Episode description: In this episode of Peace Meal, Rachael Steil shares her past struggles with anorexia and binge eating and her current passion for helping athletes with eating disorders. Rachael loved running from a young age, but the drive she felt to improve in her sport contributed to restrictive eating behaviors. She says she became obsessed with food and started pulling away from her friends and hobbies. Once Rachael started her recovery journey, she received incredible support from her college running coach. Reflecting on this experience, Rachael explains the essential role that coaches can have on their athletes' lives and the importance of educating coaches on eating disorder warning signs. Rachael ends the podcast with the inspiration for creating her memoir Running in Silence and her nonprofit of the same name and previews the topic of her next book.  Rachael Steil is an eating disorder recovery advocate and the author of Running in Silence, which details her story as an All-American athlete struggling with anorexia and binge eating. She is also the founder of the Running in Silence nonprofit to break misconceptions and raise awareness for eating disorders in sports, serves on the board of the Michigan Eating Disorder Alliance, and is currently a mentor for the USTFCCCA Female Coaches Mentorship Program.  We cover: How participating in sports that emphasize leanness, like running, can be a factor in the development of eating disorders How eating disorders can affect people in and outside of sport and cause them to pull away from their friends, family, and interests How opening up about your eating disorder can make you feel like your authentic self The role coaches can play in the lives of athletes suffering or recovering from an eating disorder Why it is so vital that coaches get training on how to spot the signs of an eating disorder and what to do if they spot them In Rachael's words: On the impact of her eating disorder: “It affected me in so many other areas besides my weight. I was getting very withdrawn. I was barely hanging out with my friends. I was constantly thinking about food. I was starting to count calories, and pulling away from everything else that I loved in my life… I didn't realize it was partly because I was restricting food; I thought I was finally doing something right.” On prioritizing health over performance in sport: “[My coach] said, ‘You don't have to be fast, you have to be healthy.'” On the important role of the coach: “It's so important to know your athletes well and to develop this relationship with them because you are one of the first people that's going to be able to recognize when there are behavior changes.” If you would like to read the blog mentioned in the episode, “For Coaches, Approaching an Athlete with an Eating Disorder: Q&A with Dr. Paula Quatromoni,” you can find that here. Athletes are driven to succeed in their sport.  This drive is often revered by many as an enviable trait; however, this drive can lead some to adopt a “whatever it takes” mentality.  Disordered eating or eating disorders can be an outcome of this desire to do everything within one's control to succeed.  Rachael Steil has fought the battle to recover from an eating disorder and shares her powerful story in the book Running In Silence (2ndedition, 2020).  She is currently working on a second book.  Her inspirational story of recovery is one that can offer struggling athletes hope.

Rachael Steil formed an early and joyful bond with running - she loved the movement, competition, and exhilaration it gave her. Yet, within a decade, her drive for perfection demolished that love and replaced it with isolation, an eating disorder, anxiety, and health issues.  Now - as a running coach, author, and speaker - Rachael runs towards being an "imperfectionist". This new practice has transformed her relationship with both herself and the up-and-coming athletes she now coaches.

Dr. Paula Quatromoni is an Associate Professor of Nutrition and Epidemiology at Boston University and Chair of the Department of Health Sciences. She is a Registered Dietitian, a senior consultant for Walden Behavioral Care, and one of the leading experts on eating disorders in athletes. Dr. Quatromoni's research includes a focus on eating disorder prevention and treatment. She has published several papers featuring both clinical care and qualitative research on recovery experiences of athletes. In 2004, she pioneered the sports nutrition consult service for student-athletes at Boston University. In 2016, she led the creation of the Walden GOALS program, an intensive outpatient program treating competitive athletes with eating disorders. Dr. Quatromoni earned her B.S. and M.S. degrees in Nutrition from the University of Maine and her Doctorate in Epidemiology from the Boston University School of Public Health. Questions we ask Paul include: How did you get into the field of nutrition? What inspired your research with student athletes? How has COVID impacted your work and nutrition for individuals, communities, and/or athletes specifically? Where do you see gaps in sports nutrition education, research, and/or dissemination? In 2017, you were the PI on a research publication titled, “A Tale of Two Runners: A Case Report of Athletes’ Experiences with Eating Disorders in College.” This publication shared the story of two elite athletes, recruited to the same Division I institution track and field program. However, one athlete was a male and the other was a female. Can you share with us some of the differences that the student-athletes experienced in their experiences with their eating disorders due to gender differences? When it comes to RED-S and/or eating disorders in sport, what are some red flags you encourage coaches, parents, and/or athletes to look for? You contributed to a post titled, “3 Ways Coaches Can Help Prevent Eating Disorders in Athletes” on Running in Silence, a platform created by Rachael Steil. What are a few ways you see coaches and/or parents play a key role in preventing and addressing eating disorders? On tonight's episode, Rachael Steil of Runninginsilence.org stops in to talk about Mary Cain coming forward with her story of abuse and her struggle with her mental health as a member of the Nike Oregon Project. A coach should not abuse their relationship and trust with their athletes... and should know when an athlete needs help. Alberto Salazar didn't care about Mary Cain's mental well being, he didn't care about her as a person and he still thinks he did nothing wrong... and Nike continues to back him. We need to demand better from those at the top of our sport. https://runninginsilence.org/resources/ Preorder Rachael's book - https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdO9cwUhHHKfsexSDRXKP0Uw3fqoEt870EcdZzTDrtifAirfw/viewform Follow me on Twitter - https://twitter.com/hornekerjustin Report SafeSport Violations - http://www.usatf.org/About/SafeSport.aspx
