#74: [Inside the Mind] Dr. Joseph Parent: Unconditional Confidence, Remaining on the Offensive, and How to Go Low with the PAR Method In this powerful and enlightening episode of The Scratch Golfer's Mindset Podcast, I'm joined by Dr. Joseph Parent, author of Zen Golf and one of the most respected minds in golf psychology. Together, we break down the mental collapse Rory McIlroy experienced at Augusta, why players in the lead shift from offensive to defensive mindsets, and how to overcome the urge to “protect” a lead that doesn't actually exist. Dr. Parent unpacks the roots of time-traveling thoughts, teaches how to return to presence with the “Love the Way It Leaves” mindset, and shares his proven PAR method: Preparation, Action, and Response to Results. In today's episode, you'll learn: Why shifting from offensive to defensive play derails your round How “protecting a lead” is a mental trap What real focus and commitment look like on a shot How to let go of the past (and future) and return to presence Why most players collapse in Amen Corner — and how to prevent it The PAR method to respond to good and bad shots alike How to build unconditional confidence regardless of current performance Whether you're a 20 handicap or chasing scratch, this episode will radically shift how you view confidence, pressure, and progress. Get your pencils ready and start listening. P.S. Curious to learn more about the results my clients are experiencing and what they say about working with me? Read more here. Instagram: @thegolfhypnotherapist Twitter: @parsoverbogeys Key Takeaways: You don't “have” the lead — you only have your next shot. Treat each one with the same intention. Offense wins in golf. Shifting to “protect” a score leads to tentative swings and poor decisions. Commitment is clarity. A vague shot plan leads to vague swings. Clear images = clear results. Most bad shots stem from mental interference, not swing flaws — especially under pressure. Return to presence by letting go. Your body is always here. It's your mind that time travels. “Love the way it leaves.” Focus on your process, not the outcome. Unconditional confidence means trusting your skills even when results aren't there yet. Key Quotes: “You're not holding the lead. You're just holding onto an idea that doesn't exist yet.” “Golfers say, ‘If I can just par in…' — that's when the mind shifts into protection mode and everything tightens.” “A vague image produces a vague swing. Clarity of image is clarity of action.” “If you're not present on 15, your body's already in the bar on 19.” “You never calm up. You calm down. So stop trying to be up-tight and start getting down-settled.” “Focus on loving the way it leaves. That's all you can control.” “When you're out of your own way, your true skill level shows up.” Time Stamps: 00:00: Rory McIlroy's Performance at the Masters 09:07: The Defensive Mindset in Golf 14:01: Maintaining an Offensive Mindset 19:00: Being Present in the Moment 23:09: Caveman Lessons: The Roots of Fear and Awareness 26:04: The PAR Approach: Preparation, Action, and Response 30:20: Focusing on Process Over Outcome 32:33: Understanding Unconditional Confidence 35:15: Cultivating Unconditional Confidence 38:41: Practicing Mindfulness Off the Course 42:30: Common Misconceptions About Mindfulness 44:32: The Billboard Message: Take Golf Seriously, Not Yourself 45:37: Patience and Humor in the Journey to Improvement

Topics Baseball has been thought of as a physical, mental, and emotional development game. Where have you seen the most changes in the areas of player development both positive and negative? In your day to day with your clients, we have spoken of the thought that there is noa definitive standard on how to throw a baseball....... Give me your thoughts.... Please expound on this area as much as you desire......... Before we get into the topics - why is it so important for training protocols to be individualized? TJ epidemic (tip of the iceberg). your thoughts and where do you see the most damage being done in your day-to-day operations? Contributing factors: Improper throwing mechanics. Improper rest (weekly, monthly, annually), throwing year-round. Max effort philosophy in throwing and performance Pitch counts are adhered to in MILB and MLB but not in privatized amateur baseball Travel and Showcase baseball. Ex. 6 games on a weekend, where else does this happen? Your thoughts on overall pitching development. Where do you place the importance in how you teach and coach? It is a small world but sometimes it is difficult to get the message to the players, parents, and coaches due to all the noise...... Many of the leading experts in the field of baseball and athletic performance such as Dr. James Andrews states, “Baseball is a development game”. One thing that we continually hear is, if we get this guy stronger, he's going to be way better. They skip essential steps along the way such as proper movement patterns, creating force with the prime movers, and the ability to move force through the kinetic chain with proper stability in the joints. What are the problems that this way of doing things has created in young ball players and athletes? Examples: max effort long toss / light dumbell vs tubing What are the areas of most need in the young athletes that you work with? We often discuss the importance of the ability to hinge, is there any particular exercise progression that you use with your clients to help them improve this ability We live in the world of Max effort throwing and often is very difficult to get young players to understand the importance of rhythm and timing. Is there anything in particular that you do to help athletes improve in this area? Can you explain the problems created by bad posture, such as winged scapula improper, scapular stability or improper, scapular rhythm and timing in overhand throwers? Along these lines in the young athlete, we often come across upper-trapezius dominant individuals. What are some of the ways you have helped to improve mid to lower trapezius function? and please discuss the importance of this. Why do you think modern training goals have become so focused on strength and power? Can you explain some pitfalls of this mindset?

He is part of the Sport Performance Research Group in the Sport, Health and Performance Enhancement (SHAPE) Research Centre and is a PhD researcher focusing on resilience in youth football. Ben's research interests are observational methods and assessment in sport psychology, resilience behaviours in youth football and resilience development practices. Before moving into lecturing, Ben was a research associate at The University of Nottingham on the Steps to Active Kids (STAK) project that sought to evaluate the impact of a school-based physical activity programme on outcomes including self-efficacy and obesity risk factors. Ben is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has a Postgraduate diploma in teaching in the lifelong learning sector. After graduating from York St John University on a BA (Honours) degree in Sport Studies and Psychology, Ben completed an MSc in Sport Psychology at the same institution. Mustafa is Associate Professor of Sport and Performance Psychology at Nottingham Trent University. His main area of research is on individual, team and organisational resilience in elite sport. Mustafa has a background in teaching and research with most of his research focusing on the psychology of sporting and performance excellence, specifically looking at resilience in high achievers in sport and business. Mustafa also works with coaches and organisations helping them to develop resilience in athletes and teams. We talk about a brilliant paper led by Ben and co-authored by Mustafa and Dr Chris Saward and Dr Julie Johnston entitled “Exploring the behavioral indicators of resilience in professional academy youth soccer”. The study offers insight into the observable behaviours characterising resilience in youth soccer. Participants identified 36 resilience behaviours, highlighting the multifaceted nature of the concept in this specific context. The results provide a platform to support practitioners in observing resilience behaviours and structuring practices for resilience assessment and development. The findings of this study can support youth soccer players in reflecting on their behavioural responses to in-game stressors, and thus better understand how and when they demonstrate resilience.
Simone Biles became the Olympic All Around champion for a second time in Paris yesterday. In doing so, she defeated her rivals, seemingly conquered gravity on some elements, and put to rest certain 'demons' from Tokyo 2021. Back then, she withdrew from competition citing a case of "the twisties". But what are the twisties? Often described as equivalent to the "yips" that affect golfers, the twisties can affect athletes in skill movement sports, effectively costing them the ability to know where their bodies are in space. To explore this phenomenon, and understand how athletes overcome it, we are joined by Prof Dave Collins, a performance psychologist with 40 years' experience in elite sport. Prof Collins has worked with 90 elite athletes, many in sports where the dreaded twisties can strike, such as freestyle skiing, BMX, snowboarding and gymnastics. He explains the differences between the yips and the twisties, and offers insights into they are conquered.Show notesHere's where you go to sign up for Patron, with a small monthly pledge, which then gives you access to our Discourse forum where other listeners share their thoughts and responses to these issuesGuest Prof Dave Collins' website Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast.
