonalities between the two works such as personal growth, true love, and building positive relationships. Listen in to hear Jeff and Heather's candid thoughts on the masterpiece scenes of each story, how This Lullaby, Trains, and A Walk To Remember compare, and how Jeff and Heather relate to aspects of each with some interesting facts and opinions about Heather's Favorites/Guilty Pleasures. Share this episode with anyone who you think would enjoy it and let us know what some of your favorite guilty pleasures are! Heather's Rating of This Lullaby: Super Nice – A must-read. A phenomenal story that hits every emotion.Jeff's Rating of Planes, Trains, and Automobiles: Nice – A fun 2000's movie & good date night flick. Sarah Dessen is a YA queen, the beloved author of over a dozen contemporary YA novels exploring themes of loss, first love, assault, family ties, and all the confusing, heartbreaking, thrilling moments when things change forever for her young protagonists. Her new book, The Rest of the Story, centers on a lakefront town divided between the working-class families who live there year round, and the wealthy families who just summer there, and the girl whose fraught family history straddles both. We talked to Dessen about her teen years, her long career, and how the YA landscape has changed since her debut.
