"For so long, every conversation, every day, was like, 'what is your weight?'  So really like reinforcing confidence and performance all around the number on the scale." Alexa Efraimson signed a professional running contract with Nike when she was just 17 years old. She hadn't gone through puberty yet, and while did shortly after that, her cycles were "super inconsistent" for the next six+ years. She navigated challenges with weight, body image, and fueling for performance. She got a college degree while running professionally, and had some success during her eight years as a pro. But in 2022, after enduring an emotional time with her partner and their families, she began to reevaluate her relationship to running and sport. She retired, and started pursuing an additional degree to eventually become a registered dietitian.  This episode covers the following topics and more:  Efraimson's current running and a big goal she has the Dietetic internship (she's graduating in May 2025) Navigating racing professionally, weight, body image, fueling, and harmful nutrition advice Going through puberty as a professional runner How she felt about the Mary Cain story when it came out and she was also competing as a pro runner for Nike What happened during the last year of her professional running career The nutrition book that totally shifted her perspective on eating and health Follow Alexa Efraimson as she becomes a registered dietitian this year (2025) and begins supporting fellow athletes: @alexa.efraimson. Mary describes the intense challenges that came with professional running which created a toxic environment for both her physical and mental health. Eventually she chose to leave the world of competition which was running away from the responsibility of keeping athletes healthy and happy. "If you're not having fun with it, I think you're going to look back in a few years once you retire and be like, ‘You know what, maybe I didn't handle it the right way. I was too serious with it.' You can have fun with it, enjoy it and still do well. Everybody was talking about how Molly wasn't taking it seriously – No. We were taking it super seriously in Sapporo and Tokyo in everything we were doing. Having fun is also super important and I think that improves their performance at the end of the day. People can look at it and be like, ‘Oh they're joking around and having fun.' But yeah, we joke around, we have fun but we perform, which is what matters at the end of the day.” Jon Green is a former All-American from Georgetown who ran professionally for a brief time after college but now he's most known for his coaching credentials. At 27 years old, he's coached someone to an Olympic team and an Olympic bronze medal in Tokyo. That someone is Molly Seidel, who used to be his teammate but then they teamed up together in October 2019 and it's been history ever since. Jon was the coach for Mary Cain's professional women's running team in New York City called Atalanta NYC but just recently passed the torch to Julia Lucas since he's decided to move to Flagstaff, Arizona to coach Molly and former Bowerman Track Club runner and 10K world championship bronze medalist Emily Infeld. His squad is going by Verde Track Club – a super creative name. In this episode, hear more about his plans for the team and his coaching offerings for everyone from post-collegiate runners to everyday joggers like me or possibly you. We also touched on how Jon keeps everything fun and that's at the heart of Verde Track Club's ethos. The demands society places on women—the choices they make about their lives, their relationships, and their appearance—can be overwhelming.  Lindsay Crouse exposes those expectations to the bright light of day and forces all of us to consider our own roles in them. Crouse is a film producer and senior editor at The New York Times.  A Rhode Island native, she graduated from Harvard University, where she competed in both track and field and cross-country sports events.  She helped produce the 2017 documentary 4.1 Miles, which won an award at the 2017 Peabody awards.  Crouse first wrote about the female athletes who wanted to become mothers and faced pressure to continue competing and training that would jeopardize their health and pregnancy outcomes in October 2014.  In May 2019, she reported on Nike's lack of maternity support for the female athletes it sponsors.  She produced a video interview and wrote an op-ed, about distance runner Mary Cain, entitled “I Was the Fastest Girl in America, Until I Joined Nike,” which was critical of both Nike and its chief coach, Alberto Salazar, for the grueling training methods and negative culture that profoundly affected Cain's mental and physical health.  Following the publication of the article, Salazar was permanently suspended from participating in track and field events by the U.S. Center for SafeSport, a nonprofit that protect athletes from sexual, physical and emotional abuse.   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this very special Happy Birthday Podcast episode I reflect back on this first year of hosting a podcast. Starting in November 2020, the Female Athlete Nutrition podcast was created to spread my message of fueling optimally to maximize our potential as female athletes. My hope was to reach a wider audience, beyond the clients I work with at Rise Up Nutrition, and share my knowledge around to empower females to be fierce, fit and fueled. In this episode, I touch on the fears that held me back from recording a podcast sooner, the feelings of imposter syndrome around sharing information other people have already said before. My motivation to push past these fears has always been to reach someone, somewhere, who hasn't already heard this message. I share my struggle with self-criticism, and hearing myself talk regularly on a podcast has brought its own challenges, such as inviting on great guests, preparing for episodes and asking the “right” questions, alongside my full-time work at Rise Up Nutrition. I touch on some of the amazing guests featured on the Female Athlete Nutrition podcast: Olympians like Terin Humphrey and Katie Nageotte, professional athletes and past clients of mine such as Mary Cain and Cali Schweikhart, esteemed experts Dr Emily Kraus and Nancy Clark, friends, family, colleagues at Rise Up Nutrition and more. The amazing feedback I've received from you FANS, supporters of the Female Athlete Nutrition podcast, has kept this going! Because of you, and the following we've gained worldwide, this podcast celebrates its first birthday, the first of many to come. Together, I believe we can all embody my “F's”: fierce, fit and fueled in all aspects of life. Join this movement as we embark on year 2! Mary Cain has been called “the fastest girl in a generation.” Mary has been been breaking records since she was a young teen. Mary was the 2014 World Junior Champion in the 3000 meter and she is the youngest American track and field athlete ever to represent the United States at a World Championships meet after competing in the World Championships in Athletics in Moscow at the age of 17. In 2013, Mary joined the greatest track team in the world, Nike's Oregon Project, and, as a result of an abusive coach and system, it nearly ruined her career. In 2019, Mary spoke up about the abuse she experienced and soon after launched a non-profit called Atalanta NYC. This organization employs and supports professional female runners so they can achieve their highest athletic goals and helps those same runners serve as core mentors for the youth mentoring program.  Follow Mary on Instagram and Twitter. In episode 100 I speak with Mary Cain, who is a professional runner and founder of the nonprofit and professional running team, Atalanta NYC. Atalanta NYC employs professional female runners to serve as mentors for young girls while building both their career skills and training full-time. Along with focusing on her training, Mary works at Tracksmith, as the NYC Community Manager, New York Road Runners. After sharing her story with the world in a 2019 NY Times Op-Ed, Mary has dedicated her career to driving change in the sport, with an emphasis on athlete well-being and gender equity, and Atalanta NYC is just one way she's trying to give back to the sport of running. I've been fortunate enough to speak with Patti Dillon (episode 50) the first American woman to run a sub 2:30 marathon and Julia Chase-Brand (episode 96), the first American woman to officially finish a major road running race. It was equally as insightful to speak and learn from Mary who is another pioneer within running. As this podcast is called a runner's life, we dive into what this looks like based on her lived experiences, we cover her running at present and she shares valuable insights and lessons, that I'm sure you will reflect on long after listening to this episode. Malcolm Gladwell is known as one of the biggest creative thinkers and voices of our time. We feel incredibly fortunate to have him join us for this episode, which we recorded live and in-person from his studio in New York. Malcolm is also a runner and most recently ran the open mile at the final event of the Trials of Miles series by Citius Mag with Chris Chavez.   Malcolm is the author of five New York Times Bestsellers, including Outliers, Tipping Point, and Talking to Strangers. Malcolm recently published his latest book, The Bomber Mafia. After recording the podcast with him, Tina, Knox, and Maria joined him on a run along the Hudson Valley.   In this episode we cover… Malcolm's story as a runner who stopped after age 16 and picked it back up again at age 50.  Mile race against Chris Chavez in an attempt to break a 5-minute mile.  “Being mediocre is much more enjoyable much more fun than being at the top being at the front. mediocrity brings freedom.” The story of how he found joy in running again after finding a track club where everyone would enthusiastically say they were a mediocre track club and that was its greatest charm. “It was the most incredibly open and it is the most incredibly open and accepting culture that I've ever encountered. Nobody cares what you do, how rich you are, if you're skinny or overweight, and they don't care whether you run nine-minute miles. I never, in my running universe had known a world of running where nobody cares, and we're all just having fun.” I wasted 34 years of running because I didn't understand that the beautiful notion that it doesn't matter. On being wrong: “I quite enjoy the feeling of being wrong because I really love, I love the revision. Discovering you're wrong is one of life's pleasures because it's it is that it's the way you open the door to real knowledge and backtracking is also a pleasure because you get to start over like what's better than that? Like it's like you know, all of the things it's this invitation to rethink something.” On truth: a conversation about Mary Cain and Alberto Salazar. On the distinction between discipline and toughness. “I think running builds discipline and discipline is more important than toughness. The idea that somebody has been a runner (discipline) is it is important because it tells me something about their willingness to tackle, in a persistent focused manner, a complex task that's super useful to me. I don't need to know whether they can run 100 miles (toughness). On the importance of a diverse team: “The reason we try to pursue a diverse workforce is we think it makes it's not because we think it looks better or we're fulfilling some kind of social function because we think it makes the work better.” When he was hiring for a podcast producer, a woman named Mia's first thing she said in the interview. “If you guys do your show on these ideas, no woman will ever listen to revisionist history.” And I was like, oh really, we need to hire you. So we did. Resources: Malcolm Instagram  Malcolm's Website Revisionist History Thank you to Athletic Greens, Goodr, and Insidetracker for sponsoring this episode. What's the famous quote about dessert? Oh right, it's 'save the best for last' and we did just that! As we close our first season, the Young American Dream, we have a very special guest, Mary Cain also known as the Nana and grandmother of your host, J. Camille. In this episode, Mary talks about her personal shifts in her 91 years of life including enduring several moments of racial injustice such as the death of Martin Luther King Jr., her journey of joining the military, and her life as a widow of a veteran and a mother. Mary Hinton-Cain was born in 1929 and grew up in Richton, Mississippi where she was the only girl out of four children from Louis and Gracie Hinton. In high school, she was sent away by her away mother to live with her uncle to receive a better education and better quality of life. As a result, in 1947, Mary graduated high school in Mobile, AL. Shortly after, she joined the U.S. army and during her time in the military she met her husband, Lynwood Cain Jr. The couple had 5 children, 4 girls and 1 boy. In 1969, Lynwood passed away while serving during the Vietnam War. Holding true to her husband's dying request of not 'turning back' to raise their children in the South, Mary settled at their last stop in Lawton, OK and finished raising her children there.  Today, at 91 years old, she is a proud mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother whom everyone gives the title, "Nana."  Hear her share her lifetime of shifts today! My guest today is professional distance runner Mary Cain. She's currently 24 and living in New York. For those of you not familiar with her story already, we'll take you back for a moment to 2013 when Mary was a 17 year old track & field phenom. She was breaking records left and right and signed with what was then considered the best track team in the world -- the Nike Oregon Project. To the surprise of many, Mary's performances actually began to decline after training with the Oregon project full-time. She eventually left the team, and last November Mary came forward with her story of training with Nike in what we now know to be an abusive, destructive training environment, characterized with the coach's obsession with lowering her bodyweight to improve performance. To quote the New York Times article on her story from last fall, “Cain found herself choosing between training with the best team in the world, or potentially developing osteoporosis or even infertility. She lost her period for three years and broke five bones. She went from being a once-in-a-generation Olympic hopeful to having suicidal thoughts.” I'm sure this is never an easy experience for her to discuss, so I really appreciated her openness and her positivity. It's so important for the sport to have positive voices like Mary's, and we shouldn't take those for granted.Recently, Mary signed on with the Boston-based running brand, Tracksmith, not only as a sponsored runner, but as an employee. I was excited to ask her about this new form of brand athlete relationship, and of course about what her life has been like since coming out with her story. Our normal podcast returned but this was far from a normal podcast as podcasting history was made as for the first time in world history a six-day-old baby appeared on a podcast. Once we adjusted to our new female co-host, we spent most of the show debating who had the better career - Dathan Ritzenhein, Alan Webb or Ryan Hall? Along the way, Rojo ranted about the need for colleges to open up this fall, Tedd Ginn Jr was exposed as a liar, we wondered if World Athletics deserves more props for its anti-doping effectiveness, and much more. In this episode, hosted by FasterSkier contributor Rachel Perkins, we dive into the issue of Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S). This condition was formerly known as the female athlete triad, which was described as inadequate energy intake, the loss of menstruation (amenorrhea), and decreased bone mineral density. The name was changed to include males, who are also affected, and to expand beyond the three symptoms originally included. Though not quite the same, the condition is closely linked with eating disorders. This topic has seen a lot of buzz following a November opinion piece in the New York Times where former high school running phenom Mary Cain shared her story of abuse by her coach, Alberto Salazar, at the Nike Oregon Project. While trying to get down to the weight he deemed optimal for her, she lost her period, her performance decreased, and she was littered with stress fractures.Further concerns arose a few weeks later when Ingvild Flugstad Oestberg and Frida Karlsson were pulled from their World Cup starts after not meeting team health standards for BMI and bone density, presumably due to under eating. We speak with licensed professional counselor and two-time Olympian Holly Brooks, registered sports dietician and author of “Finding Your Sweet Spot: How to Avoid RED-S (Relative Energy Deficit in Sport) by Optimizing Your Energy Balance” Rebecca McConville, and long-time coach turned voice of World Cup cross country skiing and biathlon, Chad Salmela. This panel unpacks the misunderstanding that RED-S is an exclusively female phenomenon and how the climate in sport influences the prevalence of this condition, and offers suggestions to shift from a results focused climate in sport to a positive, informed, healthy, and athlete centric program. Here are links to the resources and articles mentioned in this episode:Jessie Diggins Eating Disorder ActivismLauren Fleshman's New York Times Opinion Piece “I Changed My Body for My Sport. No Girl Should.” and letter to her younger self, which was posted to MileSplit. The WithAll Foundation and the "What To Say" campaign, which  offers suggestions for talking to food and body positive phrases to include in conversations with kids and athletes. HBO Documentary “The Norwegian Way” which details the Norwegian development program, in particular the omission of results in youth skiing before the age of 12.  The IOC Periodic Health Evaluation statement regarding more regular health screenings, including bone density measurement and blood laboratory work. The National Eating Disorder Association (NEDA) “Coaches & Trainers' Toolkit”The Opal Treatment Center and Podcast
