Resilience isn't about never falling. It's about learning, adapting, and choosing hope, every time. In this episode, host Peter Fenger speaks with Andy Pierce, Resilience Expert and founder of iBounceUp, a Honolulu-based nonprofit transforming lives in at-risk communities. Andy brings a Master's degree in Performance Psychology and extensive experience working with elite Special Operations Soldiers, Army Rangers, adults in addiction recovery, and resource caregivers. Send us a textHave you ever told yourself "I can't do this" based solely on past failures? That moment when your mind convinces you something is impossible despite how much stronger, smarter, or more capable you've become?During a recent Strive Elite workout, I witnessed a member reach her breaking point while attempting an exercise she believed was beyond her capabilities. Tears welled up as she repeatedly told herself she couldn't do it. What followed was a powerful lesson about how our limiting beliefs—often based on outdated experiences—can create artificial barriers to our potential. The breakthrough came from a simple pattern interrupt: standing up, taking a breath, and listening with fresh perspective. After resetting her mindset, this member not only completed the exercise but performed three full sets. The limitation existed solely in her mind, not her physical capabilities.Sometimes we need to borrow belief from others who see potential in us that we don't yet recognize. As a coach, I frequently tell my clients: "I'm not going to ask you to do anything I don't believe you can do." This external confidence can bridge the gap between self-doubt and self-belief until you prove it to yourself through action. This principle applies universally. My entrepreneurial journey includes what I call my "graveyard of businesses"—failed ventures that could have reinforced the belief that success wasn't possible. Instead, I maintained that success was inevitable; it wasn't a question of if, but when. Strive 11 emerged after five years of ups and downs, demonstrating that persistence eventually overcomes temporary failure.Whatever goal you're pursuing, remember that your past performance is not your permanent truth. Set mini-milestones, celebrate small wins, and be willing to step back up to the plate and swing again. Your breakthrough is waiting on the other side of that limiting belief.Have you been holding yourself back based on outdated beliefs about your capabilities? When Kent was three years old, he went into kidney failure. While in the hospital, he watched everyone in the unit die around him. He was the only one who lived. This was Kent's first exposure to trauma, which extended into a childhood marked by racism and abuse from people in his Alaskan village. It would be many years before Kent would find the name for the symptoms he'd experienced most of his life: PTSD.Kent went on to become a pastor and pastored in Alaska for forty years. During that time, he discovered many people felt they needed to pretend they were perfect and admit they were living the victorious Christian life. Kent disagreed. He made it his mission to create safe places where people could be authentic, where people could lament trauma in order to live from a place of wellness. As Ken will tell you, he chooses not to live from a place of hurt. He lives from a place of joy. Be sure to listen to the end of this episode when Kent shares a miraculous and gripping story of redemption and forgiveness. You will be moved! After earning his PhD in Performance Psychology, Kent is now the President and Founder of Second Curve Coaching, an organization dedicated to helping people achieve their God-given mission. Roxy's Ride & Inspire RAWcast - Mountain Bike & Mindset Podcast
Whether you're struggling with steep trails, feeling stuck in your skills, or just want to train smarter, this episode offers fresh insights from the world of elite music performance — applied directly to mountain biking. In this powerful conversation, Roxy talks with Noa Kageyama, performance psychologist and creator of The Bulletproof Musician, about the fascinating overlap between music and mountain biking, and what both worlds can teach us about motor learning, fear, and practice that truly sticks - not just "in the practice room", but when we actually need to perform. You'll learn: - What separates practice that sticks from performance that fades - Why your level of fatigue and your strength, but also your skills, directly affects how much fear you feel - How practice influences line choices - Why adult learners need different strategies than kids — and how to adjust - The truth about “muscle memory” and what actually builds confidence - Why variability in MTB practice improves skill retention - How to stop chasing perfection and start focusing on sustainable progress - Why practice needs to be "messy" and how to make mountain biking safer, while still improving!

#74: [Inside the Mind] Dr. Joseph Parent: Unconditional Confidence, Remaining on the Offensive, and How to Go Low with the PAR Method In this powerful and enlightening episode of The Scratch Golfer's Mindset Podcast, I'm joined by Dr. Joseph Parent, author of Zen Golf and one of the most respected minds in golf psychology. Together, we break down the mental collapse Rory McIlroy experienced at Augusta, why players in the lead shift from offensive to defensive mindsets, and how to overcome the urge to “protect” a lead that doesn't actually exist. Dr. Parent unpacks the roots of time-traveling thoughts, teaches how to return to presence with the “Love the Way It Leaves” mindset, and shares his proven PAR method: Preparation, Action, and Response to Results. In today's episode, you'll learn: Why shifting from offensive to defensive play derails your round How “protecting a lead” is a mental trap What real focus and commitment look like on a shot How to let go of the past (and future) and return to presence Why most players collapse in Amen Corner — and how to prevent it The PAR method to respond to good and bad shots alike How to build unconditional confidence regardless of current performance Whether you're a 20 handicap or chasing scratch, this episode will radically shift how you view confidence, pressure, and progress. Get your pencils ready and start listening. P.S. Curious to learn more about the results my clients are experiencing and what they say about working with me? Read more here. Instagram: @thegolfhypnotherapist Twitter: @parsoverbogeys Key Takeaways: You don't “have” the lead — you only have your next shot. Treat each one with the same intention. Offense wins in golf. Shifting to “protect” a score leads to tentative swings and poor decisions. Commitment is clarity. A vague shot plan leads to vague swings. Clear images = clear results. Most bad shots stem from mental interference, not swing flaws — especially under pressure. Return to presence by letting go. Your body is always here. It's your mind that time travels. “Love the way it leaves.” Focus on your process, not the outcome. Unconditional confidence means trusting your skills even when results aren't there yet. Key Quotes: “You're not holding the lead. You're just holding onto an idea that doesn't exist yet.” “Golfers say, ‘If I can just par in…' — that's when the mind shifts into protection mode and everything tightens.” “A vague image produces a vague swing. Clarity of image is clarity of action.” “If you're not present on 15, your body's already in the bar on 19.” “You never calm up. You calm down. So stop trying to be up-tight and start getting down-settled.” “Focus on loving the way it leaves. That's all you can control.” “When you're out of your own way, your true skill level shows up.” Time Stamps: 00:00: Rory McIlroy's Performance at the Masters 09:07: The Defensive Mindset in Golf 14:01: Maintaining an Offensive Mindset 19:00: Being Present in the Moment 23:09: Caveman Lessons: The Roots of Fear and Awareness 26:04: The PAR Approach: Preparation, Action, and Response 30:20: Focusing on Process Over Outcome 32:33: Understanding Unconditional Confidence 35:15: Cultivating Unconditional Confidence 38:41: Practicing Mindfulness Off the Course 42:30: Common Misconceptions About Mindfulness 44:32: The Billboard Message: Take Golf Seriously, Not Yourself 45:37: Patience and Humor in the Journey to Improvement
