In this week's episode we are talking about something we get asked about a lot in our group, whether or not to give homework to your clients. This can be individual to each coach and we would love to bring to you some thoughts around this topic and what impacts it might have.   We discuss: what actually is homework? the difference between coach set homework and client chosen homework how we can support out coachees to achieve their coaching outcomes when it might be appropriate to give homework the importance of contracting and boundaries how you can bring curiosity to sessions where homework has not been completed what are some of the pitfalls around assigning homework Assigning homework will always be a personal choice for each coach and may well only be relevant to some clients. In general though we ask you to consider what the reasons are for assigning homework and whose outcomes do they truly meet. First off, Happy Thanksgiving to ALL of you who listen to Locked On Nationals who have stuck through the host change, and continue to consume Nats content. So, on today's show Ryan discusses three things he is VERY thankful for as a Nats fan, and there are 3 things to be thankful for. How about the 1st one.... trading away Juan Soto. You'll want to hear the explanation on that. Then, he assigns key Nationals players a food item on Thanksgiving. Here are there categories for those items and what they portray: Turkey- The one we will ALL have our eyes on, and really the main character of this ballclub. This player will need to have a BIG season for the Nationals to be successful.  Mashed Potatoes- This is old, reliable, someone you know you can rely on in big situations, and someone that will always be there. What can go wrong with mashed potatoes?  Sweet Potato Casserole- Someone that will be a sweet addition to the team, someone we need to make flashy plays. Stuffing- Someone who is boom, or bust, someone that will need to be more consistent. When they're good, they're great.  Brussel Sprouts: This is someone you're gonna want to look past. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Quantified Intuitions: An epistemics training website including a new EA-themed calibration app, published by Sage on September 20, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Crossposted to LessWrong TL;DR Quantified Intuitions helps users practice assigning credences to outcomes with a quick feedback loop. Please leave feedback in the comments, join our Discord, or send thoughts to aaron@sage-future.org. Quantified Intuitions Quantified Intuitions currently consists of two apps: Calibration game: Assigning confidence intervals to EA-related trivia questions. Question sources vary but many are from Anki deck for "Some key numbers that (almost) every EA should know" Compared to Open Philanthropy's calibration app, it currently contains less diversity of questions (hopefully more interesting to EAF/LW readers) but the app is more modern and nicer to use in some ways Pastcasting: Forecasting on already resolved questions that you don't have prior knowledge about. Questions are pulled from Metaculus and Good Judgment Open More info on motivation and how it works are in the LessWrong announcement post Please leave feedback in the comments, join our Discord, or send it to aaron@sage-future.org. Motivation There are huge benefits to using numbers when discussing disagreements: see “3.3.1 Expressing degrees of confidence” in Reasoning Transparency by OpenPhil. But anecdotally, many EAs still feel uncomfortable quantifying their intuitions and continue to prefer using words like “likely” and “plausible” which could be interpreted in many ways. This issue is likely to get worse as the EA movement attempts to grow quickly, with many new members joining who are coming in with various backgrounds and perspectives on the value of subjective credences. We hope that Quantified Intuitions can help both new and longtime EAs be more comfortable turning their intuitions into numbers. More background on motivation can be found in Eli's forum comments here and here. Who built this? Sage is an organization founded earlier this year by Eli Lifland, Aaron Ho and Misha Yagudin (in a part-time advising capacity). We're funded by the FTX Future Fund. As stated in the grant summary, our initial plan was to “create a pilot version of a forecasting platform, and a paid forecasting team, to make predictions about questions relevant to high-impact research”. While we build a decent beta forecasting platform (that we plan to open source at some point), the pilot for forecasting on questions relevant to high-impact research didn't go that well due to (a) difficulties in creating resolvable questions relevant to cruxes in AI governance and (b) time constraints of talented forecasters. Nonetheless, we are still growing Samotsvety's capacity and taking occasional high-impact forecasting gigs. Eli was also struggling some personally around this time and updating toward AI alignment being super important but crowd forecasting not being that promising for attacking it. He stepped down and is now advising Sage part-time. Meanwhile, we pivoted to building the apps contained in Quantified Intuitions to improve and maintain epistemics in EA. Aaron wrote most of the software for both apps within the past few months, Alejandro Ortega helped with the calibration game questions and Alina Timoshkina helped with a wide variety of tasks. If you'd like to contact Sage you can message us on EAF/LW or email aaron@sage-future.org. If you're interested in helping build apps similar to the ones on Quantified Intuitions or improving the current apps, fill out this expression of interest. It's possible that we'll hire a software engineer, product manager, and/or generalist, but we don't have concrete plans. Thanks for listening. Ep 88: Jack Buckby | The dangers in assigning labels and calling people names that are untrue

One of the things that drives me crazy about modern society and culture is our tendency to call people names and assign them labels to avoid leaning into the uncomfortable conversations that exist when we disagree.   These names and labels — which are often untrue — carry with them enormous power to shut down productive conversation about important issues and they have the power to crush lives.   My guest this week, Jack Buckby, is all too familiar with this reality. A former member of a far-right extremist group, the British National Party, Jack has a perspective of the damage that can be done with names and labels are thrown about in bad faith and attributed to anyone with whom one disagrees.   Though he's no longer in a far-right group, Jack is still a conservative in many ways, and he's trying to get others to realize the harm labels and names can do to people who more often than not simply need an outlet to voice their concerns and be heard.   Get a copy of Jack's book at https://www.amazon.com/Monster-Their-Own-Making-Politicians/dp/1642934240/ref=sr_1_1 and follow Jack on Twitter at https://twitter.com/jackbuckby.

It sucks to go shopping and find something you love, only to realize it isn't made in your size. We have been there too many times, and talk a lot about how brands need to be more size inclusive. Our girl Nicolette Mason has been on the frontlines of this important conversation for a long time, and is truly a pioneer of change in the fashion industry in the best ways. She is one of the first plus size content creators we met in LA, and both Raeann and Kristina have been following her journey and benefiting from her content for forever. Nicolette is not only a content creator, Marie Claire writer, and designer, she's also a consultant for fashion brands who want to expand their sizing to be more inclusive. In this conversation we dive deep into the tangible steps brands can take to be more size inclusive, the challenges they face that consumers may not see, what's considered size inclusive, how “size inclusive” is being used as a marketing tool and how to separate your value and worth from the size of clothing you wear.   “No one looks at a plus size person and thinks, ‘I want to be fat,' because the world we live in literally makes being fat horrible. What's wrong with letting someone exist in their body in clothes that make them feel good? And why are people so upset about it?” - Raeann   We also talk about: How Kristina feels now that the news is out! How men and women perceive having sex on the first date “You have such a beautiful face” - is it really a compliment as a plus size person? Justice for Britney Abercrombie's ad with a visibly plus size content creator backlash What we say to people who think “fat celebration” is a thing How Nicolette gets clients for her brand consulting partnerships How she called out Marie Claire and got a job What's challenging for brands in becoming more size inclusive Old Navy's size expansion “failure” Opportunities for smaller brands to be more size inclusive  Brands that are expanding sizing well A shift in consumerism, sustainability and fast fashion Value and worth being attached to a size/number Scarcity mindset in plus size women developing personal style What is considered “size inclusive” in Nicolette's opinion What Nicolette would like to see from the fashion industry in the future Boundaries as a content creator Ask Away: Should I tell my friend I have a crush on a guy she's hooking up with knowing that she doesn't have serious feelings?   “Our bodies are so individual. Assigning any sense of morality or superiority or inferiority based on an arbitrary number, that's literally arbitrary, there's no consistency from one brand or style to the next. We can't assign our value or worth based on that.” - Nicolette   New podcast episodes of Confident Collective drop every Tuesday.   Resources: Follow Nicolette Mason on TikTok and Instagram Follow these writers/creators who talk more in depth about these topics: Aja Barber (fashion writer and theorist on consumption, ethical fashion, and developing your own personal style): @ajabarber Marielle Elizabeth (sustainability): @marielle.elizabeth Heidi (criticism on fast fashion, consumption, and influencer culture): @the_rogue_essentials Follow us on Instagram: @confidentcollective  Follow the Hosts/Founders: @kristinazias & @raeannlangas Learn more: https://www.theconfidentcollective.com/ Stay in the know with our newsletter!

Microtopics: * The type of band that has four songs per album. * Creating ambient soundscapes via a series of guitar pedals. * Johnny To. * Interpersonal violence and the right to be perceived as human. * A world where everyone knows Judo for some reason and they fight each other with Judo all the time. * The quality of life edge that birds have over humans (their urine to feces ratio) * A nozzle in your wrist like spider man so you can poop into the tiny hole in the wall that everyone's house has for wrist poop nozzles. * Improving the human condition with a wall hole and maybe a wall tank. * Burying a pile of trash but also putting a photograph and a floppy disk in there so if you ever get in trouble for your pile of trash you can claim it's a time capsule. * How geniuses empty dumpsters. * Everyone taking the first Monday of the month off of work to poop and at 6pm the city's plumbing system explodes. * How to monetize pooping teens. * American poor being condemned to a low quality poop zone whereas in Europe they have luxury poop villas. * Locking your dumpster so it's not filled with old carpet overnight by marauding carpet installers. * A Person on Twitter. * Playing a stoner album at the same time as a stoner movie. * An album/movie combo entirely bereft of revelatory synchronicities. * The most wrinkly hobbit. * Whether Gandalf was actually smoking something or if that's just something people joke about. * Brian Moriarty's multiple GDC talks about looking for secrets where there are none. * Writing a classic rock album intended to be played simultaneously with Boss Baby 2. * Rodolfo "Gato" Gonzales's legacy in Japan. * What the Guts Pose means to you. * Assigning elaborate meaning to each fist in a fist pump. * Henry Cavill reloading his fists. * Playing Rock Paper Scissors with Mario whenever he collects a moon. * A little head tilt to get you in the right mood to pick up rocks. * Whether Guts Berserk is named after Guts. * Elden Ring as Berserk fanfic. * Understanding and enjoying Elden Ring in a new way. * Attending the Montreal Screw-Job but not having any idea what's going on. * Taking a photo to prove you were at a historical event but the flash just reflects off the bald head of the guy in front of you. * A poem describing a fish. * A five-haired beard of wisdom. * A poem with fantastic mouth feel. * Catching a fish while dad is in the bathroom and screaming at him to hurry up because you don't know what to do with a fish. * Downloading a poem to your hard drive. * A good idea or at least a fun idea. * Whether you can believe the web design on this whitehouse.gov. * Killing software like only a 90s dad can. * Eating nachos every night. * Wanting to do things in fours because on Twitter you can attach four images to a post. * Top Four Favorite Sandwiches. * Refusing to share your top anythings. * That time Nintendo burned a hole in the palms of millions of children. * The ways Pokemon Go encourages you to put your phone down. * The kinds of places that society benefits from Pokemon Go not being played. * The Pokestop Review Process. * Two excellent reasons not to ship the Virtual Boy as a helmet. * VR chaperones. * Being okay with growing too tall but only if you have friends who are also growing way too tall. * Small inconvenient things about growing taller. * A cryptic giant living on a mountaintop. * Being 10 feet tall and retired and figuring out how to live in a normal sized house. * Doing CSG with caves and shirts. * Modular clothes that you can reconfigure to cover your changing body. * A wisp of a person with an eternal tube sweater. * Not wanting to become a spaghetti but respecting anybody who wants to become a spaghetti. * Growing to twice your adult height and getting cast as the monster in every horror movie.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Credence Calibration Icebreaker Game, published by Ruby on August 14, 2022 on LessWrong. The Aussie mega-meetup took place this past weekend. For it, a new kind of icebreaker was needed: one which is was not merely fun and sociable, but also instilled with the Way. Thus was the Credence Calibration Icebreaker forged. A marriage of the credence game and the classic icebreaker, ‘Say three things about yourself, one of them a lie', the game allows players to learn about each other, test their ability to deceive and detect deception, and discover just how calibrated they are. How to play Playing instructions here: docx pdf. Scoring spreadsheet. Each turn a player makes three statements about themselves. One and only one the statement must be intentionally untrue. All others players assign probabilities of being false to each statement. These probability sum to 1: P(A') + P(B') + P(C' ) = 1. The game is scored in the same manner as the credence game, but with reference to 33% rather than 50%. The way we played it, a player would reveal which was the lie immediately after everyone else had assigned probabilities. The immediate feedback is more fun and allows players to recalibrate as they learn about their performance. Revealing which statements were lies at the end would require reminding everyone what the other statements were. Many meetup groups have played the Aumann agree game where groups collectively assign credences to a collection of statements, however that game requires a collection of statements to be collected in advance. Once played, new statements must be collected for a new game. The credence calibration icebreaker has the advantage that players generate the statements allowing for easy replay. Improvements Restrictions should be placed on the nature of the lies in order to control which skills are tested. We played without restrictions and most players generated a lie by altering a minor detail of a true statement which didn't affect its plausibility, e.g. ‘My father's brain is frozen'1 vs. ‘My uncle's brain is frozen'. This resulted in the game being less about appraising the plausibility of statements and more about detecting deception by tells and other clues. Following the original icebreaker game, three statements were used. Reducing the number of statements to two would have the following benefits: The game is currently data entry intensive, requiring two numbers per question per player to be entered. Two statements would halve this number. Assigning probabilities of falsehood is counter-intuitive to many, using two statements would allow for the typical direct assignment of truth. People find generating three statements difficult, two statements would reduce the effort. Statistics Various statistics are computed in the scoring spreadsheet. Results from our game showed a high correlation between number correct and score, 0.72, and that players improved over the course of the game thanks to diminishing overconfidence. 1. True statement. As was 'I have three kidneys'. Thanks for listening. To help us out with The Nonlinear Library or to learn more, please visit nonlinear.org.

Assigning blame is unwise. But it is true that if you are going to choose an area to purchase or start a practice, some places are going to look much better than others. Hey, that is my job. Right?

In the past two years, it has become more difficult to hire people, particularly in office-type jobs and ones that will mesh into the company culture. Flexibility to allow a mixture of office and work from home type work may broaden out the criteria to make it easier to find the right people who would otherwise work well within the organization. What delivers results are finding people based on their personality first rather than their experience; those who are motivated and have the drive to achieve goals, learn, and adapt. The personality that aligns with your culture is ultimately a better long-term fit than someone with 20 years of experience and neither fit nor motivation.Good employees with drive, motivation and ambition can be more easily trained even if they lack the experience of other candidates. More times than not, they can learn the skills you need for the company faster, and grow enmeshed into your company. This results in a quicker turnaround time from hiring and training, to being a valuable and productive member of the team within 2 or 3 weeks.Brand awareness is key to attract these sorts of passionate and driven employees. You are not just competing against competitors for business but also for talent, and if you do not stand out in such a way that brings talent to your door, you are losing twice over. Video content especially stands out because it shows prospective employees what the company culture will be like, what to expect, and insert themselves into an average work day. This is great to get them in the door, but to keep them you also need to stay competitive with pay or benefits - after all, all work and no pay makes employees go away. In today's work environment also has the balance of remote work and in-person work schedules can be just the thing to encourage otherwise motivated and talented individuals to work for you despite their family and living situations. Now comes the important part of getting employees to work the right way and assigning them productive tasks. For your in house marketing team, figure out what tasks can be done internally, and which tasks can be outsourced to lessen their workload. Having a more focused workload for your team not only helps to convert prospects to sales more efficiently, it also saves money and lessens your workload for more pressing tasks. The same goes for those on the sales teams; they need to be hunters constantly looking for new sales to add revenue for the company. If they are at the office managing accounts and not able to laser focus on the work that is productive to their given role, it may be indicative that the support team connected to their tasks is not sending them enough new accounts to add in. Having certain steps in the sales process broken up and managed by specialized individuals on your team allows everyone to focus on their role and keep the machine well oiled and flowing. When you are having issues with generating leads or your team is split up on different tasks, that's an indicator to bring in outside help from industrial marketing agencies, like MFG Tribe. Ralph was born in Louisville, Kentucky, and moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee when he was 12. He went to UT Knoxville.  His first job in the mid-1970s was in Nashville. He moved away and returned to Nashville in the late 1990s to run the Science Center. The center was struggling at the time and this piqued his interest.  Ralph is more face-to-face. He's more about conversation instead of soundbites. He doesn't use social media. The Nashville Chamber job was the only other job he wanted and when it became open he applied. It attracted him because it's led by business leaders in the community who want to see a difference. They don't just hand over a check, they want to be engaged.  Community leaders often have the desire but don't have the wherewithal to take the steps to support the community. That's how the Chamber helps. After three years as President of the Chamber, they won the Chamber of the Year Award in 2009.  Determining your value. Setting goals. Scheduling with a timeline. Organizing...you either love it or you hate it. Why is so important when really what you want is a beautiful home? No matter how pretty your home is, if your home isn't working FOR you, it will be making you work for it which ultimately robs you of the time and energy to enjoy this beautiful space you just created!    7 other reasons why organizing is important: 1. Creates efficiency in your home 2. Makes spaces easier to use 3. Makes enlisting help from small hands (or hubby hands) easier because they know where to find things 4. Saves you money because you don't go out and buy the thing that you 'just know you have' but can't find anywhere 5. Allows you the space to see your things which means - continual editing (or decluttering) 6. Sets the stage for keeping things tidy in the future 7. It can be pretty   HOW do you organize? Following these three steps makes it easier than you think: 1. Edit your space  Listen to last week's episode: Spring design series (pt. 1): Editing// The progression to decorating doesn't ACTUALLY start with all the pretty things...we're taking it WAY back to the beginning   2. Start with a broad space you'd like to organize (i.e. Pantry)...plan sub-categories within that space (i.e. breakfast shelf, dinner shelf, snack shelf)...plan micro-niche categories within that (i.e. pasta basket, jars for grains, canned goods area). This episode is dedicated to the memory of the late George A. Jacoby, who was a pillar in the B-lactamase research community and a leader in the field of antimicrobial resistance. Assigning names to b-lactamase variants has been inconsistent and has led to confusion in the published literature. The common availability of whole genome sequencing has resulted in an exponential growth in the number of new b-lactamase genes. In November 2021 an international group of b-lactamase experts met virtually to develop a consensus for the way naturally-occurring b-lactamase genes should be named. Topics discussed: The inconsistencies in B-lactamase nomenclature Guidelines for publication of new alleles and newly discovered B-lactamases  Future needs of consensus among the b-lactamase community Guests: Patricia Bradford PhD., Antimicrobial Development Specialists LLC Karen Bush PhD, Professor of Practice, Biotechnology and Interim Director, Biotechnology Program, Indiana University. One of my favorite Piece of My Mind essays in JAMA is by Rebecca Sudore, titled, “Can We Agree to Disagree?”  And today our guests agree to disagree.   And yet, and yet… They also agree across a whole range of issues, some of which surprised us. This is the latest in our series of podcasts on concerns about, and potential of advance care planning.  If you're new to this discussion, don't start with this podcast!  Start by reading this article by Sean Morrison, Diane Meier, and Bob Arnold in JAMA, and this response from Rebecca Sudore, Susan Hickman, and Anne Walling. Then listen to these prior podcasts with Sean Morrison and Rebecca Sudore about this issue, and we recently discussed differences between Advance Care Planning and Serious Illness Communication with Juliet Jacobsen and Rachelle Bernacki.   On today's podcast we ask our guests about areas in which there might be agreement or disagreement, including: The Best New York style bagels are made in California. Assigning a surrogate decision maker is important for everyone, including those who don't have serious illness. Where does POLST fit in with this debate? All decisions are made in advance, the question that we are debating is how far in advance and what to call it Completion of advance directives and billing codes for advance care planning as quality metrics Among other topics.  I'm heartened that we could have this discussion as a field, as it shows that we've grown to the point where we can agree to disagree respectfully with each other.   We can work it out!
