Lilah chats through it with political columnist Stephen Bush and Leo Lewis, the FT's Asia Business editor, who has co-written a book on anime. Is it about his past, or the future of animation? Where does it sit in the Studio Ghibli canon? And is Miyazaki ever really done?-------We love hearing from you. Lilah is on Instagram @lilahrap. This is the history part of our Redline episode and today I'm joined by an actual expert guest- author and longtime Japanese culture journalist Roland Kelts. Roland is the author of the very good book Japanamerica: How Japanese Pop Culture Has Invaded the U.S., as well as the upcoming (out in July!) The Art of Blade Runner: Black Lotus.  He's also an editor for the journal Monkey, which collects English translations of new Japanese writing, which is publishing a new volume this fall.Japanamerica profiles a lot of the Anime industry in the mid-2000s, while Redline was in production, and does a great job of breaking down the successes and issues in the industry. We talk about some of those today, as well as how (if) they've changed since. We also get into streaming's effect on the industry and the massive success of the Demon Slayer movie. Also we learn that Pete Townsend is a very good friend with a very good assistant. I am happy to befriend any rock legend that is listening (Rick Nielsen, I know you've subscribed).Much like Rick Nielsen, you can follow us:On Instagram (@nofuturenyc)On Twitter (@nofuturenyc)On Letterboxd (@nofuturenyc)Email us at:nofuturemailbag@gmail.com

Ghost in the Shell was groundbreaking, visually and thematically. The 1995 Japanese animated film (or anime) was unapologetically for adults. The story focuses on a cyborg cop whose body is synthetic but her brain is organic. As she chases down a mysterious hacker, Major Motoko Kusanagi grapples with what it means to be alive. When Scarlett Johansson was cast as The Major in the live-action remake, there was an outcry over whitewashing. But the reaction in Japan has been different. Roland Kelts (author of "Japanamerica"), journalist Emily Yoshida and Tufts University professor Susan Napier discuss the racial politics of anime. Learn more about your ad choices. Colin Marshall sits down in Echo Park, Los Angeles with Roland Kelts, lecturer at the University of Tokyo, co-editor of the literary journal A Public Space, and author of the book Japanamerica: How Japanese Pop Culture Has Invaded the U.S. They discuss whether Japan has yet really figured out how to sell its pop culture abroad; the success of CrunchyRoll.com; his time growing up as a partial outsider in the white northeastern United States, and how anime and manga's focus on the outsider thus resonated with him; the commission he received from the Coppolas to write a story about Japan, which had him live in Osaka for a year; the subsequent offers that came his way to write about Murakami, Miyazaki, and Japanese youth culture; why the Wachowskis like anime so much;  what his youthful Anglophilia revealed to him about the parallels, especially aesthetic, between Britain and Japan; how we even have sushi in American convenience stores, yet nothing like Japanese street vending machines; whether he felt, as did novelist Todd Shimoda, a not-fully-foreign presence in Japan; how he splits his time between New York and Tokyo, and the importance of maintaining ties with his native land; how the geographical oscillation provides him perspective on both cities, and what escapes his attention (Lena Dunham, for example) when he's away from each; the relative lack of coded engagement and easier physical flow of New York; his understanding of American psychology coming through a cross-country drive of vast spaces and non-major cities; and the passing of Donald Richie, which raises questions of how best to write about Japan, a country which must now return to doing more with less.
