Send us Fan MailVogue called Tracy Ellis Ross's afro a “cloud bob,” and I couldn't let that slide. Not because the photo wasn't stunning, but because that one little rename reveals a whole system: the way Black hair gets rejected as “too much” until it's repackaged with softer language for a wider audience. The hair didn't change. The narrative did. And when the narrative changes, so does who gets access, who gets praised, and who gets policed. As a hairstylist, I've watched Black women carry the weight of other people's opinions about our natural texture. I've seen the unlearning, the second guessing, and the feeling that something needs to be “fixed” just to be seen as professional. So when mainstream beauty media suddenly elevates the same coils and kinks under a trendy new term, it raises the question I can't ignore: was it ever about the hair, or was it always about who had the power to name it?I'm also pulling back to look at Black hair history, because this isn't just about a magazine caption. Our hair has always been tied to identity, community, and culture, and language is one of the first places that erasure slips in. This bonus finale closes season five while giving you a clear preview of season six: deeper conversations on texturism, racism, hair politics, and how perception shapes what the world calls “beautiful.”Subscribe so you don't miss what's next, share this with someone who needs to hear it, and leave a review telling me one word you wish people would stop using to describe Black hair.Support the showDo you have a story to share that's worth our listeners hearing, please fill out the Listener Letters Form and tell us your story! After a short catch up between the hosts and Caitlin's Olympic coverage in The Scroll, Jann Arden welcomes special guests Meredith McNeil and Jennifer Whalen of CBC's Small Achievable Goals. They share their experiences with menopause and how they factored into the creation of their show. They compare stories that address the challenges of menopause and explore the cultural shifts surrounding women's voices and health discussions. They also discuss te impact of shame on their experiences, the current flourishing state of Canadian television, and the impact of Catherine O'Hara's legacy. Season two of Small Achievable Goals follows Julie Muldoon (Jennifer Whalen) and Kris Fine (Meredith MacNeill), two very different women navigating friendship and the hormonal hurricane of menopause while trying to keep their new podcast and their sanity intact. Life as the Podcast Folks have known it is upheaved under the ownership of Amanda King (Tamara Podemski) and the company culture of Queen of Kings. What started as a dream job for Kris and Julie quickly becomes a nightmare as they struggle to make an honest, raw and real show about menopause while attempting to navigate the change themselves. Jennifer Whalen is a writer, actor, improviser, and Showrunner. She is co-creator, writer and star of the comedy series Small Achievable Goals (CBC). She is also one fourth of Baroness von Sketch Show, as a co-creator, writer, star and showrunner of seasons four and five. Jennifer was head writer for the award-winning satirical comedy This Hour Has 22 Minutes. She developed long-running shows Little Mosque On the Prairie (CBC/Mind's Eye) and Instant Star (CTV/Epitome). She has also worked on The Ron James Show (CBC), The Jon Dore Show (Comedy Network/IFC), and the critically acclaimed Gavin Crawford Show (Comedy Network/Shaftesbury). She originated the role of the Aviatrix in the Tony Award Winning Musical Drowsy Chaperone. She enjoys video games and is easily startled. Meredith MacNeill is a Canadian showrunner, producer, writer, and actress. She is most known for creating and starring in the critically acclaimed series Baroness Von Sketch Show, which was named one of The 10 Best Sketch-Comedy Shows to Stream by Vanity Fair. VOGUE Magazine said, "Baroness Von Sketch Show is the best thing to come out of Canada since Ryan Gosling." Throughout the seasons on CBC and IFC, the show received multiple Canadian Screen Awards, including Best Sketch Comedy Show & Ensemble Performance, an ACTRA Award and a Canadian Comedy Award. Meredith recently wrapped Season 2 of her hit comedy series Small Achievable Goals for the CBC, which she co-created, co-showruns, and co-stars with fellow Baroness alum Jennifer Whalen. As an actress, Meredith also starred in the CBC series Pretty Hard Cases which earned her multiple Canadian Screen Award nominations. She voices the role of Harper Cutlass in the upcoming feature Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie. Previously she was both a writer and regular cast member in the hit satirical news program This Hour Has 22 Minutes for the CBC. https://gem.cbc.ca/small-achievable-goals #ASKJANN - want some life advice from Jann? The class was, in a word, invaluable!" -- Carly Van Thomme"Wendy encourages her students to dig deeper -- and the results show. I highly recommend her. She is insightful, conscientious, and supportive. I couldn't ask for more." -- Michele Meek"Wendy is that tough critic who can be the best thing that happens to your manuscript." -- Lucey BowenAcclaim for Wendy's memoir"Deeply funny." – Vogue Magazine"Wry, funny." – Outside Magazine"Mix David Sedaris, Lucille Ball, and a fifth of tequila in a blender [and] you get Wendy Dale, who is quite possibly the funniest travel writer since Homer. But strain off the foamy giggles and you're left with a raw, smart, and passionate woman in search of herself and awestruck at the beauty of even the ugliest corners of the earth." – Deborah C. Kogan, author of Shutterbabe""Dale has an amazing ability not only to find intrigue and drama and hardship but to meet them all with an undampened sense of humor and a roving eye for the absurd. And by getting entangled in other people's lives, as opposed to hiking through rain forests, she enjoys glimpses into worlds forever closed to the average tourist. A few years ago, Janet Malcolm, writing in the New Yorker, complained that she ‘always found travel writing a little boring' because ‘travel itself is a low-key emotional experience, a pallid affair in comparison with ordinary life' … which is absolutely true, unless you travel like Wendy Dale." – Thomas Swick, travel editor of the Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel"This is a wonderful book – not a subversive treatise on rule-breaking as the title might suggest, but a witty, insightful memoir of a young woman from an offbeat, though well-traveled family." – Bookpage"With grace, charm and abundant humor, Dale narrates her meandering story of a childhood regained, ‘a chance to make rash decisions, to take wild risks, to lose everything knowing I'd still have plenty of time to earn it all back.'" – Time Out New York"Funny, impulsive, and alluringly naïve, Wendy Dale is repeatedly swept into adventure and trouble and love, mostly when she's looking the other way. I had a great time going along on her wacky journey. Kerry McCoy will speak with New York advertising executive Madonna Badger, creator of the We Are #WomenNotObjects ad that debuted at Cannes Film Festival and has been viewed more than 2 million times on YouTube. Badger left the advertising industry for more than a year after a tragic house fire on Christmas morning that claimed the lives of her three young daughters and both her parents. After the tragedy, Badger spent a few months in psychiatric hospitals for manic depression and suicidal ideation. Badger contacted her college roommate, Kate Askew of Little Rock, for refuge. During that year of recuperation, Badger began healing from the immense pain of losing so many loved ones at once. Assisted by the Askew family, Helen Porter, one of the founders of the Psychiatric Research Institute at the University of Arkansas and Dr. Richard Smith, director of the Institute and Institute staff, Badger recovered enough to return to New York. Before reestablishing her work routine, she accompanied another friend from Arkansas to an orphanage in Thailand, where she found additional healing through the stories and love of the orphaned girls there. Badger wrote in Vogue Magazine, “It's never going to be easy. The pain is just so huge that sometimes it feels like a prison cell. But trying really hard to not feel sorry for myself makes me feel good. Being of service helps the pain to go away, if only for a little while, and giving and receiving love makes me feel good. Basically, I go to wherever the light is, because anything else is darkness, and it can be a deeply black darkness.” Her tragic, yet inspirational story, her business and her volunteer work and more will be discussed during the hour-long interview.

"We have to go in there and find out what the core wounds are associated with the trauma and recondition those ideas about ourselves." ~Thais Gibson In this conversation, Jennifer Hurvitz interviews Thais Gibson, a counselor and co-founder of The Personal Development School. They discuss topics such as shadow work and attachment styles. Shadow work explores and integrates the parts of ourselves that we try to deny or hide. It involves identifying triggers and examining the root causes of our reactions. In this conversation, Thais Gibson discusses the importance of reconditioning core wounds and beliefs about oneself to heal from trauma and develop a secure attachment style. She emphasizes the need to move beyond simply blaming others for our problems and instead focus on understanding and changing our beliefs. Thais also explains the five key pillars of becoming securely attached: reconditioning core wounds, knowing and communicating our needs, setting boundaries, regulating our nervous system, and positively reinforcing good behavior. She provides practical tips for effective communication and suggests setting a timeline for personal growth and relationship change. Takeaways Core wounds are subconscious beliefs about ourselves that often stem from past experiences. Healing core wounds involves reconditioning the subconscious through repetition, emotion, and imagery. The three-step process for healing core wounds includes finding the opposite of the core wound, identifying ten memories of feeling the opposite, and recording and listening to those memories for 21 days. Reconditioning core wounds and beliefs about oneself is essential for healing from trauma and developing a secure attachment style. Blaming others for our problems is not productive; instead, we should focus on understanding and changing our beliefs. The five key pillars of becoming securely attached are reconditioning core wounds, knowing and communicating our needs, setting boundaries, regulating our nervous system, and positively reinforcing good behavior. Effective communication involves positive framing, clearly showing what we need, seeing our needs through, and positively reinforcing good behavior. Setting a timeline for personal growth and relationship change can help determine if the other person is willing to do the work and make a positive difference. 00:00 Introduction of Thais Gibson 08:26 Exploring Shadow Work 19:09 Understanding and Healing Core Wounds 23:23 Reconditioning the Subconscious Mind 29:22 The Five Key Pillars of Becoming Securely Attached 36:59 Knowing and Communicating Our Needs 39:27 Setting a Timeline for Personal Growth and Change Find Thais Gibson here: https://attachment.personaldevelopmentschool.com/quiz?utm_source=google-search&utm_medium=cpc-lead&utm_campaign=18002521894&utm_term=&gc_id=18002521894&h_ad_id=627022430545&utm_content=thais%20gibson&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwmOm3BhC8ARIsAOSbapVXHyvN9RJxNmNtZEIzdKCU-ep6KM8Mum1CvfK7kL7XvGK1kGRfSqYaAirBEALw_wcB Doing Relationships Right hits the pages of VOGUE MAGAZINE- check it out! One day over a decade ago, photographer Andrew Garn looked at a pigeon -- really LOOKED at one -- and was stunned. The iridescent feathers. The fan-like sweep of their wings. Their luminous eyes. He realized he would never look at them the same way again and began photographing them. Then he started volunteering for a bird rescue organization and really got to know them. He joins us to discuss his new book, The New York Pigeon: Behind The Feathers.*This episode is guest hosted by Kousha Navidar.

Dr. Francisca Ikuenobe is a Professor of Geology and Geophysics at the Missouri University of Science and Technology. In her research, Franca studies rocks to understand the clues they can reveal about the living things, environments, and climates of the past. Franca is particularly interested in the microfossils of pollen, spores, and phytoplankton that are preserved in rock. She uses these to help determine the age of rocks and what they can tell us about the history of an area. Franca loves reading entertainment magazines like Vogue Magazine and watching entertainment news on TV. When Entertainment Tonight is about to start, she drops everything she's doing to watch it. She received her B.Sc. in Geology from the University of Ife in Nigeria (now Obafemi Awolowo University). Afterwards, Francisca worked as a production geologist and subsequently a palynologist for Shell Petroleum Development Company for a year before enrolling in graduate school. She received her M.Sc. in applied geology also from the University of Ife where she next worked as an assistant lecturer. Francisca was awarded a Commonwealth Scholarship Commission Award for her Ph.D. work in Geology at Cambridge University. Following the completion of her Ph.D., Francisca joined the faculty at Missouri S&T where she is today. Francisca has received various awards and honors for her work, including being named an Honorary Global Counselor by Missouri S&T's Office of International and Cultural Affairs, an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, an African Scientific Institute Fellow, an elected fellow of the Geological Society of America, as well as receipt of the Distinguished Service Award from Goretti Old Girls International, Inc. and receipt of the Science and Technology Award from the Nigerian People's Forum. In addition, Francisca has been awarded the Outstanding Teaching Award, Outstanding Students Leaders' Outstanding Student Advocate Award, the Faculty Excellence Award, Sustained Excellence in Teaching Award, and the Woman of the Year Award all from Missouri S&T. Francisca joined us for an interview to talk about some of her experiences in life and science.

We don't know exactly what the LSU Tigers offense will look like without Heisman Trophy winning quarterback, future first round picks Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr., and Broyles Award finalist offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock; but we do know that it will look different. But just how different exactly? How will new co-offensive coordinators Joe Sloan and Cortez Hankton make up for Daniels' 135 rushing attempts? Sloan spoke with the media after spring practice earlier this week to address offensive positional battles, QB Garrett Nussmeier's development as he grows into the starting role, and what fans can expect from the offense this upcoming season.Plus, LSU women's basketball star Angel Reese announces in Vogue Magazine that she will declare for the WNBA Draft along with Iowa Hawkeye Caitlin Clark, Stanford Cardinal Cameron Brink, and South Carolina Gamecock Kamila Cardoso, along with several other stars in the sport. Head coach Kim Mulkey will not only have to replace Reese, however. Tigers point guard Hailey Van Lith, who transferred into LSU this past season from Louisville, announced Thursday afternoon that she plans to enter the transfer portal.
