This is a fascinating bonus pod, we're at Flinders Golf Club overlooking the water, the waves, and of course the stunning golf course. And today we're going to learn about the course, it's history, some of the quirks of the course. We start by chatting with Andrew Kirby, who talks us through why he loves Flinders and why the course is so special. He says the views are better than Pebble Beach. There are also deep links between Flinders and Royal Melbourne, which we hear all about.Nick likens the view to the Monterey Peninsula, saying you could almost be there. Nick asks Andrew about the legendary Peter Thomson's history with Flinders, and Andrew explains the origins of that.Mark then brings up the trees. Of course he does. The beautiful Cypress trees. They may be imported, but they're now part of the fabric and they serve a very practical purpose at Flinders, which we hear about.Nick says Flinders has a great collection of Par 3's, and that the 12th hole - called Aunt Sally - is a particularly tough one. The names of the holes are full of character, and Andrew tells us about a plan, years ago, to remove a couple of the holes and the protests that occurred at the time. One of the holes is called the 'Coffin Hole', and we find out how that name came about. After the turn we chat to club captain Phil Hurley about the course renovation and the thoughts behind that, and how important it is to retain the magic of the course. Phil says that it has proven to be extremely hard to break par at Flinders, and that few do. We then chat to Life Member Ray Smith, who appears to have forgiven Nick O'Hern for trying to steal his carpark, Ray has been a member since he was a little tacker and tells about why he loves the course so much. It's a fascinating pod, and a great history lesson of this fantastic course that, as Mark Allen says, helped him, and countless others, fall in love with golf.PING will help you play your best, like they have for Nick O'Hern. Potsdam, New York native, Phil Hurley, talks about growing up on a Canadian border town, joining his older brother's band at 8 which would become The Gigilo Aunts, David Gilmour coming to see them backstage, the Boston scene, Mark Sandman, Seattle scene, Polly Parsons, Jimmy LaFave, The South Austin Moonlighters and more. Recorded at Arlyn Studios and hosted by Karl Anderson.
In the state of contemporary recording, session EPs are a pretty refreshing concept. By limiting yourself to one space and removing any access to punch-ins, session records evoke the “one-take” magic of century-old methods, back when capturing an authentic live performance was the industry standard. Phil Hurley‘s experienced the best of both, having tracked with […]
Our guest this episode is our longtime friend Phil Hurley. Phil spent some time in Seattle where we met before moving a couple times and finally landing in Austin TX for the last 13 years, which is very fitting considering what a talented guitarist and songwriter he is. After years of being a sideman and band guy Phil has started performing his music as The Phil Hurley Band and we should be getting an album of music from him in 2022! We'll be looking forward to this! I hope you enjoy this conversation. Phil is awesome. The entrepreneurial journey is rarely...ok, never...a linear path. Phil Hurley's Slim Chillers (low calorie alcoholic popsicles) took 6 years before their products hit Costco's shelves, became a top selling product, got covered by an influential blogger, and then sales skyrocketed. Throughout 2019, Slim Chillers was always behind the demand and every nickel was going into inventory, machinery and growing the business. They needed money to pour fuel on the fire...in comes Caprice Capital to provide $7M of growth financing. Check out this episode to learn about Phil's journey building Slim Chillers and the process he went through with Caprice. And, yes, Slim Chillers are available during the quarantine.

When you meet Americana singer/songwriter Dave Tucker, it doesn’t take long to see that he’s the salt of the earth. A carpenter by day, Dave is a hard-working man who tells it like it is and who believes whole-heartedly in the bartering system. On December 18, 2012, Dave will independently release his fourth studio album, In Kind, produced by recording artist and multi-platinum songwriter Wendy Waldman in Longhouse II, the studio he built for her. The album features Dave Tucker (acoustic guitar, vocals), Phil Hurley (lead guitar), Tom Fillman (drums/percussion), and Ted Russell Kamp (upright and electric basses), and was engineered by Mike Sawitzke, mixed by Rob Hoffman (Quincy Jones, Christina Aguilera), and mastered by Sangwook “Sunny” Nam at the Mastering Lab. In Kind illustrates Dave’s all-encompassing, explorative nature by guiding the listener through traditional Americana, folk and roots, to pop rock with a little country swagger, then throws curveballs with a reggae beat and singer/songwriter ballad. http://www.davetuckermusic.com/
