Listeners of Couch Riffs that love the show mention:The Couch Riffs podcast, hosted by Mike Squires, is a breath of fresh air in the world of interviews with musicians. Squires does a fantastic job of creating a laid-back and relaxed atmosphere during the interviews, making them feel like casual conversations between friends. What sets this podcast apart is Squires' ability to ask questions that musicians don't often get asked, focusing on building relationships rather than sensationalism. The music aspect of the show is also enjoyable, adding another layer of fun to each episode.
One of the best aspects of Couch Riffs is the unpredictability of each interview. Unlike many other podcasts that follow a scripted and formulaic format, Squire's interview style keeps you on your toes. You never know which direction the conversation will take, making it exciting and engaging to listen to. Additionally, the guests on this podcast are incredibly interesting individuals who provide real insights into the music business. Even if you haven't heard of them before, their stories and personalities make you want to seek out their music.
While there are many positives about Couch Riffs, there are a few minor drawbacks worth mentioning. Sometimes, the show can veer off topic or spend too much time discussing personal anecdotes that may not be directly related to music or the guest's career. This can occasionally make episodes feel long-winded or lose focus. However, these instances are infrequent and do not detract significantly from the overall enjoyment of the podcast.
In conclusion, The Couch Riffs podcast is a must-listen for any music lover looking for in-depth interviews with fascinating musicians. Mike Squires' personable interviewing style creates an intimate atmosphere that feels like eavesdropping on private conversations between friends. Despite its few minor flaws, this podcast stands out from others due to its unique format and great selection of guests. Whether you're a die-hard fan or just someone seeking entertaining content, Couch Riffs delivers with its mix of music, conversation, and captivating stories.
This comeback episode we talk to Corey McCormick, bassist in Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real, Willie Nelson, Chris Cornell and none other than Neil Young. Honestly, Corey has my favorite resume of any guest I've had to date. He's an incredibly talented musician and a top-shelf dude. I caught him on a day off in Seattle where Corey was treated to a brief tour of some Seattle spots and then we sat for the podcast. The next day Corey came to Crackle & Pop where he and a group of us tracked a new live cover for Couch Riffs. Corey was phenomenal as was the entire band. I hope you enjoy this podcast! Catch Corey on tour NOW with Lukas Nelson & Promise Of The Real. And, if you're enjoying Couch Riffs Podcast please support us on Patreon. Our guest this episode is Kristian Dunn, one-half of the instrumental rock band, El Ten Eleven. We cover Kristian's young musical life, his influences, love of sci-fi and writing as well as plenty of El Ten Eleven history. I met Kristian and Tim (El Ten Eleven) on tour last year and got to enjoy their music almost nightly and I can't recommend enough to see them. There is so much music coming off of the stage from two musicians with no pre-recorded loops. Be sure to check them out when they tour next for an upcoming release this Fall and go out and support independent music by buying theirs where ever you like to buy music, downloads or vinyl at the record store! Our guest this episode is Peter Summit, singer/front person for the Las Vegas band Crashing Wayward. Peter walks us through his history as a singer from his earliest days as a karaoke star to touring and single parenting as a working musician. Crashing Wayward release their debut album, Listen, on June 9 2023. The album is chock full of fantastic songs that sound familiar without being derivative and contemporary without losing its appeal to classic rock fans. Look out for this band to explode. I thoroughly enjoyed hosting Peter and I hope you enjoy this, too. Be sure to stream Listen on all major streaming platforms the week this episode comes out! Our guest this episode is a first repeat podcast guest and the musician with the most appearances in Couch Riffs covers videos (I think?), Mr Timo Ellis of Netherlands. In this episode we go pretty deep into what I think most people at least consider and probably worry about but don't really verbalize. Buckle up! I've included some links below to some of the videos Timo brings up in our conversation. We do talk about Netherlands' new album, SEVERANCE, which is arguably their best album yet. Timo is a deeply talented artist and can quite capably express his musical creativity in so many styles and genres, so when you hear the Netherlands it is never a flatlands train track you're traveling on, it is a circuit of wild, well planned trails over a mountain pass. Do go check out Netherlands' music on BandCamp and support independent musicians and artists! Do not expect convention from Timo and Netherlands, however. You can thank me later. My overall point here is that while “men“ are obviously not a static category/ monolith, I still regard the phenomenon of sexist domination not only as unequivocally still a “thing“…+ but actually of the foundational cultural malignancies afflicting humanity (and all of non-human life as well, etc) and which IMO, needs to be rooted out, and called out, as vigorously…and as soon as possible!”
Our guest this episode is Dirk Serries, a fantastic human and musician who has been creating since the 80s with Vidna Obmana, Fear Falls Burning and most recently his 2nd collaboration with Justin K. Broadrick, Loud As Giants, which released an album, Empty Homes, on April 28 2023. Dirk was an awesome hang and we get into his earliest music creation, his discovery of synths, samplers, and much later guitars, and real talk about being a full-time artist/musician with a full-time work life to balance. Be sure to check out the album at the link below and if you're in Belgium catch Loud As Giants at Dunk Festival in Ghent on May 18, 2023. I hope you enjoy this episode! Our guest this episode is Marc Emer-Hutner, guitarist/singer of the band Sugartooth and guitarist for The Pleasure Club. Sugartooth hit the road hard to tour in support of their 2 major label releases in the 90s before going on hiatus. Soon after Marc was playing guitar in The Pleasure Club, a band that is highly celebrated by other bands and musicians but never reached the grand audience that they were worthy of. Marc and Sugartooth have regathered and recorded a new album, Vol. 3, which released April 21, 2023 and is full of groove-heavy rock with catchy melodies. Recommended if you like QOTSA, Clutch, Fu Manchu, etc. I had a great time hanging with Marc and getting some of his life story and I hope you enjoy. Please do go check out his body of work from over the years and absolutely listen to Vol. 3! If you're enjoying Couch Riffs Podcast please support us on Patreon. Jason has been around Seattle through the thick and thin of it and has made his way through many punk bands in town but Zeke is the king of them. In this conversation we talk about his rural upbringing and Eastern Washington youth all the way up to Zeke's new single, Ride Hard Ride Free. Zeke will be playing Punk Rock Bowling this year with a few SoCal shows tagged on the end of a long weekend run. This episode we are very pleased to host Todd La Torre, vocalist of Queensrÿche AND lesser known as the killer drummer that he is! In fact, Todd tracked drums on the 2019 Queensrÿche album, The Verdict in the absence the band's original drummer, Scott Rockenfield. Couch Riffs was lucky enough to get him to lend his incredible voice to an upcoming cover song, too. Stay tuned! Todd joined Queensrÿche in 2012 and has been steadily showing the world that the band can be better than ever at this point in their career. Our guest this episode is Whitfield Crane, singer for Ugly Kid Joe who has recently released a new full-length album titled Rad Wings of Destiny. I met Ugly Kid Joe (and Whit) on tour 10 years ago and became fast friends with all of the members of the band. This friendship eventually led to me doing some touring with the band over the summer of 2022 and I will continue performing with them for some UK dates in November 2022. Rad Wings of Destiny is a well-rounded rock album with strong riffs, clever lyrics and great hooks! I recommend checking it out and do catch the band live if you're able. Our guest this episode is the incredibly talented, multi-instrumentalist Robbie Crowell. Its crazy to think that nearly every musician is known for being proficient and one prominent instrument but Robbie is hired regularly on 4 instruments: drums, bass, keys and sax. His list of recording credits is equally as impressive and wildly varied. And, to help things along, he's an ace dude and a killer hang. I hope you enjoy this conversation as we dive into Robbie's musical history and get a glimpse into his world. Thanks for listening! He's been gigging since he was a young kid, first in orchestral organizations and then at 16 in a rock band with folks much older than he was. He later moved to LA and has gone on to play with a number of notable bands. Thanks for listening! Richard had a very busy and successful career as a studio musician in NYC before landing the Gn'R job in 2002. Richard is one of the most astounding guitarists you'll find anywhere and is a Swiss Army Knife of styles and techniques. It was an absolute pleasure to host him here and to have this conversation and I hope you enjoy! Borts has a new release out! A collaborative EP with friend of Couch Riffs Timo Ellis (Netherlands/Hug Victim) and video content to drive it home. Please do go check this out. Our guest this episode is our longtime friend Phil Hurley. Phil spent some time in Seattle where we met before moving a couple times and finally landing in Austin TX for the last 13 years, which is very fitting considering what a talented guitarist and songwriter he is. After years of being a sideman and band guy Phil has started performing his music as The Phil Hurley Band and we should be getting an album of music from him in 2022! We'll be looking forward to this! I hope you enjoy this conversation. Phil is awesome.
