It's a massive Monday edition of What's On Your Mind as host Scott Hannon counts down to tomorrow's crucial 2026 primary election. Scott fires up the microphone to challenge the traditionally low voter turnout and provides a comprehensive breakdown of the key conservative candidates on the local ballot. State Representative Ben Koppelman drops by to discuss the growing legislative rift with Governor Armstrong over primary endorsements and unpacks a bold new structure to transform future party conventions. Scott also chats with Soybean Council leaders about navigating the trade cold shoulder from China, introduces the District 13 legislative incumbents, and sits down with outspoken Fargo School Board candidate Carissa Jeske. Plus, a deep-dive look into election integrity, a preview of North Dakota's Supreme Court race with Justice Jared Tufti, and a sharp critique of mainstream media "interrogations." Show Notes & Timestamps [00:00] – The 20% Embarrassment & The Governor's Primary Battle Scott kicks off the show with a direct plea to listeners, calling the region's typical 20% primary voter turnout "embarrassing." State Representative Ben Koppelman joins the studio to voice his disappointment with Governor Armstrong's unprecedented involvement in local legislative primaries. The duo debates whether the executive branch is stepping over the line or simply exercising free speech. [04:45] – Overhauling the Party System: Moving Conventions Post-Primary Representative Koppelman introduces a radical legislative idea for the next session: combining the traditional delegate convention system with the primary ballot. Koppelman explains how sealing primary votes and unveiling them at a late-June convention would eliminate party pettiness and incentivize a massive surge in local political engagement. [07:15] – Transparency and Dark Money in Political PACs The conversation turns to campaign finance reform. Koppelman calls out the flaws in current PAC disclosure rules that allow organizations to shield either their donors or their explicit spending trails, demanding total top-to-bottom financial transparency from all active political groups. [11:00] – Soybean Diplomacy: Out-pacing the China Target Market Jim Thompson (North Dakota Soybean Council) and Justin Sherlock (Soybean Growers Association) call in from the fields to deliver a crucial agricultural trade update. With China stalling on Pacific Northwest trade agreements, the leaders detail how they are aggressively opening doors in alternate Southeast Asian markets like Vietnam and Thailand. 282 - Iteration: The Skill That Actually Gets You Unstuck

Start with Small Steps

Play Episode Listen Later May 19, 2026 22:38

Have you ever had a brilliant idea — something you were genuinely excited about — and then done absolutely nothing with it? Or gone all-in on a goal, white-knuckled it for a few weeks, and then watched the whole thing collapse? I've been on both sides of that. Today I want to introduce you to a single, practical skill that changed how I approach almost everything in my life. It's called iteration — and I don't love the word either, but stay with me, because this might be the reframe you've been waiting for.Why We Keep Getting Stuck: The All-or-Nothing TrapMost of us were taught to treat big changes like a straight line: decide, commit, execute, finish. When it doesn't go that way, we decide we failed. Iteration rejects that entirely. Your first attempt was never supposed to be the final answer — it was supposed to give you information. Every attempt is data, not a verdict. What Iteration Actually MeansIteration is a loop, not a line: try something small, collect honest feedback, adjust, and go again. Scientists, designers, athletes, and software teams live by this. At some point, we decided regular people weren't allowed to operate this way. We are. You have more than one shot. Why Small Experiments Work BetterSmall experiments carry lower risk, produce real-world data faster than research ever could, and build the one thing no amount of reading gives you: actual confidence. And here's the kicker — a 1% improvement, repeated, doesn't add up linearly. It compounds dramatically. The tenth version of something is not ten times better than the first; it's in an entirely different league.Iteration in Real Life: Career, Health, Relationships, Creative WorkThe principle is portable. Thinking about a career change? Test it before you quit. Overhauling your health? Add one vegetable serving for ten days. Want to shift a relationship dynamic? Ask one honest question instead of staging the big conversation. Podcasting? Every episode is an iteration. Every area of life where you want growth is a place where small experiments pay off.A Repeatable Five-Step ProcessPick one specific thing. Design a small, time-bound experiment. Run it and capture what actually happens. Review it with curiosity, not judgment. Adjust and go again. That's it. A ten-minute Sunday review ritual is more than enough. What Derails This — and How to Avoid ItPerfectionism, no feedback loop, fear of looking flaky, and analysis paralysis are the four main traps. Iteration isn't flakiness — people who change directions without learning anything based on a mood are flaky. Updating your approach based on real information is the definition of good judgment. Set a timer, make the call, and get moving. You don't need a perfect plan. You need a small experiment and the willingness to pay attention to what happened. The people who make real progress in their lives aren't the ones who got it right the first time — they're the ones who kept adjusting.Jill's Linkshttp://jillfromthenorthwoods.comhttps://www.youtube.com/@startwithsmallstepshttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/startwithsmallstepshttps://twitter.com/schmernEmail the podcast at jill@startwithsmallsteps.comBy choosing to watch this video or listen to this podcast, you acknowledge that you are doing so of your own free will. New York City schools are overhauling the way students learn to read through a literacy initiative known as NYC Reads, built around the “science of reading” movement. City officials say the approach is already improving reading scores. But some teachers, parents and students say the curriculum relies too heavily on worksheets, rigid lessons and short excerpts, leaving students with fewer opportunities to immerse themselves in full books. WNYC's education reporter Jessica Gould joins us to discuss the debate over phonics, reading stamina, and whether schools are improving literacy at the expense of fostering a love of reading. The Supreme Court of India recently asked the Central government to amend the abortion law to remove the time limit on medical terminations of unwanted pregnancies in the case of minor rape victims. While this was observation was made while hearing the case of a 15-year-old rape survivor to terminate a 30-week pregnancy, it throws up broader questions of abortion access in India. While in general there is a belief is that abortion is legal and easily available, the ground reality is a little different. Abortion is legal only under certain circumstances and given certain conditions – it is not freely available to anyone who chooses to have it. Access to it is also uneven and patchy across the country. It also not permitted, unless there is severe foetal anomaly or a risk to the mother's life, beyond 24 weeks. Over the past decade or so, hundreds of cases have ended up in court seeking terminations on unwanted pregnancy. Why is this happening? Is there a case to be made to lift time limits altogether? And do we, in India, need to move from a criminal framework for a health service to a health and rights -based framework? Transforming Performance Management in the Public Sector: John Barrand

In this episode, we sit down with John Barrand, CHRO for the State of Utah, to discuss an inspiring transformation in public sector performance management. John led a bold effort to overhaul Utah's performance management system—moving it from a culture of “adequacy” and silence to one focused on learning, growth, connection, and accountability. John shares how he and his team achieved legislative change requiring quarterly check-ins, implemented management training, and shifted the state's mindset around performance and development. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in...[01:16] Initial state of Utah's performance management system[06:23] Value of continuous learning and curiosity in government [10:06] Defining the “why” for performance management in Utah[17:02] Risks and Resistance in Systemic Change[20:06] Quarterly employee check-ins initiative[25:59] Balancing fairness and measurement without alienating staff [34:28] Creation of a system-wide talent mobility program [40:01] Development of incentive structures and bonus allocations [44:22] Sustainability and future of the programPerformance Management is a Sector-Spanning ChallengePerformance management has a notorious reputation, often maligned as bureaucratic and misaligned. These challenges aren't confined to just the private sector. Public organizations often face a wealth of bureaucracy and challenges that can inhibit transformation, compounded by a cultural tendency towards silence and an adequacy mindset. When John assumed his role in 2021 for the state of Utah, over 70% of employees had an “unknown” performance rating, and only 16% had received annual reviews. The pervasive culture of silence fostered disengagement and suspicion, and performance management, where it occurred, was simply about maintaining adequacy—a relic from nearly a century and a half of defensive bureaucracy. From Compliance to ConnectionThe first pivotal move was defining purpose. Clarity on the “why” behind performance management is crucial. For Utah, the why was growth: enabling employees to learn and grow while retaining top talent—shifting away from the punitive roots of performance management. As John says: “Employees don't want feedback, they want connection. They don't want evaluation, they want attention”.One of the new steps John took was to require quarterly check-in conversations with all employees. The effect was transformational: from just 16% of employees having annual reviews to 89% participating in four quarterly check-ins within the first year. This regular cadence broke the culture of silence, making communication a legal and cultural imperative.Overhauling the System: What ChangedWhere most organizations tinker at the edges, Utah's public sector embraced bold, structural change. They implemented legislation for conversations, which included quarterly check-ins and annual reviews, demonstrating a high-level commitment to improving performance management.Only 30% of managers previously had any training, and now, over 87% have been developed in crucial skills such as feedback, resilience, and collaboration. Utah also funds performance management by reallocating cost-of-living adjustments and introducing performance-driven bonuses. Goals now consist of both output-aligned objectives and developmental “how” objectives, pushing employees to reflect on and improve their impact.Evidence of a Transformed CulturePerformance conversations have become increasingly meaningful. The organization saw a 40% increase in first-year exits for cause—not a sign of ruthless weeding out, but of identifying and addressing performance issues sooner, thereby improving overall health without a drop in retention. High-potential (HIPO) employee retention rates rose 16% above the general population, and newly calibrated bonus systems rewarded and motivated top talent. Utah's success has garnered attention from major institutions—including Harvard and the London School of Economics—looking to distill lessons from its model. Resources & People MentionedUtah Governor's OfficeUtah LegislatureHarvard UniversityLSE HB0104GRIT Initiative      Connect with John BarrandJohn BarrandConnect With Red Thread ResearchWebsite: Red Thread ResearchOn LinkedInOn FacebookOn TwitterSubscribe to WORKPLACE STORIES

The Ontario Government seems to have interest in overhauling the existing education system. From the idea of a CEO and a CEdO (Chief Education Officer), to tying attendance records to final grades, or capping the amount of trustees at a school board, Minister Paul Calandra has eyes on streamlining and tightening where funds go and who gets to spend them. Families, unions and educators alike however, aren't too keen on the changes, claiming the government is pushing its education ministry into corporatization. Host Caryn Ceolin speaks to Kelly Gallagher-Mackay, an education policy expert at Wilfred Laurier University to discuss the changes, how they're going to affect the day-to-day workings of students and teachers, and what the future of education in Ontario could look like. Host: Paul McIntyre, Editor-At-Large Merging two massive holdco structures after the global Omnicom-IPG merger and culling 100 brands is not for the faint hearted. Overhauling the local operating model entirely at the same time? Fraught with risk. But Nick Garrett’s master plan has the blessing of Omnicom chairman John Wren, and Garrett says he wouldn’t have taken the job without licence to radically recut the ANZ business. If it works, “I think the US and other markets are all looking at this with support and optimism, hoping that this is a great test case”, says Garrett. The new model puts a three-pronged upstream advisory layer at the top of its structure, supported by six ‘centres of excellence’, pooling and centralising resources to concentrate firepower as Omnicom heads “upstream”. It’s going head-to-head in “transformation” and business strategy through brand with the likes of Accenture, Deloitte, McKinsey and Bain while taking marketers and customer chiefs upstream with them. Too many marketers have been relegated to execution, per Garrett. He thinks Omnicom Oceania’s new approach can help both parties regain strategic high ground. Corporate and government relations firm GRACosway may play an outsized role in opening up that pathway. A major content and creative automation play for the group is also imminent – but it’s not Ted Horton’s BRX. Garrett says not to undertake radical surgery poses the greatest risk for comms holding companies – they’ve become too narrow and communications focused and lost the strategic high ground across industries and inside corporate executive leadership teams. With IPG absorbed, he thinks widespread industry speculation that at least one, perhaps two fewer direct holdco competitors by year’s end is plausible - a WPP break-up and piecemeal sell-off being one of them. But it’s telling that while eyeing consulting firms’ turf and moving away from a media and creative-led holdco into marketing transformation services, Garrett, when pushed, reckons Publicis is a bigger threat to Omnicom’s new growth model than Accenture Song. Despite the seismic overhaul, Garrett claims Omnicom Oceania is six months ahead of where the market thinks it is. But the proof is in the pudding – there’s a lot riding on whether Omnicom’s people can actually stretch to the new model’s intent. Garrett’s confident. Here’s what’s coming next. From the make-up we wear to the air we breathe, each small decision can either add to our toxic load or ease it.In this episode, you'll learn: ✨ Why endocrine-disrupting chemicals (like BPA and phthalates) act as xenoestrogens, and how they can influence hormone balance, thyroid function, and conditions such as endometriosis. ✨ How to start replacing personal-care and household products using apps like Yuka and Think Dirty. ✨ What to look for in non-toxic cookware and storage containers, and why even BPA-free plastic isn't always safe when heated. ✨ How to improve indoor air quality — from plants and purifiers to essential oil diffusers that cleanse without chemicals. ✨ The truth about laundry and cleaning products, and how simple swaps (like Bio-D or vinegar rinses) can lower chemical exposure dramatically.I'll also share my favourite mini-actions for each area, so you can make these changes gradually and sustainably — because detox should never feel like deprivation. And don't miss the end of this episode, where I reveal details about my free upcoming mini-series on improving vagal tone and nervous system resilience — inspired by my own experience using the Nurosym.
