Text us your thoughts about this episode or ideas for future episodes! After reading her book, "The Longest Race: Inside the Secret World of Abuse, Doping, and Deception on Nike's Elite Running Team", I was eager to connect with Kara Goucher for an in-depth conversation. For those less familiar with the road running scene, Kara was one of the top American distance runners of the 2000s and 2010s, achieving podium finishes at prestigious events like the Boston and New York City Marathons, as well as the 2012 Olympic Marathon Trials. She also claimed victory at the US Half Marathon Championships the same year, among numerous other accolades. In 2004, she joined the Nike Oregon Project, led by distance running legend Alberto Salazar. Behind the scenes, however, Salazar was pushing the boundaries of anti-doping regulations while fostering a toxic culture of misogyny and athlete abuse. Despite the risk of losing everything and facing immense pressure, Kara found the courage to speak out and successfully advocate for meaningful change. In our discussion, we explore various themes from The Longest Race, and we also discuss current events, including her podcast with Des Linden - "Nobody Asked Us", and the challenges with today's anti-doping investigative models. Before we dive in, please note that this episode is a crossover from my guest-hosting stint on the Run To The Top podcast earlier this spring. Katie Steele fell in love with sports at an early age. By the time she reached high school, that love had developed into a passion for competitive running. But the fun of racing turned destructive as Steele progressed through the competitive world of top level collegiate racing in the US, the NCAA. Her experiences were further exacerbated by the involvement of now banned running coach Alberto Salazar, whose influence had a traumatic and life-long impact on Steele's mental, emotional, and physical health. Despite all that Steele's been through, however, she has an enduring love of life as an athlete. She just wants to see it become better. Steele's running story and love of being an athlete fuel her passion to help create this change, and her professional life is dedicated to making it happen. Because, the unfortunate reality is that, while Steele's running story took place several years ago, many of the harms she experienced in the name of performance, as well as those she's identified in her subsequent professional life, still exist today. These are practices and approaches to coaching, training, and competition that need to be addressed. In the meantime, female athletes continue to pay an unnecessarily high price, with their mental, physical, and emotional health, to achieve their athletic goals. Reimagining a system of sport that works to support whole female health, for athletic pursuits and beyond, is the central focus of the new book The Price She Pays: Confronting the Hidden Mental Health Crisis in Women's Sports—from the Schoolyard to the Stadium by Steele and Dr. Tiffany Brown, with Erin Strout. This episode is being released on the occasion of the book's publication. Steele is a licensed marriage and family therapist and the co-founder of Thrive Mental Health, which is an outpatient medical health clinic in Bend, Oregon. Steele is also the executive director of the Athletes Mental Health Foundation, which is a nonprofit created to help young athletes understand and address their internal wellbeing. Additionally, Steele is the co-host with Tiffany Brown of the excellent new podcast Sports Shrinks.  Steele's story is important, difficult, and powerful. Ultimately, it is hopeful. Alberto Salazar was once the most revered running coach in the world, leading athletes including Mo Farah to the very top of their game. But, in 2019, Salazar was banned from athletics for violating anti doping rules. This week's guest, Steve Magness, had worked alongside him at the Nike Oregon Project – and he was the whistleblower whose claims were followed up by a BBC Panorama and Pro Publica investigation, leading, ultimately, to Salazar's downfall. It's fascinating to hear Steve explaining his role in what is a truly incredible tale. While he says being a whistleblower led to a traumatic nine-year period of his life, he says he doesn't regret it. And what he learned during that time informed his most recent book – called Do Hard Things. He busts myths around what toughness and resilience really mean – toughness isn't about projecting confidence, it's about uncovering authenticity - and encourages people to question what doing hard things really means. It's not just about the more obvious stuff, like running marathons, and taking ice baths – but about being authentic, having hard conversations through to sitting still and doing nothing. "It just felt like the right time. My body hasn't held up to the training necessary to compete. There's nothing I can really do about it. I'm so thankful for the career that I had. It's led me to some of the best connections and relationships in my life. I couldn't imagine I would've got this far when I started. The competitor in me believes there are things I could've done that I didn't but that's how it goes in this sport. You're never going to be truly satisfied." After eight years of running professionally, Eric Jenkins has retired. The announcement was made on the latest episode of The CITIUS MAG Podcast. The Portsmouth, New Hampshire native finished his career with personal bests of 3:35.94 for 1500m; 3:53.23 for the mile, 13:05.85 for 5000m and 27:22.06 for 10,000m.  He broke out as a junior at Northeastern when he ran 7:46.21 to finish second in the 3,000m at the NCAA Indoor Championships (the ninth-fastest performance in NCAA history at the time) only to be DQ'ed controversially. He went on to transfer to Oregon and finished second at the 2014 NCAA Cross Country Championships before winning two individual indoor titles at 3000m and 5000m. Jenkins graduated and signed with Nike and spent time working under Alberto Salazar and the Nike Oregon Project, Pete Julian and the Union Athletics Club and Andy Powell. While many people within the track and field community may think of him for his reputation as a fun off-season guy or his hilarious Instagram videos, many don't realize just how intense he was as an athlete. It showed when he finished fourth at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials, qualified for the 2017 World Championships and managed to win the Millrose Games' Wanamaker Mile and 5th Avenue Mile. Listen to the full conversation on The CITIUS MAG Podcast for more stories by Jenkins including being a punk in high school, deciding to take the sport seriously/breaking out at Northeastern, #FreeJenkins, landing at Oregon and winning two titles, his time at the Nike Oregon Project and what he considers his best race ever. In this episode, Alan and Liz chat about Kara Goucher's recently released book, The Longest Race. They'll tell you what they learned, what they thought, and why they wanted to read the book in the first place.Kara Goucher grew up with Olympic dreams. She excelled at running from a young age and was offered a Nike sponsorship deal when she graduated from college. Then in 2004, she was invited to join a secretive, lavishly funded new team, dubbed the Nike Oregon Project. Coached by distance running legend Alberto Salazar, it seemed like the opportunity of a lifetime. Although Alberto initially let her train with the team because he was more interested in her husband Adam, his focus shifted once she won a World Championship medal. She later went to the Olympics, and stood on the podium at the New York and Boston marathons, just like her coach. Those podiums are what the world saw, but behind the scenes, Salazar pushed the limits of anti-doping rules, and created what Kara experienced as a culture of abuse, the extent of which she reveals in her book for the first time. Meanwhile, Nike stood by Alberto for years and proved itself capable of shockingly misogynistic corporate practices.Kara Goucher is a three-time NCAA champion, two-time Olympian, winner of the silver medal at the 2007 World Championships in the 10,000 meters, and a podium finisher at the Boston and New York Marathons. She is a running analyst for NBC Sports. She cohosts the hit running commentary podcast Nobody Asked Us with Des & Kara, as well as the Clean Sport Collective podcast, promoting fair play in sports. She lives in Boulder, Colorado, with her Olympic-runner husband, Adam, and their son, Colt. Her website is KaraGoucher.com.Mary Pilon is a journalist focused primarily on the worlds of sports and business. She is the author of the bestselling books "The Monopolists" and "The Kevin Show," the co-editor of “Losers: Dispatches From the Other Side of the Scoreboard,” and co-host and co-author of the audio series “Twisted: The Story of Larry Nassar and the Women Who Brought Him Down.” Her work regularly appears in the New Yorker, Esquire, Bloomberg BusinessWeek, Vice, New York, and The New York Times, among other publications. She has worked as a producer with NBC at the 2016 Rio Olympics and on HBO's forthcoming documentary “BS High.” She is currently co-directing a documentary about pickleball for Peter Berg's Film 45. Pilon previously was a staff reporter with The Times on the sports desk and at The Wall Street Journal, where she covered various aspects of business and finance. Today on the podcast, I chat to Jon Marcus an established and extremely well-versed distance running coach from the US. Jon is co-host of the ‘On coaching podcast' with Steve Magness, this is one of my favourite running podcasts. Jon regularly questions the status quo, his blend of science, art, history and openness has been a breath of fresh air for a young running coach like myself. Besides; 'we don't know what we don't know.' Throughout the years Jon has coached hundreds of athletes, read thousands of books (his home book library is exhaustive) and has had some amazing mentors/friends and influences in the running world, including; Rob Connor, Jerry Schumacher, Alberto Salazar, Steve Magness, Mike Smith, Dan Mackey etc… It was a fantastic opportunity to chat to Jon today and pick his brain. I have been a member of his online run coaching scholar program for the past year now, this experience has well and truly helped broadened my perspective and the way I approach running/life. Today we talk about; -Why do we gravitate to linear/dichotomous ways of thought? Why is it important to keep reminding ourselves that the world is complex? -Why is it important for runners/coaches to always remain hungry to learn? -How important is individualisation/personalisation in running? -We bring into question, the ‘mileage obsession' in the distance running community. -and finish with what Jon learnt most from his experiences with; Alberto Salazar, Jerry Schumacher and Rob Connor? I hope you enjoy this chat, I hope it gets you to question your processes, I hope it garners a thirst to learn more and never stop learning. If you want to hear more from Jon, be sure to listen to his on-coaching podcast with Steve Magness. Thanks once again for being so generous with your time Jon!

In no way do I endorse doping, cheating, or physical or mental abuse. Definitely not to be tolerated. Let's just see if there is something we can learn from these athletes before they lost their way. It is hard for me as a recreational runner to fathom this dedication. In your basement. Alone. On a treadmill. A top runner, reduced to slow times in a dark corner where no one sees you. The part I remember best was: When asked about his goal, he simply said, “I'm going to win it.” Since he had never run an ultra, you didn't give him much of a chance, but he won the race.So what enabled him? To travel to a country he had never been to before enter a race the first time. Beat the local legends, run double the distance you usually run, overcome serious injuries, and win. What needs to be happening in your mind? How do you train in a basement on a treadmill for that. Read any training plan for the comrades. For any marathon, I sincerely doubt that unless you live on the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station you don't need to suffer on a treadmill. His training methods, putting aside charges against Nike Oregon Project Alberto Salazar's methods to speed: Apart from ‘pure speed' development and maintenance, Salazar has athletes work on their 800/1500 abilities throughout the year and away from races. “You won't get burned out [by doing speed work through the year; you will get burned out if you are running all out as fast as you can [frequently]”. Thus these session are controlled fast running, rather than all out efforts. Mo and Galen have been known to do short and fast track work throughout stages of training. Including 15x200m in 28sec, most probably often more at cruising pace. What does the Bible say about forgiving someone who cheated? Or did wrong to others. Scripture is clear that Christians should always be willing to forgive any offense of any magnitude. Ephesians tells us to, “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. (4:32). In the early eighties Dick Beardsley was one of world's most famous athletes. He is an American distance runner best known for his first-place tie in the 1981 London Marathon and his close finish with Alberto Salazar in the 1982 Boston Marathon— frequently referred to as The Duel in the Sun, compellingly told in the book by John Brant--where he ran 2:08:53 breaking the Boston course and American Records. After retiring from competition, he suffered a near fatal farming accident, requiring a five-month post-surgical recovery. From 1992-1995, he sustained three major car and cycling accidents, requiring over twenty surgeries. After each of his operations, pain medications were prescribed—to which he became severely addicted. It was a privilege to spend a moment with this inspirational speaker, fishing guide, iconic athlete, and champion of addiction recovery. I caught up with this native Minnesota outdoorsman away from his “floating office,” aboard his 19-foot fishing boat with his Dick Beardsley Fishing Guide Service.  He and his wife Jill are co-owners of the Lake Bemidji Bed and Breakfast.  Dick is a motivational speaker sharing his experiences of redemption, perseverance, and hope; he has spoken at fortune 500 companies, non-profit organizations, conferences, sporting events, prisons, and drug treatment centers.I hope you enjoy Dick's boundless enthusiasm, gratitude, and approach to Staying the Course, the title of his page turning book with co-author Maureen Anderson—a master class in overcoming life's adversities. We warmly welcome Dick to this episode of  Intrinsic Drive™.

The year is 1982. The place? The Boston Marathon, where a gutsy, relatively unknown underdog took on the renowned champion Alberto Salazar. They ran so closely together the final 9 miles that they'd monitor one another by watching the other's shadow on the steaming hot asphalt. The race represented not only one of the most exciting marathons in Boston history, but also a climax to each man's career. The depths to which each had to go in the final miles took such a toll that neither ever ran as well again.  From the "Duel in the Sun" with Alberto Salazar to living with addiction, his son's heartbreaking suicide, thoughts about Salazar's choices and making the most of running and life, Dick Beardsley will take you on an amazing journey through this revealing and encouraging interview.Looking for weekly tips, tricks and turbo boosts to enhance your life? For 9 miles -- from the Newton Hills to the finish line in Boston's Back Bay -- at the 1982 Boston Marathon, Dick Beardsley and Alberto Salazar raced in near perfect concert under the searing mid-day sun. As competitors melted away behind them and the crowd roared deafeningly beside them, Beardsley and Salazar remained so tightly knit that each could feel his opponent's gasping breath and could measure progress by the proximity of the two wiry shadows marauding the most famous streets in road racing. It was an edge-of-your-seat, back-and-forth drama rarely seen in marathoning. Ultimately, both men ran under 2 hours and 9 minutes -- a first in marathon history and a mark that only 1 American broke in 2021. The taxing heat, relentless surging, and unwillingness of either man to crack earned the 1982 Boston Marathon the well-deserved moniker: “The Duel in the Sun.” As that race's historic 40th anniversary nears, Dick Beardsley joined us earlier this week on his 66th birthday to recreate the 26.2 mile chase for the laurel wreath. He also shared his riveting personal journey of obstacles, tragedy, redemption, and hope.

But the show basically went like this. 0:00 Shelby Houlihan talk starts it off 44:30 NCAA review 66:00 Olympic Trials preview begins 1:44:30 Dathan Ritzenhein interview During the show, Rojo admitted if a Salazar athlete was popped he'd 100% have a different reaction but says that makes sense. Here are 12 reasons why it would be reasonable for one to react differently if this was an Alberto Salazar athlete and not a Schumacher athlete. Salazar was part of Atheltics west where there was known steroid use. Salazar admitted he used steroids himself. I had guys calling me unsolicited when Rupp was in college saying weird shit was going down with Rupp getting shots in hotel rooms. I had his massage therapist calling me saying they saw weird shit in the apartment. I've got a picture of a Nike lab report saying Rupp was on testosterone in HS. I know for a fact that Salazar has steroids in his bag and gives Rupp massages even though they have a masseuse on staff. Also Slaney was popped. I know Salazar violated the rules on Lcarinitine. I know Salazar repeatedly violated US prescription med rules. I know Salazar sent drugs across the world in hallowed out books. I know Salazar loved Dr. Brown. Jerry - who initially was a co-coach with Salazar -on the other hand, thought it was weird and stopped sending his guys there. And last but not least I have the assistant coach in the group calling me up saying he's got grave concerns.
