The Hon. Gilman Louie has had quite the career in national security, one that – despite his family's background of service – he wasn't exactly planning on. Now the co-founder and managing partner of America's Frontier Fund, a phone call early in his career set him on a path that would lead to a 30+ year career “in the business” as they say. Louie's focus on investing in future U.S. national security from the private sector side is a fascinating story. And his views on the technology race with China are both informed and concerning. He is one of the few people with a Silicon Valley mindset, who understands the inner workings of Washington D.C. So why is he so worried about America's ability to protect itself?

Nearly one third of all jobs are poised to be fundamentally transformed by generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), according to a new study by global strategic consultancy Sia Partners. The study reveals that more than 80% of tasks in these roles are primed for automation, driven by the rapid expansion of Large Language Models (LLMs) and GenAI technologies, signalling a major shift in how work will be performed. The study, titled AI OrgReview: Assessment of the Potential Impact of Generative AI on the Workforce, analysed a range of jobs across sectors like hospitality, healthcare, engineering, manufacturing, legal, education, finance and the creative industries. It found that roles particularly in tax, web administration, IT and digital design are highly exposed to the impact of GenAI. The study highlights the potential of GenAI to both enhance productivity and transform job roles across various sectors, while at the same time reshaping the workforce and our understanding of work itself. Varied Impact The study utilised Sia Partners newly developed AI OrgReview tool to analyse 50 occupations, scanning 1,000 work-related tasks or activities. The model's accuracy was validated by the company's GenAI experts and found to be over 90% accurate. The findings revealed widespread impacts of GenAI across all the reviewed occupations, with 41% to 46% of work tasks being susceptible to GenAI influence. However, the level of impact varied: while 80% of roles were affected to some extent, 28% are expected to experience more significant disruption. Lawrence Vesey, Partner for Ireland & UK at Sia Partners said: "The findings point to the remarkable opportunities AI can offer in terms of productivity enhanced efficiency. As pioneers in this space, Sia Partners is at the forefront of helping organisations integrate these technologies in a way that prioritises people and strategy. "We're committed to delivering innovative solutions that will guide leaders through this technological evolution with optimism and clarity. This will support organisations to manage change arising, and take care of wider stakeholder concerns in a fair and ethical way." Co-author of the study, Christian Howieson, Engagement Manager for Ireland and the UK at Sia Partners, said: "The study highlights the significant efficiency improvements and edge that early adopters of GenAI can attain. However, organisational planning and design methods need to evolve to ensure these technologies are implemented thoughtfully, with a necessary focus on people." Andrei Pascanean, co-author of the study and Senior Consultant Data Science at Sia Partners, said: "The key insights of this study highlight the transformative potential of GenAI, demonstrating the benefits it offers and the challenges it poses, while emphasising the need for strategic planning and thoughtful implementation." AI OrgReview, developed by Sia Partners, enables organisations to quickly assess the potential impact of GenAI technologies, such as LLMs and Generative Pre-trained Transformers (GPTs), on their workforce. It combines a model built within SiaGPT's technology suite with a consulting framework that helps organisations navigate the complexities of GenAI integration using their own data. Donald Shoup — economist, author, and distinguished research professor at UCLA — is in good traffic this week re-emphasizing the economic implications of free parking and its hidden costs, advocating for reforms such as market-based pricing for curb parking and parking benefit districts. He delves into the nuances between doctrine and dogma, sharing his perspective from a summary of lifelong research and practice in cities nationwide. The conversation explores various cities (including good traffic's home base in Columbus, Ohio) that are implementing these changes, promoting the idea that paid parking and strategically managed space can improve urban environments dramatically. How complex are the dynamics of employer-based insurance? Is the time ripe for a radical transformation towards universal basic healthcare—a move that could potentially curb the spiraling expenses and offer stable access to care?Amy Finkelstein is the John & Jennie S. MacDonald Professor of Economics at MIT and the author and co-author of several books including We've Got You Covered: Rebooting American Health Care andRisky Business: Why Insurance Markets Fail and What to Do About It.Greg and Amy discuss the truth behind America's healthcare conundrum. Amy peels back the layers of the nation's healthcare system, exposing the patchwork structure that's left millions without stable insurance and grappling with soaring costs. Amy lays out the progression of medical practices and the government's shifting role in health insurance. Greg asks about the effects of cost-sharing in systems with universal coverage, and they weigh the pros and cons of mandates versus automatic health insurance provision*unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Episode Quotes:Why did insurance get so highly insecure and highly uncertain?05:59: Almost everyone who's privately insured, which is about half the population as you said, is getting their insurance through their employer. And that actually can create a fair amount of this uncertainty, this insurance turnover. If you lose your job, change your job, retire, become ill (and therefore lose your job), you can lose your health insurance. And that's not a particularly sensible way to design a health insurance system. The very purpose of health insurance is to provide some modicum of economic and financial security in an insecure and uncertain world. So it's quite perverse from our perspective that health insurance is itself highly insecure and highly uncertain. And you asked, why did it get that way? I think because, there was never a "let's start with a clean slate and figure out how to build a coherent system" moment. The true purpose of universal health coverage48:15: We're arguing that we wouldn't have to raise taxes to provide universal basic coverage that fulfills sort of our commitment to access to essential medical care, regardless of resources. But we're not arguing, nor do I think it would be true, that this is actually going to save money. But again, this notion: when people advocate, we're going to do something to save money. So often, that's both a bit of a stretch, but it's also, I think, a bit of a distraction in the sense that the purpose of most policies is not to save money. It's to accomplish an objective, and we pay for that objective. We don't say we're having national defense to save money. We're having it to be secure. Similarly, the purpose of health insurance is not to save money; it's always nice if you do, but it's to ensure access to essential medical care, regardless of resources. Why do people find it hard to invest in preventive care?52:02: In general, there's a sense that it's hard to get people to take their statins to lower their cholesterol after a heart attack, even if those statins are free – so it's not about financing. And why? One of the theories is, well, you've got a lot going on in your life, and when you don't take the statin, there's no immediate feedback loop. You don't immediately have a heart attack. And so you don't see the benefit, and that makes it harder to remember…[52:48] Part of the reason it's hard to get people to invest in preventive care is because the returns are not so salient or obvious. You have to believe the evidence and remember it all the time, as opposed to seeing with your own eyes what's happening when you change your behavior. What does health insurance really mean?08:53: The term health insurance is a bit of a misnomer. Health insurance doesn't actually insure your health. It's not providing the fountain of youth. Instead, it provides economic or financial protection against the medical costs of poor health.Show Links:Recommended Resources:Gross Domestic ProductAn Act for the relief of sick and disabled seamenFriedrich HayekMassachusetts Health Care ReformCharles MurrayAlexander HamiltonAffordable Care ActGuest Profile:Faculty Profile at MITProfile on WikipediaProfile on NBERHer Work:Amazon Author PageWe've Got You Covered: Rebooting American Health CareRisky Business: Why Insurance Markets Fail and What to Do About ItBusiness With a Woman's Touch: The How-To Guide to Successful Entrepreneurship & Profiting In Business Without Sacrificing IntegrityMoral Hazard in Health InsuranceGoogle Scholar PageMIT Economics Publications List

Earlier this week, I finally found time to work on a large code change. When I deployed it, things got worse quickly. Here's what happened, why it happened, and how this changed my approach to working on a complicated software project. One thing became apparent: while it may look like a waste of time to build something and revert back to "yesterday's version", I got massively interesting insights into my product and my process along the way.So today, we'll talk about setbacks, getting back up again, and how we can judo a failure into making progress. This episode is sponsored by Acquire.comThe blog post: https://thebootstrappedfounder.com/my-saas-server-exploded-how-i-salvaged-it/The podcast episode: https://tbf.fm/episodes/319-my-saas-server-exploded-how-i-salvaged-itCheck out Podscan to get alerts when you're mentioned on podcasts: https://podscan.fmSend me a voicemail on Podline: https://podline.fm/arvidYou'll find my weekly article on my blog: https://thebootstrappedfounder.comPodcast: https://thebootstrappedfounder.com/podcastNewsletter: https://thebootstrappedfounder.com/newsletterMy book Zero to Sold: https://zerotosold.com/My book The Embedded Entrepreneur: https://embeddedentrepreneur.com/My course Find Your Following: https://findyourfollowing.comHere are a few tools I use. Greece is ramping up its firefighting efforts, with authorities betting on a host of preventive measures - from the deployment of firefighting aircraft to increased staffing in specialized forest firefighting units - as temperatures touched 30 degrees Celsius in late March and wildfires already broke out weeks earlier than expected. On top of multi-agency exercises and drills, Greece is also fast-tracking a 2.1 billion euro program to upgrade its fleet of firefighting aircraft and create an AI-driven sensor network to detect smoke in the early stages of a fire. LSU Tigers defensive coordinator Matt House and three other defensive staff members have been relieved of their duties as of Wednesday afternoon. The LSU Tigers had the 82nd ranked defense in all of college football, giving up just shy of 30 points per game and over 400 yards of total offense. The passing defense boasted an even worse ranking at 118th as LSU gave up, on average, 255 passing yards per game. That average even takes into account the passing stats from struggling pass offenses that LSU faced this season like Army, Auburn, and Grambling State. LSU's defense undoubtedly cost them the game at Ole Miss in which the defense gave up over 700 yards of offense to the Rebs and, by Brian Kelly's calculation, nearly 350 yards in missed tackles alone. LSU's defense had zero answer for stopping Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Jalen Milroe who found the end zone four times with his legs alone. Overall, the defense was atrocious. In fact, it was the worst defense in the history of the LSU Tigers. A change needed to be made. So what comes next? Brandon Marcello of 247Sports reports that there is an early front-runner for the open coordinator position in Baton Rouge. How realistic is the hire? Can that person fix LSU's defense as it enters a gauntlet of a schedule next season? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!
