In the latest edition of his Search for Meaning podcast, Stephen Wise Temple Senior Rabbi Yoshi Zweiback hosts Rabbi Susan Silverman, the founder of Second Nurture, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting a path from foster care to adoption."I grew up in a family that fostered kids, so I saw that up close," Rabbi Silverman says. "Also, I'm a rabbi, and I really believe strongly in the power of community, so I put the two together."In 2016, after meeting hundreds of people in dozens of cities across North America while touring with her book, "Casting Lots: Creating a Family in a Beautiful, Broken World," Rabbi Silverman was convinced that many more people would foster and adopt, if only they had support and direction."Parenting in general is daunting," says Rabbi Silverman, who has adopted two children. "Foster parenting is extra daunting. The process itself is overwhelming."Rabbi Yoshi, who now serves on the organization's board, was one of the first people Rabbi Silverman approached with her idea: An organization that would lower the barrier to entry for foster and adoptive parents by providing guidance, fellowship, and community to those who had the desire to foster and adopt, but lacked the expertise, experience, and wisdom such a community could provide. In 2017, she founded Second Nurture.Fully acknowledging the disproportionate rate at which minority children are separated from families who may very well be able to care for them, Rabbi Silverman has been adamant that Second Nurture operate with racial justice in mind. Studyafter studyhas found that aging out of foster care (or merely being "in the system") carries a strong direct correlation with future incarceration. Beyond providing logistical support to families willing to foster and adopt, Second Nurture also works to address the racial disparities and injustices endemic to the foster care system."We are not policy people," Rabbi Silverman says. "We are not the judges who decide these cases. But, we can say, 'We want to know what the situation is.' We want to have a special kind of program where we're able to foster kids and support the bio family ... We can be a part of a solution, and to partner with people who do have the power, so that we can move this forward in a positive way."

Mark is delighted to welcome Rabbi Susan Silverman to the podcast today. Rabbi Silverman is the founder of KAMOCHA: A Jewish Response to Refugees, is on the Board of Directors of Women of the Wall, and the International Council of The New Israel Fund. She is also the Founding Director of Second Nurture: Every Child Deserves a Family – And a Community, an organization dedicated to providing a path to adoption for “waiting” children by bringing together multiple adults from within the same community who are interested in foster-adoption, creating an adoption cohort, and offering multilayered support throughout the adoption process. The passage she has chosen to discuss is Genesis 1:1-8. Rabbi Silverman’s dual interpretation of the passage sets off a wide ranging discussion between herself and Mark regarding such topics as the two beginnings, the New Years of the Torah, being in relationship with God and others, and the eternal challenge of balancing order and freedom. As the conversation turns to the theme of brokenness, the Rabbi shares her perspective on how this passage, and really the very nature of the Torah, relate to the lives of those children with whom she works through foster care and adoption. She finishes the episode with the lessons she has learned about humankind, particularly about the need for relationship which is so prevalent throughout her vocation of ‘being engaged in the sacred process of helping children from troubled backgrounds to begin again’ - a noble example of this passage brought to life each and every day. Episode Highlights: · Rabbi Silverman’s summary of the passage and its interest for her · Her explanation of the two beginnings · How the passage relates to Rabbi Silverman’s work in foster care and adoption · The New Years in the Jewish calendar · Being in relationship with God and others · The eternal challenge of balancing order and freedom · Brokenness inherent in Creation itself · How foster children relate to this passage practically · Foster children naming their story · The importance of making room for foster children to retell their stories of trauma · The lessons that Rabbi Silverman has learned about humankind . Genesis 1:1-8 Bereshit When God began to create heaven and earth— the earth being unformed and void, with darkness over the surface of the deep and a wind from God sweeping over the water— God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, a first day. God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the water, that it may separate water from water.” God made the expanse, and it separated the water which was below the expanse from the water which was above the expanse. And it was so. God called the expanse Sky. And there was evening and there was morning, a second day. https://www.sefaria.org/Genesis.1.1?lang=en&with=all&lang2=en Links: The Rabbi’s Husband homepage: The Rabbi's Husband Mark’s Twitter: Mark Gerson - The Rabbi's Husband (@markgerson) The Rabbi’s Husband Newsletter contact: mailto:daniel@therabbishusband.com

This week, Uri and Rivky discuss the Israel's new decision to deport Eritrean and Sudanese refugees and ask, is this the right choice? Which "value" should Israel live by - accepting refugees, or creating a strongly Jewish homeland? (Or is that oversimplifying it? Perhaps.) Next, they discuss a new Forward article, in which Eli Steinberg claims that while anti-Semitism is no longer in vogue, instead, the world has shifted to become anti-Orthodox. What is it like when there is a stranger in your midst? What about when that stranger needs your help? Rabbi Susan Silverman and I talked about the status of the African refugees seeking asylum in Israel. She spoke about the laws and the processes that aren’t happening, as well as what is happening in the attempt to deport these men who are seeking a safe place to live. As there are no more refugees entering the country now, it is just a question of how to help those who are already there. Susan offered many practical ideas, and also cofounded Miklat Israel (https://www.facebook.com/MiklatIsrael/) in the event that these refugees need safe places to stay instead of jail or deportation ultimatum that it seems the government is planning to impose. To reach Miklat Israel with offers of housing, email MiklatIsrael@gmail.com. Today's Guest: Susan Silverman, rabbi, international adoption activist, author, Casting Lots: Creating a Family in a Beautiful Broken World   Watch this exclusive Mr. Media interview with Rabbi Susan Silverman by clicking on the video player above!  Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience of full-grown adults who would like a shot at being adopted by the Silverman clan… in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida! Rabbi Susan Silverman is a bit of an alarmist. Don’t believe me? Just read her book. From the Prologue: Page xi: “At recess, I’d puposely get an out in kickball in exchange for my parents still being alive when the 3 p.m. bell rang and the school day was over.” SUSAN SILVERMAN podcast excerpt: "People are more likely to adopt if they feel their community has their back. I would say to people, create a situation in which you can adopt. If you have that in your heart and that capacity in your life, take the risk!" You can LISTEN to this interview with RABBI SUSAN SILVERMAN, author of CASTING LOTS: CREATING A FAMILY IN A BEAUTIFUL, BROKEN WORLD, by clicking the audio player above! And on Page 90, as a grown-ass married woman and mother: “Once, upon hearing of a crash in Russia, I actually figured out how (my husband) could have ended up on that flight, a scenario that included a wrong gate and an absentminded ticketing agent. I had recently spent half the night dialing and re-dialing the front desk of his hotel, asking the same clerk to put me through to his room. I had left messages, but what if he didn’t check them? What if the red light on the hotel-room phone was out? What if he were lying dead in the gutter RIGHT NOW? “…God created the world through poetic speech. I patrolled mine through vigilant bitchiness.” Don’t misunderstand – I’m not making fun of Susan. (Okay, maybe a little. I am married; I know the drill.) As the first-born child of Beth Ann and Donald Silverman, Susan experienced a horrific trauma: her three-month-old baby brother died in his crib while her parents were on a short vacation and the baby was being cared for by Donald’s parents. That 1964 incident—at least from my reading of Susan’s new book, Casting Lots: Creating a Family in a Beautiful, Broken World – colored everything that has followed in her life, from being ordained to raising a family of five, becoming an adoption activist, and relocating from Boston to Jerusalem. SUSAN SILVERMAN podcast excerpt: "My brother, Jeffrey Michael, was a baby when he died-- I don't even remember him. It wasn't until I was an adult and in therapy, talking this intense separation anxiety i have. I mentioned that I had a brother who died when I was two. My therapist said, 'WHAT?' I had been in therapy for three years already. She said, 'Susan, wake up and smell the coffee.' It helped shift things a lot. As did Zoloft." In Casting Lots, Susan tells her story, warts, four-letter words and all, and makes her case for easing restrictions on international adoptions. By the way, I first became interested in Susan last summer when I heard the audiobook edition of her sister Sarah’s book, The Bedwetter, in which the comedian—perhaps best known for her music video, “F*@#ing Matt Damon” and support of candidates Barack Obama and Bernie Sanders—talks in awe about her big sister, the rabbi and mother. Key interview moments: • 3:40 Rabbi Susan Silverman talks about the personal breakthrough in therapy that helped her cope with her intense, lifelong separation anxiety; • 13:10 She offers constructive advice to families considering adoption; • 26:19 Silverman addresses her frustration with what she sees as a shift among aid organizations such as Save the Children and UNICEF away from private adoption and more focused on warehousing orphaned children around the world.
