In this episode, Eugene gets an overdue lesson in Asian American studies in a conversation with Franklin Odo, an activist, historian, and professor at Amherst College. Professor Odo provides an overview of legal landmarks in United States immigration history as well as insights to his personal position as a Japanese American in academia during the civil rights movement. Together, they explore whether or not the United States government upholds family values and consider parallels between the ideological shifts of the 1960s and our present reckoning with race in light of the Black Lives Matter movement. Professor Richard Franklin, Co-Director of the World Safety Organisation Collaborating Centre for Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion, James Cook University, Australia, has a positive view of the future of our cities, which will rely much more on active and safe transportation. He tells Editor-in-Chief of Injury Prevention Rod McClure about the evidence-based and public health approaches of his work, especially in rural populations. The following lecture was introduced by the Vice Chancellor, Leszek Borysiewicz, and the Head of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Professor Martin Daunton. It was delivered in the Arts Lecture Theatre on the New Museums Site at 5pm on Wednesday October 30th 2013.
