Sales Gravy: Jeb Blount
Stop Mistaking Sales Activity Motion For Pipeline Momentum

Sales Gravy: Jeb Blount

Sales activity is the lifeblood of your career. But for too many salespeople, it's the very thing holding them back. You're generating a ton of activity, your calendar is packed, your inbox is overflowing, and by the end of the day, you're drained.  But your numbers aren't moving. You're not gaining ground; you're just driving in circles. As Ron Karr, author of Velocity Mindset, says, the difference between amateurs and top performers isn't how fast they move, but whether they're moving with a clear, defined direction. The problem isn't laziness. It's that you're mistaking motion for momentum. And that's why you feel stuck. The Problem: Sales Activity Without Purpose Most salespeople today are trapped in a cycle of sales activity that leads nowhere. Instead of pursuing long-term, meaningful outcomes, they chase short-term wins: a quick meeting booked, a proposal sent, a Request for Proposal (RFP) answered. But those wins don't move the needle. They pull you onto a field controlled by competitors. You're responding to bids, filling out forms, and competing on price. That's not selling—it's order-taking. And order-taking will keep you broke no matter how much activity you pile on. The Real Cost of “Busyness” Busyness isn't just about wasted time. It's about emotional avoidance. The reason you bury yourself in low-value sales activity is that it feels safe. These tasks create the illusion of productivity while shielding you from what you're really afraid of: rejection. Instead of calling the prospect who's gone cold, you refresh your CRM. Rather then reaching out to the big account you've been circling, you tidy your inbox. Instead of pushing into a tough conversation, you polish the proposal one more time. You're not lazy. You're working hard. But effort without purpose is like a car spinning its wheels in the mud. Lots of noise, lots of energy, but no forward motion.  The Solution: High-Leverage Sales Activity Not all sales activity is created equal. Some actions produce a 10x return. Others are pure waste. Top performers know the difference—and ruthlessly prioritize the former. Here are three high-leverage sales activities that separate pros from amateurs: Proactive Prospecting Your sales pipeline is the fuel tank for your career. If it's empty, you're not going anywhere. Prospecting isn't a side task you do when you have extra time. It is the job. That means making outbound calls, sending personalized emails, and using LinkedIn to connect with people who aren't already in your orbit. Stop waiting for the phone to ring. Go make it ring. Meaningful Conversations Once you get a prospect's attention, the goal isn't to rattle off product features. It's to have a value-driven conversation. That means asking discovery questions that uncover their goals, their pain points, and their motivations. It means showing up as an expert and positioning yourself as a trusted advisor, not another vendor. When you consistently create conversations that center around the customer's needs, you become indispensable. Prospects should feel like they'd be foolish not to work with you. The Power of “No” Not every opportunity deserves your time. Amateurs say yes to every opportunity and demo request. Top performers say no. Qualify hard; disqualify fast. The hours you spend chasing a dead deal are hours you could invest in finding a stronger one. Being busy with the wrong opportunities makes you broke. Saying no to the wrong leads frees you up to say yes to the right ones. Your Action Plan To Go From “Just Busy” To Productive Breaking the cycle of wasted sales activity requires intention and discipline. Here's how to start: Step 1: The Activity Audit For one week, track everything you do—calls, emails, meetings, busywork. At the end of the week, review your log and ask: Which of these activities directly moved a deal forward or created new pipeline? Most of what you thought was productive won't make the cu...

After years leading teams at Segment, Retool and Common Room, he walked away from politics and board decks to create a “super IC” role focused on experiments, product evangelism, and hands‑on growth. He applies that same mindset to go‑to‑market: strip out the bloat, ditch templated outreach, and use real buyer behavior to build small, personal campaigns. He treats AI as an amplifier for skilled marketers, using it to speed research and sharpen ideas, while relying on human judgment to make the output work. Even visibility, once draining for him, became a muscle he trained through repetition. Kevin's story is a guide for marketers who want less political fluff, more impact, and roles built around the work they actually love to do.About KevinKevin White is a seasoned go-to-market leader with over 20 years of experience driving growth for high-growth SaaS companies. He's held senior roles at Gigya, SingleStore, HackerOne, and Twilio Segment, where he built demand generation engines and scaled marketing operations during critical growth stages. Most recently, Kevin led marketing at Retool and advanced through multiple leadership roles at Common Room, from Head of Demand Generation to Head of Marketing, and now Head of GTM Strategy. He has also advised innovative startups like Ashby, Gretel.ai, and Deepnote, helping them refine their go-to-market strategies and accelerate adoption. How to Design a Super IC Role for Senior MarketersClimbing the marketing ladder feels like progress until you realize the work at the top is entirely different. Kevin spent years running teams at Retool and Common Room. He managed a dozen people, dealt with SDR team politics, prepared board updates, and handled internal marketing. Those tasks ate up his time and dulled his energy for the work that made him great in the first place. “My day-to-day was full of things I didn't enjoy. One-on-ones, internal marketing, SDR team drama, board updates. None of it felt like what I wanted to be doing,” he said.Kevin thrived in the early-stage chaos. He loved being the first marketer, building programs from scratch, experimenting with growth channels, and connecting directly with customers. Those environments let him create instead of coordinate. He could see the direct impact of his work and feel close to the product. As companies grew, that hands-on work disappeared. He became a coach, a manager, and a political operator. For someone who values doing over directing, that was a poor fit.He worked with Common Room's CEO to design a role that put him back in his zone. Now, as Head of GTM Strategy, Kevin functions as a “super IC.” He runs high-leverage growth experiments, drives product evangelism, and collaborates with a few freelancers instead of managing a team. That way he can focus on the work that delivers impact while avoiding the politics and administrative load that drained him. It is a custom role built around his strengths, and it brought back his enthusiasm for the job.Kevin's thinking extends beyond his role. He shared how Common Room rethought sales development. They hired an excellent manager who knows how to attract and retain elite talent. Then they paid those top performers well above the market rate. “Harry is one of our SDRs,” Kevin explained. “We pay him a good amount because he produces outsized results. That playbook works.” In Kevin's view, companies should build alternative tracks for individual contributors and reward them based on their production, not their willingness to manage people.Key takeaway: Create roles that match strengths instead of forcing people up a management ladder. Build paths for senior individual contributors who can deliver massive value without leading teams. Pay top performers according to their impact, not their title. If you manage teams, audit which roles could benefit from this model and where high-performers need more autonomy. If you are an individual contributor, consider what a custom role would look like that keeps you close to the work you do best.Building Confidence With Public Visibility as an Introverted LeaderPublic visibility exhausts many introverted leaders. Kevin describes finishing a full day at a conference feeling drained, running only on caffeine to get through the next one. Sharing his voice on LinkedIn or recording videos once felt unbearable. Even now, he admits to taking multiple tries before posting anything. Despite that discomfort, he continues to do it because the repetition has transformed the work from a chore into a habit.“I was mortified at myself when I first started recording things,” Kevin said. “But I kept hearing people say how helpful it was, and that positive reinforcement made it easier.”Kevin builds on small steps instead of waiting for confidence to appear. He creates a cycle where he pushes himself into uncomfortable situations, collects positive feedback, and uses that reinforcement to do it again. Over time, the acts that once caused him anxiety, like posting thought pieces or speaking publicly, have become regular parts of his work.He views visibility as a skill that can be practiced. Instead of thinking in terms of strengths or weaknesses, he treats every new action as training. This perspective removes the pressure to “perform” and reframes the process as building a muscle. That makes posting online, speaking at events, and showing up in public spaces a set of learnable behaviors rather than personal traits. You can use his approach:Start with small, low-stakes actions like sharing short ideas on LinkedIn.Progress to more challenging mediums such as podcasts or short recorded demos.Save positive responses to use as reminders when your motivation dips.Treat every effort as practice, which builds resilience and lowers fear over time.Key takeaway: Confidence grows through repetition. Build it by starting with small visibility actions, collecting reinforcement, and gradually increasing the difficulty of your public presence. That way you can turn something that drains you into a manageable, even natural, part of your role.Using Empathy and Demos to Build Authentic GTM StrategiesKevin remembers the grind of stitching together spreadsheets, Zaps, and Salesforce automat...

Using Amateur Bands for other purposes

Foundations of Amateur Radio Recently I came across a series of strident posts about the injustice associated with a non-amateur service using the 70cm band. Complete with links to discussions, spectrum plots, angst and even incoherent outrage, all related to the notion that whomever "allowed" this user to transmit on this band was clearly incompetent. Except, that this is probably not the case, or the full story. So, what's going on and why are people incensed? This all started at least six years ago. Since then AST SpaceMobile has deployed seven low Earth orbit satellites and used the 70cm band to communicate with them. Although in the trial phase, there's plans for an additional 243 satellites, and there's at least one other company playing in the same space, Atmos Space Cargo. The outcry from amateurs is around the commercial use of "their" 70cm amateur band. It's an emotional statement, but what is the reality? Before I dig in, let's set some terms. Radio frequencies are globally coordinated because electromagnetism doesn't care about sovereign borders. This coordination is conducted at the United Nations by a body called the ITU, the International Telecommunications Union. Within that body, amateur radio gets a seat at the table from an organisation called the IARU, the International Amateur Radio Union. For the purposes of the ITU, the world is divided into three, Region 1, or essentially Europe, Russia and Africa, Region 2, the Americas and Greenland, and Region 3, the rest of the world. There's more to it, for example, Antarctica is split across all three, but for the moment, that really doesn't matter. Of interest is that the band plan, the agreements that outline which frequencies are set aside for what service, might be defined differently across each of those three regions. To add complexity, each country can be granted exceptions. I don't know the exact mechanics of how this is achieved, but I can guarantee that there's lots of haggling and foot stomping, diplomatically of course. If you're curious how I come to that observation, just look at the absurd list of exceptions associated with each band plan allocation. Further complexity is added by the fact that not all allocations occupy the same frequency range. For example, in Region 1, the 2m band for Amateurs exists between 144 and 146 MHz, in Region 2 and 3 it's between 144 and 148 MHz. Within an allocation there is the concept of shared and exclusive priorities. These determine who "wins" if two stations with a different service are transmitting on the same frequency. Essentially, a secondary user may not interfere with a primary user and a tertiary user may not interfere with either a secondary or a primary user and so on. A primary user can pretty much do what they want, as long as they stay within the allocation and don't interfere with other primary users. As a result, the order in which services are listed, matters. An exclusive allocation doesn't have to be shared at all. Between regions these service priorities might not be the same. For example, in Region 1 between 430 and 432 MHz is allocated to Amateurs and Radio Location, but in Region 2 and 3 it's between Radio Location and Amateurs. So an amateur using that frequency whilst in Region 1 would be a primary user, but in Region 2 or 3 they wouldn't. As an added wrinkle, for example in Australia, that slice is "primarily for the purposes of defence and national security", even though Radio Location is the primary service and Amateurs the secondary one. As a bonus, amateurs in Australia have access to 420.8 to 421.2 MHz as a secondary service, even though the ITU designates this as Fixed, then Mobile, except Aeronautical Mobile, and then Radio Location. Although amateurs are a secondary service, they come after the Department of Defence who are the primary users for those frequencies in Australia. Between 420 and 430 MHz, and from 440 to 450 MHz in several countries, Australia included, the Amateur Service is explicitly designated as a secondary service even though the band plan doesn't actually show this. If you're confused, you're in good company, since this tapestry of regulation isn't as straightforward as the "70cm band is an amateur band", in fact, I'd go so far as to say that it's not an amateur band at all, except perhaps in Region 1 between 430 and 440 MHz where Amateur is designated as the non-exclusive primary service. Back to the blow up. AST was at one time authorised to use 430 to 440 MHz for trial purposes by a regulator in Region 2, the FCC, the United States Federal Communications Commission. I suspect that at the time, the Blue Walker 1 nano satellite was experimental and the approval made sense. You can argue that whomever initially allowed this made a mistake, but, reality is whatever the regulator says it is, unless someone at the ITU objects. It appears that the FCC has since been attempting to make AST comply, instead with billions of dollars at stake, AST continues to apply for more spectrum, which they apparently originally filed with the ITU through the Papua New Guinea administration. It's unclear if the FCC has since capitulated. There is evidence that the new commercial AST satellites are transmitting outside of their authorisation, euphemistically described as "IARU Uncoordinated". Ask yourself, how is it possible, or even allowable, that a regulator permits use of radio spectrum outside its borders and what penalties and remedies exist? The ground stations using these disputed frequencies are all outside the USA. One of the five ground stations is in my own city, Perth in Western Australia. I haven't noticed any discussion on this topic within my local community, even though this has been brewing for years. It does raise a bigger question. How is the band plan enforced? I mean, the 40m band is pretty much unusable in VK6 between sunset and midnight thanks to the fishing fleet of our northern neighbours, it's been like that for as long as I've been an amateur and I expect no change during my lifetime. How is this satellite fleet operating on the 70cm band any different? That said, I cannot help but wonder, will the originally authorised 50 kHz signal every eight seconds, not for phone calls to space, and only for 24 hours after launch or in the unlikely event of an emergency, for Telemetry, Tracking and Command, actually cause issues, or will it be an opportunity for radio amateurs to learn how to deal with interference? Speaking of interference and considering the allocated services, who is interfering with whom here and what priorities and remedies exist? Recently I talked about promotion, and the lack thereof, across our community. This is an example of promotion, and despite the uproar this week, a very poor example at that. Searching for "AST SpaceMobile", the oldest post I could find was on the German AMSAT, or Amateur Satellite forums back in September 2022 by Peter DB2OS who has been very active on this matter. His original post was in English, but went on to discuss the issue in German. I only found it after specifically looking for the names of the organisation involved. Peter's posts supplied links to many of the documents I consulted. Despite having links to specific pages, I found no search results for "AST SpaceMobile" on the websites for the regulators in the US, UK, Germany or Australia, and none on the ARRL, RSGB or DARC. The WIA produced two glowing news reports around the beginning of 2023 about this wonderful new mobile phone service. No mention of the 70cm band. The only active discussions appear to be the German and UK AMSAT forums, that and all the glowing investor posts. In other words. This is the equivalent of publishing the information at your local planning department in Alpha Centauri, 50 years before the event and hoping for a good outcome. As a potential path forward, in January 2023 the German regulator forced AST to shut off 70cm operations whilst it was within radio visibility of Germany. I don't know if that's still in effect, or how and if it's being enforced. It appears that AST has been lobbying for the use of this spectrum for a long time, not just the 340 page submission made last month. For example, NASA made its first response to this satellite constellation in October 2020. It appears that the WIA responded four years later, but I have yet to see it, and this week the Bulgarian Federation of Radio Amateurs, the ARRL, and RSGB added theirs. The IARU issued a statement this week too. The fact that we're still arguing about it over half a decade later is a good indication that how we're responding as a global community is clearly ineffectual. Perhaps that is what we should be arguing stridently about. So, where do you stand on this? Should something be done about this, and if-so, what, and more importantly, how? I'm Onno VK6FLAB

Part 1 It's Not Summer Without You by Jenny Han Summary"It's Not Summer Without You" is the second book in Jenny Han's "Summer" series, which follows the life of Isabel “Belly” Conklin as she navigates her complicated feelings for her longtime crush, Jeremiah Fisher, and his brother, Conrad. The story picks up after the events of the first book. Belly has spent a summer in the past at the beach house belonging to the Fishers, but this time it's different. The summer is overshadowed by the sudden passing of Belly's mother, as well as the deepening emotional turmoil between Belly, Jeremiah, and Conrad. At the beginning of the book, Belly feels lost without her mother and struggles with her grief. She has been harboring feelings for Conrad, who has pushed her away, leaving her heartbroken. As the narrative progresses, we see Belly trying to deal with her conflicted emotions and her relationships with both brothers. Jeremiah, who represents friendship and comfort, tends to be more openly affectionate and supportive, while Conrad embodies a more complicated, brooding persona that causes Belly more pain due to his emotional distance. The setting of the beach house serves as a backdrop for Belly's journey of self-discovery and healing. The annual summer traditions are disrupted by the struggles the characters face, but they also provide moments of nostalgia and bittersweet memories as Belly reflects on her childhood and her relationships. As the story unfolds, Belly learns important lessons about love, loss, and the importance of moving forward in life. The book examines themes of family, friendship, and growing up, while Belly ultimately has to choose between the safety and friendship that Jeremiah offers and the intense but complicated love she shares with Conrad. Overall, "It's Not Summer Without You" is a heartfelt exploration of the challenges that accompany growing up, the pain of loss, and the complexity of teenage romance, setting the stage for the concluding book in the series.Part 2 It's Not Summer Without You AuthorJenny Han is an American author and the co-author of the popular young adult series "To All the Boys I've Loved Before." In this episode of Building Better Developers with AI, Rob Broadhead and Michael Meloche take a deep dive into one of the most uncomfortable—but—essential parts of being a developer: developer feedback. Using AI tools like ChatGPT, they revisit their past topics and uncover new insights on how feedback, communication, and mindset shape stronger, more collaborative developers. AI's Perspective: Developer Feedback as a Growth Tool Rob kicks off the episode by sharing how they asked ChatGPT to structure a show around developer feedback. The AI delivered a simple but powerful reminder: Feedback isn't criticism. It's a tool for growth. Key Takeaway: “Professionals seek feedback. Amateurs avoid it.” By reframing feedback as data rather than a personal critique, developers can use it to refine their skills, just as they would when debugging their code. Rob emphasizes that real-time, in-person code reviews often reveal more than written comments. They provide opportunities for knowledge sharing, cross-training, and discovering undocumented project details. Creating a Safe Space for Developer Feedback Michael reminds listeners that developer feedback works best in a safe and collaborative environment. Taking a breath before reacting allows you to absorb feedback objectively. Pro Tip: Treat feedback as input to improve — not a personal attack. However, Michael cautions against over-relying on constant feedback. While it's essential for growth, too much can erode confidence. Effective developers seek feedback purposefully and filter out noise. Code Reviews: The Most Overlooked Feedback Tool Both hosts stress the value of regular code reviews as an essential form of developer feedback: They catch errors early Enforce coding standards Reduce duplication and dead code Provide cross-training for the team Michael's Advice: “If your code changes are too big to review efficiently, your process needs adjusting.” Regular, focused code reviews keep teams aligned, enhance code quality, and enable developers to learn from one another. Beyond Code: Communicating with Non-Developers Rob reminds us that actual growth comes not just from technical feedback but from communicating effectively with non-developers. Whether it's labeling input fields clearly or translating technical issues for business stakeholders, every interaction shapes project success. Developer Feedback in Action: Understanding your users' language makes your product better — and prevents avoidable frustration. How to Process Developer Feedback Without Ego The hardest part of handling developer feedback? Managing your emotions. Rob and Michael outline how to stay grounded: Don't react — review, digest, reflect Ask clarifying questions without defensiveness Look for patterns across multiple feedback sources By approaching feedback with curiosity rather than ego, developers grow faster and foster stronger teams. Final Thoughts: Winning Through Listening Rob closes with timeless advice: “The person who talks the least in a meeting often wins.” Listening more — to peers, customers, and users — leads to better feedback, fewer misunderstandings, and stronger products. Developer Feedback may be uncomfortable, but it remains one of the fastest, most effective ways to grow as a developer. Combined with AI tools, code reviews, and intentional communication, feedback turns everyday frustrations into long-term success. The Joint Readiness Training Center is pleased to present the one-hundredth-and-fifth episode to air on ‘The Crucible - The JRTC Experience.' Hosted by COL Ricky Taylor, the Commander of Ops Group (COG). Today's guests are four seasoned infantry task force seniors. LTC Andy Smith is the TF Senior for Task Force 2 (IN BN) with ten rotations as an Observer – Coach – Trainer and six rotations as a rotational training unit. LTC Matt Bandi is the TF Senior for Task Force 3 (IN BN) with nine rotations as an OCT and four rotations as RTU. LTC(P) Timothy Price is the TF Senior for Brigade Command & Control (BDE HQ) with twenty-one rotations as an OCT and seven rotations as RTU. And LTC Chuck Wall is the TF Senior for Task Force 1 (IN BN) with nine rotations as an OCT and five rotations as RTU. This episode of The Crucible centers on the raw, uncompromising realities of infantry warfighting in the LSCO environment, drawing directly from firsthand observations at JRTC. The discussion highlights how success on the modern battlefield is built on a foundation of small-unit fundamentals—movement, marksmanship, reporting, and rehearsals. Leaders emphasize that doctrinal clarity and simplicity at the squad and platoon level remain decisive, especially under pressure from drone surveillance, EW interference, and contested logistics. Units that survive and win are those that maintain discipline in their fieldcraft: they camouflage well, rehearse everything, and operate with a combat mindset that anticipates disruption rather than being surprised by it.   The conversation also underscores the importance of deliberate leadership placement, effective use of terrain, and clarity in commander's intent. Fieldcraft isn't just about staying hidden—it's about moving smart, planning for degraded comms, and sustaining yourself under fire. Leaders describe how critical it is for junior NCOs and officers to own their piece of the battlefield, from shaping local security zones to enforcing LOGSTAT discipline. The episode drives home that modernization won't compensate for a lack of tactical proficiency—and that high-tech tools like sUAS, ATAK, or digital fires architecture only matter if teams have mastered the analog skills to shoot, maneuver, communicate, and survive under stress.   Remember, Professionals train for the fight—they rehearse under pressure, refine fundamentals, and prepare for the worst-case scenario. Amateurs train until they get it right; professionals train until they can't get it wrong. In LSCO, that difference means survival.   Part of S03 “Lightfighter Lessons” series.   For additional information and insights from this episode, please check-out our Instagram page @the_jrtc_crucible_podcast.   Be sure to follow us on social media to keep up with the latest warfighting TTPs learned through the crucible that is the Joint Readiness Training Center.   Follow us by going to: https://linktr.ee/jrtc and then selecting your preferred podcast format.   Again, we'd like to thank our guests for participating.

Jason founded Train 2.0 in February 2017, an incredible hockey teaching platform that I have arguably benefitted from.Growing up in a small town in British Columbia, Canada, Jason was determined to make it to the NHL. When he wasn't scouted at the age of 18, frustration turned into determination, and then into an obsession with finding a better way to learn and develop as a hockey player. That obsession led Jason to study kinesiology at the University of British Columbia, where he graduated near the top of his class for his thesis on player selections and the process of making a hockey team. He later put his training and research to the test by playing professional hockey in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL).Jason is also the founder of his newest project, Arrow Supplements, who produce a Magnesium Bisglycinate supplement, which is the most absorbable, most researched, and most recommended magnesium. Arrow Supplement's mission is to cut through the noise of the supplement industry with honesty and simplicity.Find Jason at-https://train2point0.com/https://www.arrowsupplements.com/https://www.grantme.ca/Find Boundless Body at- myboundlessbody.com Book a session with us here!

Andy and Brendan are in high spirits for this "Victory Wednesday" recording focused on the Canadian Open. The two discuss the results from "Golf's Longest Day" of U.S. Open qualifying. Amateurs lit some sites up, Cam Young advanced in a playoff, and Zac Blair found his way in at Springfield yet again. There's some LinkedIn chatter after "dental coach" Matt Vogt advanced to Oakmont from the Walla Walla, Washington site. Andy and Brendan ponder whether big-name players that failed to qualify at east-coast events should have flown out to the west coast to play different competition. The two then move to the RBC Canadian Open, where Luke Clanton will debut as a pro and Rory McIlroy re-emerged after his interesting week at Quail Hollow. Andy and Brendan discuss Rory's pre-tournament press conference and his comments about his driver failing testing at the PGA and the ensuing decision to not speak with the media after any tournament round. PJ pops in to preview the American Family Insurance Championship, a Champs Tour team event, before Brendan gives his "Event of the Week" to this week's DP World Tour stop in Amsterdam.
