Have you ever felt like you need to be perfect? Have you ever not done something because you're worried you won't be perfect? It's the classic all or nothing approach and that's what this episode is all about. Getting past this feeling is KEY to eating disorder recovery. On this week's episode, Rebecca Clyde MS RDN joins host Julia Werth RD to discuss how living alone - and especially cooking for yourself - can be the start of so many problems. It's often easier to care and cook for others than it is for yourself. People often lose motivation when it's only them they have to worry about. On this episode Rebecca talks about how she works with clients to get them back on the caring for yourself train without making it all or nothing. It's OKAY to order out and it's OKAY to cook for one. With any questions, comments or concerns send them to Julia at werthyourwhilenutrition@gmail.com. In the realm of eating disorder recovery, the coordination of care from doctors to dietitians to therapists to coaches and family is INCREDIBLY important. If all parties are not on the same page it can leave an individual confused and potentially less likely to get on track for recovery. This week on the show, Carolyn Robin, track and cross country coach at Quinnipiac University joined host and dietitian Julia Werth for the second time - but this time, Dana White, a sports dietitian and athletic trainer at QU came too! Together they discuss the importance of coaches and medical professionals being on the same page. Dana has so much to say about the importance of recognizing that an athlete has a problem, but also recognizing when that problem is bigger than an outpatient team can support. If you enjoy the show please remember to rate and review it on itunes in order to help others find it. Despite sharing my story with thousands of people, the most difficult person to tell above all was my mom. For most people suffering from eating disorders telling those closest to us can be the most challenging thing of all. This week on the podcast author, runner, coach and advocate for eating disorder awareness in sport, Rachael Steil, joins me to discuss everything from this incredibly challenging moment to the difficulties of supporting others through the recovery process. Rachael's book, Running in Silence, is a wonderful resource for everyone trying to understand what life with ED is really like. The book takes you inside her thoughts, realizations and the toughest days of ED recovery. Part of the mission of this podcast was to figure out how to end, or how to recover from, eating disorders. I've spent much of the first 11 episodes just discussing what they are, where they come from, why they are on the rise and factors that influence the development of eating disorders and disordered eating in our society. This week, Elizabeth Rathbun LPC Psyc D joins me on the show to begin the discussion of strategies for recovery. We dive into mindfulness, strength based approaches and the parts of eating disorders that are incredibly difficult to give up. Elizabeth has been practicing in the field for 15 years. She completed her post doctoral studies at the Yale School of Medicine Stress Center and today runs a private practice in both New Haven and Westport. One of the most common misconceptions about eating disorders is that it's all about food, weight or body image. People often think that curing somebody of ED is as easy as telling them "to just start eating." In reality, helping someone recover from an eating disorder is SO MUCH MORE. This week on the podcast, Clinical Psychologist Dr. Laurie Grunebaum joins host Julia Werth RD to discuss the ins and outs - from the root of the disease to steps toward recovery - of eating disorders from the psychology perspective. Laurie has over 25 years of private practice experience with eating disorder patients and is an assistant clinical professor at Yale School of Medicine were she supervises psychology trainees. Anyone who has ever played a sport can probably recite at least five things their coaches said to them. I know I can! I'll never forget that my cross country coach in high school told me running is 97% mental, which is all well and good until you're injured... Anyway, the things our coaches tell us stick! For better or worse, what they tell us can make a big impact on our lives. This week on the podcast former NCAA athlete and current Cross Country and Track coach from Quinnipiac University Carolyn Robin joins me to discuss all this from the coaches angle. How does she talk to her athletes when they are the most at risk population for eating disorders. Please take the time to rate/review this podcast!
